Birds of Ohio Field Guide, Second Edition
Birds of Ohio Field Guide, Second Edition

Review:It's an excellent source of information that's easy to use. We carry it with us whenever we're out in nature. I plan now to buy one for Wisconsin and New York as well to give to family members living in those states. Read more

National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds
National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds

Review:I love these field guides. They are compact, full of information, contain high quality photos of each entry to make identification unmistakable, and contain every bird I have ever needed to look up. These may be the best field guides out there. Read more

Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America (Peterson Field Guides (Hardcover))
Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America (Peterson Field Guides (Hardcover))

Review:Pros: Bigger format, bigger pictures, arrows pointing to major identification characteristics, some subspecies and color variations.
Cons: Some pages too crawded, so it is not obvious which name/description goes to which picture (that might be a problem for a begginer), different order of groups (book starts with geese, most other guides start with loons), few pictures not very accurate (bill shape on some warblers). Read more

Salt
Salt

Review:I am a qualified Nutritionist and Naturopath and I appreciate reading books that are rich in meaningful information. I bought this book because I had increasingly noted that the concerns we have about table salt are unfounded. So I decided to do some research. To get a good handle on salt, I needed to go back in time (hence this book) to understand the use of salt throughout history, and then relate that to more recent studies that were conducted.

There were as many studies claiming salt... Read more

Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't
Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't

Review:I just finished reading Jeffrey Pfeffer's POWER and tomorrow it will become required reading for all my MBA students. Pfeffer has spent his career researching and writing about power and this is his best work yet. You don't have to be an academic to understand, appreciate and use what Pfeffer has learned about power, but, if you are an academic, you will appreciate how he has backed up all his advice with good data. Anyone planning a career in management needs to understand power--how to get ... Read more

and an Unforgettable Journey into the Alaskan Wild
and an Unforgettable Journey into the Alaskan Wild

Review:The premiss is a good one: the father daughter thing sells books. This is a book I wanted to like but it just couldn't hold my attention. The Last Frontiersman, also by James Campbell was more interesting. At least to me. But it no doubt strengthened their relationship. Although I doubt this would fit into the self-help category. No amount of book sales will equal their bond. Read more

Ecotopia: 40th Anniversary Epistle Edition
Ecotopia: 40th Anniversary Epistle Edition

Review:My first experience with ECOTOPIA was with my 11th grade English class in Anchorage, Alaska. We were each given a copy of it to read, discuss, and write about. That was back in April of 1990, when Earth Day was 'big'. Now Earth Day doesn't get much mention at all, just a few seconds in the news on April 22. It is sad to see that the environmental enthusiasm has lost its momentum with my lost and now markedly apathetic generation: Generation X (as the media marketers labeled it to sell thi... Read more

Ecotopia: A Novel
Ecotopia: A Novel

Review:This was pretty good, not great, but worth reading. It has lots of ideas about how we could live better lives without being to overtly preachy, but it is preachy. It's an interesting take on ecology and what would be the best way to live. There were many good ideas, and the love story was a good addition, but not all that compelling. It was more about social change and interactions than personal interactions. Read more
