Review:As stated in the book (209) chapter 8: "The previous chapter introduced basic issues of model evaluation and explored the question of what makes for a good model. We developed detailed calculations based on the expected value framework. That chapter was much more mathematical than previous ones, and if this is your first introduction to that material you may have felt overwhelmed by the equations. ......"
Even thought this not my first time with this material I found this book unclear. Al... Read more
Review:This book is fundamental for the ML enthusiasts conceptual bookshelf.
Some have complained about it's lack of technical detail; mind you, it's a conceptual book and should not be read for technical know-how but more for understanding the spirit of the machine learning researcher and what the big picture is all about. Read more
Review:Excellent book. Gives the foundation of ML very well. He even includes other books to read along with his. I would suggest reading this along with Sebastian rashkas book, a book on introduction to statistical learning. Read more
Review:Easy to read. The tests and exercises drive the chapter information home. I'm not an experienced coder, and I thought I would have trouble learning this, but this book is the best way I have found to make the information stick. Read more
Review:The exercises is great. I learn much quicker from doing that reading, and this allows me to do that. However, the timed exercises are mostly broken and reads every input as going over the time limit. This is very frustrating. Please fix the timer. Read more
Review:This is a really interesting book and it opened my eyes to a lot of new ideas that I hadn't really considered before.
It's of those sort of books you pick up now and again when you have 10 mins here and there or great on a long plane ride when you actually want to learn something rather than just get lost in fiction. Good read. Read more
Review:The book arrived damaged and dirty. Someone at the warehouse must have dropped it, and it must have gotten hit at least twice when it fell; furthermore, the box cover was intact. The CD inside is sealed and intact, and the pages have clean surfaces; that's a relief. But, I am not happy paying for a new book that gets to me looking dirty and damaged; it's not what I paid for. Review:Sarah has a tagline "Funny, because it's true." (Sorry, is that trademarked?) This book had me laughing out loud over and over because, YES, it's SO true. Many of us have unknowingly been following Sarah's advice for years and have built stellar careers on these principles. You'll read a little vignette, and then nod, grin and say "I know that guy... he works here..." Sarah describes small, subtle quirks of human behavior that I'll bet you've seen in YOUR workplace. You should get a couple ... Read more
Review:I fall between the polarized views of the reviewers of this textbook. This is a well-written introduction to Lisp programming and Scheme, and introduces many important concepts in Computer Science. The problem with it is that it is not a suitable book for a beginner -- I don't consider it a gentle introduction to computer science -- and for someone experienced enough to be comfortable with its ideas, it doesn't introduce many interesting ideas until Chapter 3. Unlike other people I guess,... Read more
Review:Admittedly, I haven't read the apparent king "Introduction to Algorithms".
But Skienna's approach is very digestible. I really enjoyed the writing and the concentration on explaining the concepts instead of vomiting up a wall of greek symbols. I would have loved to actually have taken a class from this guy. Read more
