This book is available in our public library - they have many copies, and they are all worn and dog-eared. Its the best book on the subject, so its worth buying your own copy. The illustrations are accurate enough to cause a little giggling among older children, but not graphic enough to be gross or icky. I wish it came in the cardboard book form.

Bought this book while trying to train my son Joshua. The character in the book is Joshua, too, so I thought my son would like it...
After reading several times, I couldn't help by notice it is very much like "the potty book" that I bought a year ago! Although this book is much older, it seems someone else thought it was good enough to copy!
My son does like it, but not enough to go potty on the toilet full time!!!

This book helps to get the message across to your child. There's one for little boys, and there's one for little girl's, and I don't know what I would have don't without them. They made potty training easy.

We ordered this with the video. I was skeptical, but it proved to be an excellent choice. Not only did our son ask us to read it over and over (and show the video over and over), it seemed to provide him with a peer: Joshua. Learning to use a toilet seems pretty confusing for a kid, and its not so easy to remain positive about it as an adult. That is what makes this very upbeat book so valuable.

Ummm. Potties don't look like ceramic old-fashioned chamber pots any more.
My three year old likes the story and the video, but it seems to be a waste of time in helping his toilet training. You might as well read Dr. Seuss and avoid having to read phrases like "poo-poo" and "pee-pee" and "the little hole in his bottom where the poo poo comes out".
I know I am attacking a classic, well-beloved book, and I don't have a better book to offer, but this out of date book does not charm me or help my kid.
You'd be better off simply lovingly bringing your kid to the potty every waking hour than straining through this embarrassingly wretched book.

Bought for my 2yo just starting potty training. I don't like the rhythm of the read and the "I, Joshua's Mother..." gets old FAST. Son basically just points to the stars and flowers and the page and doesn't stay engaged. Disappointed as it is a "classic". Read him pretty much anything else in his library while we wait.

my little grandson enjoyed the art work and the narrative in this book. while not new, I consider it a classic and would happily recommend it to anyone in the process of teaching a young child about using the potty him/herself.

While my son enjoys reading this book, it confuses him a little that, what looks like a watering can or pitcher is a potty. We use different terms then the book uses and the author addresses that point by just having us substitute the expressions we use. While my son will ask to read this book, I don't think it is making any impact on this potty training.

Great book, clear information and very thorough. Illustrations are old fashioned but I don't feel like it takes away from the message. Good length for a preschooler, maybe a bit long for a 2 year old.
