Committed: A Love Story
Committed: A Love Story

Review:I adore Eat, Pray, Love for a variety of reasons. This book however, is not Eat, Pray, Love. Thankfully, it doesn't pretend to be. My advice: don't read "Committed" if you are hoping to lose yourself in a compelling story, because you might get bored. Read it if you are interested in learning about marriage - what it is and what it is not, why it sometimes works and why it sometimes doesn't - and are prepared to examine your own assumptions about this beautiful yet fraught concept.

The True Story of the Final Combat Mission of World War II
The True Story of the Final Combat Mission of World War II

Review:I literally couldn't put this book down until I finished it! ...It's that good. Not only does it chronicle the events of Jerry Yellin's remarkable journey but Don Brown provides the reader with a fabulous synopsis of the events leading up to and through the War in Japan. It includes many eye-opening unsanitized truths about the brutality of war and in many cases the teenagers that fought in it. Winston Churchill said it best, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many t... Read more

and the Conquest of Everest - The Great War

Review:Very interesting and exhaustively researched treatise on the early exploration of Everest, with comprehensive coverage of the historical and political context. The only downside is that it can be pretty hard keeping mental track of all the players and their back stories. Read more

The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage - Blind Man's Bluff
The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage - Blind Man's Bluff

Review:The story of the Navy's achievements, both technical and operational, deserved better. Although I found some of the content highly interesting, both the information and the enjoyment were diminished by a number of shortcomings.

The stories of some of the actual intelligence operations and missions are incredibly interesting. They deserved better. Perhaps part of the problem is that the writers came from the NYT where they typically write stories about subjects where they have greater fami... Read more

City of Djinns
City of Djinns

Review:This book concerns the year Dalrymple spends in Delhi, attempting to uncover the secrets and hidden past of this once-great city. Dalrymple skillfully weaves the accounts of his daily life with the history of Delhi. One moment, you are reading about a harrowing taxi-cab ride, and the next page, an account of Shah Jehan's life begins. Few writers can change the pace so suddenly and get away with it, but Dalrymple is able to segue into and out of topics effortlessly.

The pacing and tone of ... Read more

John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam - A Bright Shining Lie
John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam - A Bright Shining Lie

Review:Very famous and justifiably so. Very distressing to read and reminds me of the turmoil and tragedy of Vietnam and how mistakenly our leaders misjudged the entire Vietnam issues. So sorry for the US military who were injured, killed and scarred for life and for the country citizens of Vietnam.
Should be a must read for all in the service academy and anyone involved in our foreign policy or defense policy . Read more

The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II - The Rape of Nanking
The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II - The Rape of Nanking

Review:This book is not by a professional historian, but by a non fiction "populizer". Due to her training, and she is a talented woman, Ms. Chang does a very good job with her writing, and a respectable job in creating a historical monograph. Some things could have been done better by a professional historian, such as putting the event in the context of military operations, but it is clear that Ms. Chang has an emotional investment in the subject. The actions by the Japanese were vicious and brutal, e... Read more
