Review:This book caught my attention when I read the title & ordered it immediately. My brother's best friend in school was 6'8" and he had 2 cousins just as tall or taller. It was a bit of a handicap for them in those days (1960's) because the rest of world was so much shorter and it was challenging for them to live with the American standard. I wonder now if those 3 tall handsome guys share the DNA of the giants in this book. Thank you Richard Dewhurst for digging up the truth about the "giant" ... Read more
Review:This is an incredibly important work that should be widely read by those interested in the clash between the West and the Middle East that caught the West off guard on September 11th, 2001. The clash goes all the way back to the very beginnings of Islam and the manner in which the Islamic religion and culture were spread by force, treachery and extortion throughout the Middle East, North Africa and eventually Spain. It only took 79 years from the death of Muhammad for the armies of Islam to beg... Read more
Review:Great book. Interesting for its telling of a little-known story. It enlarged my understanding of the Civil War and the attitudes of South Carolinians at the time. Wonderful to see an outsider's view into pre-war Charleston. It also gave me a better insight into Great Britain's position on slave trading and the war. Most of all, this is an excellent book for the narrative style that makes it as readable as a novel, while being a well documented historical work. Read more
Review:About half of this book is stories you have already read about in other books. The second half is entirely about Benghazi, a long detailed description of what lead up to it, then a long 'what-if' section that describes several different scenarios in which the loss of life could have been prevented, followed by a complete reprint of the "Interim Progress Report for the members of the House Republican Conference on the events surrounding the September 11, 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya"... Review:This book was likely never edited, at least not by a professional. Spelling and grammar mistakes are widespread. Even descriptions under photos are cut off. Much information is repeated unnecessarily and the histories of each individual are only covered superficially. The title is very misleading as the 'soldier stories' are never really told in their own words. I can only remember reading two or three quotes from the individuals themselves. I regret purchasing this and I find it a bit suspiciou... Read more
Review:Love it. I bought this on preorder before it was even released. I wanted one for every woman I know, but started with just one for my mom, the person who taught me to be a proud woman and feminist. She loved it, I loved it, and I'll be ordering more for not only the adult women in my life, but for my young niece too. I learned about so few women during my history classes, that I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't even know some of the women in this book. I love that it covers women from throug... Read more
Review:I ordered this book hoping to gain an insight into the Japanese mindset. It did this admirably. Obviously, an island culture is insular, and around 800 AD CE they lapsed into a culture that glorified the warrior, and not the scholar. This background is still apparent in Japanese culture. If you are interested in Bushido, and the attendant culture that goes with it, I recommend. Read more
Review:First, I want to emphasize that I think this book is excellent and I recommend it to anyone interested in the subject matter. I like how it is organized chronologically, following the actions of the various criminals in parallel. It's loaded with details that I found very interesting and I think it was about time to debunk the myth about Purvis who was really more of a bumbling, over-confident publicity hound than he has generally been portrayed. It's also interesting that he wasn't even in cha... Read more
Review:Very few academic historians write narrative history these days; they prefer history as social science. This book shows what such an historian can do if she does write old-fashioned narrative. The book is superb. It covers the Mexican war, its origins, course, and consequences. The author focuses on several particular individuals who were important political actors, such as Henry Clay and Abraham Lincoln. And she covers the antiwar movement, too, which was much more significant than I had realiz... Read more
Review:Well researched and written (as expected). The book brings together materials from many current and out-of-print sources. Deals with ALL the unsuccessful and successful Allied and Norwegian efforts against Germany's use of Norwegian heavy water for their atomic weapon production efforts. Read more
