I Am America (And So Can You!)
I Am America (And So Can You!)

Review:This book -- beautifully bound and, not a surprise, cleverly penned -- is not for everyone. Here's how I know. My 95-year old mother, a huge fan of THE COLBERT REPORT, mentioned wanting to buy this book. I told her to wait for a special occasion and that I'd buy it for her. The "special occasion" came soon after when she had successfully passed the written portion of the California driver's test (yes, you read that right, her driver's test at 95!), so, as promised, I ordered Colbert's book ... Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary

Review:I normally love David Sedaris and his sardonic, sarcastic writing voice, but this one was just a little too dark for me. I also love Ian Falconer's illustrations in my daughter's Olivia books, but something about seeing that talent put to a much more bloody and macabre use was a little unsettling. My least favorite DS book and not one I will keep. I don't need to - some of those illustrations are etched into the backs of my eyeballs forever, thank you very much. Read more

Ham: Slices of a Life: True Life Tales
Ham: Slices of a Life: True Life Tales

Review:I found myself in turns smiling, laughing and crying. Yes, it's a fun, witty story about celebrity and show biz. But there's more to this book than the plentiful humor. The stories the author tells reveal so much about his path towards self-awareness and acceptance, forgiveness, love and family. It's like eating chocolate that's actually good for you. Read more

Dave Barry on Parenting and Other Topics He Knows Very Little About

Review:While I agree with some of the other reviewers that some of this material is recycled from earlier books, I still laughed out loud several times. The chapter on "Fifty Shades of Gray" alone is worth the price of the book. Read more

Babbitt (Bantam Classics)
Babbitt (Bantam Classics)

Review:Classic satire of the American businessman and capitalist culture in general. As one earlier reviewer here states: "shockingly modern". I was drawn to this book after hearing Joseph Campbell quote Babbitt in the "Power of Myth" video series: "I've never done a single thing I've wanted to in my whole life!", Babbitt tells his son at the end of the novel. He's hoping that his son will be strong enough not to turn into him, and it's a quintessential moment because it's simultaneously sad and up... Read more

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: Vintage Movie Classics
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: Vintage Movie Classics

Review:I am writing this review to remind people there are better works of supernatural romance out there than Twilight. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is one such example. The novel was written in 1945 and then adapted into a film with George Sanders and later a TV series in the sixties.

The ghost and Mrs. Muir tells the story of a young widow, Lucy Muir who has decided she wants to break away from the control of her over-bearing and dominating in-laws. Already by this point the feminism and strength ... Read more

Review:I was little surprised that my book club picked this for our monthly choice, but it was a great break to the serious picks. The book is funny, raunchy and an easy read..I hope that she exaggerates a lot because some of the stories are insane. Read more

Review:Seriously lame - I thought this was a different book that had some really well thought out material - this is not it! One liners, and lots that are just there to fill the pages, sorry but find a better joke book. Read more
