A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History
A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History

Review:For anybody who likes this book, check out Human Accomplishment by Charles Murray, a bigger (and more scholarly) attempt to categorize four thousand important people in history. I'm sure lots of readers would like to change the order (and/or contents) of Hart's list of 100 influential people, and somehow get offended that Hart ranked so-and-so higher than such-and-such, but this book is just plain fun to read, especially if you are from Scotland (which is disproportionately represented). Why the Greeks Matter (The Hinges of History) - Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea
Why the Greeks Matter (The Hinges of History) - Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea

Review:Thomas Cahill's "Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea: Why the Greeks Matter" is another in his series of books entitled "The Hinges of History" in which he focuses on an historical civilization and tries to show their impact and relevance on the modern Western world, all written for a general audience. This is a very shallow and unenlightening survey of Greek culture, tinged with some annoyances of Cahill's writing.

Cahill's doesn't try to deliver a general history of Ancient Greece. His discussi... Read more

The Monster of Florence
The Monster of Florence

Review:When Douglas Preston moved his family to the outskirts of Florence in 2000, he thought he was just going to enjoy la dolce vita and write a mystery novel. What he found was both more interesting and scarier than any story he could have come up with on his own. As he was interviewing a journalist named Mario Spezi who was an expert on the Italian legal system, Spezi casually mentioned that just outside the villa Preston and his family had rented, was the site of one of the most gruesome murder... Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World
Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World

Review:World War I ended with an inconclusive result. Basically the Germans lost because they were exhausted. France was in ruins. Germany was never invaded.
The "Big Four" sat around the conference table to divvy up Europe and the Near East and we have lived with the results ever since.
This book details the events that took place in Paris in 1919. Woodrow Wilson, who was already ill, was obsessed with his 14 points. However, those points did not always fit what the big powers saw as their ... Read more

SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome
SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome

Review:I was disappointed in SPQR. As someone said in our book club, the author seems more interested in histography than in writing a narrative history of the Roman Empire. Can't fault her expertise, but I found this book exceedingly repetitive and therefore pretty full Read more

The Story of the Captivity and Life of a Texan Among the Indians
The Story of the Captivity and Life of a Texan Among the Indians

Review:The honest and frank style makes for a wild ride. What young boy wouldn't trade their pedestrian life to ride into manhood with this adventure? This is glimpse into the desperate times at the end of the plains struggle as the hide men and their guns forced horse culture of the plains to the reservation, broken, starving, but defiant.
