I have enjoyed all of Brandon Sanderson's novels- some more than others, but something that he excels in is writing in a medium with interesting restraints. A magic system where all the characters have to eat metal? That sounds weird, but he thrived on it and made the fascinating trilogy called Mistborn. Step into a beloved, but sadly deceased, author's shoes, both adapting and creating on the foundation of a dozen prior books? He excelled at that as well, and his additional books in the Wheel of Time have been widely lauded.
This novella is another story with interesting restraints. It needs to be based on a bestselling iPhone game, expanding the world, explaining the magic system; it needs to have an interesting story with good characters and plot twists; it needs to be understandable to people who have never played the video game, yet set up the sequel video game in a compelling fashion; it cannot be too long, taking up Brandon's valuable time that is spent working on the Wheel of Time and his own landmark series, the Stormlight Archive.
Well, I think he succeeded. I had never played the game before, but I enjoyed the story, and it made me curious enough to buy the game to play on my iPhone. Is it ground breaking, a revelation, award winning? No, probably not. However, it is entertaining and fun, and I think that's all that Brandon wanted to accomplish.

Infinity Blade goes off of the Mobile App - Infinity Blade Series. That being said, this novella does a good job of bridging the gap between the games.
I personally learned about this after reading Infinity Blade, but the novella is written so it's easy to jump in and get a feel for what's going on. Overall, it's a short but fun read.

This book is just too short for the asking price. I finished the entire thing in maybe 1-2 hours. My guess is that if it was printed, it would be little thicker than the average magazine.
Nonetheless, its an entertaining read, but it feels like its just the introduction or a prologue to a longer story. And in fact thats exactly what it is - look up the story of Infinity Blade II to find out what happens after. Thus it ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger that can only be resolved by having an Apple device and purchasing the game. I dont own any Apple devices, so I had to read a wiki summary of what happens.

This novella shows why Brandon Sanderson is one of the best storytellers of his day and will be for many years to come.
The story is a "filler" between two video games but, most importantly, you don't need to have played the game to be able to enjoy the story.
Set in a fantasy setting with strong science links, it is the story of Siris, trained from childhood for only one purpose - to be the sacrifice who will travel to the dark citadel to fight the immortal God King. It begins with the unthinkable - Siris returns to his village after killing the God King and taking his sword. His people are not willing to accept their freedom so send him away and Siris sets off on a quest for the answers, starting with a return to the Dark Citadel.
The characters are well written and interact well together, the banter is good and the author draws a vivid picture with his words.
My only downer on this is that it is only going to be a one off - I really didn't want this to end and would love to go back and find out more about Siris and Isa (and the quite amazing TEL - what a creation he is)
Well done again Mr Sanderson

I bought this based wholly on the fact that the author had the distinction of collaborating on the last two volumes in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I was expecting a novel-length piece and was disappointed to discover it is somewhere between a short story and a novella. I figure I paid 99 cents for the story and two dollars for the author's name. The story contrivance is solid. So is a skeleton. Both need flesh. When I settled back to read last night, the unresolved sub-plots led me to expect that I was about half way through. I was a bit surprised to see that I was in fact just three or four pages short of the end. I understand that the story derives from either a game or a game campaign, and to his credit Sanderson did avoid the typical pitfalls of stories generated or inspired by gaming, e.g., third-person POV, clumsy combat mechanics, and poor continuity. But, other established fantasy authors also use games as a launch pad for stories and do so more satisfactorily. I previewed the first chapter in the next volume (Redemption) in hopes that Awakening might be a teaser introducing a more substantial series, but it would appear to pick up after the action that SHOULD have been resolved in Awakening. It is entirely possible later flashbacks fill in the gaps, but I doubt that I'll risk immersing myself in another pot-boiler.

The writting & story are well written, you are drawn in into the main character by the series of events that are presented to you as his life.
As the story develops you empathize with the plight of the sword fighter, not having done anything else since his childhood to his twenties but train to be a sword fighter, to be sent to duel the God King.
The book has the filling that it will be a lengthy novel, but just as the main character has accepted his fate as to what he has to do, the story teminates, ceases; as road that suddenly ends in a dangerous canyon.
This should be advertised as a novella, short story, what it is not, is a book.

Hmm, a difficult one this. I love Sanderson's books but this one just didn't live up to the usual standard. The majority of the tale read as a good intro to a book but in my opinion not a book in itself. And then nearing the end all the Sanderson magic appeared that has hooked me in to probably reading the sequel. I just wish it had happened a lot earlier in the book.
So read it, yes but I'd wait until the next instalment is available or risk feeling slight disappointed.

After playing the first game, I was drawn in a bit. Too short of a game with little to no story. Then the book came out. This book fills in the events between the first and second game. The second games SHOULD NOT be played without reading this. Its a must read to understand everything that is going on, and thanks to the book, Im drawn into the story awaiting more games and books!!
A definite must read if you are a fan of the series!

The book was a great surprise to me, as I never expected to get a book to follow up my fun romp through Infinity Blade. After reading the story, I realized that the guys at Chair and Epic were setting up to make a power move on the story aspect of this title. I can't wait for December and Infinity Blade 2!

this book is based on the amazingly illustrated game infinity blade (the first one). the game really has no explenation of the plot, setting, or characters. this book explains pretty much everything. it is very well written for someone who likes adventure, action, or a little fantasy.i, myself, dont like fantasy but this tale has the perfect amount to keep it interesting.as you "turn" each "page" you find something more exciting. there is a slight amount of humour added to keep you from an action packed but dull book. i highly highly recommend Infinity Blade: Awakening

So I read this book after playing the game with my sons. I got the book so that they could practice reading but I thought I'd also read it to share in the experience. Turns out, its pretty good and I definitely enjoyed the humor, description and the ending. Sequel?

This story provided so much background information that I actually became interested and cared about the characters. The story was masterfuly done and had me laughing over half the time. Many of questions and theories were confirmed after reading this. And man this was well worth the 2.99. I would reccomend this to any interested in the games or even some who is looking for a good short read

Brilliant character development has long been Brandon Sanderson's trademark talent. With Infinity Blade: Awakening Sanderson once again gives the reader a complicated hero to root for and a strong, appealing female character to provide tension, humor, opportunities for old fashioned chivalry and subtle hints of potential romance. Intricate magical systems and powerful sword/talismans feel like familiar friends to one who has enjoyed Sanderson's previous works. He simply makes it fun to read fantasy again!

For something that isn't Sanderson's brainchild he certainly takes ownership of the content. Likeable protagonist and foil, abrupt, semi hand-of-god ending. Excellent reveal at the end, well worth reading.

Sanderson is one of my favorite authors so I read most of what he writes. In this short story just when I was getting into it, it stopped. I know that this was what was intended but still frustrating.

Found the book very interesting, connecting very seamlessly with the game Infinity Blade 2.
The universe created for the game is quite interesting, too. I look forward to more entries into this franchise, be it in medium of game or book

This book feeds interest in the Infinity Blade games, which in turn feed into the book. They all mesh together fantastically! I just wish the book was longer, but then that might spoil the ending for IB2.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

As with all Brandon's books, I was satisfied, but still want more. I'm so glad he is a prolific author so I don't have to wait too long for his next book. The game will be much more enjoyable with the context this book gives. Can't wait for more from Brandon, especially more Stormlight!

I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. I hadn't played the game but did so after reading the story. To be honest the story was much better :). By the end I was desperate for more story - Sanderson is an amazing author that I can read any genre he writes and still hang on his every word.
