Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story
Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story

Review:a beautifully illustrated graphic novel that brings a new perspective to the world of immortals and the dark gift. once again do the vampires of Anne Rice enchant a reader with a story of sorrow, sensuality and death. Lestat and Louis had their time, now Claudia has her chance. a pity it's a short one. Read more

March: Book Two
March: Book Two

Review:A graphic novel has the creative freedom to do some time travel along the narrative arc of our story. At a time when Euro-Americans feel discomfort while watching mob violence by people given sanction to throw gasoline and plant bombs, this history forces us to see exactly how dangerous it was to become a Freedom Rider--and how necessary that choice was. White supremacists still murder African-American ministers and Bible students. As a result of many generations of pushing social evolution, we ... Read more

Superman: Earth One Vol. 2
Superman: Earth One Vol. 2

Review:Straczynski's second volume picks up nicely where the first leaves off, both humanizing and distancing the Kryptonian in such a unique fashion, it's almost stunning to think that is hasn't been down before now. Truly a great read. Kudos to Straczynski for making the Man of Steel relevant again. Read more

Superman: Earth One Vol. 3
Superman: Earth One Vol. 3

Review:Overall good storyline that shows us what Superman's upbringing would be like in a more modern context. It is clear that this is a new Superman, not the same one we are familiar with from decades prior.

Some minor quibbles still arise: the glasses-only disguise for Clark Kent, for example, but they don't diminish the storyline's entertainment value. Read more

Superman: Birthright
Superman: Birthright

Review:If you just like to see superheros punching things, Birthright isn't for you.

However, Of the origin/year one comics I've read, this one has a special place in my heart.

The pre-Superman experiences really capture the character, but it was about 1/3 the way through that I realized Birthright is a Superman collection must; as Clark is about to make his debut as Superman, he says to himself, "God... please don't let me look ridiculous." Clark Kent is fleshed out as a real person, no... Read more

The Sculptor

Review:Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics" is masterful, insightful and entertaining. He's great on theory and you should read that book.

However, he's not that great in practice. The drawings in this graphic novel are adequate but not striking and don't really contribute to the story. The story is pedestrian and low-energy. To me, it's weak character construction that everyone had a secret weakness, but maybe that's how artists really are. Read more

Star Wars: Darth Maul - Son of Dathomir
Star Wars: Darth Maul - Son of Dathomir

Review:Overall I have loved all things New Canon that Disney has done with the Star Wars universe, but this series is just bad. I love Darth Maul, he is one of the best parts of the prequel trilogy but in my opinion he should have stayed dead. One of the problems that I had with the old Canon was how characters, like the Emperor got brought back to life via cloning or another method. This to me cheapens the world that has been created, it lessens the stakes. That is one reason people love Game of Thron... Read more
