Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World - Deep Work
Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World - Deep Work

Review:"Deep Work" is one of those frustrating books where you whole-heartedly agree with the premise (and it is a fantastic one), but the book falls off the rails when it comes to tactics and process.

Cal Newport is in academia and much of his advice comes from his own "deep work" journey--the process he embarked on to overcome professional setback and create high-quality output at an astounding rate. Unfortunately, much of the process feels well suited for a tenure-track professor but out of t... Read more

What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else
What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else

Review:This book helps to dispel the concept of the “overnight success story” or the idea that high performers are pre-ordained from birth. Rather, the author credits much of their success to what he calls “Deliberate practice”, a highly structured process that involves well designed practice activities, coaching, repetition, feedback, self regulation, building knowledge and mental models.

The mental model concept is particularly interesting, this being the idea that all high performers possess ... Read more

An Anthology (Cedar Cove) - 1225 Christmas Tree Lane

Review:Liked it so much I forgot the time. Started reading new years evening and finished about 4:30 am new years' day. Didn't even notice the time going by. Well told and easy to follow the characters as usual. I like reading books that are 99% story and romance. Read more

Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love
Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love

Review:"Passion" is mentioned liberally in entrepreneurial books and communities, but the reality is there are very few people in this world that have found their passion. It is a life long endeavor, a constantly moving target, yet many entrepreneurs blindly follow their "passions". In fact, this behavior is praised in the startup world. The fact is that finding ones passion requires a lot of hard work, building up skills, becoming a domain expert, and frequent reflection. Boldness needs to be bala... Read more

The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well - Thanks for the Feedback
The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well - Thanks for the Feedback

Review:This book offered great suggestions about how to receive feedback (including an in-depth analysis of why we can be resistant to feedback, especially depending on who is giving it or the their timing). I purchased the book hoping it would help inform my work in Customer Service, but it seemed to be guided more by personal growth than organizational development. It was great for me to consider but did not meet my needs in developing effective customer service surveys. Read more

Gung Ho! Turn On the People in Any Organization
Gung Ho! Turn On the People in Any Organization

Review:If I told you that a book about squirrel spirits, beaver best practices and gifts that geese give could transform your company and according to Tom Peters, "...revolutionize any organization which adopts it, and those that don't won't survive.", what would you tell me? After the success of "Raving Fans" Mr. Blanchard and Mr. Bowles returned to their pithy, aphorism-filled well to deliver their readers an amalgamation of religion, Native American spiritualism and a tried and true underdog story. ... Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers (A NICE GIRLS Book)
Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers (A NICE GIRLS Book)

Review:Received the book on time, but the front cover was bent. I ordered an exchange, but when the second book came, the cover was bent even worse than the first. So I just sent the second one back and dealt with the bent cover. Hopefully, Amazon can do more to ensure customers aren't sent damaged books when they order NEW copies. Other than that, it's a good book that provides a lot of insight about behaviors that women may not think are subconsciously judged by their male (and female) counterparts. ... Read more
