Mason & Dixon
Mason & Dixon

Review:I loved it. The relationship between Mason & Dixon is one of those classic Captian Kirk/Mr. Spock or Aubery/Materin type mismatched friendships. There is a serious and profound underlying theme about the effects of slavery on the psyche of the slave owners. But most of all I just loved reading the blend of imaginary and real, the mix of slapstick and seriousness, the made-up language a la "Clockwork Orange". The whole concoction is amazing and wonderful. Read more

Zero K: A Novel
Zero K: A Novel

Review:I looked forward to how DeLillo would combine futurism with a character study and was disappointed. The science fiction is already yesterday's news (Ted Williams) and the characters are one dimensional, less than believable and even if believable, not very compelling. Read more

The Mystery of Mercy Close (Walsh Family)
The Mystery of Mercy Close (Walsh Family)

Review:After learning a few months ago that Marian Keyes had battled depression, I totally got the fact that the subject played a major role in this book that I just finished. I absolutely love all of her books and especially the Walsh sisters series. Mercy Close is somewhat of a surprise, as the author does not specialize in mysteries, so keep that in mind if you find as I did, that you know fairly early-on the answer to the mystery. The whole mystery-thing is not the main point of the book. It pr... Read more

The Brightest Star in the Sky
The Brightest Star in the Sky

Review:An unnamed spirit tells the story of The Brightest Star in the Sky, someone flying around over Dublin and checking out the inhabitants of 66 Star Street. This is a four story apartment house where seven people live. The spirit tells the backgrounds of everyone living there.

Matt and Maeve live on the first floor and appear to be possibly the most in love couple ever. Jemima is a lady in her 80's who works on a psychic phone line. She lives with her dog Grudge who adds his own thoughts to ... Read more

A Hay Festival and The Poole VOTE 100 BOOKS for Women Selection (Walsh Family)

Review:Great insight into the psych of people with addictions. Makes one realise that it is so easy to slip into a similar state of mind, how to get above it all was very entertaining. Crisply written with clear message wrapped in comfortable humour. Read more

Last Chance Saloon
Last Chance Saloon

Review:I am fastly becoming a HUGE Marian Keyes lover. I started out with "Watermelon" and found it ok, but since then, I have craved more and more of her work. I have gone back over all of her work and find more and more brillance each time. And, with "Last Chance Saloon", I am blissfully happy. I love this book! I mean, LOVE it. I found the character so easy to read. I completely enjoyed Tara and her rough road of love and life. I was enchanted by her personality and heart. I think that Maria... Read more

Modern Lovers
Modern Lovers

Review:Read the vacationers and thought it was okay, maybe more of a library rental. When I saw the description of this book, mainly revisiting the death of a college band singer who later becomes famous, I thought meh. Turns out I clicked buy by mistake and it was quite a happy mistake. This book has very little to do with the college bang, or the singer's death, but is a realistic but beautifully pictured examination of growing old and looking back, juxtaposed with a younger generation coming of age... Sutphin Boulevard
Sutphin Boulevard

Review:Before I started this book I knew I should expect dark and gritty. I knew I should expect roller coaster feelings. I knew I should expect out of this world hot sex scenes... I got all of this. What I did not expect was to be hit so hard by this story.

Have you ever read a book and found a character and said... Oh, hell! I've been there. I've seen this. I've felt that. I've thought that exact same thing... And then realize how difficult, and how painful is to find yourself in that characte... Read more

The Princess (The Montgomery/Taggert Family Book 8)
The Princess (The Montgomery/Taggert Family Book 8)

Review:I picked up The Princess spur of the moment earlier this year, when the library was discarding a lot of the older books for mere pennies. I had heard of the author before and I thought 'What the heck, I'll give her a try'. The worst that could happen would be I hated it, and there went a day or reading and 25 cents, right? But on the other hand, I could end up loving it, and then I have not only a new book to add to my favorite's list, but also a whole new author to check out. Not bad outcomes, ... Read more
