The Ringworld Engineers
The Ringworld Engineers

Review:I guess I'm just not a fan of mystical/science fiction. This work - - and its related series - - came highly recommended to my by a friend. I only made it through the first 8 or 9 pages before hitting the "delete" button. Read more

Fate of Worlds (Return from the Ringworld) (Known Space)
Fate of Worlds (Return from the Ringworld) (Known Space)

Review:I read Ringworld many years ago and recently learned that there are sequels. The original book was one of my all time favorites, and this was the next I tried. This book felt like I was reading children's literature and made me wonder if I had grown up too much to appreciate Niven at this point in my life. Disappointing. Do not despair, try Ringworlds Children, it is classic Niven and much more fulfilling to read. Now I need to locate the one that came between. I am guessing the collaboration is... Read more

200 Years Before the Discovery of the Ringworld (Fleet of Worlds series Book 1)
200 Years Before the Discovery of the Ringworld (Fleet of Worlds series Book 1)

Review:I've read and enjoyed a lot of Niven during the five decades I've been reading SF, so I was looking forward to reading this book when it turned up on the new books shelf at my local library. Unfortunately, though, I was disappointed because this was a pretty un-dynamic and ultimately uninteresting book. I like big, dynamic books that grab me, that present exciting new characters, concepts or situations and that make me stay up reading long into the night; this was not that book. There are some... Lucifer's Hammer: A Novel
Lucifer's Hammer: A Novel

Review:Thought I'd give this a try as a huge fan of The Stand. I've also read Swan Song. The plot was interesting, but the execution was pretty boring. The character interaction was poor, there were few likeable characters. The descriptions of weather changes, flooding, etc were the best part of the story for me. Read more

The Collapsing Empire (The Interdependency)
The Collapsing Empire (The Interdependency)

Review:The universe-building was a good start, and the into of the two main characters was cool. However, it went downhill from there.

-Cool universe with dozens of human settlements on asteroids and space stations. Why then is the one habitable planet a backwater no one cares about? Wouldn't distinct cultures develop over a thousand years on all these far flung place? What about physical changes?

-Bad guys weren't really bad. If the good guys are so incompetent maybe change isn't so... Read more

Shipstar: A Science Fiction Novel (Bowl of Heaven)
Shipstar: A Science Fiction Novel (Bowl of Heaven)

Review:Sequel to 'Bowl of Heaven', continues the story started there. A totally fascinating concept (an artificial "planet" the size of our solar system, driven through space by a "captive" star), the story (spanning both books) is well written, as always with Niven and his collaborations with other authors. Character development is "thick enough" for good science fiction, though a little "thin" if this were a more "conventional" genre of writing. The people are a huge part of the story, but there is a... Read more

Bowl of Heaven: A Novel
Bowl of Heaven: A Novel

Review:This book represents the last time I pay so much for a book, from someone I've never read before. The story, and I know this is my opinion, is boring. It's low in original sci fi content, and it's unsatisfying. It's a buncha future humans stranded in a jungle, flailing about, while super superior aliens study them, with typical faux-interesting oddball-alien terms thrown in. It's been done before. Steven Baxter has done humans in an alien jungle far more effectively than this. It have made it ab... Read more

Ringworld: The Graphic Novel, Part One
Ringworld: The Graphic Novel, Part One

Review:If you didn't realize this was a graphic novel, you didn't bother to read the description, and probably can't read at all. Even though the Puppeteers and Kzinti are a little cartoonish for my tastes, this is still a great retelling in an awesome media. Read more

Review:Item received promptly and in excellant condition. I read this book in paperback several years ago and it is my favorite "alien invasion" book. Niven and Pournelle are masters of the genre, and I am overwhelmed to at last have this in my collection. I will certainly look forward to what other treasures this dealer has to offer. Read more

The Final Dawn Omnibus - Final Dawn Box Set
The Final Dawn Omnibus - Final Dawn Box Set

Review:I’m more of a zombie fan when it comes to post-apocalyptic fiction but these books pulled me in and didn’t let go. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, masterfully written, and I fell in love with the characters and rooted for them the entire book. I’m not ashamed to say I cried at the end because I did. It’s a testament to how wonderfully written this story is. Truly an amazing read! Mike Kraus is now one of my favorite authors. Read more
