Cleverly's novels deserve to be better known in America. I am very fond of this one
because Joe Sandilands is such a great character.Seances were very popular in the 1920s. Cleverly conveys wonderfully the physical attraction of Simla but also the feeling that the English people living there all have something to hide.
Cleverly conveys the effects of a train crash on those involved.

Se times long series lose their way, but the Monk series seems to remain on target, revealing bits and pieces of the main character in unique ways that keep things interesting and entertaining. Each book is like a visit with a close friend.

I absolutely love Anne Perry & her characters. I could not put this book down till the end. I just wished she went a little farther in the story. .Can't wait till the next book on Monk, Hester and their friends.

For all readers of Anne Perry, her series continues with the same flow of all her books. William and Hester continue their love for each other even when faced with William being tried for murder
Some new characters are introduced along with more info on Monks like before his accident. Overall a great read.

I found this one a bit repetitive of previous plots; didn't quite like the idea of Monk being such a good sailor on the open sea and having sailed to California during the gold rush which seemed to contradict some of the earlier books. Also, the testimony of Beata in court would have hardly been allowed...on the whole, a little disappointing. Also, not enough of Hester, who I like even better than Monk.

Excellent Read! I love all her books and the Monk series is my favorite. As usual, the plot is entertaining and the characters well developed and multi-dimensional. I couldn't put it down and was disappointed when it ended. Now I have to wait a year for the next one:(
