The Plains of Passage (with Bonus Content) - Earth's Children
The Plains of Passage (with Bonus Content) - Earth's Children

Review:Large blocks of this book are devoted entirely to landscape description and the movement of the animals that inhabited the land during this ice age story. Although an understanding of the territory and wildlife is necessary to round out the storyline, a little less information would have kept this reader from mistaking the fiction novel for a geography text book.

In addition, the length and elaborate step by step sex scenes are a turn off. Take the reader to the character's timing and m... Read more

The Shadow Land: A Novel
The Shadow Land: A Novel

Review:The Shadow Land is, first of all, a mystery wrapped in a troubled history. Young American girl inadvertently gets caught up in an expose of one of the worst periods in Bulgarian history, the gulags. Willing to suspend my disbelief about Bobby playing Holmes to her Watson, Bobby is an interesting character, but for me, their chance meeting is pushing the limits of disbelief. So is the dog they eventually befriend, who also has a history and part to play. The story of the Bulgarian work camps duri... Read more

The Garden of Evening Mists
The Garden of Evening Mists

Review:another wonderfully sad, quiet, thoughtful book. The characters are believable, the mystery remains for the reader to resolve in their own mind, and aging gracefully is an art that this book excels in describing. I encourage anyone past 30 to read it :) it is a slow steady read, like the mists that gradually cover many memories. Read more

The Space Between Us: A Novel
The Space Between Us: A Novel

Review:I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Such insight into the lives of two different families. The writing was wonderful and the characters were extremely well developed. I would recommend this book to anyone. Read more

A Heartless Design (Secrets of the Zodiac Book 1)
A Heartless Design (Secrets of the Zodiac Book 1)

Review:This has elements I really liked, in particular a woman who is an engineer and recognised the value in a second start. However I grew frustrated by such an intelligent woman's self doubt and inner dialogue. Read more

Walk on Earth a Stranger
Walk on Earth a Stranger

Review:About half way through Walk on Earth a Stranger, I realized I was having a hard time with the story. It is solidly written but I found I wasn't interested in the characters or even the story. For the most part, it was very contradictory (people did one thing one day - and then something completely different the next) and I began to feel like author Carson had researched a lot on the subject and then put in every anecdote or tidbit she could find. As such, it became a loosely assembled collection... Read more

The Heart's Invisible Furies
The Heart's Invisible Furies

Review:It is rare that you find yourself deliberately reading slowly because you want to savour every sentence, every phrase, every word in a novel, and because you don't want the experience to finish. Rich, layered characters, with subtle and complex themes, and an extremely clever plot. John Boyne is magnificent. Read more

Little Lord Fauntleroy (Puffin Classics)
Little Lord Fauntleroy (Puffin Classics)

Review:The company's service was good, but the book itself was full of printing errors. A large speech was absent at the end, and I caught that only because I'd looked it up; the ending made no sense without it. There was also computer code on the pages here and there in the middle of text. I definitely don't recommend this publisher's version of the book. Read more

Der Name der Rose: Roman (German Edition)
Der Name der Rose: Roman (German Edition)

Review:After reading many of the very insightful reviews this book already has, I will not try to add anything. Suffice it to say that I read The Name of the Rose years ago and my battered 1983 paperback still sits on my bookshelf. I read it again a few weeks ago on my Kindle and enjoyed it as much or more than the first time. A great book! Read more

Butterfly Island
Butterfly Island

Review:This is a beautifully written tale unlike any other I've read, which says a lot given I read 4-5 books a week. I found it quite absorbing, and found myself thinking about it when I was doing other things. I will read more by this author and look forward to and hope she continues to publish in the near future.
