The information this book provides is clear, thorough, factual, and extremely helpful and beneficial if you were raise on old wives tales on how black women should care for their hair. I was, and this details all the do's and don'ts with information based on facts and science. It gives examples on how you can begin caring your hair properly, where to start, and how to care for relaxed, natural, texlaxed, greying hair, children's hair, color treated hair, etc. Great information I wish I had sooner, and very inexpensive for the value. The only down side, was that this version does not have colored pictures. This wouldn't be so bad, if the details attached to the pictures didn't reference the colors you are supposed to be seeing in the dialogue...so your trying to see what is supposed to be orange, yellow, brown, etc. and all you get is black and grey. All in all, still an excellent buy!

Goes into detail regarding the ingredients in hair products which is very helpful as well as hair symptoms to look out for to determine what type of damage your hair may have. There is also listed products to develop your hair regimen but this book was published in 2008 so there is probably a better variety now than there was at that time.

Okay, it came exactly as specified and was packaged great. I love this book. I've read two others by different authors, but this one covers it all. I refer to it constantly because I'm trying to grow my hair out and this book is my guide. I've learned so much more through reading it. :)

First of all , I already knew a lot haircares that are already been metioned in book , patting my back. I did a good job. I must be right abt what I did but I need get ph strips back in my haircare routine . I did have it for few weeks then it got old. That book reminded me I really need it. It is the exactly same pictured ph, I used to test my urine, foods, skincare and haircare....

Second of all, a lot of ppl are giving praise on how great book is and how information it is. Of course it is but it really is not new to me. I just said "wow" to some pages then put up for later time 'cuz I already got an another haircare book. So nobody is right . Neither of them is like GOD in knowing hair , they are just trying the best giving advices but it doesn't mean you have to agree with everything single they write . There will be a page that talking abt boar bristle and which comb provided for thickness, but I found youtube with DR.Hair that disagree with book . YOU just have to be sure and know your kind hair texture, if it is too tightly coil , might you don't need them . The only best is hand combing, then use plastic stable (brown) pick-afro afterward. It is same with other previous haircare book I had, it said to do hand it stimulate more blood nervous to encourage growth than boar and comb.

I still like book but I dont agree with ALL of HER details , just be careful. It is meant for some different hair texture and condition

She said some name of commerical shampoo/conditioner that is OK to use but one girl in my hair formus told me it is not OK because it has PPD that is like allergic reaction kill a lot ppl when not test it on hand before do commerical conditioner. Such as Aussie or Herbal Essence , they have dye hidden (thin paint) that what kill ppl but all are probably removed. Still sold in markets.

That is why I rather do organic/natural conditioner shampoo

Be care when ppl tell you what to do with your hair

YES I agree with her when she says GOODY a lot it is known to be OUCHLESS hair acessories but yea pricey it still is worthy . I know a girl using it for long time and she got long hair. That all she used because she dislike other thing that snag out.

That book is still worthy money and learn something abt hair fiber , conditioner, what you need, how to wear it , etc. I would RECOMMDE IT FIRST BEFORE ANY HAIRCARE BOOK AND BEFORE DOING AFRO OR TRANSITION. it has all imformations you need know :) I am actually gotta tell that kinda book to my family, half of my family is going natural. I want them to get that book but I will explain what happen and that some pages are wrong.

This book is a very thorough education about African American hair that both natural and relaxed can enjoy. This book made me informed on how miseducated I was and some of us are on our hair.

The old saying goes if you know better you do better, and this book gives information and the "science" of our hair's composition, grow, and how to maintain it. After reading the techniques and updating my rountine I felt the difference in my hair from day one.

Being a natural girl that workouts 6 times a week, I really aprreciated the workout tips and how healthy hair starts from the inside out.

For an African American wanting to learn more on you to care for our hair, this book is a foundational must!

Very informative for newly natural! I would highly recommend this book for anyone with natural hair. Once you understand and learn about kinky hair and ingredients to look for, you will save yourself a lot of money and prevent becoming a product junky!!

I had stumbled upon some info online from this book and I had to order it. This is not information that you can get online. I am natural but I might go back to being relaxed, who knows. This book has information for everyone. I like how it gives information, not opinions. If you want to know how to really take care of your hair, this book is a must.

I purchased this product thinking I would learn something new, however I was disappointed. I would recommend doing research on the internet, visiting blogs and websites dedicated to black hair care. This is where I learned every thing that is indicated in this book. I did not learn anything new.

I received my book on Tuesday and have been reading it ever since. So far I am totally amazed at the information that I have learned. I would recommend this book to anyone that does their hair at home and have others to put chemicals in your hair. Once you know better you will do better, and also once you know what NOT to do and the things that you SHOULD DO, you will wonder why didn't this book fall out of the sky YEARSSSSSSSS ago!!

This book really changed my hair care journey. After reading it i realized how misinformed I was. It has something in it for everyone. Natural, transitioning, relaxed, permed, dyed, etc. if you are just beginning your HHJ or in the middle or even at the end, I suggest picking this book up.

What a great book! Now I finally understand my hair, so I can come to term with it and give it what it needs. You see, I stopped perming my hair 5 years ago. For the 3 and half years I pressed my hair to submission. I stopped when I noticed it falling all over the floor every time I combed it. Out my frustration to get to stop breaking, I bought every hair product to fix my hair. To no avail. This book gives me exactly what I needed, knowledge about my hair and how care for it. My hair doesn't need fixing, I just need to take care of it and give it what it needs. Every natural should own this book!

Everyone women who have some type of african hair texture. I shake my head in disbelief of all the many decades that I was destroying my hair not realizing it. Now I have the tools to grow healthy hair. You need this book. It is the african hair bible. Not go trying to grow hair without it. You tube has nothing on this information, buy this book.

I have been natural for 5years. I have been really struggling to care for and get the best out of my hair. I was at my wits end when I came across this book on the store. it changed my life! I had paid for 3 or 4 other books on natural hair care before coming across this one. NONE OF THE OTHER BOOKS COMPARE. The book is so detailed in its explaination of WHAT to do to your hair and WHY you should. BTW there really is a lot of scientific information in this book so if you hated high school biology and chemistry you may struggle through the read, if so, just read through the how to chapters. In the end you will truly know how to take care of your hair, natural or relaxed.

This book is very detailed and very helpful for understanding the anatomy of black hair and how to properly care for it and allow it to grow long. It also provides a guide to determine if your hair needs moisture or protein. I am very impressed with this book and I use it as a reference for product selection and routines.

Thank you to YouTube's HealthyHairRiddles for recommending this book. There is so much information in it that is beneficial for not only women with natural hair but those with relaxers as well. I only wish I would have gotten the color version of the book to look at the illustrations. Get this book ladies and start growing healthy hair with me :)

This should be every black womans bible for hair. It tells you everything you'd ever want to know, and then some. Some of it is technical, but that's good. She starts off with the science of what hair is, and why it does what it does. This book has literally changed my hair journey. Her list of shampoos and conditioners alone is worth the price. But whats more, she tells you in great detail why the ingredients in these products are what you need for your hair and why. The book is comprehensive for naturals and relaxed women. I bought one for each of my daughters, because it was just that informative. This should be put in the hands of every 9 year old black girl!

grateful for a book that explains the science behind my daughter's beautiful curls. Everywhere we go people comment on her gorgeous natural curls and I owe a lot to what I learned in this book...says this white mommy with super straight hair!

This book has very good information on black hair care. It's information begins with what makes up our hair and all of its uniqueness. It then moves on to hair care for different hair types, relaxed, natural or color treated, and even children's hair. The bottom line is whatever your desired goal, it takes time and is an investment towards a desired result. I've just started following some of the suggested technique and so far I'm satisfied

After hearing rave reviews about The Science of Black Hair I knew I had to purchase this book! I was extremely impressed by the depth and breadth of knowledge presented by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy throughout each chapter which was far more extensive than I've experienced in any other book catered to highly textured hair. I also loved the author's approach to hair care, paying equal attention to relaxed, natural and transitioning hair types. No textured hair types will feel left out with the wealth of knowledge presented in this book. Although I have a fairly solid hair regimen and wealth of knowledge concerning hair care, I continue to find myself referencing The Science of Black Hair on many occasions. I highly recommend this book to anyone caring for or seeking to learn more about Black hair.

Reading this book goes deeper then just being a"good read." Reading this book has given me the knowledge to tackle an issue I have had my entire life. Dealing with my hair. Now I have an understanding of my hair. I look forward to co washing my hair and now developing a regimen for my hair. I have pride when I am styling my hair and coworkers who are in the Naturalist click inquire about what products I use on my tresses. It's a new day!

Great book for anyone looking to get the truth on how to care for their hair the right way. This book has a lot of great information for everyday hair care but also has a nice balance of science to give you a thorough understanding of how hair works. It is a regular resource whenever I'm thinking about changing my hair care regimen.

I bought this book at the recommendation of Kimmaytube (YouTube natural hair guru) and realized this is the information I have been searching for since I decided to take my hair into my own hands about 9 months ago. It is a very informative, detailed guidance to afro-textured hair. I have not found a book previous to this one that provides the necessary details regarding the science of OUR hair and the maintenance and care of it.

This book helps me to understand the mysteries of my hair. This is the first time I can honestly say that I have had the necessary information to learn how to care for my hair. Black hair has been neglected in the past in terms of products and information. I believe that this book is a great reference and am likely to use it for many years to come.

I chopped off my relaxed hair five months ago, and I did not know how to take care of my natural hair. So, I purchased this book to teach me how to care for and take care of my hair. It did its job, however, it was sort of scientific in nature.

This book completely saved my hair. It broke everything down and showed me everything I had been doing wrong. It is better to use a reference book because reading it cover to cover is a little extreme. But it went in explicit detail about which products to use and how to use them. I would have paid any amount of money for this book but luckily enough it was only around $20

Made some major "bloops" in the initial stage of my transition to natural hair. Wish I had this book when I started my natural hair journey a few months ago. My transition would have been much smoother. Prior to going natural - really do your research.

This book is very educational for persons wanting to learn more about hair care.
This book has helped me so far with some of the issues I have been dealing with my course hair. In addition I love the fact that this book and a section dedicated to little girls hair care. I have a two year old daughter who was born with a bald head lol . So for me this book plays a very important factor in our hair care journey.
I would recommend this book to any one interested in learning about real hair care.

This book is a 5 star production without a doubt. It is a detailed book about textured hair that I use as a reference book. Ms. Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, has put numerous hours of research in this effort to bring the facts about caring and growing textured hair.

This is a great book to understand textured hair- relaxed or natural! I had little to no understanding about how to care for my relaxed hair (been relaxing since I was 11, I'm 27 now). This book goes over what are good products to use, how to look for key ingredients when buying new products, understanding the textured hair structure and so much more that I can't even list. There is also a section on how to transition from relaxed to natural and also a section on caring for relaxed hair. This is the section I found most useful. I had no idea that there was a difference between conditioners (protein/Deep conditioning) and when to use it on relaxed hair. I also was one of the ones that believed that oil moisturized my hair. Because of this book and many black hair forums, I've grown to know this is not true. The section on moisturizing and sealing has changed my hair and I've only been doing it for the past couple of weeks. Prior to moisturizing and sealing, the ends of my hair were recently snapping off and I did not understand why. Then I read the moisturizing and sealing section. After reading the author's recommended products, I bought the Neutrogena Triple Moisture Leave-In Cream, shampoo and conditioner, Coconut oil and Hollywood B. Olive Oil. I still moisturize and have started massaging my scalp with tea tree/olive oil, but not as much as I used to. I do believe with the massaging/light oil combo in my scalp, I've noticed new growth! Plus a good head massage is also an added bonus. This book has helped me realized to achieve healthy black hair; it takes time, patience and necessary dedication. You can't expect your hair to be nice to you, if you're not moisturizing it properly and taking care of it. A rule that I've just learned!

The minor negative note I have is that I did notice two typos (but not a big deal because I understood what the author meant). Also in the product recommendation section, for example, I noticed that the Neutrogena Triple Moist. Mask is noted as a protein treatment and as a moisturizing conditioner. But on relaxed hair, can you use this product weekly? Reading the book, it says to only use a protein treatment a couple of days after the relaxer. So things like this, you have to be careful, read and pick your products accordingly. But beside these two "negative" notes, I loved the book and I'm still using it as a reference prior to doing my hair. Definitely a must to have!

Great book! I love that the book offers realistic solutions for improving and maintaining healthy hair. Extremely educational, I think its a great read for every black woman. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about hair care and I learned a lot. I appreciate too that the tone of the book is not overly preachy but rather provides options. I also appreciated the product list within the book, a great guide for helping make sense of the infinite product options on the market today.

I choose 5 stars because it was an excellent read. I recommend this book to women of color who wants to understand why our hair does what it does, whether we are relaxed or natural. It will help you take care of your afro textured hair better. The author was on point with everything she discussed in this book. It is a great reference guide as well, on how to take care of afro textured hair in a healthy way.

This book is everything i needed for my healthy hair journey. I learned so much and was able to make better buying decisions on hair products because it really breaks down what each chemical does to your hair. This book has helped me understand and appreciate my hair as it is in its natural state. This book is good for natural and relaxed hair because it caters to every kind of black hair. Its written by a black scientist whose in depth studies benefited her and now me.

This book is awesome!! I read this book within two days. I went natural over two years ago and there were numerous things that I learned from this book that I didn't know yet. I bought the special edition that was in color and it was like a very well written textbook. This is the first book of its kind and most african american women do not know how to care for there hair properly. This is a great reference every time you are lost or need help with something. I continue to refer to it on a daily basis. If you don't have this book yet you need to get it, the book is worth every penny!! :)

First - Had this been my first book on taking care of my natural hair, it would have been MY ONLY BOOK! This book is awesome! The author gives you information from a scientific point of view then she breaks it all the way down for people like me. I had no earthly idea how to take care of natural hair but she thoroughly explains what your hair basically needs and she also gives you an approximate timelines for everything you need to do (clarify, pre-poo, deep condition, protein treatment, etc). She not only tells you what ingredients you need to look for (and avoid) when choosing products but she lists many, many products with those desired ingredients. She tells you how to care for children's hair as well as relaxed hair. She tells you what relaxing and coloring does to the hair strand and tells you how to care for your hair should you choose to relax and/or color anyway. She gives alternatives to the not-so-healthy things we do to our hair and provides interviews from people also on the healthy hair journey - some relaxed and some natural. She gives you a breakdown of vitamins, oils, talks about transitioning and pH, compares lye v/s no-lye and hooded v/s hand-held dryer and so, so much more. This book is an all-inclusive, thoroughly researched resource beneficial to everyone who strives for healthy hair!

This book was very good. It discussed the science behind doing proper hair care. It helped in determining the type of hair I have and what I could do to improve its health. It also showed how to determine appropriate products for your hair type. I highly recommend this book if you truly want to get to the nitty gritty of the matter.

I started transitioning from relaxed to natural hair and Kimmaytube on youtube recommended it after reading it. And I must say that this book changed my view on African hair! Best part is this book gives you recommendations on shampoos, conditioners, sulfate-free shampoos, leave-ins, how to do hot oil treatments, moisturize, etc. The list goes on!
