Strange Stories and Shocking Trivia from Inside the White House
Strange Stories and Shocking Trivia from Inside the White House

Review:I learned some very interesting things about our first ladies, and found them sometimes more interesting than their husbands. A really good read for someone who likes history from the personal point of view. I highly recommend this work, and getting it on Kindle Fire makes it a really good deal. Read more

and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies
and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies

Review:This reads like a novel - and it is apparently well-researched; check out the "Author's Note" and the footnotes. If it weren't for the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), so much history would be hidden forever. I couldn't put it down. Having a life-long interest in this subject, it is gratifying to see that Elizabeth Smith Friedman gets the over-due recognition she deserves. Read more

The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis
The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis

Review:Having been a professional photographer, my interest in Edward Curtis has always been keen, but this book is more than just another biography of yet another historic artist. You will be transported through a most ugly American era and it's treatment of the native americans. Edward Curtis endeavoured to bring light into this dark corner of history and was scarcely recognized for his incredible life's work. Read more

Inside the Secret World of Hershey and Mars - The Emperors of Chocolate
Inside the Secret World of Hershey and Mars - The Emperors of Chocolate

Review:The Emperors of Chocolate tells the story of how Milton Hershey and Forrest Mars battled for the stomachs of chocolate consumers all over the world. When i came into this book i was expecting to learn about the exciting minds of Milton Hershey, and Forrest Mars and how they rose to the top of this industry. After reading this book i learned more then i expected about the two multi-million dollar corporations. The author Joel Glenn Brenner does a great job of exploiting the differences between... Rogue Heroes – the Authorized Wartime History
Rogue Heroes – the Authorized Wartime History

Review:Excellent history of the SAS. In the age where focus is on US Delta force and Seals, it's very good to understand the global roots of Special Forces and what the men of SAS did to found this special military branch. Read more

Locomotive (Caldecott Medal Book)
Locomotive (Caldecott Medal Book)

Review:The pictures, history, and the workings of a train and the cars are very informative. The book allows for interpretation without reading the details to a three year old. The 7 year old and the five year old are mesmerized by the pictures of the old west, how the train makes steam to move the wheels, and all of the workers involved in running a train. Read more

Classic Stories of Gods - Heroes & Monsters
Classic Stories of Gods - Heroes & Monsters

Review:I bought this book for my granddaughters for Christmas. It has gorgeous illustrations and the stories are well written - not too long, but they get the main ideas across. I would highly recommend it. It's a real book to enjoy the old fashioned way - page by page, story by story. My 8 year old granddaughter has become an expert on Greek myths!! Great on a coffee table for the whole family to enjoy. Read more

The Greek Way
The Greek Way

Review:Curiously, the stories that are told are presented rather like Reuters news reports. Largely devoid of story telling "decoration". I guess that Ms Hamilton is trying to be true to the source, in some sort of scholarly way, but I was hoping for the deliciously rich storytelling that I remember my Latin master delivering to us 40 years ago in school. I'm still enjoying it, but can't help feeling that it could have been more. It's particularly odd that Hamilton often tells which of the ancient poet... Read more

None Dare Call It Conspiracy
None Dare Call It Conspiracy

Review:Very well written, very interesting, and well researched. What I didn't like is that in the Kindle edition there are charts, graphs, photos, etc. that should have been included right along with the text. As it turns out, while reading one must skip elsewhere in the book time after time. That becomes very annoying and breaks up any meaningful continuity of the read. (I chose not to take the time often). There are also too many misspelled words, incomplete sentences, and other errors. Better pro... Read more
