Love this book. Can't find a single page that's not interesting. This is a resource book so easy to read & author describes things simply so reader follows along without a glitch. Love this book & his "How to Read Water" book also. Hope to buy more over time for each grandson. My son who is 26 and an outdoorsman type says he never wants to lose this book, it's a keeper. Thank you also for the price being affordable.

A very interesting read which gives good insight into finding your way around the countryside without the aid of a GPS and the other modern aids. Amazing how modern aids have made us forget the obvious navigational help that nature has provided us with. More Photographs and illustrations would have made the book more interesting and helpful !

I hoped this would be a good reference book, clearly divided into sections that would be easy to flip to for information on specific topics, along with boxes, diagrams, images, bullet points, etc. At least there is an index. But it's more narrative, and a dry one at that, than handy reference book. It also references UK terrain, which is not helpful to a US reader. Based on the cover, I expected similar illustrations on the inside. I would LOVE a book that used such imagery to actually illustrate the lost art of reading signs in nature. At times it seemed this wasn't written for beginners either, as concepts and words were not explained well, and it seemed the author just liked to preach about how great he is at navigating through nature and reading the land instead of teaching.

Very interesting reading although from England some of the same signs are true here in US. Things that you see in everyday life if you are hiking along woods and forest paths.

Another book bought for my husband who's very into phenology. He chuckles out loud sometimes while he's reading it and reports many of the things he's read. Always a good sign.

If you're into this kind of thing, this is a good one.

A lot of really interesting stuff here, and the book is very well written. Be forewarned, however: a great deal of the techniques/knowledge Mr. Gooley imparts here presuppose that the reader is well up to speed on tree/plant identification. Unless/until you are, you will gain little practical good from it.

I know that every day thinks are happening around me of which I am not in the least aware. I am not particularly observant like a fictional detective. However, I do like reading from others who are more in touch with the world around them. I try to be a little more like them. I am not a woodsman by any stretch, but I found this book entertaining.

Ironically, when I choose this book to review I was looking forwarding to using it as a way to understand and enjoy the outdoors more than I have and boost my skills. It turned out that I wound up in the hospital for several weeks during the publishing date and I decided to read it anyway. How lucky I was. Not only did this city girl learn more than I thought possible about the outdoors but it also gave me an escape, an education and a way out of the hospital to new adventures in my mind. I think pictures and better illustrations could only enhance this book. Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book for an honest opinion.

Like astronomical lore and clear explanations for finding direction. Wish someone from the US wrote a book as clearly (suggestions?). Very descriptive. Interesting side stories and examples.

Written for those interested in hiking / walks in new places. A must if you lose your cell phone signal while hiking.

I enjoyed the author’s easy-going writing style. Reading this book is like taking an evening stroll. It offers techniques and methods for finding your way which vary from simply practical to complex, but they are always entertaining.
