Review:Don't believe the editorial review by Gilbert Taylor. Sagan only mentions Pat Robertson in passing. It was actually sort of a footnote about how the televangelist got his fanatical anti-abortion viewers to skew the results of a phone survey.
The phrase "billions and billions" is not really Sagan's "cliche", because he never actually said it. But Sagan's description about how that fallacy got started is actually very amusing, so I can't imagine why someone would call it "flat", but I get t... Read more
Review:The book is a bit dated of course as it was written in the 1970's, but the material and the presentation appeared to be timeless. I had never read much by Dr. Sagan prior to reading this and this was a great introduction to his clear thinking and writing style. His theories on anthropology will remain current but it was humorous to read of new computer games, such as Pong and Space Wars. Read more
Review:Research and getting out to those of us outside academically is a gift for sure. It helps to know we aren't all as far along as we think with the unconscious ethnocentric wiring we come into this world with. And that cultural change is slow. That said, those who choose to be participants in academic research may not always be representative of the rest of the diverse multicultural populations exploding in the US and elsewhere. Read more
Review:a good and informative read. well written and very interesting without recourse to technological bamboozlement. there are other books available with a more technical bent if that's what you're interested in, however if you want a portrait of the man himself then this is as good a place as any to look. the kind of book that will encourage further study. Review:I enjoyed the very casual tone taken by the author in this book. Parts of it are conversational, but still delivery a highly academic discourse. I appreciated the breadth of arguments and examples put forth, and the last few segments are especially entertaining and engaging. Read more
Review:I leave this book on the table for my families who bring their children for music lessons. I have had parents actually order this book from reviewing it in our music studio. There is so much wise counsel for young and old both. This is wonderful book for all ages. Sincerly, Roberta Marie Kiszer Proprietor: Joyful Noises Music Studio..... Read more
Review:Love this book. Can't find a single page that's not interesting. This is a resource book so easy to read & author describes things simply so reader follows along without a glitch. Love this book & his "How to Read Water" book also. Hope to buy more over time for each grandson. My son who is 26 and an outdoorsman type says he never wants to lose this book, it's a keeper. Thank you also for the price being affordable. Read more
Review:Some years back I set out to read as many books as I could that purported to speak in favour and against the existence of God, and see where the evidence led. I won't bother you with my findings, we all have to make that journey ourselves.
With the greatest respect for Mr. Sagan, his arguments were very simplistic, superficial, specious, and, quite frankly, not worthy of being called scientific (alliteration not intended). This is not meant to demean the great man, but from reading numerous b... Read more
Review:As a mental health professional I have always pushed exercise (when appropriate) and the author takes the establishment to task for their underutilization of this powerful tool. Would be nice to have some cautions about "overtraining" and exercise addiction but a very good read and a great message. Read more
Review:Hikers and armchair travelers alike will love this thoughtful meditation on all things trails. A true work of literature on par with some of the great nature writers, including Barry Lopez, Robert MacFarlane, John McPhee. I look forward to more works from this gifted young writer and explorer.
