The characters are very lively. Bill, the magistrate; Moses, the shaman and Becky, the poor preacher's wife and heartbroken mother. Of course, Liam, the trooper. They are so real and like your neighbors of next door.

I couldn't get enough of Bob and Laura, the loving father and vulnerable daughter.

This was one of the most interesting and fast moving suspense book I have read so far. Liam was such a believable character and could picture him right in from of me the whole time. I'm glad he found out the real murderers and their motives.

Dana Stabenow is superb at creating authentic Alaska backdrop, strong female characters, and unpredictable mystery. This novel is no different. It's pleasurable diversion with characters you can care about. Not serious literature, but there is plenty of action and northern exposure, populated with small-town iconic personalities and interwoven histories. Never boring, Stabenow doesn't disappoint with this gem.

This was a good mystery and well written. However, I prefer her other Alaskan series with the Kate Shugak character. Both are rich in detail about Alaska and very good mysteries. I suppose men might prefer this character?

I read this because I like mystery books. there are a few graphic sections that are not required nor wanted. Overall its an okay read, but light on plot. Its like a lot of books where a character just jumps up and says I did it and then that's the end. Would be nice for a little more reasoning to be spelled out as to the whys of the events.

Very interesting story of Alaskan fish spotting as a sideline to murder. This is a technique that I am sure many people know nothing about. As a murder mystery it is clever and intriguing, and I look forward to more investigations by the Officer in charge. (I read this book months ago and can't remember his name.)

As always, gripping and attention getting with well drawn characters. Since I read them all in succession I caught an inconsistency which did cause me to give 4 instead of f5 stars to all the books. I am also posting the review on all of the series.

Dana Stabenow writes about Alaska in a way that offers the excitement of a good mystery along with information about aspects of Alaskan life and geography. Her new character, Liam Campbell, is flawed but likable, a good man who has a past discretion that haunts him.

I really enjoyed this book. I like a good mystery. This had adventure in the Alaskan wilderness, too. The main character had a love interest which made the story interesting, also. It is the first of a series of several books. I am looking forward to the continuation of Liam's story.

Excellent. Good character development, quick action, and a little bit of wry humor thrown in. When I laid this one down I wanted to pick it back up quickly. I look forward to reading other Stabenow stories.

Liam steps off the plane into a murder. Before he has a chance to find a place to stay, where the post is or unpack his uniform he has a murder to investigate. The victim worked with Liam's ex girlfriend and all evidence points to her. I found it entertaining and the real killer surprising.

Liam Campbell is a really good character. He has his faults as do we all. This book satisfied my like of Alaska as a setting, a state trooper and a good mystery. Since it was 104 degrees outside while I was reading made me enjoy it even more.

Worth reading. It was interesting earning something about small Alaskan villages while enjoying a good mystery. The author drew out the suspense of solving the mystery until the end, pulling all the loose ends together very neatly.

Neat little story about herring fishing in Alaska, with murder and a love story too. A little Indian history from that region, altogether a very interesting read with solid characters and a vivid picture

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will continue to read the series. I like the main characters and love the introduction of an animal character. Dana Stabenow is an excellent story teller and her description of Alaska is authentic and interesting.

I love Kate Shugak, but Liam Campbell is actually a more human, more flawed character. The setting is fun- what it takes to survive in rural Alaska for the native population and the incomers, who becomes or remains Alaskan- and the mystery is nicely complicated. I'm really looking forward to reading the Shugak/Campbell book.

Great mystery. I'm new to reading Dana Stabenow books my first was her Kate Shugak series. I wasn't' sure if I was going to like Liam Campbell but I was wrong it is just as good as the Kate series I look forward to reading more.

First read this in paperback some years ago. Recent reread as an e-book and it remeinded me why I like both Dana Stabenow and Liam Campbell. Fast moving from the very beginning, interesting characters, good backstory. Now to reread all the other Liam Campbell stories.

Another great story by Dana Stabenow. Rich characters, complex story-line without going overboard, and great cultural overviews make this a good read. Editing was good for the most part. Only a blip here and the, which is a big cut above the rest when it comes to free books. Will definitely read more by this author.

What little I read urged me to continue reading but the language that I did read turned me off. Seems to be a very good writer, hence her/his success. Don't know if this author describes sexual situations but I won't be reading any of her/his books.

I read quickly, sometimes too quickly. This book had at least three places where I had to stop and go back and re-read because I missed a key element. I loved that!
The author makes Alaska come alive; the background is vivid, pungent, palpable, inhabited by real people, some larger than life, yet believable.
This was an instant hit with me, a well-crafted whodunit set in an exotic locale, complete with surprise ending and a nifty unanswered question....

Alighting from an airplane, Trooper Liam Campbell stumbles on a body and runs into an old love. From spotting herring in a plane to stumbling over bodies in a small Alaskan settlement, the action increases. Loved the Alaskan background.

I really enjoyed this book. Need more like it. Had good characters. Believable characters. Having been to Alaska, could identify with the story and the way of life it protrayed. Felt like I was there. Good job.

Interesting characters,a not easily plot to figure out. Kept interest until the end. The first hot and heavy romantic scene
Was Too much the story would of been fine with this toned down. I would read another book of this series

Great read. You become involved with the characters immediately. The story was engaging and very fast paced. When I had finished I could hardly wait to acquire and start reading the next one. ( It is not a disappointment)

The characters are especially well drawn and described. The inner conflicts are apparent and engaging to the reader. The ending was a surprise, as all good mystery novels should be. I intend to read others in the series.

Kept wanting main character to get into uniform that identifies his office. Also the Canadian Mounties are better organized in organization and are respected. Certainly no secrets was to be had in this town

I can't believe it....a well edited free ebook.....an engaging story and well written. Interesting details on life in Alaska. I will look for more Stabenow books. If she's been a NYTimes bestseller and Edgar winner, she must be doing something right.

Loved this book. It filled in more details from the prior Kate Shugak book that Liam and Wy were in. Still miss Kate and Jim...and Johnny. I am completely obsessed with Dana Stabenow' s awesome books and can't wait to continue this series! Love all the details about Alaska!

Dana Stabenow is a marvelous story teller. I don't think Liam Campbell has the appeal of Kate Shugut. Also one of the things I like about Stabenow's books is the background about Alaska. This book is lacking that.
