Summerland: A Novel
Summerland: A Novel

Review:Baseball is America's pastime and a game loved by many devoted fans. Ethan Feld is not one of those people. Every at-bat is another begging for a walk. His baseball obsessed father tries to encourage him but Ethan has no love for the game, or does he? One morning, Ethan wakes up to find a fox-like creature on his stomach. This "shadowtail" takes him to the Summerlands, one of the four worlds on the lodgepole, a tree that holds them all up. All of the creatures in these lands are obsessed with ba... Read more

Mickey Mantle and the End of America's Childhood - By Jane Leavy
Mickey Mantle and the End of America's Childhood - By Jane Leavy

Review:Leavy covers Mantle from boyhood in Oklahoma, his days as a Yankee to the day he dies in vivid, complete detail. Nothing is left out or edited. She goes into great detail about his exploits as a homerun hitter measuring the exact distances of tape measure shots. His relationships with buddies Billy Martin, Whitey Ford, Hank Bauer, his father, mother and family are all developed as well as his drinking, not caring about his God given gift of a terrific baseball body and talent, the disastrous day... and Joy Inside the Mind of a Manager
and Joy Inside the Mind of a Manager

Review:This was a mesmerizing read for me--someone who usually doesn't stay interested in most books. As an avid chess player, I often read chess strategy books and get engrossed in the mental challenges of the game. I have always tried to delve deeper into the mental aspects of baseball as I have gotten older. This book offered a great insight into how the game really feels and how difficult the decisions really are for a manager. Being a life-long Cardinals fan, this book was a no-brainer for me.... Combat Shooting with Massad Ayoob
Combat Shooting with Massad Ayoob

Review:Massad Ayoob provides a wealth of information on the topic. I have enjoyed reading other titles from this author, but this is the first one I've purchased to read on my Kindle. As another reviewer has said, the Kindle edition is full of typos and errors. I am not just talking about every couple of chapters, it's more like every other paragraph. After a while it becomes quite distracting and very tiring. The publisher really needs to issue an update with corrections. Read more
