Diana Gabaldon rarely disappoints. She is an excellent story teller. I only gave it four stars because I wasn't really interested in that much detail about his "love life". Still, it was a good read and brought this interesting character to life. It built my anticipation for the next Outlander novel coming out in December. Can't wait for it.

After reading all of the Outlander series, this was a great way to fill in some of the pieces of what happened while Jamie Fraser was at Helwater. It was also great to get inside Lord John's head and solve some mysteries. I highly recommend these books to anyone who likes Outlander or just some good old fashioned adventure stories with a British twist.

The Scottish Prisoner was my favorite of the stories. Some of the stories were not as interesting but still shed a bit of light on some of the Outlander characters. Overall a good read while you are waiting for the next Outlander book to come out.
An Outlander Novella (Lord John Grey) - The Custom of the Army (Novella) :: and Written in My Own Heart's Blood (Outlander) - The Companion to The Fiery Cross :: The Rules of Dreaming :: Dodsworth (Library of America #133) - Elmer Gantry :: Lord John and the Hand of Devils (Lord John Grey)

Nice grouping...enjoyed having the Chaves fleshed out as well as a feel for the general society...however found ,The Scottish Prisoner flowed better...than the other books in series...perhaps because the Jamie character is already so well understood.

I read this bundle while waiting for the last book of the Outlander series to come out. I had missed the Outlander series characters so much I found it like visiting old friends and getting to know them again, but in a new light. This read kept me sane while waiting for a resolution to what had been left unfinished before Gabaldon's last installment in the series came out just this summer. Thank you, Diana, for so many wonderful hours of reading and living with Claire and Jamie. Thank you for the insight into Lord John's world and the added clarity it gave to his relationship to Jamie and William. We'll done!

Not quite her best work, but intriguing nevertheless. She still keeps one turning pages, not wanting to put the book down. I enjoyed the last of the four books best, as lord John had adventures tehat kkept himk on his toes.
