Let me preface by saying I didn't open the gift set. I'm giving this 3 stars because the book itself is somewhat a miniature version of the original, size-wise. Look at the dimensions carefully. I had assumed it would be the same as the regular book, with the added bonus of a CD, but this was not the case. If it's not a big deal to you, then the book should be fine. the store sent it fairly quickly.

The excuses and ramblings in the Translator’s Note do not adequately provide measure to the translator’s failure to present the charm and quaintness of speech found in the Katherine Woods translation. Unfortunately, this second translation also loses much of the profoundness of the ideas contained in the story. This second translator, Richard Howard, offers a rather arrogant and faintly incomprehensible critique of the Woods translation but has managed only to produce a story with the sense of a fourth grade textbook.

I was very pleased that the silver sticker shown was not on the actual book.
This edition comes in it's own case with the book on one side and the audio Cd
on the other. I dislike stickers on my books, and was very happy to realize the
book itself just has the Title and Author names, and was not printed with
" 70th Anniversary Edition" on it like the case it arrives in. It is just the sweet,
original looking cover. A lovely book.

This story has touched the hearts and imaginations of our family for generations. Now that our children have the CD's to read it to them in the car or other "wait" places they love this story more. They often chose it over TV. I recommend it to any family that loves to be read to. All the cousins have a copy of this book. It's in every one of our family's homes. Enjoy this very special anniversary edition, equipped with CD or an old fashion good read. A rating? It's one of those pieces of art that is truly priceless. I remember my mother reading it to me. I read it to my children. My great grandmother read it to me. It makes for wonderful memories. It exceeds 5 stars.

Although I don't see this as a children's book, I do recommend it to those of us who want to be softly drawn into the life of life and its poignant irritations. The audio book was mesmerizing, so be prepared to become acutely aware of its presence in your ability to pay attention to other things. Simply put, my heart was touched by this story of this charming Little Prince and his Friend. My spirit was saddened by his fate, although I believe the author's intent was to leave us with a feeling of hope. A lovely combination is the book and the cd.

This is a good gift for people you know that loves the story of The Little Prince, both children and adults. The audiobook is a lovely treat, with Viggo Mortensen reading the story. His voice is just perfect for this kind of tale. The packaging is also perfect for collectors or those who wants their classic to last a lifetime. It's like hardbound with built-in holder for the audiobook cd.

This book was always referenced among my friends growing up, but I never read the book. One night, we decided to look for a movie on Netflix and came across the Netflix Original based on this book, so we decided to watch this while the baby was sleeping... As soon as the movie ended, we knew we had to read the actual book, so I ordered it in the middle of the night and got it the next evening. This is everything we wanted and are excited to read this to our little girl.

Plus - the audio recording is narrated by Aragorn, the King of Gondor himself (Viggo Mortensen)

Nearly 20 years ago, a dear friend died, leaving a huge hole in the hearts of more people than he knew he'd affected. His mother was living her last weeks in hospice, so we didn't tell her that her darling Mickey was gone; his father died many years ago; his half brother and sisters couldn't have cared less. I wanted to share MY LOSS with so many mutual friends, and chose cards featuring The Little Prince, a gentle character that so mirrored our friend. Adding my own personal note, I sent The Little Prince to close to a dozen old friends to remind them "of the secret of what is really important in life." Recently, another older friend suffered the loss of her only son and, again, The Little Prince came through for me. To soothe her and give her peace, I was pleased to send this dear 70th Anniversary Gift Set which includes an affecting narrative CD by Academy Award Nominee, Viggo Mortensen. This little gift gives every time I take it up. I kept a copy for myself. You will too.

This is a very nice product. I had some difficulty with downloading it to my computer, but the publishers eventually sorted me out. The only other problem is that there are no breaks in the narration on the cd so one has to listen to the whole thing in one go. There are no chapters in other words. I would like to be able to listen in smaller chunks. The book is beautiful and the cd has the wonderful voice of Viggo Mortensen reading the book.

My first copy of The Little Prince was given to me in high school by a friend in my French class, a hardcover copy written in French. Since then I have acquired several versions of this classic. This 70th Anniversary set is lovely. Vigo Mortensen reads the text for the CD and does an excellent job, making this poignant story come alive for listeners. Highly recommended, though the original Katherine Woods translation of the text is superior.

This book by itself is beautiful, but in this edition they just made it extraordinary, beautifully crafted and the audio is just perfect to listen to it on your way work, or school or wherever and arrive with smile upon your face.

Favorite book. Apparently not the best translation... Writing this just to pose a question: Did anyone else get a copy of the printed book with the pages glued into the hardcover upside down?

Thanks!

I grew up having this book read to me. So when I had my little one I knew I wanted to continue the tradition and read him this book as did my parents. Such a sweet book that reminds me of my childhood.

The gift set arrived today. Its lovely. I opened it and wanted to download the audio version read by Viggo Mortensen. I input the provided access code three times. Each time, I received the error message "passcode is incorrect."

Can someone provide some guidance? The main reason that I purchased this gift set - as opposed to the much less expensive paperback version - was to get Mortensen's audio.

What is the problem?

I just saw the original drawings at the Morgan Library and am appalled by the poor quality of the prints in the 70th Anniversary edition; so untrue to the delicate shadings of the original. The translation too is far from the quality of previous translations.

I love "The Little Prince" and St Exupery's books in general. In French. I attended mostly French schools until I was 16 years old, and when I arrived in the United States for the last two years of high school, my report for 12th grade English class was on the English translations of St Exupery's works. I went on to take a senior seminar for French majors at Oberlin College. The only decent English translation of any of his works was Katherine Woods' translation of "The Little Prince", which retains much of the meaning and poetry of the original. Unfortunately, this translation continues the tradition of hacks mutilating his works. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and buy a copy of "The Little Prince", but buy the Katherine Woods translation, available here on the store for a few dollars more.

This Howard translation is an insult to Saint-Exupéry and his exquisite little prince. The watered down vocabulary feels like reading "Little Prince for Dummies" and the prose doesn't flow at all.
Buy the much superior Katherine Wood translation!

Honestly, I love this book and have many variations (French, collectors items, etc). I got this version largely for the Audio. Great to listen on a long car ride (I travel back and forth between DE and DC weekly.) Audiobook is only 2h long and I ripped it to my iTunes collection. The book is beautiful - Has all of the classic watercolors in fantastic detail. A great addition to my collection.

Unaware of the two editions, I purchased this edition and the pop up book. I listened to the audio cd and read the book, I remembered understanding the messages differently so I read the reviews to discover that I purchased the incorrect translation. Since the image on the book is similiar and since I no longer have the book, without reading the reviews I would have thought it was an imperfect memory, not a bad translation. The edition I prefer is the translation by Katherine Woods. Yesterday, I ordered her translation in the hardbound book and the audio cd.

I got this book from the library out of curiosity to see what the fuss was about. This is one of the most horrible, narcissistic, INSIPID books I've ever read. Oh and Fennec Foxes are indigenous to Africa nowhere else. . .
