Addiction & Recovery
Review:This has been a wonderful read--challenging the traditional thought that addiction is a disease takes guts. She's running up against the $$ system that is so entrenched with maintaining this fallacy. (how come smoking is never considered a disease btw?)
I agree with her--addictions are a learning problem and if we spent more time helping teenagers learn how to manage thinking and feelings, we could prevent many of these learning errors and addiction would not end up filling the void. S... Read more
Review:I started reading American Pain because I saw the episode about pain clinics on "American Greed".
I enjoyed this book because it didn't glamorize pain clinics/ opioids .It made the story raw & real but I didn't like the way the author described Appalachian people capitalizing on their heartache and grief .It was uncalled for....
I've lost friends, good people ( at one time) to drug mixtures that literally cost them their lives so in certain parts of the book the author seemed a little F... Read more
Review:At the outset, I found this book readable because of Wurtzel's laughably bad writing. It was almost fascinating how someone with nothing to recommend her could be so grandiose and egomaniacal. At one point early in the book she even compares herself to a vietnam vet, and says that if you haven't been a vietnam vet, that you don't know what it feels like to be her. Excuse me, but has she ever been a vietnam vet? However, such stupidity, after page 50 or so, simply becomes intolerable. To think th... Read more
Review:This book has made an incredible difference in my life. I was struggling with a drinking problem and didn't know how to get help for myself. I was afraid of a group setting such as AA and I didn't know what to do besides something like that. I started this book with a strong determination to change my life and that is what has happened. The action steps in the book helped me to identify when and why my drinking became a problem. As a result, I have been able to work on those root causes and begu... Read more

Review:The book struck me very hard in the beginning and I was under attack with emotions while reading. I have not experienced anything like this nor know anybody to close to me that has felt this type of experience or pain. But I was able to take in the dedication, love and HOPE that David Sheff displayed to his son Nicholas. I read this book within 6 days, i was so involved in it. The disclosure of thoughts, emotions, stories and actions is what makes this story real and attractive. My 2 year ol... Read more

Review:This is the heartbreaking and hilarious story of Mr. Burroughs' struggle with substance abuse and his recovery from his crazy past life. The reader is riveted by the precipitousness of his fall, enthralled by his honesty, and guiltily entertained by his humorous telling of the almost unbelievable story of his bizarre upbringing. We are left feeling very grateful that Mr. Burroughs has survived and continues to grace us with his brilliant wit and engaging storytelling. Read more
Review:Well researched and well written look at what small town life has become like in the early 21st century. The book is about the changes in rural America that leads to a drug epidemic; a "war on drugs" does not fix this problem. Read more
