Very helpful book! Understanding your personality type is very insightful for many things. And with career, invaluable. This book helped me understand the kind of environment and conditions that best suit me. Also, I was able to use much of the info for job seeking and interviewing (such as better knowing my strengths and weaknesses). I've looked at many "figure out your right career track" books, tests, etc. and they've mostly been crap and gained me nothing. This book is the exception. No book or test can tell you your perfect job. But this one will help you gain a lot of self-knowledge that will help you navigate the territory and increase your odds at satisfaction and finding a good work "home".

The descriptions of the personality types in this book, I feel, are pretty interesting. The problem I have is that the questionaire is far too short to be meaningful. In two categories, the 7 pairs of words BOTH applied to me. I just randomly picked one. Neither of them was more "me" than the other. And yet, the random picks locked me into personality types that may or may not have been "me".

Had I been a younger woman, finding myself labeled as a category type based on this tiny sample of questions might guide me in a direction I should not be going.

I understand that the whole point of the test was for it to be brief, but I wonder... are there many people like me who could not decide which trait was more "them"?

In any event.... once you've selected your type through the quiz, the rest of the book is limited to describing the results of the test. And since you only really care about the letter combinations that pertain to you, there's a whole lot of the book that is just so much wasted paper.

Bottom line: check it out at the library. Don't waste your money on a reference book.

This is a very well-presented take on the Jungian and Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator, as relevant to figuring out a suitable career path. I had previously looked into and took a few "free tests" for the MBPTI, but I never really applied it to anything seriously. It was more of a "huh, that was interesting" moment, and then I moved on. This book changed my opinion on that. I'd HIGHLY recommend it to anyone trying to figure themselves out. At the very least it gives the best systematic breakdown of the MBPTI I've ever seen, and even includes a couple of enlightening chapters on how our personalities change and evolve over time as we become more well-rounded.

For the meat of it the author goes into the detail of what each letter of the Type Indicator really means, and exactly how you might relate and act on it in a personal AND job situation. That was incredibly helpful and made me realize I wasn't very observant/honest with myself when I previously took those tests, and I'm a bit of a different letter combination than I thought I was in the past. Granted, Type does shift a bit as you grow older and more experienced, but it was pretty clear what I was willfully overlooking.

There were two invaluable things I got out of the book on the whole:

1. Reading all of my Type's "behaviors" helped me understand that what I initially thought were my personal depression-related downsides, flaws, and quirks are in fact documented and NORMAL personality traits, and nothing to feel ashamed of or weird about.

2. The book dedicates an entire chapter to each Type, complete with a list of job fields and suggestions that are best for those kinds of personalities to show and use their strengths. That's an AWESOME start for narrowing down what I may eventually want to get more schooling for. I plan to do a bit of research on the suggestions that "pop" at me that I never really considered before.

The only thing I really didn't like was Chapter 24, "Putting It All Together". You're supposed to "create your personal career plan" by going back and writing down bits and pieces of stuff from previous chapters that particularly applies to you. The premise is a good one, to help provide a realistic step-by-step for people who can't piece it together on their own while they're actually reading. But the layout of the "fill in the blank" stuff is just bad, with only vague references to which chapter you'll find what you're supposed to write down in the first place. It feels like an unnecessary and frustrating scavenger hunt. Obviously nobody HAS to use that part of the book, and it's probably more useful for educators (hell, the following part of the book is for psychologists and career councilors), but I'm just being nitpicky. I am an INTP after all.

Really helpful, it presents in a very simple language simple steps to find out how you think. I felt as if someone could understand me completely.
I would highly recommended to those you doubt about their choices while seeking a suited job.

This book does provide a great deal of insight into personality types, and suitable career options. However, it does not explore those personality types which have elements less dichotomous than the model portrays.

This book really delves into personality type in order to determine the right career path for the reader. It does a great job of describing work-related strengths and weaknesses of various personality types.

For both career professionals, as well as individuals seeking career guidance, this is one of the best books out there for incorporating the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator for personality into career exploration. It's great comprehensive self-help guide for individuals beginning with the personality self-assessment and ending in enormous amounts of insightful information about each type, what to look for in a job and work environment. It even offers a variety of different jobs for each type to consider, broken into different career areas. I have used this book more than almost any other careers book and would highly recommend it to anyone.

An average book...More of a "poor man's" deduction of personality types than a full myers-briggs assessment. Would be good for those people who are clearly within the different personality types/functions. For those along the boundaries of particular types, not so much.

Good solid material. Lots of duplicate info for each personality type. I found 4 different types that suited me and they had LOTS of options for vocations/careers. Not sure it got me any further down the road than I already am. This would be a good book for those in school as it might help with determining a major field of study before they graduate.

This book has been very helpful for me in learning more about my personality type. I have been very unsatisfied with my career lately, so I was looking for a different spin on what I should do with my life, because by all intents and purposes, every career aptitude test said I should do what I am currently doing, so I wanted a second opinion. This book has been very enlightening and has also helped me find ways to cope with my current situation until I am at a point where I can feasibly find a new job. Really great book, very informative, easy to read.

For non-psychology majors, a must read to understand the process of finding types of employment in sych with one;s personality. Guidance counsellors may know about this tool, but parents may find it helpful for their high schol or college age children.

Great book. I remember one paragraph talking about working for the next 30 years of your life. You can spend it unhappily or do something about it now, where ever you are - but you must do something.
I would say inspirational, especially if you dislike your job or are thinking of a new career, even at middle age. The book asks you good questions too.

To me without going over the results with a professional you are still in the same boat. The test results fluctuate if you retest depending on what mood you are in. Maybe you may get more out of it than I did. It cannot hurt to try. I certainly liked it much better than the Umbrella books.

I know it sounds cliche, but this book really changed my life. I'm not a big fan of self help books, but when I lost my job in the recession in 2008, this book was a huge help in getting me out of depression and back into a fun and satisfying career. I read the book in the course of a week in nature, did the exercises, and returned to my life with a renewed sense of focus and purpose. The activities inside are extremely useful for helping us learn what we are best at and how to create a viable career around our best gifts and talents. I always keep a copy handy to loan to friends in need of career support. Five years later, I have a thriving teaching practice, am happily married with a family in a beautiful home, and getting out of debt one day at a time. This book really works!

I received the book entitled: "Do What You Are," which I recently ordered. However, as stated in the description, it was NOT new and this version of the publication was NOT the latest (UPDATED) version, as described in the description. There were markings on pages and when I showed it to my career counselor, she said that there was a more current (UPDATED) version of this publication. I was disappointed that I didn't receive a "new and more current" version of this publication, as stated in the original description.

This book was really helpful. What made it different from other personality type books is the real world example. I could read one and say, "that's just like me!" or "that's not me at all". After I finished it, which didn't take very long, I knew what my strengths and weaknesses were. It even gave me a list of good jobs for people like me. For a college student who's trying to decide what they want to do career wise, this book helped seal the deal and choose a major. I highly suggest it to anyone who is unsure who they are or what they want to do.

This book is truly a phenomenal resource for those looking for a new career path (or just starting one). The MBTI has been shown to be an accurate personality test and I was thrilled to find a resource that tries to not only help you find a great job but help you get to know yourself and your preferences, talents, and skills better. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This book is well written. For my personality type this book was a true page turner. I really enjoyed every chapter. I did buy it to "figure" myself out. But I found that I use it on family and friends as well. It helps me figure out their personalities and how best to deal with them or be patient with them. This book not only gave me insight into a few possible jobs, but it has given me a insight in how to be a better wife, mother and friend to those that have a different personality than myself.
