Review:Bernstein writes about his childhood in the years before and during the First World War. On one level it's a love story about a forbidden relationship between his Jewish sister and the Christian boy she later marries. But it also covers poverty, Jewish/Christian relations, and the young men who went to fight in the war and the loved ones left behind. A really good read.
