The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral
The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral

Review:As a Southern church musician, reared by a grandmother born in the late 1800's the details of the customs, societal expectations, family eccentricities and community fixtures are "dead on." (pun intended) The friendly(?) competition between churches and individuals illustrates the status-consciousness of the matrons in towns and small cities. The recipes remind me of the comfort food of my youth. And no one has more characters than South.

If you are from the South, you'll recognize the peo... Read more

Black Is the New White
Black Is the New White

Review:Paul Mooney is one of my favorite comedians...so this book was a must read. I did not know what to expect, but I should have known that Paul Mooney would absolutely keep it real, keep it truthful and keep it funny. The man is awesome and the book reveals the layer below the surface. I have seen Mooney live before and witnessed his realness make a few audience members walk out. After reading the book, I now know why he does that. Not saying that I agree, but I do understand.

He discus... Read more

Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood
Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood

Review:This book contains a handfull of excellent fatherhood tips and warnings you must tale into account. And thats it. The rest is a collection of very well told stories about a father struggling to survive. Doesnt feel quite like a survival guide either though, and it couldve been. This book is centered around the particular stories that made parenhood difficult and amusing for the author, some of which may necer apply to you. At any rate, it was an ok, fast paced read. Here Comes Trouble: Stories From My Life
Here Comes Trouble: Stories From My Life

Review:A sort of autobiography by the inimitable Michael Moore, this book is a great read. Moore describes periods in his life that helped him to become the man of the people that he is today. Here Comes Trouble: Stories from My Life It grabbed my attention from the first page and I always had trouble putting it down. Highly recommended! Read more

Magical Thinking: True Stories
Magical Thinking: True Stories

Review:This is my second Burroughs book (after reading Running with Scissors). It is really funny. Each chapter is a stand alone story or anecdote, not necessarily related to the others. This made it such a quick read becuase each story goes so fast. This author has a great sense of humor and narrates the stories in a way that you feel like your friend is telling you them. He talks about his faults, dreams, relationships, and other aspects of his sometimes crazy life---all which make him very likable. ... Read more

This Is How: Surviving What You Think You Can't
This Is How: Surviving What You Think You Can't

Review:I was surprised. Still Augusten's usual sense of dark humor, but in the form of a self help book. It was actually categorized to be in the 'self-help' section. I found it to be uplifting and very insightful. Book itself was in good condition (used) and I was satisfied with the transaction. Read more

Possible Side Effects
Possible Side Effects

Review:I wouldn't say that this collection of essays was bad. As a matter of fact, there were some very funny moments, a few touching moments, and some moments that made me cringe.

I agree with some of the feedback that the plot lines are for the most part very thin. There are a few essays that I found quite tiresome, and I believe these were where the author was trying to stretch a quick actual occurence into a story.

Throughout the book, one definitely can see that the author has had ... Read more

The Mystery of Mercy Close (Walsh Family)
The Mystery of Mercy Close (Walsh Family)

Review:After learning a few months ago that Marian Keyes had battled depression, I totally got the fact that the subject played a major role in this book that I just finished. I absolutely love all of her books and especially the Walsh sisters series. Mercy Close is somewhat of a surprise, as the author does not specialize in mysteries, so keep that in mind if you find as I did, that you know fairly early-on the answer to the mystery. The whole mystery-thing is not the main point of the book. It pr... Read more
