The Liars' Club: A Memoir
The Liars' Club: A Memoir

Review:There is one point that Karr makes in this book that rings true: If there is more than one member in a family then it is dysfunctional. My only positive note is that the book is easy to get through. In fact, very easy reading, so it (thankfully) goes fast (so I will admit here I may have gone into la-la-land as I was reading the book. As I kept reading I kept waiting to read about some horrid action taken place, or an incident or two, that adversely affected Karr, but other than the time whe... Read more

The Undertaker's Daughter

Review:In 1959, when Kate Mayfield was in kindergarten, her family moved to Jubilee, Kentucky so that her parents could open their own funeral home. In this memoir, Kate revisits the first 20 or so years of her life, much of it spent in the three storey house which was both a family home (upstairs) and a funeral home (on the ground floor). She and her three siblings had to remain very quiet and out of sight whenever a service was taking place.

An Oral History of Women in World War II - The Unwomanly Face of War

Review:Svetlana Alexievich's book, "The Unwomanly Face of War," is about Russian women's lives on the front in World War II. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky were the book's translators. The author was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature for "polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time." This book chronicled historic accounts of various Russian women on the front line against the Nazis during World War II. The author traveled around Russia and the former Soviet Uni... Read more

The Bondage of the Will
The Bondage of the Will

Review:WARNING - Do not buy Sovereign Grace Publishers Henry Cole translation of Bondage of the Will.

After slogging through 95 pages of its barely understandable jargon, I asked my dad, Pastor Gerry Mohr (LCMS) if Luther's reputation for intellect was, perhaps, a bit unearned. He replied, "Cole whipped out his translation effort in three months or less. Luther's original is a direct reply to a work by Erasmus directly aimed against what Luther was teaching. Cole does not take the time to und... Read more

Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography
Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography

Review:Fantastic book. I grew up in MN, and my mother's and father's families grew up in the same Southern MN area. Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books always rang true with my family stories. This is a great historical book, the foot notes show the recorded history and reveal that Laura Ingalls Wilder only at times "stretched the truth". This book makes Laura's stories even more 'true'. I cannot recommend it higher. 10 stars would not due it justicve. Read more

My Life on the Road

Review:Gloria Steinem writes about different kinds of travel with her usual gentle humor and carefully crafted chapters. She introduces the reader to friends she has made along the way, showing her love and admiration for them. But most importantly, like any successful organizer she teaches through memorable stories of her family and of many others from whom she has learned the importance of balance in life. Read more

The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II
The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II

Review:The book is an informative special slice of history for the predecessor organization of NSA. It is an accurate reflection of the gender prejudices of the times and the lives of the young women who answered the call to Washington early in WWII. The book pays tribute to a set of very talented women that have been overlooked by history books. I know from my work on the history of the Pacific War how important the code breaking was to the success of the war effort. The first part of the book mov... Read more

Man's Search For Meaning
Man's Search For Meaning

Review:This is not just a book about Dr. Frankl's experiences as a concentration camp (Auschwitz) survivor. It is an inspiring explanation of how a person's outlook on any situation is not subjective, but instead, objective. One's purpose in life and meaning on this world does not have to be defined by society's measure of success. Very inspiring, to say the least. Read more

A Brief History of Humankind (Spanish Edition) - Sapiens.
