Review:In true Susie Kelly fashion, right from the first page, I was there with her - it's as if I was sitting at her kitchen table and she was recounting her experiences directly to me - face to face - I've never heard what her voice sounds like but I could hear it in my head. Her fluent style and her descriptive writing means that you are transported to the place she's describing and her gently sharp humour has you smiling and sometimes laughing - even through the occasional tear! To see life throug... Read more
Review:I gave it a 4 star for shipping on time and also for the great condition it was in. However, I have only just began to read it. So if your basing the reading I would rate it a 4 and if not rating the reading than a 5. Read more
Review:For anyone from a western country thinking of travelling to South America, Marching Powder provides an amazing insight into one of the harshest elements of Bolivian society. Like all good books, it is a good read and also educational. There is no glorifying of international drug trafficking and no sentimentality about the results if a person is caught and imprisoned. One of the best books I have read in a long time. Read more
Review:This book concerns the year Dalrymple spends in Delhi, attempting to uncover the secrets and hidden past of this once-great city. Dalrymple skillfully weaves the accounts of his daily life with the history of Delhi. One moment, you are reading about a harrowing taxi-cab ride, and the next page, an account of Shah Jehan's life begins. Few writers can change the pace so suddenly and get away with it, but Dalrymple is able to segue into and out of topics effortlessly.
The pacing and tone of ... Read more
Review:Well-written and intense but so intimate - as if you’ve somehow always known Ariel. It’s a love letter to life that - like many great love stories - dances round and ultimately ends in the land of “what could have been.” I hung on nearly every word, highlighted passage after beautiful passage and wanted to weep with the raw realness of it all. Bravo for one of the most authentic memoirs I’ve read in a long time. Read more
Review:I think if you were thinking of visiting or moving to Italy, then this book is a must to read. This story gives the more personal side of living in Italy ..... the nitty gritty bits of life in Italy. I found the school sections quite boring though and didn't think they should be in there anyway. The main story was the B & B and I think that should have been the main focus. The chapters themselves were short, which kept the interest. All in all a good story. Read more
Review:So. Challenging. To. Read. I was fighting back tears of boredom. I wanted to love this book, since it takes place in Venice, but I couldn't finish the book. Writing style is bland, slowly paced. I would not recommend this book. Read more
Review:We used this walking tour guide for our self guided tour of the squares for our group (about 15 people). It was helpful orienting everyone to the city, as well as provided us with simple, useful information about what we were seeing. Read more
Review:The numerous, excellent reviews perhaps make another unnecessary. But a few words of further encouragement to prospective readers can't be out of order in this case. When author Colm Toibin remarks that a book is "likely to become a classic," it is worth paying attention. That is no fluff. This is a brilliant integration of poignant, reflective memoir and hard-nosed history written with the tension of a fine novel. It would be difficult not to be moved by the story of Hisham Matar's struggle... Read more
