The Fire Next Time
The Fire Next Time

Review:Just a paperback, but powerfully written. I revisit this book ever so often, so as not to forget the damming effects of slavery on the human psyche. This is a sobering revelation of the cruelity of mankind. Read more

This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage
This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage

Review:Beautifully and honestly written. I was absolutely captivated by Ann Patchett's writing and definitely plan on reading some of her other earlier works. I bought this after hearing her in an NPR radio interview. Highly recommended! Read more

Truth & Beauty: A Friendship
Truth & Beauty: A Friendship

Review:I read Lucy Grealy's "Autobiography of a Face" and liked it; I was moved by her suffering, as I had endured taunts by my schoolmates about my appearance all throughout my childhood, too. I read Ann Patchett's article about Grealy in New York magazine, and was shocked at how unstable Grealy really was. This book is a longer version of the article, and it is even more shocking in its details of how truly mentally ill Grealy was. But what is really appalling to me is the promoting of this book as a... Read more

Wildflower
Wildflower

Review:The grammar in this book is awful.
And the stories literally jump all over the place, with no rhyme or reason as to why.

Yet...it's endearing.
You can literally hear Drew, in our valley girl-esque voice, whispering these stories to you as you read.

And because I happen to love Drew Barrymore (we're even the same age), I really enjoyed her off-the-wall stories. This book makes her seem less "daughter of the great Barrymore legacy" and more "stay at home mom with a wild past."<... Read more

Blue Nights
Blue Nights

Review:If you're expecting Blue Nights to be anywhere near the level of Magical Thinking - you'll be sorely disappointed with this book. I assumed, since the topic continued upon the same subject (of loss) that she had something substantial more to say. I reached the end of the book wondering what it was. Didion should have stopped while she was ahead. There were a few gems about parental regrets and difficulties of aging, but certainly not enough to fill a book. Though no one could say Didion has... Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays (FSG Classics)

Review:I find myself reading and retreading this book, just like her later works. I love her delivery of information and expression of feeling, which is always slightly removed and analytical while paradoxically being heartfelt. Read more

The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories
The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories

Review:She is and would have been a phenomenal author! A couple of the essays were a bit boring for my taste but Marina was so very talented. It's just so horrible she died so young and so tragically. May her family take comfort in that we are now all able to enjoy and appreciate her talented work. Read more

All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten
All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

Review:This book contains all the lessons we need to know to lead a successful life. It is a reminder that we learned long ago the lessons we need in Kindergarten to be successful at whatever endeavor we choose. I recently used those lessons with my high school graduating seniors. It is worth repeating because I feel we have forgotten the lessons. Arthur L. Williams Ph.D. Principal Ann Arbor Huron High School. Read more
