Very interesting but stretched too far, written on epic proportions reminding me of invincible Odysseus. I got a good idea about life in Siberia during the Stalin period and the struggle of the cultured Russians to flee the oppressive regime and seek freedom away from Russia. I also understood the unique qualities of the Sioux Indians and their view of life and honor. I think this book should be a required reading material for middle school students in a social studies class. Nadia Ioannides

This definitely is not your average Louis L'Amour novel! I first read it many years ago after reading many stock western style books and was surprised at the setting, the story line, and the main character. Recently I added this to my Kindle because it's one of those books that doesn't get old. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read and some adventure.

Every few years, I read this novel again. A rollicking good survivor-of-the-fittest adventure with very realistic outdoor scenes that reads like a novel written today. Our hero is no superman, just tough and skilled. With all the grey characters in movies and novels recently, it is refreshing to read about a "good guy." The only complaint, and I am not the first to make it, is that the author never wrote a sequel. Sigh. So take your time reading it. Like a great glass of whiskey, when it's gone, it's gone.

I have read this novel several times, with years in between to the extent some of the detail is" new". A stirring story, with descriptions of a man and of Siberia that only a writer such as Louis L'Amour could achieve with a convincing reality. There is demand for a sequel in this novel and it is to be hugely regretted the author did not achieve this. It would also be a good basis for an exciting movie. Recommended.

I love this author. Have been reading this author for years. My husband especially loved the westerns. This is one of my all time favorites and I have read it many times. It has a great story line, shows American courage, stamina, heart and dedication and reads beautifully. Patriotism at it's finest by a true American hero and author.

I really found the story suspenseful and intriguing, but the reason I didn't give it a five star was I felt the ending happened too fast, and sort of left me hanging! I know it's important to leave something to the imagination, but this seemed to be too much . Nevertheless, it is a good book.

This book, set during the Cold War, is unexpected from Louis L'Amour, but it's SO good! You know, it's actually kind of like a Russian novel, in that it is long, and follows a lot of different characters (although the hero most of all, of course). But I never had a lot of patience for Russian novels, and this book riveted my attention from beginning to end. I stayed up all night reading it.

I wasn't enthused with Louis getting off his western track but thougt I'd read it anyway. It was exciting here and there, story was jumpimg all over the place but written so well that I could understand what was going on. And I have a problem in that area too. But all in all, for me, I'm sticking to his westerns.

So much adventure in this book. Great characters that I really miss now that I have finished reading it for the second time. Joe Mack a red Indian but a true patriot of America. Loved reading about an American sticking it to uses the Russians. So fun reading as he goes back and uses the old ways to fight for his survival. When he brings down that copter with a bow and arrow I cried out with excitement and scared my wife who was watching the food channel or something. Read this book and enjoy .

I normally love survival stories but this one went way too long without a change in circumstances. Also it is nice if the "hero" isn't perfect so maybe you could relate to him a little bit. I like L'Amour westerns better.

GREAT SURVIVAL BOOK! I read this book many years ago when I had to sit around waiting to see if I was picked for jury duty, as you all know that's an all day affair. I couldn't believe how fast that day went because of a book I happended to buy on my way into town. It's just too bad that Louis L'amour didn't write a sequel. This was one hell of a good read.

Thank you! Much easier to read this classic story over and over again, with the larger print on white paper. (versus the smaller print on light brown paper found in the Paperback version this Great Story).

Twenty five years ago someone at work handed me this book and said, "Read this. You won't be able to put it down once you start." He was right. It's a page turner and a great story. I just bought it for Kindle and intend to devour it again. Excellent book by the great author Louis L'Amour. A departure from his typical westerns, this is fabulous reading for anyone to enjoy.

Great tale! Having spent some time in various locations within the former Soviet Union, to include visits to parts of Siberia, I assure the reading audience that this story superbly depicts that vast, harsh but beautiful part of the Russia.

On one hand, this was a little different from the majority of Louis L'Amour's novels. On the other hand, it was another great story, with plenty of action where the protagonist out thinks his opposition and, in typical L.L. fashion, comes out on top. I actually read this book about 20 years ago. Enjoyed it the first time; enjoyed it again the second.

Such an awesome change for a western writer. Definitely one of his best. Between my husband, 4 sons and me we wore out one copy, had to buy a new one. Set in modern day Russia. But the hero, a jet pilot must use frontier, outdoor skills to survive as he tries to hide from those who would like capture him
