This book was Not my favorite. Personally, I don't enjoy reading about gay love. But i'll read anything Diana Gabaldon writes, she is a truly gifted storyteller. Gabaldon's descriptions are unexpected and often hilarious. Her writing style is superb.

When Lord John's mother, Lady Benedicta, decides to wed, Percy Wainwright, the stepson of his stepfather, enters his life, bringing him much joy, angst and grief. In the meanwhile, John and Hal unravel the mystery surrounding the untimely death of their father, the first Duke of Pardloe.

Diana Gabaldon is a very entertaining writer. The Lord John books are great. I think I'm starting to become a Scottish history buff. As much as I have enjoyed these books, I've enjoyed the "Highlander" series of books even more. Whether you buy the books at the store or download them onto your e-reader, they are worth reading. My only problem with them is I can't seem to put them down once I start reading them.
Lord John and the Hand of Devils (Lord John Grey) :: Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade - The Scottish Prisoner (Lord John Grey) :: An Outlander Novella (Lord John Grey) - The Custom of the Army (Novella) :: and Written in My Own Heart's Blood (Outlander) - The Companion to The Fiery Cross :: How I Write Sex Scenes (Kindle Single) - I Give You My Body . . .

I really liked this book. It gives some important background info on Percy (who appears briefly a bit in later Outlander books) and also gives us the big fight scene between Jamie and Lord John that sets up an important divide between them at the beginning of the Scottish Prisoner. Finally, this books gives us some important background about the death of Lord John's father, Lord John's family, etc.

Love the character of Lord John, this book offered more of his conflict between his true self and the society of the time. Also his loneliness and search for a relationship. Liked it better than the "Private Matter".

I enjoyed getting to know more about Lord John Gray. Too often (while reading the Outlander series), I wrongly lumped LJG in the same category with Black Jack Randall. I'm REALLY looking forward too seeing him come to life on the small screen on Starz.

I was curious and intrigued about Lord John Grey when reading The Outlander series. This book has enriched my understanding of him the "lives" of other characters in the series. Diana G. Is amazing in the detail and feeling with which she writes of the people and times. This ever so much better than reading a history book. Her use of primary sources and other historical information makes history come alive. Everyone and everything has a history. I am totally fascinated with her writings.

I adore Diana Gabaldon's works. She is interesting and historically factual. I feel that even though these are works of fiction I have learned a great deal of historical fact. While her books, including the Outlander series, of which Lord John is a spin-off character, are lengthy, I find that I am wanting more and can't wait for her next book to come out. Enjoy!

Another character from "Outlander" that is very interesting and makes the books expand the knowledge of the "Outlander" world.
I enjoy the books so much and the way Diana Gabaldon writes brings it all together.

There's action, drama, history, mystery and Lord John finally gets a little romance in his life. All of this would have been enough on its own, but you also get the added bonus of seeing pivotal scenes from the Outlander series from Lord John's point of view. I started the book just hoping for a gabaldon fix until the next Jamie&Claire book comes out, but got so much more. This is a really good book in its own right, and I can't wait to read more in this series!

I am really enjoying getting to know Lord John better. Diana Gabaldon creates an intriguing tapestry — love, lust, family, honor — while keeping the reader intrigued and eager for more. I could hardly put the book down.

Lord John Grey's character is more developed in this story ... we get to see many sides to him and meet his family. Good story, moves along well. I would definitely suggest reading all the LJG books/novellas in their chronological order, although they can be read in any order. Overall, the series feels like chapters in what could have been one huge book. But it's all good.

I have some problems keeping names and locations straight. I am amazed at the description's of and modes of travel, length of time, and hardships.
Learning more history than ever did in school, but maybe just more interested now.

I ordered this ( and the other Lord John Grey books) because I was impatiently waiting for "Echo in the Bone"..I was amazed how wonderful these books are. Galbaldon's style and talent just makes all her character rich and deep...and you care about them. Lord John is a minor character in the Outlander books..but these books..written as mysteries..he is dashing and intelligent. I love the detail of period Galbaldon utilizes....She is just amazing..and so are these books.
