Review:This book offers a very Machiavellian look at strategy, with an ethos of "the end justifies the means" and the attitude that anything anyone is ever trying to achieve is a war, and can benefit from the perspective of these "rules of war" - a very neutral, objective analysis of the strategies' effectiveness, without regard for their morality, hence an often disturbing book. Valuable perspectives, but one would have to be sociopathic to implement all these strategies. Read more
Review:The perfect combination of abstract thinking and 'roll-up-your-sleeves' ideas. I was able to immediately implement the suggestions in this book and have already seen results. A must read for anyone trying to create and improve products. Read more
Review:It was an interesting read but the authors' perception of libertarian paternalism stretches the definition of libertarian too far in my opinion. I did not find their policy targets to be especially interesting as subjects for discussion. They are far too timid. zZzzZZ What about choice architecture on my taxes? I would like to be able to opt out. But, this would not have made it through the editorial censors ("liberal" fascist ideology)
I was also annoyed with their incessant use of femin... Read more
Review:I bought this book in the last year of a 3 year unemployment stretch, I was lost. I wanted to change something. Guess what, I didn't read it. I recently got a great job, but in an industry unrelated to everything I've ever done. I love the job, but found myself lost, yet happy and learning as I go along. I finally read this on my way back from company meetings and it's elevated my level on the playing field to a way of thinking that not many people seem to utilize... lets just say "my eyes are o... Review:"Deep Work" is one of those frustrating books where you whole-heartedly agree with the premise (and it is a fantastic one), but the book falls off the rails when it comes to tactics and process.
Cal Newport is in academia and much of his advice comes from his own "deep work" journey--the process he embarked on to overcome professional setback and create high-quality output at an astounding rate. Unfortunately, much of the process feels well suited for a tenure-track professor but out of t... Read more
Review:I agree with all the author was saying about retirement. It's a time to reinvent yourself and pursue hobbies, or even new careers. The author proves that one does not need $500,00 in an IRA to retire. Ernie's book shows the way to enjoyment of life!!! Read more
Review:A lucid explanation of complex systems that's a must read if you want to understand how economic shocks of the past will be repeated and AMPLIFIED by many orders of magnitude in the future by: extremely entangled variables, instant communication, synthetic money, currency war, cyber attacks, and the elite's drive to stay in control. The resultant government actions will mean the end of our liberties as we know (and believe in) them today. However, there ARE things you can do to prepare... Read more
Review:I’m a huge fan of Michaels Hyatt’s work. I’m a free focus planner user, a BYE alumn for two consecutive years and a regular listener of his podcast. This book is like a compilation of the BYE course combined with the full focus planner metodology, a lot of the same examples and testimonials. I was expecting more new learning material and ideas. I you haven’t try the BYE course this is a great book for you. Read more
