Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life((inscribed By Author-Jon Kabat-Zinn))

Review:Recommend it whole heartedly. The prose is exquisite, yet accessible. There are passages here that are worth reading and re-reading time and time again. I will return to this book certainly some times in the future, for reference and to dwell into it deeper until some of these ideas hopefully become living habits of my life. Thank you to the author for this gift! Read more

Love Lost to the Long Goodbye of Alzheimer's - Jan's Story
Love Lost to the Long Goodbye of Alzheimer's - Jan's Story

Review:This is very well written. What I particularly like is that he did not eliminate details of just how this disease ravages relationships--including sex. His honesty is admirable.

I don't see how anyone could ever fault him for seeking a new companion--even though Jan is still alive. He has done everything he can and it is obvious that he still loves and respects the person she was--even though her personality has changed drastically. Read more

My Descent into Depression and How I Emerged with Hope
My Descent into Depression and How I Emerged with Hope

Review:Devoured this in one day. Lesson learned..If you aren't willing to feel it, you can't heal it. Repressed and stuffed emotions are killers. No one should live in their past, rather embrace, mourn and purge it through feeling, crying, forgiveness and making peace with yourself. I felt like I wanted to pick up the phone and chat with Naomi for hours after this read. For those who would say, "your past is in the past, nothing you can do about it...move on"..TRUE. But is you shove it under a rug... Read more

The Scientific Quest to Understand - and Empower the Mind
The Scientific Quest to Understand - and Empower the Mind

Review:Kind of interesting, but really just a bunch of disjointed, somewhat repetitious speculation about things that might or might not happen in the future. A somewhat more analytical (and a little bit more skeptical) approach would have been much more interesting, because it would have let the reader actually think about the likelihood of some of these things happening. Plus, the author seems hopelessly naive about the ability of our politics and government to control some of the rather frightenin... Read more

The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case
The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case

Review:According to the product description of SYBIL EXPOSED, "Nathan gives proof that the allegedly true story was largely fabricated."

Although Nathan did a good job of constructing a narrative of how and why she believes the book SYBIL came to be, neither the patient (Shirley Mason aka Sybil, the psychiatrist (Wilbur), nor the author (Schriebner) are alive to defend against Nathan's interpretations of their interactions and their motivations to produce the book.

On p. 396 (Kindle), Nat... Read more

Recognizing Faces and Feelings to Improve Communication and Emotional Life
Recognizing Faces and Feelings to Improve Communication and Emotional Life

Review:Fun book with interesting ways of recognizing micro expressions. There are tiny muscles in your face that display your thoughts and emotions long before you articulate them. It is amazing what we can learn if we look away from our handheld devices and make eye contact. Non-verbal communication at its best! What is NOT said in a conversation is the most important aspect of understanding the exchange. Read more

Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment
Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment

Review:This book is a reality check about happiness. It is extremely well written and it has concrete exercises for the reader to apply in everyday life. I learned so much, and the biggest lesson is that happiness doesn't just knock on your door and stay forever....we have to work hard at bringing happiness into our lives and keeping happiness around like a close friend who isn't with you every day, but is loyal throughout your lifetime. A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want - The How of Happiness
A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want - The How of Happiness

Review:Lyubomirsky is a die hard researcher who keeps quoting statistics and disgarding the travails of life faced by people with ongoing depression. She does have a chapter on the subject, but I didn't find it to be as thorough as the rest of the book. All rumination is self induced and at the root of all unhappiness, in her opinion. Although the questionnaires she provides are good for self introspection and soul searching, many of the twelve suggested activities one can choose from to "gain happine... Read more
