I read this book when I was in the third grade, and I have loved it ever since. I never purchased the book until now and forgot quite how short it was, so I had no problem paying the $8.50 - but this book took me literally 15 minutes to read (I think the original was only like 30 or 50 pages, and includes pictures). The content I would rate 5 stars, because it is an adorable, whimsical tale of a family of foxes outsmarting three nefarious farmers (wow, a little alliteration there?). However, if my 1 star helps someone else notice that the price is ridiculous, one star it is.
Also be advised that the other 1-star reviews are ridiculous. Read to your children. Allow them to read. Encourage them to read. Don't censor 'scary' or 'offensive' content (within reason, of course - don't show a 2 year old 'Friday the Thirteenth'). If you allow them to be scared and help them rationalize their fears instead of shielding them all the time, they will be much more well-adjusted.

Aesop's fables this is not. Mr. Fox isn't a meddlesome thief. Well. He is. But, like, the farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean are <i>mean</i>, you know?
But, seriously, you are rooting for the foxes and all the other animals all through this story. The farmers are established as so loathsome and so stupid that every strike against them is a triumph. Even as a full-grown woman, I was smiling each time Boggis, Bunce, and Bean were given their comeuppance.
And, a bit unexpectedly, this is one of the few occasions where a classic book is matched in quality by its movie. If your child liked the book, then I definitely recommend allowing them to watch the stop-motion version. Some liberties are taken, but it stays true to the feel of Dahl's book.

I was introduced to this book through the film. I really loved the film (though, I'm the only one I know who does) I love the characters and the atmosphere; however, the film can be depressing.
I came into this not entirely sure what to expect, I've recently tracked down the books some of my favorite movies are based on and I've found that more often than not I actually preferred the films (much to my dismay since reading is my passion). The characters are less pronounced in the book than the film but the mood is much lighter despite telling the same story. Although I am a tad disappointed to see that my favorite character from the movie, Kristofferson, wasn't a character in the original story.
I've read that some people dislike the abrupt ending to this, but I think that the story is the exact length it needed to be. The price of the book, however, is absurd. This is a very short story and a fast reader will devour it before they have time to get comfortable in their favorite reading chair.

The three meanest farmers in the county are determined to kill Mr. Fox. In their unrelenting war against our suave and roguish hero, they inflict terrible damage to the countryside and threaten the lives of many other animals that share the hills with Mr. Fox. As the farmers create wanton destruction, the animals look after each other and find a just if morally questionable solution to the threat to their children's and their lives.
Many folks are going to have a problem with this one. "It's too scary", "It glorifies theft", "It's a tree-hugger political tract", et cetera. What a load of tosh. This is a kids' book, written by a man who understood what worries kids and what inspires kids. Kids are worried by mean people who are bigger than them, like the three farmers. Kids are worried by being pursued, the way the three farmers were after Mr. Fox. Kids are inspired by a little guy who can outsmart the big, mean people, like Mr. Fox. Kids are inspired people who look out for other people the way Mr. Fox did. Kids are inspired by food, and food was a central theme to this book.
It's got action, drama, heroism, and humor. "Fantastic Mr. Fox" is writing at its best.

This Roald Dahl story is one of his best books and is fit enough to stand alongside Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as my other favourite title from his early years. Dahl finds himself mastering his craft of storytelling, and the writing really shows. Once you start reading this pacey story, you will be in for a spellbinding and mesmerising surprise because with every turn of a page, an unexpected event lies in store.
Our loyalties are well-defined early in the story, and even despite real-life contradictions, we end up rooting for Mr Fox and cheering for him as a symbol of good, while at the same time allowing Boggis, Bunce and Bean to symbolise evil. At the part of the story where Mr Fox's tail is shot off, we feel extremely sorry for our hero. The story takes an unexpected twist with the three farmers showing their greed with their tractors and their fierce measures to get Mr Fox out of his hole, and is one of those instances where Dahl shows us that greed and selfishness are undesirable in society. But they don't realise the cleverness and handsome nature of Mr Fox in actually winning the battle by finding a most unusual way into their own larders, where they don't want him to be, and we end up cheering for him in the end during the feast.
Overall, I find that this book is sure to be counted among Roald Dahl's best, and he is certainly right in calling it his best-balanced book. This can be recommended to even older readers and not just to the young, at whom the book is aimed.

I love roald dahl and quentin blake. This is a decent story and a fun read. That said, it is definitely not my favorite roald dahl book. Also, I hate to say this, but if you've seen the movie before reading the book, you may be disappointed because the book is not as detailed as the move (exactly opposite of what normally happens with books that are made into movies).
As a disclaimer, I am a 20 something who loves the movie by wes anderson and who really enjoyed roald dahl as a child though somehow never read this story so that's why I bought it now, after having seen the movie. So unless you fall into the category of buying the book because you loved the movie, you can probably disregard my review.

Mr. Fox is to clever for 3 farmers called Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. These are nasty farmers because they like to kill and they're evil.Mr Fox and his family live in a hole, under a huge tree on top of a hill.
Every night Mr. Fox goes to 1 of the 3 farms to steal something to eat.But doing this caused alot of problems. The 3 farmers wanted to strangle the poor fox to death! What do you think will happen?
I felt bad and good. I feel bad because its a shame that Mr. Fox has to steal food in order to keep himself and his family alive.I felt good because atleast his risking his live, and that shows that he really cares for his family.
I think that the 3 farmers don't have to kill the fox to keep their food safe.I also think that there are other ways for the fox get food.Like hunting for food.I loved this book so much that i couldn't put it down.I couldn't put it down because it was written by my favorite aouther ROALD DAHL.
This book was also funny because it said that Bean never took baths so he had all sorts of junk in his ear, like fly's, gum, and dirt.
I recommend this book to who ever likes funny stories, and to who ever likes ROALD DAHL books.

This book is very entertaining! It can be hard to hold other people's attention when reading outloud, but that was NOT the case here. This story is full of laughs and keeps you on the edge of your seat with every page! I read this story to my family every night (ages: 6, 8, & 37) and everyone held on to every word! They begged for more when I stopped for the night. It is now a favorite in our home.

Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl
"Boggis and Bunce and Bean / one fat one short one lean/these horrible crooks / so different in looks / were nonetheless equally mean."
Roald Dahl's story, Fantastic Mr Fox is aimed at 7 to 10 year olds. I reviewed this book because it deserves getting a mention and I think every one should read it.
The story is a basic farmer vs vermin story (similar to the story of peter rabbit) Mr Fox the hero lives in his burrow with his family of four little foxes and his wife called Mrs Fox. Every night before dinner, Mr fox asks Mrs fox what she would want for dinner a nice plump goose or a chicken (of course they both come with cider). The foxes lived up on a hill under a tree and every night Mr Fox would go out and sneak into three mean farms as quoted earlier and steal a chicken or goose and some cider. The farmers had known about Mr Fox for some time and planned to shoot him as soon as he comes out of his hole (the Fox avoids this). I wont give too much of the story away but it involves big machines, digging, complaining badgers rabbits etc and stealing. The pictures on every 3rd page are done by Quentin Blake.

Today I picked up Fantastic Mr. Fox from the Salvation Army for only .99. I have seen the movie and found it entertaining, so I bought the book. Mr. Fox must feed his children, therefore, he gathers his food from three of the meanest farmers. Boggis the chicken farmer and Bunce the duck-and-goose farmer are both gluttons. Last but not least, Bean was a turkey-and-apple farmer. Rather than gluttony, his besetting sin was drunkenness. Unfortunately for Mr. Fox the farmers decided that they were tired of sharing with the fox family. They devised a plan to terminate the fox family, but they were not counting on the cleverness of Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Mr. Fox responds to shovels, caterpillars, and many armed men by staying underground. While the farmers are patiently waiting to starve Mr. Fox out he is wreaking havoc underground. Mr. Fox dug right up to each farm and took whatever he wanted. The animals of the hill would never need to go above ground again.
Analysis and moral application:
On one occasion the badger takes the Lord’s name in vain. (p. 61) This may not be problem for others, but it is my own personal conviction that such a cliche’ is a misuse of God’s name, and therefore “in vain.” Near the end of the story Badger feels guilty about stealing the food. Mr. Fox reassures badger that the farmers are being mean and that they won’t stoop to their level of attempted murder. This argument appeases badger.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is a fun story, but I believe there are a few lessons that we can share with our children. The animals take on human tendencies and characteristics; they talk, rationalize, and feel sorrow and guilt. The humans are pictured as the mean monsters and they lose their composure as they fail to achieve their goal to kill Mr. Fox. When they are ridiculed by others they become increasingly angry and more determined. At the end of the story they are the fools left out in the rain. Of course, they are depicted as fools in the beginning of the story, two gluttons and a drunk who are ridiculed by children.
In reality animals do not have a conscience nor can they rationalize. However, humans have the ability to rationalize. But at times we forfeit that responsibility and act like animals. In our frustration and anger we make rash decisions that ultimately make us look foolish, and sometimes we behave like immoral animals, as depicted by the farmers.

Reading a Roald Dahl book for a bookloving child, -it has to be a success :-)My six year old love this book, as she does with most of Roald Dahl's books.
This is one of the early books from Roald Dahl's pen, but he has already started to develop his special style, the style making the small readers or listeners open their eyes and ears a little extra, wow, can this really be true? And of course all we read is true, in the world of Roald Dahl. Every kid instinctively understand this and can inhabit the Dahl-world in seconds.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is about Mr. Fox and his fight for his family's life, to escape from the three farmers, Boggis and Bunce and Bean, one fat one short one lean. Our loyalty is set right in the beginning of the book, and then we can fight with Mr. Fox and his children through the pages. Mr. Fox is always at least one step ahead of the three farmers, and his plans are so fantastic none of us have fantasy enough to come up with them ourselves, but when we read about the fox we say to ourselves, of course, it has to be like this, just like it was our own idea from the beginning.
No one can write fantastic stories like Roald Dahl. I am happy and thankful for all the books he manage to give us.

He's a chicken-stealing thief and a cellar-raiding rogue. He's also a loving husband and a caring father. He's even kind to rabbits. Oh, and he's a fox. What more could you want in a leading man?
Roald Dahl's "Fantastic Mr. Fox" tells the story of how Mr. Fox and his family fend off an assault by farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Losing his tail to the farmers' bullets, Mr. Fox tries to wait out the farmers' vigil but Boggis, Bunce and Bean have other plans. They try to dig up the Fox family's den with steam shovels, forcing Fox and family ever farther underground. Derided by the townspeople for flattening a whole mountain just to catch a fox, the farmers decide to see who can last longer, them or Mr. Fox.
Mr. Fox, on the other hand, comes up with a brilliant way out, better left to be related by Dahl himself. Like any well-written children's story, "Fantastic Mr. Fox" is several notches above the average simplistic picture book but not so long that it can't be read in its entirety as a bedtime story. Since it's not dumbed down for young readers, it remains a favorite of adult readers as well.

I bought this book for two reasons:
1. I'd just seen a preview for the movie and thought it looked pretty funny and I liked the animation style
2. I've enjoyed the Roald Dahl books I've read previously
With regards to the movie influence, I haven't yet seen the movie. Based on the reviews I've read, it sounds like a fun little film but definitely a bit different than the book. Eventually I'd like to watch it.
As to the book itself, it was a very quick read overall although we did read it over the course of a week or so reading a chapter or two each night with the kids.
As with the other Dahl books I've read, this one is full of great writing and fun artwork. The kids made sure to remind me to show them the pictures on every page while I was reading and they really got after me if I forgot.
The characters were lovable and humorous. I loved the matter-of-fact nature of Mr. Fox as he works through the numerous problems that come his way. I really enjoyed the caricature-like portrayal of each of the three farmers that Mr. Fox must outfox. The other members of the fox family are great and I enjoyed the other animals we get to know as well.
The story itself is fairly simplistic and rolled out like an old animal fable from Aesop or others. As such, I think I expected it to take more of a moral high ground. At the same time, knowing it was Dahl, I should have expected the tongue-in-cheek nature that I found.
As the foxes were cornered in their burrow and desperately worked to escape, I enjoyed the dialogue between the family. It was well portrayed and felt fairly realistic. Once they finally had a semblance of safety, it was fun to watch Mr. Fox take charge and go forward with a new plan.
The main detractors for me took place in the last ~third of the book.
First, there is a point where Badger and Fox are talking about the morality of their actions...of stealing food from the farmers. The discussion was framed rather strangely especially considering the general nature of wildlife surrounding farms. While the discussion ended up concluding 'well-enough', I really would have preferred either a bit more elaboration from Fox, a bit more debate from Badger, or a general removal of this morality sequence.
Second, when Mr. Fox, his young Fox, and Mr. Badger end up in the cider house, it's pointed out that the cider is indeed alcoholic. Furthermore, all of the animals there (including the child) take a pull off the cider and revel in the wonderfulness of it. Later the cider is taken back home for a feast and there is more joy in its consumption. The alcoholic nature isn't played up exceedingly and I honestly don't think my kids picked up on it (or if they did, they didn't make a point of it...Jason just told Julia that "cider" was "apple juice" and they left it at that). Still, I see some concern portraying the wonderful nature of liquor in such a young, fable-like book.
Third, although we are to believe and understand the carnal nature of these carnivorous animals living among farmers...there is also the strange juxtaposition of a family of rabbits attending the feast. If the food supply was in danger, I can't imagine the rabbits surviving for the number of days that they did. This just felt like a strange inconsistency.
In the end, this was a very cute book with a fun cute little story and was an entertaining read. While it read like a Fable, I'm not exactly sure which direction we should look to find a clear moral. Obviously we are intended to relate with Mr. Fox and the other animals. The farmers are presented as particularly odious, vengeful and despicable. At the same time, we have the morality conversation between Badger and Fox that isn't clearly resolved and leaves question as to the morality of Fox's actions...which then presents some justification for the actions of the farmers.
On the plus side, this book is definitely geared towards young readers and as such I'm certainly overthinking the need for a moral. The kids enjoyed the story and saw Fox's victory over the farmers as inspiring and funny.
Which is just as it should be.

This is one of those backyard gardens tales, featuring the ever so clever and resourceful Mr. Fox who frequently outsmarted three most unpleasant farmers, namely Boggis, Bunce and Bean, each time he went up to their farms to get his family dinner everyday. The farmes did whatever he coud so they could catch Mr. Fox but everytime they failed.
One day, they ended up fed up with their failures on catching Mr Fox, so they tried to get him at their entrance hole to the Foxes den. Their plan wa sto shoot and kill as Mr. Fox shows himself, but the plan changed to digging him up. In result, they trapped Mr. Fox and his family and other "diggers" starve by the farmers action. Mr Fox could only make this up to his family and the rest of his friends by digging his way out of trouble. While he digs out his brilliant plan, the thre farmers just sits patiently at the gates.
Once again, an awesome story for kids, not quite a morally uplifting book but it's an awesome book I enjoyed reading and I be placing this in the list of books I would be reading to my future kids for them to enjoy this gem. Got to love the front cover. Interesting characters and great plots for kids to actually enjoy.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is the sort of book that every well-read child should own. It bears up wonderfully under repeat readings and is the sort of story that is just begging to be read out loud. Dahl is one of a very small group of children's authors who basically never misfire. I would steer clear of his adult books, but anything he wrote for children is pure gold, from Danny The Champion Of The World to Fantastic Mr. Fox or James And The Giant Peach.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is a richly charactered tale of community and family and food. The food! Apple cider and goose and chickens, and who can forget the doughnuts stuffed with liver? Thankfully, we, the readers, do not have to eat those doughnuts. At any rate, I won't ruin the story by letting you in on the plot, other than to say, how can you go wrong with a story about animals and digging and food and outwitting three nasty farmers? If you do purchase the book and are unhappy with your read, get in touch with me and I'll apologize profusely (but I really don't think that's going to happen).

The fantasy written by Ronald Dahl titled Fantastic Mr. Fox will keep you in stitches. This story takes place on a farm where three farmers lived. One was fat, one was short, and one was lean. Their names where Boggis, Bunce and Beans. The most important character of them all is the fantastic Mr. Fox. Mr. Fox steals from the farmers. He steals chickens, turkeys and cider from the farmers. As a result of his stealing, the farmers want to catch and kill him. But will it work? Check the book out and see.
I recommend this story to kids of all ages. This book is a must read book. It is a humorous book to read. The fox is so sly he steals from the farmers without getting caught sometimes. One time he pushed the limit too far. As a result they went hunting for him. The book is a good book for you if you like to get in trouble. To find out more take an easy trip down to library and check it out.
Ronald Dahl has written more than 8 exquisite books. He is such such a good author himself. This is a book which stand above the clouds. Check it out at your local library and have a ball reading this book.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX is an enjoyable children's book in the traditions of the classic fairy tale and the mischievous fun of the old school Disney cartoons. The human characters are typical of the Roald Dahl antagonist -- selfish, greedy, and sometimes sadistic farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean are caricatures that seem to boast the shadier characteristics of the old Dickens baddies and the absentmindedness of Mr. Gumby of Monty Python fame. The hero -- Mr. Fox, of course -- is loveable and brave as well as cunning and witty. Though mindful of his three aforementioned enemies he shows great compassion to his neighbors.
Unlike some other of Dahl's stories, FANTASTIC MR. FOX is without any crude or even strange humor. There is nothing here to offend or confound. It's simply good, clean fun for reading silently or aloud.

I *LOVED* this book as a kid and re-read it as an adult to preview it for my niece and nephew. I was a little surprised about the story I remembered and the story that *is*. It's honestly brutal about farm life (shooting the foxes) and fantastical all in the same breath - which is fun. The three human characters are almost exact caricatures of alcoholism, gluttony, etc.
Mr. Fox definitely isn't a role model in his stealing to survive...because it was his stealing that got him in the stitch he is now...but, the story is very very fun and moves fast. I still recommend it, but think that it also might be a great way for moms/dads to talk with their kids about right/wrong...especially after the part where Mr. Fox is confronted by one of the other animals about their stealing.
Still a great story and I still recommend it! I love the idea of a little underground village where all the little animals live in relative peace with no fear or threat and outsmarting the mean farmers (which is what I remember about the book from my childhood)!

I thought I'd read just about everything by Roald Dahl, and then I saw news that a new film was coming out based on Fantastic Mr. Fox by Dahl. I'd missed one! I rushed to the bookstore to pick up a copy.
The story concerns Mr. Fox and his family. They survive by picking off poultry from the surrounding farms owned by a set of stupid and repellent farmers. Those farmers, one day, determine to kill Mr. Fox and company, even if it means destroying their farms and all of the other wild animals in the area to succeed. Fox and family have to be creative in order to survive.
It's all, of course, a fun read with Dahl's characteristic humor and that acerbic edge that is so unique to him (though I do think the Lemony Snicket novels have something close). The best thing in this story (and in many of Dahl's) is the way the animals form a rag-tag community in order to battle back against the absurdity and ineptitude of those who hold and abuse power (the farmers). It's a nice vision, within a clever story, and it's one that always has an extra sense of authenticity because of the darkness Dahl's willing to portray in his stories. I'm glad now to have discovered this story, and I'm looking forward to seeing the movie that results from it.

This book is a very quick read. I'm a slow reader but it didn't take me long to finish. It made a good vacation book. To me, Fantastic Mr. Fox is like a mother making up a story to her child at bedtime. It reads like a fairytale. This might have been one of the stories Dahl told his children and he later decided to make into a book. It wouldn't surprise me. It's not a complicated story, with characters that only have one goal but its fun.
I'd recommend this book to scores of people; any Dahl fan, anyone with young children, and people who are children at heart.

This book is great for kids under the age of 11, or for that matter, anybody that has an imagination! The story does not have any plotline, (as with many other Roald Dahl books) instead just a simple story about a family of foxes. How they are able to trick the three mean farmers that shot off Mr. Fox's beautiful tail. The story starts with Mr. Fox asking his children what they would like for dinner; a chicken? A goose? Or a Turkey. After the children have made their choice, Mr. Fox would sneak out quietly into the night and retrieve the poultry. Everything seemed to be perfect for this fox family, until the three farmers in charge of the chicken, goose, and turkeys, did not like this arrangement. They settled a stakeout in Mr. Fox's hole waiting for the perfect time. To find out what happened next, you're going to have to get this book! I loved it the moment I laid eyes on it; since I have quite a huge imagination for my age. The story is exciting, sad, happy, funny, all mixed together into one great book. Roald Dahl is long gone by now, but his books will still delight and entertain those that live after him.

I thought this was the perfect first chapter book for my son. it has lots of illustrations which keep his interest. I wanted to note that there are some themes in the book that I had to edit a bit as I was reading.. lots of talk of killing the fox, guns, drinking, etc. but then, my son is younger than recommended (only 4).

Have you ever thought of being chased by three mangy farmers? That's what happened in the book Fantastic Mr. Fox, by Roald Dahl. In this book, Mr. Fox and his family try to escape from three farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. Towards the middle of the book, Mr. Fox and his children sneak food from Boggis, Bunce, and Beans' storage houses. I liked it when Mr. Fox and his children find Boggis' chicken house #1. I also liked it when all the animals had a great feast. The words in this book are great because you can picture the setting in your head. The message Roald Dahl shared with me was never give up on trying to find your way. Will Mr. Fox and his family escape from three grouchy old farmers? Find out in this great book. But don't take my word for it! Read it yourself!

My six-year-old niece loves this book! I read it aloud to her, a few chapters a night, while she stayed with me in the city over a long weekend. It was a bedtime ritual we both enjoyed.
Mr. Fox (who truly is fantastic, not to mention resourceful and brave!) keeps his family safe from the nasty farmers, who are among the least sympathetic characters (and thus the most delightfully entertaining!) in the entire Dahl oeuvre.
A classic animal adventure. Highly recommended!

Hi, I am a ten years old. I recommend the book Fantastic Mr. Fox because it is full of laughter and funny pictures. This book is about three ugly looking, rich, farmers. Their names are Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. The main character in this story is a fox called Mr. Fox. Mr. Fox has been stealing the farmer's meat. Boogis, Bunce and Bean get tired of Mr. Fox stealing their meat so the three rich farmers join forces to try and [get] Mr. Fox. Read this book and see what types of wacky plans they come up with to try and [get] the fox. Also, find out if they really [get] Mr. Fox or not. This story has a surprising ending.

Dahl makes an ingenious twist by setting a predator as the hero. (After all, unless you're a vegetarian, you're no better than the Big Bad Wolf.)
There are a few weaknesses in the book, though:
What makes the farmers think that one place is any better place for a stakeout than any other place? Anyone who tries to catch a burrowing animal knows that anywhere in any direction is fair game.
Dahl tells us that the farmers are despicable because he wants us to see the fox as the hero. However, he might have done a better job of characterizing the farmers as despicable. Yes, they are fanatical in their effort to catch the fox, but that is not enough.
I still say "Matilda" is my favorite.

This novel, Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl, is about a clever fox trying to outfox the three farmers, Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. The three farmers try to catch Mr. Fox with guns. Enraged, the three farmers helplessly give up to shovels. Finally, the crazy farmers use tractor shovels to burrow a huge crater into the hill, leaving Mr. Fox (being the clever fox he is), his wife, and four children unharmed, but starving.
I really liked the book because it made vivid pictures in my head. One example of this is when Roald Dahl was describing Mr. Fox's plan to get chickens. Another was when he was describing the three farmers. Boggis is fat, and Bean is lean, but all three of them are equally mean. Bunce is short and the others tower, but all of them will make you cower.

I love the book. One reason is because my favorite animal is a fox. Also it is very exciting. In most fox stories they make the foxes bad, but in this one the fox is good, kind and helpful. In the beginning the fox wants to get the chickens but the farmer doesn’t want him to. I rate this book five stars. It took me about thirty minutes to read. Also, it has pictures, but they are black and white. I am 8 years old.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a fantastic book and I read it in one night. My favorite part was...well...a lot of parts! I liked when I first met the three farmers, when the foxes started digging underground to avoid getting shot by the farmers, when they found all the food, and the ending. The book also got me thinking about if it was OK for Mr. Fox to steal. The farmers are terrible guys, but stealing is wrong. My favorite character was, of course, Mr. Fox. He was the coolest character because he was so clever.

When I went to see the movie You've Got Mail with my husband, I was surprised and delighted to see the number of references made to the works of Roald Dahl (including Fantastic Mr. Fox prominently displayed in the Fox bookstore). Dahl is not as well known an author as he should be. Most people know his James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a few know about The BFG, but Dahl deserves better. This is the author to move kids on to when they graduate from Dr. Suess. His books are imaginative and full of adventure, but beyond that, Dahl has a way of using language that is, to use one of his favorite words, fantastic. A gem, a treasure, a must-read!

There seems to have been a major shift in children's literature recently, thanks, of course, to the pre-eminence of Harry Potter. The latter is a hero parents can be proud of - bespectacled, middle-class, studious: the subtext is education is fun, enlightening and empowering.
The major children's writer before JK Rowling was Roald Dahl, who boasted few of these virtues, offering children cruel wit, and a morbid, often murderous mistrust of parents, adults, education and authority in general. He also implied that children could be malevolent and destructive. Parents hated him - I had to discover Dahl through friends; my mum bought me Enid Blyton. There was always the thrilling feeling that you were doing something illicit or conspiratorial reading Roald Dahl.
The hero of 'Fantastic Mr Fox' is a thief, a violater of property and business, and a murderer and torturer of animals, traits unlikely to endear him to the English middle classes. On the other hand, he rejoices in family values, still endearingly in love with his wife, and a great father. Under impossible odds, he tries to save his family and a host of other animals from the cruelty of three vile farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, who are sick of the varmint's nocturnal sorties for their produce.
First they try to shoot him, but only pepper his tail (a deliciously gruesome episode). Next they dig into his tunnel, but he can dig faster. They use huge mechanical diggers, turning a hill into a valley. They try to starve him, surrounding the area with weapon-wielding minions.
The story of 'Fox' is very simple with few twists and turns. The impact, however, can be traumatic, and not just for young children - I read this to my wife (as you do), and we both got very anxious for our heroes, faced with the terrifying industrial might of the farmers. The irony of the story is ecological - while trying to save a few goods for business, the farmers nearly destroy the countryside and an entire animal network; the fox can only do what is natural, which is steal and kill (to which Dahl is faithful with admirable unsentimentality). The image of the three farmers waiting, possibly forever, at the hole for the fox to starve, is chilling and close to Beckett.
Once again, Dahl gets a great deal of pleasure in frightening his young audience, and his way with alliterative insults is as delightful as ever, while Quentin Blake's scribbles, though not part of the original book, are now so synonymous with Dahl's world, it's impossible to imagine it without them.

In Rolald Dahl’s book Fantastic Mr. Fox , there are two disgusting old people named Mr. and Mrs. Twit. They wanted to keep doing tricks on each other. Their tricks continued until they put glue on the tree to catch birds. They got revenge from the monkeys and the ducks for doing tricks, and for putting glue on the tree to catch birds to make bird pie.
This book is amazing because it is a book full of suspense. It is full of figurative language. This is some figurative language, simile, metaphor, alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, this book was also hilarious. For example the description of the characters was hilarious. I urge you to read this outstanding book.

I read this book because my friend recommended it. After I read it, I realized that it was the best book in the world.
Three mean farmers try to catch the fox who has been taking food from their farms for years. Every time they try to catch the fox, they fail. But this time they have a new idea- one that just might work. Will they catch the fox? Or will the fox get away?
This book is well written and it is very funny.
I recommend this book to everyone. I also recommend other books written by Roald Dahl.

I loved this book and thought it was great when the foxes were stealing all the food and the farmers didn't even know. I loved this book and thought it was great when the foxes were stealing all the food and the farmers didn't even know. Do you like stuffing yourself until your fat? Then "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl might be the book you are looking for. The book is about a clever fox who gets in some big trouble because he is stealing from some farmers. The pictures are also great.
This book was very well written. You might even learn a lesson from it. One lesson I learned was, never steal or you`ll be paid back. So, find out if the fox`s family will live by reading this book!

A hilarious story of a fox who outwitted three mean farmers who were out to kill him and his family.
For survival, he devised a fabulous plan where he, his family and friends fed on the stocks of the farmers for life!

In Roald Dahl's chapter book, Fantastic Mr. Fox, he tells a traditional story in which Fantastic Mr. Fox outsmarts three halfwit farmers. Like most foxes, Fantastic Mr. Fox is sharp and cunning. He lives near three farms that belong to very unpleasant farmers. The farmers are described as having nasty personalities, horrible eating habits, and disgusting features. Each night, Mr. Fox steals food from the farmers to feed his own family. The farmers are furious and band together to find Mr. Fox and 'string him up by his tail.' They find his hole and wait for him to come out so they can shoot him.
When Mr. Fox refuses to surrender, the angry men try to dig him out with shovels and then with farm equipment and bulldozers. Eventually, they take all the workers from their farms and scatter them over the hill in order to stand guard so that the foxes cannot escape. As the farmers wait, the Fox family is slowly starving. Mr. Fox gets a brilliant idea and soon he and all of the underground animals find a way to pull the biggest trick of all on the three nasty farmers. They get food for their families off of the farmers' own ignorance and the farmers continue to miserably wait for Mr. Fox to emerge from his hole.
This book is a classic example of Dahl's writing style. The adults are always mean and rotten, while the children and animals are smart and good. This book raises a number of questions that could make for a very interesting discussion. Mr. Fox feeds his family by stealing food from the farmers. Does that makes stealing ok just because the men he stole from were mean? The Badger brings up this important issue and Mr. Fox sweet talks himself out of trouble, but should stealing ever be considered ok?
This book has a good plot and inspires creativity and problem solving skills. The characters have strong personalities and are involved in hopeless yet humorous predicaments. Kids will laugh at the farmers' misfortunes, enjoy the unusual underground setting and cheer on Mr. Fox and his fantastic schemes. I love the way Roald Dahl gives his characters such unusual qualities. This book was an entertaining and enjoyable read.

I recommend this book because it's funny. I liked the drawings by Roald Dahl because they are silly. Boggis, Bunce and Bean are three mean farmers trying to kill Mr. Fox because he keeps on taking their food. Mr. Fox out-smarts them by making them think he is one place when he is another. I especially liked when Mr. Fox and his friends had a feast because no one can hurt them, and I can't believe that the farmers are still waiting for Mr. Fox to come out. (They are probably skeletons and bones by now!) For anybody who didn't read this book, I think you should read it.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of many good Roald Dahl books. There is a Fox who manages to steal food for his family from 3 farmers: Farmer Boggis, Farmer Bunce, and Farmer Bean. The farmers do not like it and try to kill the Fox. For example, the farmers try to dig the Fox out of his hole. The Fox digs deeper into the ground and the farmers never find him. That is only one fantastic thing that he does. Read the book to find out more!

Fantastic Mr. Fox is about a fox who is trying to get away from Farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. He is fantastic because he is able to get food for his family in spite of the farmers' all out attempts to kill him. While the farmers are trying to dig him out, he has has found secret ways into their storehouses, cellars, and chicken houses. My favorite chapter is the Great Feast. Everybody can enjoy this book.

Mr. Fox, after losing his tail to three greedy farmers, goes underground to protect his family. The three farmers, trying desperately to outwit Mr. Fox, stake out, waiting for him. Mr. Fox's family, though, is getting very hungry, as are his neighbors. But Mr. Fox has a plan. Dahl never disappoints in his witty, magical, character-driven, fables for children. Grade: A

No movie can be as much fun as one's own imagination following Dahl in this delightful little book. Most of R. Dahl's books are a bit too dark for my taste, but I loved this one. Quirky and easy to read. Good for 6 to 10. Full review on litkidz.com

The Fantastic Mr. Fox is a strangely funny book written by Roald Dahl. I think Mr. Fox is so smart he could get away with anything he wanted to. The three farmers are mean and extremely stupid! One time, one of the crazy farmers shot off Mr. Fox¹s tail. Ouch! I felt so bad for him. I recommend this book for readers of all ages especially those who have enjoyed other books by Roald Dahl.

This book has been my favorite ever since the first time that I read it. It tells the story of a fox who has to go out and get food from three farms that are nearby in order to feed his family, but there are three farmers, named Boggis, Bunce, and Bean, who don't like the fact that Mr. Fox is stealing from them and they band together to kill him. He then has to find ways to avoid the farmers and save his family at the same time. The book keeps little children hanging on every word and has an excellent ending that they'll love. The excitement makes it a great book to read to little brothers, sisters, or kids. I read it to my sister and she wouldn't let me stop till I had finished the entire book.
Roald Dahl makes some of the greatest children's books that are very imaginative and help develop a child's imagination. I would recommend that on top of this one, get some of Roald Dahl's other books.

I definitely recommend that you get this book for your children, nieces, nephews, and any other kids who play an active role in your life. I loved this book when I was gorwing up! When my older brother turned [...], he decided that he was mature enough to read "real books" as he called them and so he gave me, his then [...] kid sister, his entier collection of Roald Dahl books and other great children stories. I stayed up all night and read as much as I could. Of course I probably spent more time looking at the pictures, as I was just learning English. Growing up in France, I really only gained a proficient english level around the age of 7 or 8. However, I know that it is thanks to Dahl that I am now writing this review, hopefully withough too many mistakes. Mr Fox is also the reason why I enjoy reading so much. At the age of 12 I had read most of Oscar WIlde's work, albeit without understanding the clever subtext. But back to Dahl's favourit Fox. Well the title really tells it all, he's a fantastic fox. And what kid does not enjoy a good story about a witty animal who manages to overcome idiotic traps set by the overwight farmers? None. So if you want your child to learn english while having fun, or simply learn to enjoy reading, then drop off "Mr Fox" by their bedroom door.

I really liked the Fantastic Mr Fox. I would recommend it for ages 8 to 11. It is about a fox who is really sneaky. Every night he sneaks into a farmer's farm. There are three different farms. The farmers were getting mad so they were going to starve the fox so they sat beside his hole with their rifles in their hands waiting for him to die. Did he survive? Read it to find out.

In Fantastic Mr. Fox three rich farmers were trying to shoot a fox. One farmer is fat and has chickens and eats three a day. One farmer is very short. On his farm he has duck and geese, but he eats doughnuts stuffed with goose liver. The last farmer is tall and thin. He has turkeys and a big apple orchard. All he would eat was apple cider. The fox had been stealing their chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. This is a story about three farmers trying to get a fox.
I really like this book. It has a lot of detail. It is funny and written well. Roald Dahl is a great author.

I revisited this classic upon seeing previews for the new film. I must say it is just as charming as it was when I first read it as a little girl. Have you ever seen a fox family so brave to survive from evil farmers?
Mr.Fox and his family have to survive with out coming out of their hole because the farmers will shoot them. Boggis, Bunce, and Bean are nasty farmers after Mr.Fox and the family. They have to face changes when they are living underground. The farmers never stop digging until a certain point. The Fox family used to steal animals from the farms so that is why the farmers are after them.
I would give this book three stars. The theme of the story is never to steal from some one.

This book was so exciting and just another wonderful work of children's literature by Dahl. This is the third Dahl book that my 5-year-old and I have read over the course of the past year, and all of them were hard for both of us to put down. The fox is truly fantastic and is a hero to his family and the other "digger" animals around him. He outwits three farmers and prevails with his cleverness. The underground adventure that the fox takes us on keeps us on the edge of our seat. What a great story for children!

This short, memorable book is one of Dahl's best. The cleverness of the fox in defeating the awful villains is superb. The feast at the end is a fine payoff. With its short chapters and fast-paced plot, it can lure in reluctant readers. Note to the faint of heart: Dahl is often outrageous and seldom politically correct. Kids love him!

This is a really great story for the young, or young at heart. A very simple read for some, for others it provides a wonderfully entertaining alternative view of society norms through a romantic story of a fox, his family, his friends, and a group of three antagonist humans which show the worst humanity has to offer. Unlike the movie, this story is quite simplistic, and yet insightful and complex in many ways. Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach - pulls off another literary triumph from a child's point of view. Illustrated by the author, this reprint of the original is a great size to put into a lunchbox or a briefcase.

While the book is written well, the plot clear and the pages a breeze to read, the ending is a bit weak. Dahl ends the tale rather abruptly, without really a climax or a denouement, leaving you with somewhat of a "that's it?" feeling. It's nevertheless an interesting story, but certainly not one of Dahl's best. "The Enormous Crocodile" (The Enormous Crocodile) is better and funnier.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a short socialist antimorality play -- well-written agitprop in which a petty thief steals from innocent providers of debt and equity capital to farms, then attempts to justify his theft by blaming the behavior and maligning the character of the farms' CEOs. When Mr. Fox's friend Badger has misgivings about the ethics of Mr. Fox's looting, Mr. Fox justifies it by creating a false dilemma and answering it with a strange Orwellian linguistic construct that theft is a kind of violence that is actually peace. In a Fidelista-style "History Will Absolve Me" moment, Mr. Fox seizes power over the animal community, forcing them to live thereafter in a commune, passively dependent upon a thieving Leviathan (himself) for cradle-to-grave "security". Published in the wake of the Communist takeover of Cuba, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a well-written, child-level glimpse into the heady days of late post-WWII collectivist optimism, when socialists had forgotten that their political philosophy requires coercion to implement, and before twentieth-century communism's death toll had been tallied. Parents should be forewarned that, as with Joe Camel's packaging of smoking, Mr. Fox's packaging of socialism seems specifically intended to innure future generations to the ethical issues associated with its movement: This book is designed to trigger, in post-hypnotic fashion, Proustian memories of childhood joy for Mr. Fox's success whenever revenge-motivated theft against social classes is perpetrated by governments. Your kids will adore this book, and will emerge from it singing the punchy limerick that skewers the CEOs. You will feel a vague sense of unease, and may worry if your kids, once thus trained in "social justice" will someday turn you in for the thoughtcrime of looking favorably upon ownership of property.

I read this book as a child and have recently read it again some 20 years later and I have never realized the subversive themes implied in the text. Roald Dahl often wrote disgusting and morbid stories to get his readers to wince at the descriptions, Fantastic Mr. Fox is surprisingly light on the disgusting after the third chapter. Instead Dahl invents a hero who steals from the "rich" "crooks" of Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. He ends his great adventure with a large feast where he shares his food with all of the other ecological refugees caused by the insatiable rage of the farmers.
The major theme of the work, as it appears obvious to me, is that socialism is good and capitalism is inherently bad. I know other apologists of capitalism will say I am reading too much into it. I would say they aren't reading enough into it, which is OK. The capitalists are all ill-formed rich farmers who have perverted appetites and lack all sorts of moderation.
If, as a parent, you wish to raise your child with the idea that taking from the haves and sharing with the have-nots is a good thing, then I highly recommend this book. Fox is a fantastic model of sharing and values. This little book offers a lot to a young reader, especially a good story. But I don't think they will understand the themes until later.

I am 9 years old and enjoyed this book. I especially like how it is written and the story line. It is full of fantastic mystery all the way up until the last sentence. There ae three adults who are trying to kill a fox who is eating some of the food from their farms. The adventure is all about Mr. Fox trying to get away from the farmers and still trying to feed his family and friends. It was fun to live the life of each character from the adults to the foxes, moles, rabbits and all the other animals. If you like mystery and adventure you will love this book.

Well, this is funny becouse it's like saying "whoa, animals always have there way to do it, but sometimes they get it ruined by people who don't understand the way animals do it", like when Mr. Fox gets his beautiful tail taken away. But he could make a feast, becouse that is the way a fox does: "robbing".

Roald Dahl is a master of words and his books are veritable treasure troves of rich vocabulary for children of all ages. While writing a unit on this book, I was challenged myself to find the contextual definitions of some of his words. "Cleverest" is one word, I think he probably invented (wouldn't it be "most clever"?), which can be found in these pages. Whether you're looking for a good book for a literature focus unit, a fascinating read-aloud for your students, or just a good read for your child (or yourself!), this book will be a hit!

The book, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a fiction story and it is a little boring. Someone has been stealing food from the farms and all the farmers joined together to get Mr. Fox and its family.I don't recommend this book because there are too many boring parts. Also there were many words that I did not understand. It has some interesting parts, but not enough to make the book a good one to read.

Roald Dahl, one of the most superb authors of children's literature, has created yet another funny and imaginative story. In this tale, Mr. Fox must save his family from starving when farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean determine to hold seige over his home. From Boggis's Chicken House Number One to the Fox family layer, Dahl takes us on a fantastic journey of creation and delight, leaving the reader with a satisfied feeling one rarely gets.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a slim book; it certainly is not as long as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "The BFG", or other Roald Dahl classics. If you have a young reader who hates to read or has a hard time reading, "Fantastic Mr. Fox" is an excellent choice. It's got great characters to root for, a fun plot and premise, and reads pretty quickly. I gave this to a young friend of mine who dreads reading, and he stayed up all night to finish it!

Like Roald Dahl's many other books, the Fantastic Mr. Fox does not disappoint. It is a great read-aloud chapter book and is very accessible. We first read it with our daughter when she was about five. She continues to love the story.

I usually save long reviews for products that caused problems. So this one's short and sweet. This BOOK is Fantastic. It's short, and a dahl classic. Plus, I believe they're turning it into a movie starring Clooney, Murray, and Blanchet.

This tale is a delightful story of heroism and family. If you ask my opinion, which is very valuable by the way, I would suggest that immediatly pick up this novel and spend countless hours on a child's book.

Have you ever imagined being trapped in an underground tunnel? I read the book, "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl. This book had sneaky characters and they do risky and unexpected things. Some mean farmers trap foxes underground because Mr. Fox is stealing. You can tell the animals are hungry because in the pictures the animals are eating really fast! In this book, I learned you should share your food with other people. Find out what happens when a fox steals from 3 crazy farmers.

Roald Dahl is always funny; but there are also hints of cruelty in each book- pehaps its because of the abuse he relates in his autogiography BOY. Though Mr. Fox must kill for his family to survive, in this book it is done as bloodlessly as possible- and he is quite a hero to lots of animals.

O.K. I'm in 7th grade and it is my all time favorite book. I like fat boggis. He eats the chicken. Bean is kind of ugly he is only skin and bones and bunce is short and fat but he has bad taste in food. I love the feast in the end. MR. FOX.............. I LOVE YOU

I pre-read this book and I am glad I did. I was really bothered that the mother animals were willing to lie down and die and have their children die rather than to try and escape - by helping "Mr. Fox" dig their way out. I don't expect animal behavior to be realistic but this was ridiculous. At the time I had another criticism of the book but I have forgotten it.
