Life is always uncertain, and it was especially true for women during the medieval period. The heroine in the latest Highland Guard story knows what it is like to go through a traumatic time, and it greatly affects how she reacts following the distressing event. As a noble, love was not as important as duty when it came to marriages, and following the heart could have a lasting effect on how a person was treated in the coming years. But frequently, what a person should do battles with the wishes that one wants to make come true, and ultimately some very tough choices must be made. Monica McCarty definitely takes her romantic couple on a journey where emotional conflicts often feel just as challenging as the physical clashes Scotland is waging against England. THE ROCK is historical romantic fiction at its most compelling.

When Thomas MacGowan was told Elizabeth Douglas was too far above him to ever interact with her, he could not keep from hoping to one day actually talk with the daughter of his clan’s laird. A chance meeting gives the two youngsters the opportunity to have a private conversation, and they eventually become best friends despite him only being the son of a blacksmith. After many years, the dream that Thom has of them being in a relationship is dashed by her uncaring comments when he states his feelings for her. With it evident the future he envisioned is never going to happen, he decides to become a soldier fighting with Robert the Bruce. With any luck, Thom will forget about the life he and Elizabeth could have had together.

After the hurtful way in which they parted, he never again wanted to be around the woman to whom he proclaimed his love. But when her half-brother is taken by the English and imprisoned, there is only one individual Elizabeth knows who can rescue the young man. She remembers how easily Thom used his ability to climb in assisting her in the past, and she hopes he will once again come to her aid. When he hears her pleading request, he wants to refuse yet it is still most difficult to deny her anything.

The vast number of actual historical skirmishes in the Highland Guard stories always makes the fictional scenes seem like they really took place as depicted. Those in THE ROCK involving Thom are especially riveting, as danger is ever present during his difficult climbs. The way in which Monica McCarty blends actual history with her vividly inventive scenes is nothing short of ingenious, making each moment come across as very realistic. Times were turbulent for people who lived in the 1300’s in Scotland, and the author knowledgeably shows how political disagreements could turn violent.

It was absolutely wonderful getting to reconnect with so many of the Highland Guard warriors featured in THE ROCK. Though Thom is not one of these elite men, he certainly possesses the necessary skills to belong to the group and repeatedly proves he is ready for whatever is demanded of him. While much in his life is improving, the romantic aspects are anything but good. He adores Elizabeth and even declares his deepest feelings, but fears concerning her future have her rejecting his love. My own heart broke for Thom during the scenes where he felt so unwanted, and although I understood her reasoning, it was still painful to watch. The issues they have to overcome of social differences were definitely a problem during this time period, and the author makes every obstacle seem genuine. Though this is the eleventh book in the Highland Guard series, I never tire of learning about the new escapades of these commanding men. THE ROCK has imaginative adventures and emotional romantic interludes.

Again Monica McCarty pens another spectacular brilliant read in book eleven of her phenomenal best selling "A Highland Guard Novel" series that I have absolutely loved each and everyone including this one titled "The Rock". Monica McCarty is one of the most talented writers in the entire Scottish historical romance fiction genre in my opinion. I can't get enough of her riveting, fast paced page turners that blend true factional history and her own fictional adventure about Robert Bruce bid and holding on to his crown in which he cannot do alone. As he has help as now the English are coming and Bruce plans to be ready for them with his special secret elite and powerful fierce warriors called the Highland Guard. The hero of the story who some will know as "Rock" eventually and of very humble birth will be essential and play a very key part for Bruce to soon to attain his goal moving toward the most significant battle in the near future.

The story begins in at Douglas Castle, Lanarkshire Scotland in June of 1296 and ends during the Scottish Marches era in 1314. . In 1296 this is when Thomas MacGowan known as wee Thom for when he is a lad and the son of the blacksmith and his father was the personal smith and armorer of Lord William Douglas. This is how he first meets Lady Elizabeth Douglas his wee daughter who to him looks more like a princess and this is how he first the child who would become the heart of his desire most of his life as he is only nine and she was six years old at the time. Lady Elizabeth Douglas that those close to her call Ella or El, is the heroine of this story. Then the day Ella comforts Thom after his mum dies giving birth to his little brother Johnny. It turns out she too lost her mum when she was born for the same reason and from that day and on they become the best of friends not realizing about class difference he the Smitty's son and she the Laird's daughter. Then he also became the best of friends with her brother Jamie and his friend Joanna who was more of the sister he never had. This book circles a lot on the four of them how the class and social difference affects all four of them as they become adults.

Thom has been in love with Elizabeth ( Ella) since the first time her and has had her on an unrealistic pedestal since they met as children. Also how Ella's brother Jamie and Thom, who had been the best of friends become bitter enemies, but you will have to read this story to find out the details to the why and when. Jamie now Laird Douglas, also plays an important key part in King Robert Bruces's war and and reaches hero status as well not that this changes Thom's opinion of Jamie no matter how high he climbed! Thom opens his heart to Ella and when Thom saves her from a mishap on a tree as a child Ella claims she will marry him one day! Sadly, when he is twenty and three and she twenty-one he opens his heart and assumes they really will marry one day, yet Ella only sees's their class difference and has only seen Thom as her very dear best friend. Plus the fact Ella has a fear of starving and not having a roof over her heard due to a dark time in her families past which again you will have to read this marvelous story to find out why. This rejection and heartbreak prompts Thom to join Edward Bruce's army to and raise his status to become a man-at-arms.

It's been three years and now Thom is considering marrying a titled and wealthy widow who has taken a shine to him. Ella is considering a betrothal to the handsome nephew, of Robert the Bruce and one of the richest men in the realm. Then Ella's teenage brother Archie is taken prisoner by the English! The only man that will be able to save him and able to climb that high rock of his prison is Thom, with his special cliff and rock climbing abilities. This also does not go unnoticed by King Robert Bruce and his elite warriors, the Highland Guards. Son of a smith or not Ella finally opens her eyes and realizes the most handsome and honorable man in Scotland has always been there right in front of her, but is it too late with her betrothal about to be announced? Will she break Thom's heart once again? Will she choose social status and all that comes with it or take a chance on love? You will have to read this beautifully written exquisite, fast paced riveting adventure, lined with factual history, betrayal, jealousy, heartbreak, prejudice of classes, suspense, drama, honor, sizzling passion and love and more to find out.

This book just dazzled me and honestly just took my breath away. I can't recommend it enough as its a story you won't be able to put down, that will pull at your heartstrings and you won't forget as it will stay with you long after you have read it. Sadly, only one more book in "A Highland Guard Novel" series! The next called The Ghost is book 12 TBR 5/31/2016. This is the last and final story in this exceptional, beautifully written, heart-melting series. A series that I plan to reread again and again. As each and every Highland Guard Novel has been a reading heaven for me, all memorable and such a joy and privilege to read, I can't thank Ms. McCarty enough!

Absolutely and unequivocally loved "The Rock" by Monica McCarty which was another absolute masterpiece in my opinion!

I was so excited to read the latest Highland Guard book. It's background as you probably know is about Robert the Bruce and his battles against the English. He has picked the men who are known for their talents in warfare. The highlanders are a special force who are loyal to one another and always have each others back. It's so nice to read about those men and how they met their soul mates.
When I read the prologue, it was so special to see a little girl befriend a boy not of her class. She was a darling and her name is Elizabeth Douglas. She wore a pink dress and ribbons in her hair when the boy saw her thought her a "Princess". It's funny to see how children relate to one another. The boy's name is Thomas MacGowan and his father is the blacksmith to powerful Lord of Douglas.
Thom's father tells him not to hope for anything more because the girl is not of his class.
They continue their friendship, with Thom always around to help Elizabeth in her many escapades. As they grow up, Thom's feelings and love for his "Princess" seem to shatter when she doesn't return the same. Elizabeth is stunned by this admission, and is somewhat taken aback. How can her most trusted confidant tell her this when she's been raised in a higher station then him.
I can see her point, since her brother James is now Lord of Douglas, and wants her to marry someone in her class. James knows that Thom isn't the right man for her.
All Thom knows is that he can do better in life and sees himself becoming more that to which he was born. He gets the chance to belong to the Highland Guard, but will it make a difference to Elizabeth's view of him?
There is a lot more going on in this book, so you will have to read and find out if these two will have their "happy ever after".
I appreciate Net Galley and Pocket Books for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.

Thomas MacGowan has loved Elizabeth Douglas since the first time he saw her. She was a little girl then and he thought she was a princess. His father tells Thomas she is unreachable. She is a lady and he is only the son of the blacksmith. He has nothing to offer her but they become fast friends with Thomas saving her a few times. Yeas later, when Elizabeth refuses his proposal, he's devastated and decides to join Edward Bruce's cause against the English. He wants to show Elizabeth he can do better and climb the ranks to achieve a better status. Thomas is strong and he's known to be able to climb the most difficult walls. This brings the interest from the Highland Guard to his doorstep. He might be able to climb the walls of castles and take them back from the English. Nonetheless, this is not enough to make Elizabeth stop her bethrodal.

I was so happy to start The Rock. I read The Striker and I loved it. Monica McCarty does a great job with her descriptions and I can almost visualize myself during those hard times. I wish I had read the rest of the books but I don't believe it's necessary to enjoy it.

In regards to the main characrters, I found myself annoyed with Elizabeth at times. She had a man promising to love her and cheerish her and she was oblivious to his love until she sees him without a shirt! Then lust takes over and then she realizes her mistake. I know it was unheard of marrying below your status but how can she say no to Thomas!

Thomas was written perfectly. He was strong, determined and would do anything to convince Elizabeth that he could provide for her. Everything he did was for her. How many times did he save her? I was happy Thomas was able to develop a relationship with his father and brother again.

I really can't wait for the next one in this series.

Cliffhanger: No

I enjoyed The Rock by Monica McCarty. Maybe it is not my favorite of her stories but it is still a story well executed with an intriguing social time period struggle. I had mixed feelings about the characters which has affected how I feel about the novel overall.

Reading the author’s note at the end helped to put this story into the proper time perspective. I wish I had read it earlier but it is longer than most author’s notes so possibly most would skip it at the beginning to get to the story itself.

Elizabeth was a confusing character. Usually I like characters who go against social restrictions and change their own destiny as well as paving the way for future generations. Elizabeth may have done that in the end but she seemed content to go with the rules in place by society much of the time. I really liked Thom, a man who had risen above the expectations of others to become a man of honor and integrity. Several times I was thinking he should walk away, there is bound to be someone who would appreciate him elsewhere. Then many of the supporting characters especially some in Elizabeth’s family were not so likeable.

Ms. McCarty had a daunting task to help readers of the twenty first century understand and empathize with those under the strict customs in the late thirteenth century. For that I thank her.

Thom MacGowan and Elizabeth Douglas became friends as young children. What made it unusual was the difference in their status: she's the daughter of the Lord of Douglas and he's the son of the Castle's blacksmith. When Thom becomes of age and his feelings transform to something deeper, Elizabeth doesn't see things the same way and his friendship with her brother, James (The Black) Douglas fractures. Thom decides to pursue his dream of becoming a Knight, creating a path for his worthiness to ask for Elizabeth's hand.

You may remember Thom and James from The Knight where their animosity was pretty clear. I didn't like James then and it didn't get any better here. Thom continued to be so admirable, steadfast in his goals and love for Elizabeth, despite her lack of worthiness for him. If you can't tell, I wasn't a fan of Elizabeth's either.

It is historically accurate that people of different stations rarely married and that is just a fact. However, I thought Elizabeth lacked empathy for a man she'd adored as a child. And, James was just hypocritical given his marriage to Jo, a woman in a similar status as Thom.

I liked the story primarily due to my affection for Thom and his extraordinary skills. There was very little Highland Guard action here so everything fell to the romance, which came up short for me. One other wonderful highlight was the narration by Antony Ferguson. He made an average story a really good listening experience on every level. 3.5 stars

As kids, Thom was the castle blacksmith's son and Elizabeth was the young lady of said castle. Even though it was unheard of for people of their class to become friends, but as children they never saw anything wrong with it. However, as they grew older Thom's feeling for Elizabeth grew into love and pretty soon he found himself being put in his place. In order to get over Elizabeth's rejection of him, he enlists in Bruce's army in the hopes of becoming a knight and being granted lands of his own. However, a few years later he runs into the very woman who sent him away, Elizabeth. She's no longer the teen he left behind, and he's no longer the boy who left home to join the army.

I have really enjoyed the Highland Guard series so far. The author is very talented and the series is really well written. I always find myself taken back in time with these books. I feel like I'm right there with them fighting. However, The Rock was not one of my favorite stories and the reason for it was Elizabeth. I really disliked her from the start. She's this flighty girl who doesn't realize the pain she causes other people. She continues to drag Thom along, refuses to marry him because in doing so she would be lowering herself to his caste and that's just unacceptable, but when he tries to move on she cries over the injustice of him not being hers. WHAT?! The entire time she seeks him out, pushes the boundaries, and then rejects him because he is beneath her. This went on for the entire book. I mean, she's betrothed to another but because she saw Thom walk off with the lady he intends to marry, she gets all hurt and upset and tries to seduce him. I just did not care for her character at all. I felt like Thom was so better off without her. I really wish this book ended differently.

One thing that I love about these books is that you can read them out of order. You could even read them as a stand-alone if you want. The author catches you up on what's going in in the prologue before jumping into the story. Plus, every book concentrates on a different character. However, every book is always going to have the men of the Highland Guard in it and thus will have a lot of references to previous books. I have not read the novella that dealt with Elizabeth's brother, Jamie. I'm pretty sure I'm glad I didn't because he character was just as bad as Elizabeth's. I can only imagine how irritating he was in his own book. So, while I did feel like I was missing something when they kept bringing up something with him and his wife, it didn't ruin the story for me.

The Rock--like all of the Highland Guard books-- is a really well written historical romance. Each book focuses on someone different so every book seems different and new. If it wasn't for Elizabeth I probably would have enjoyed this story a whole lot more. Unfortunately, she kind of ruined the experience of the book for me. Regardless, this is an enjoyable series that I will continue reading. Up next is Ghost's story (the only female in the group that we have yet to meet) and I can not wait to read it.

Monica McCarty never fails in the Highland Romance Department. Just when I thought "The Saint" was my favorite, here came "The Rock." What a beautiful story about childhood love between the different ranks of the social class, Robert the Brus close to winning the war against England to take over the Scottish throne, and our rough, tough, gruff and often comical band of Highland Guard heroes!

Our leading lady Elizabeth Douglas did come across a bit immature at times, but her noble status did call for her to think about the future of her family, especially since they were destitute at one point. Our hero is just perfect in every way- Thommy MacGowan knew he was madly in love with Elizabeth when they reached their teens and was constantly being reminded to stop aiming so high, as nobles do not marry the lowly class- and he being the blacksmith's son is about the lowest level of the echelon. Elizabeth struggles throughout the entire book to come to terms with her feelings for her Thommy, and although a little bit trite at times, the author does a good job explaining why in her section of the "Author's Notes." I LOVE this section because we get a mini history lesson, how the author ran with her scenarios in the story given certain pieces of information etched within history and why certain characters behaved a certain way- namely Elizabeth Douglas in this story.

I truly enjoyed having a rock climber in the Highland Guard- just when I thought there couldn't be any more newcomers to this fun and sexy group, here comes Thommy MacGowan!-- what a sexy, passionate and true to his convictions character. He NEVER falters and sticks to his guns from beginning to end. I truly enjoyed having all the Guard members come back, especially Helen and Magnus from the Saint. Although this story is a bit similar to The Saint, the story held out on its own and the dilemma was from the female perspective. I hope we get to have a story about the king's gallant nephew Thomas and Lady Isabelle and am totally looking forward to the next installment within this series- The Striker.

The Rock by Monica McCarty is a 2015 Ballantine publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher as an XOXpert, the official street team of XOXO After Dark.

This eleventh installment in the Highland Guard series starts off like a sweet fairy tale when Thomas McGowan becomes friends with Jamie and Elizabeth Douglas as children. Although Elizabeth was only six years old, she proclaimed that one day she was going to marry Thom. But, as they grew up, Thom’s feelings toward Elizabeth became clear to her brother. The two men argued and Elizabeth was sent away.

Why? Well, Thom is the son of a blacksmith and Elizabeth is a princess. The class distinctions were too great to overcome. But, Thom always believed in Elizabeth, always knew she would return and they would have their happily ever after.

Well, Elizabeth does return, but his plans and hers couldn’t be more different. Bitter, and angry, Thomas sets out to become a Knight and better himself. His goal is to show Elizabeth he is worthy of her. But, is she worthy of him?

The Highland Guard series is one the very best Historical Highlander series in my opinion. As I have stated countless times, the attention to detail is next to none. It's as historically accurate as is possible, is well written and researched. I have yet to read a book from this series that didn’t wow me.

But, I have to confess, I struggled with this one quite a bit. Elizabeth is the most obtuse protagonist I’ve encountered in a long while. I do understand the girl knew her lot in life and can even see how it was possible she never thought of Thom in a romantic way. She even admitted she was not the romantic type, and of course, she knew all along a marriage with him was impossible, so she never entertained such notions.

But, surely she knew he was in love with her! I know young women in those days were sheltered and naïve, but I felt she toyed with his feelings, led him on, and used him. Why else would Thom be so very positive she returned his feelings?

After Elizabeth stomps all over Thom’s heart, in almost the same breath, she actually has the nerve to ask if they can go back to being the best of friends, like they were before, as though people can turn their feelings on and off like a light switch. That’s the type of thing that made it hard to warm up to her. I was outraged by her insensitivity to Thom’s feelings.

Thom on the other hand is a romantic, but maybe he was deluding himself a little too, and was partly responsible, by setting himself up for a fall. He was aware she was a princess and to believe that when push came to shove she would disobey her brother, shirk her duty as a princess, and risk poverty to marry for love, was just asking for heartbreak. Yes, it sounds romantic, but logically, it seemed impossible. Still, of the two, I admired Thom the most. The man has principles, believes in himself, in love, in right and wrong, and well, if I had been Elizabeth, and found out Thom loved me, I would go weak in the knees, and I think being poor with Thom would be a much better fate that being rich, a trophy, and never knowing real love or passion. But, that’s just me and of course times were very, very different in medieval Scotland.

So, this couple puts us on an emotional roller coaster. Elizabeth puts Thom through the ringer, constantly drawing him into her snare, then pulling back, then begging to be forgiven, making Thom love her, then hate her.

So, does Elizabeth ever redeem herself and prove she is worthy of Thom? Well, for Thom’s sake, I will give her the benefit of the doubt. She does finally wake up and the course she takes is indeed very risky and could come at a very high cost to her, and is all done in the name of love.

I have to be completely honest and say this was not my favorite book in the series, and it did take me a long time to warm up to Elizabeth, and even then it was grudgingly, but the writing and historical details are top notch as always, and I was engaged in the story, and although Thom is kind of the new kid on the block, he saved the day, and the story for me. I really liked him and am happy I got to meet him and was happy he got his happily ever after.

These just get better and better!
I swear each time I finish a book in in the series I am sure it's my absolute favorite, then I read the next and feel the same. I was so looking forward to reading Thom story. I can't believe McCarty managed to exceed my expectation - AGAIN.
Well, this one definitely is my favorite in the series...
.. for now
;)

Funny enough I read this right With Every Breath- and I would have told you before I started this, the two books could not be more different. One is a new adult set in Patagonia and this is a historical set in Scotland. But there are many parallels between the two books and why I liked them. First both heroes- are broody, melancholic dudes- ripped and super hot... Both are from the Highlands and both are mountaineers.
Why am I mentioning this?
Weeeeelllll... I think I got a new favorite genre: Scottish mountaineer hottie romances
I really think it's a thing. Seriously, it defo beats the usual highlander romps. Any day.
But seriously, both books are set in mountains. Both heros love them and both of them a climbers. And both authors get the setting and the whole environment, the feelings, the quiet and the majesty of the mountains just right. Both books have beautiful descriptions, made my heart ache and leap, are well written and clearly extremely well researched. While Riley chose a setting that is on my bucket list, McCarty's setting is well known to me.
I lived in Scotland for a while. I even did some of the climbs she describes. And let me tell you, it was like revisiting them.
In fact this made me wonder once again how much time McCarty has spent in the Highlands.

Her descriptions are gorgeous and so accurate, it's like I was there again. I can not stress how awe inspiring that is for me. McCarty clearly is a master of her craft.
I fell in love with this series, because of her beautiful prose. So there is no surprise there. But each and every book manages to surprise me, with it's beautiful descriptions of Scotland, the clever weaving of the fictional with the historical and the great character building.

The Rock wowed me even more. First the mountain-climbing aspects were awesome. But more than that- this book is set between different events and between previous books. If you read the other books of the series, you know about the two MCs already.Elizabeth and Thom both make appearances in other books. Thom more so than Elizabeth, and I was super excited to read about Thom's story. Since he featured in the last two books- and I took an instant liking to him. So I had quite high expectations of this one. Possibly higher than usual... Still McCarty managed to surprise me and exceed my expectations. The historical aspects of the series are getting better and better in my opinion. McCarty interweaves the historical with the fiction in such a clever way it feel extremely real. Her stories though fictions seem possible. I find myself wishing they were true- which in itself surprises me, because we all know I am way too unromantic for something like that. But McCarty manages to bring the romantic out even in me.

While the setting is historically driven- and again extremely well done- the story line to a degree is driven by those historical events. On top of that McCarty adds her romance story. This one, like all the others is in some ways your usual romance. But McCarty does give it her own twist each time. And romance in The Rock is about trying to breach different social standing. To be honest, I don't actually think that Thom and Elizabeth would have had much of a chance in the real world, simply because their relationship would have been a total faux-pas. But McCarthy does kinda make me believe it would have been possible. Well, she makes me hope so at least. See? She brings out the romantic in me!

The character building is just like always, really well done. I didn't like Elizabeth much for most of the book- but I did get where she was coming from.
Thom on the other hand-- gosh, I don't think I liked any of McCarthy's heros better than him. And let's just make that clear, I love them all! But Thom. SIGH. As I said before I seem to have something for melancholic, broody, stubborn, honourable, mountaineering Highlanders.
Just like in the previous books, I loved to get glimpses of the rest of the crew. McCarthy is brilliant at showing a different side to the characters when seen from a different POV. Each book makes me wonder how the Bruce really was, I like to believe, he was like McCarthy describes him. In fact I feel like someone, who was there, told me about that time and those people. That's how flawless her character building is.

So officially my favorite book by McCarthy and An absolute must read!

If you like back and forth relationship angst, The Rock by Monica McCarty is definitely for you. Thom might be called Rock due to his unique climbing skills, but I’m starting to wonder if a better reason is he can be as dense one. Maybe it’s because he can be so frustrating you feel like hitting him upside the head with one. He seems quick to be offended/enraged, holds onto anger, and his actions and words at times are mean-spirited and hurtful towards the heroine. However, at other times he is all about trying to convince Ella to be with him and tries to assure her love will conquer all. For someone so physically strong, his character came off as emotionally insecure at times. It was almost like he had Cupid sitting on one shoulder whispering words of hope and encouraging him to pursue true love and a devil on the other doing the opposite.

Thom has been madly in love with Ella since she was a teenager. Unfortunately, her older brother realized it, too, and sent her to Paris to keep them apart. The conflict happening in the area just gave him a good excuse to do so. Three years later when she returns, Thom confesses his love only to find Ella isn’t quite there yet. Our heroine might be beautiful and quick to act impulsively, but she is still too young/innocent/naïve to know what love is. By the time she realizes she does have romantic feelings for Thom, he has hardened his heart towards her. Throw in Scotland’s medieval caste system, which would never approve of a blacksmith’s son marrying a noble, a likely pending arranged betrothal with the King’s nephew, and a profitable marriage prospect for Thom, and it appears Thom will never get to slip a rock on the hand of this bonny Scottish lass.

Now our handsome hero is not the only one with faults. Ella’s actions are just as indecisive/annoying at times. She has strong feelings for Thom but is easily talked into an engagement with another man. Why? Because she doesn’t want to experience shame and poverty ever again. So much for love conquers all, my fellow romance book-loving friends. However, at the drop of a blacksmith’s hammer (pardon the pun…I simply couldn’t resist), she is always running back to Thom for one reason or another…wants his advice, tries to talk him in or out of something, etc. This even after the many times he tells her to stay away. I must admit I prefer a much stronger heroine who has more sense and self-respect. It seemed she was the one more often than not doing the groveling.

When Thom’s pursuit of knighthood gets a major boost after a heroic deed, the cards on the table shift. They eventually get their HEA after one of them does something completely out of character and, frankly, I felt more than a little embarrassed for them. Once again self-respect was nowhere to be found. But, hey, at least it worked.

As an avid fan of this series, I simply can’t say no to reading each sequel. Though frustrated, I still am glad I read this one. With Book 1, The Chief, my all-time favorite Scottish historical read ever, I am really looking forward to The Ghost, Book 12, the last of The Highland Guard saga.

Do yourself a favor and read more books by this author, as well. She is a favorite of this NetGalley reviewer.

Title: The Rock, Series: Highland Guard (Book # 11), Pages: 432, Author: Monica McCarty, stand-alone, HEA, lots of relationship angst, a few very steamy scenes, not a couple until the very end, great cast of sub characters.

The Rock by Monica McCarty
Historical Romance -Dec 29th, 2015
5 stars

Thomas MacGowan and Lady Elizabeth Douglas have known each other from childhood. And Thomas has loved her ever since. But to Elizabeth, Thomas has always been a good friend -a steady presence and source of reassurance. They bonded over the early years filled with hunger and strife. Now that Elizabeth's brother has risen to power he wants to assure his power and wealth by marrying Elizabeth to an influential man. Her new fiancee-to-be is handsome, kind, and rich. All things any woman would love. But she can't stop thinking about Thomas even though their stations are quite different. For Thomas is a mere blacksmith. And though he works with her brother towards Scottish freedom he has no riches -only himself to commend. Elizabeth must choose. Her heart or her head. But when it looks like Elizabeth might loose Thomas forever it may be the catalyst to open her eyes to what she really needs.

This was a passionate, even epic Scottish romance. I could envision this book being made into a movie. Elizabeth is a kind young woman that is caught between her bother's desires, her need for security and the deep love she is only just discovering for her childhood friend. Thomas wears his heart on his sleeve. He believes, even against impossible odds that Elizabeth will renounce her wealthy groom-to-be and choose a life with him. But filled with uncertainty and hardship. Thomas is the fierce warrior and romantic. While he is nothing if not honorable he does kiss Elizabeth to prove how they are meant to be together. (Very hot!) Thomas has had to work hard to prove himself due to his poorer upbringing and has taken life threatening missions in the Scottish name to show his loyalty. He is the hero readers will love.

This book has it all. The fight for Scottish independence, larger than life characters and a sweeping and even dramatic romance that boils with passion. As Elizabeth must choose between duty and love, I felt such an emotional roller coaster of pure delight!

Well this the latest addition to Ms McCartys Highland Guard series took me on a journey that at times had me not really liking the two lead characters. I will go further and say there is a supporting character who really should know better too after he nearly royally messed up his own life ! Alas no these far too stubborn Scots just keep hurting each other and you know what? Sometimes ostriches and the act of burying their heads in the sand was the thought that dominated my thoughts!
Thom is the most caring and noble male I think this author has ever written and trust me that is saying an awful lot! He may be low born but has aspirations and ambition that truly rival that of the most noble in the land. He has always loved the Lairds daughter Elizabeth but she just never saw him as he really is. Well that's not quite true as Thom is her best friend, most faithful ally and fervent confident but life and war pulls the young friends apart.
Fast forward a few years and Thom is making a name for himself in Bruce's army, determined to become a knight. Thom is so close to fulfilling his ambitions in spite of prejudice when who should return to his life but the one lassie with the power to send him to his knees. Elizabeth remembers all of Thoms strengths and his remarkable climbing skills could help save someone she loves but wil he want to help without incentive? Plus what will he do when he learns that not only does Elizabeth not see him as a suitor but she just might see someone else as far more worthy!
Elizabeth was so blinkered that I really wanted to shake her at times. I do understand that this is written about a time when class and alliances meant everything. Yes Elizabeth has a duty to her clan but she felt weak and materialistic at times. Afraid of poverty and yet unafraid to face anything else, yes a completely bewildering character. Thom from the start realises and accepts his feelings but as the story unfolds he doesn't half let her feel cornered and trapped by her station. One minute Thom loves Eluzabeth and then the next he raises barriers that push her far far away . Such burning passion between them ( sorry no way could I describe it as simmering! ) and yet the author doesn't rush the couple but let's them make mistakes until their choices finally catch up with them.
It was fun seeing this side of the Douglas clan and just how they fit around the Hghland Guard. Of course Thom impresses with his natural abilities and seeing him come into his own was a heartwarming journey. A surprising turn from Bruce's nephew who really has hidden depths but sorry I can say no more about his role! Fans of history will enjoy the unique spin this author puts on it but those seeking a story rife with romance and adventure will not be disappointed either. I've really enjoyed this series and can't wait to see what happens next

As a long-time Monica McCarty fan, I am reluctant to give a review that is less than stellar. The issue is not her writing; the problem I have is with the story itself. As others have already given very detailed summaries of the book, I won't provide one, but just give my impressions of the story and characters.

I loved Thom. He was honest, honorable, and perhaps a little idealistic as it was unheard of to marry so far above your station: he, the son of a blacksmith, and Elizabeth (Ella), the daughter of a noble. When he was rejected by Ella, he decides to move on, but then he goes back to always being there for her when she appears again. The first time it happened, I thought that this would be a new beginning for them as adults. No, it wasn't. I felt like slapping some sense into him several times, but his love was apparently too strong and one can certainly admire a man so dedicated to his true love for so long.

Elizabeth was probably the reason that I couldn't enjoy this story. At first, I thought that since she was a few years younger than Thom, her feelings may not have been at the same place at the same time. When they meet years later, she starts feeling something, but thinks it's lust. She was extremely immature and selfish; she rejects Thom time and time again, yet expects him to be around whenever she needs help. Towards the end, there was some attempt to redeem her character, but it was a little late for me at that point.

Ms. McCarty's writing style and historical detail always make her books enjoyable, but, unfortunately, this story didn't draw me in as usual. I look forward to her next installment in the series.

I received this ebook from NetGalley for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read from Monica McCarty and I would read more of her books. Set in Scotland at the time when Robert The Bruce was king and winning Scotland's freedom from the English. Ms McCarty has researched the history of this period and uses many actual historical characters. Being a bit of a history bluff, this drew me in and had me searching for more information. On the other hand the attention to detail slowed the story down especially in the first third or so of the book. However you will be rewarded as you continue to read. The rest of the storyline is faster paced with lots of action and not just in the romance department.
The beginning of the story, though a little draggy, is important to understand how a blacksmith' s son and the lord's daughter became life-long friends. Thom MacGowan was told by his father, her brother and others that she was not for him, feudal classes just did not mix. Thom fell in love with Elizabeth anyway. Thom leaves his home to join the fight, to become more than a blacksmith, a knight. He hopes to become worthy of Elizabeth. Her brother arranges a match between her and the king' s nephew, thought to be a good one for both, loveless but a good match nonetheless. With Elizabeth out of reach, Thom contemplates marriage to a landed widow. Since I don't believe in reviews that contain spoilers, you will need to read this book to find out if Thom and Elizabeth find happiness. Or will they choose others for wealth rather than love? Will Thom be able to reach his dream of knighthood and live up to his nickname of Rock? How does their story fit into the history of the time? I recommend you read this book to find out.

The fairytale was not going to come true. No matter how hard he tries, even when he climbs up into the princess's tower, Thomas MacGowan learns early on that Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of Lord Douglas can never be for him. Childhood friends, Thom the son of the castle blacksmith is smitten by Elizabeth right from when she was just a wee young thing who trailed around behind him and her brother Jamie.
Rejected, Thom joins Bruce's army still dreaming that he might one day be in a position to offer for Elizabeth.
Meantime, Elizabeth has outgrown childhood fancies and is determined to marry for position and power.
When her younger brother is imprisoned by the English, Elizabeth asks Thom, who has the uncanny ability to climb sheer rock faces, to attempt his rescue.
Thom's talent brings him to the attention of Bruce's secret army--The Highland Guards, but will this bring him to Elizabeth's attention? Oh, Thom has Elizabeth's womanly attention despite her rationality--something she fights hard.
Given the secret name of The Rock, Thom is revealed as so much more--solid, unwavering and committed. Indeed Thom's skill was to be a turning point in Bruce's plans for overthrowing the English and in taking Roxburg and Edinburg castles.
MacCarty's expose on the hierarchy in the society of the times is fascinating. I love her attention to detail.
I really liked Thom. I actually wondered if Elizabeth was worthy of him. Fortunately Thom thought she was. I will admit to being frequently out of charity with Elizabeth. Sure I understand her reasoning (given her childhood insecurities). She leads Thom and herself a merry dance as she fights her desire for wealth and position over love.
Initially this story didn't for me quite have the verve of others in the series, but as the story unfolded it revealed itself as an interesting addition, both frustrating and yet complex, different and immensely enjoyable.

The Rock by Monica McCarty continues her Highland Guard series with the story of Thomas MacGowan and Elizabeth Douglas. Thomas is the son of a blacksmith and an excellent climber, the skill that gets him into the Highland Guard, while Elizabeth is the daughter of a Lord. They’ve always loved each other, but their respective social standings during 14th century Europe prevents them from acting on their feelings.

I’ve been with this series from the beginning, and if you love a good historical romance with some sexy highlanders check out this series. Monica McCarty is very skilled at her research, and she provides a story with historical accuracy in a way that is rarely seen. Each member of the Highland Guard falls for a woman who is strong and sure, and The Rock is no different.

Thomas and Elizabeth are the couple that shouldn’t be together, and their struggle to fight their feelings is the main focus of the book, set in the backdrop of a war where former friends are now foes. Unlike the other books I felt the angst in this one dragged on, bringing in people and causing new problems that got to be too much, adding a bit of desperation as opposed to angst as time went on. Thomas is a protector, and tries to find a way to rise above his humble beginnings without realizing he’s done so years ago. The person he protects the most is Elizabeth, who he tries to wait for despite her misgivings.

The journey of this story gave a different feel than the others, because the personal development for these characters was front and center for this book as opposed to issues with war. The eleventh book in the series helped continue to keep the series very relevant, and I cannot wait for the conclusion. Monica McCarty will always be one of my go to history romance authors, and no one does Highlanders quite like she does.

3.5 STARS
Another great book! I love this series. For someone who enjoys history (so much so, I went for my degree), Monica McCarty’s stories are rich in detail and historical goodies. Her writing style is wonderful; she has a real talent for drawing the read to her characters.

Thomas MacGowan and Lady Elizabeth Douglas come from different worlds. He is the son of a blacksmith and she is nobility, yet they were childhood friends. While growing up, Thomas hoped that he and Elizabeth could be together one day, but social status and her fear of being disowned by her family kept them apart. As they grew older, Thomas confesses his love for Elizabeth, but she refuses. She feels that she has a duty to her Clan.

Thomas MacGowan is a relatively new character in the series, but I found him to be endearing, super sweet and everything he did was for love. Elizabeth on the other hand had a tendency to be mean and manipulative. Though she insisted that she felt only friendship toward Thomas and kept pushing him away, she also kept chasing after him. She made it nearly impossible for the poor man to move with his life. He could have found someone else and at times, I wish he would. I found myself hoping Elizabeth would turn it around and that I could find something about her that I liked, but it didn’t really happen. She was downright irritating and the reason I gave this book 3 instead of 4 stars. On the plus side, the pacing was good and the writing was amazing. Ms. McCarty writing is smooth and effortless, which makes for quick, enjoyable reads.

I’m excited to see what The Ghost (Highland Guard #12) will bring

This is book 11 in the "Highland Guard" series. I have read all the book in the series and in order but I really don't think you have too. I just like when I can to do so to keep me strait on what books I have read. But they are written so well that you don't have to worry that you are missing anything if you jump around. So I would say it is a Stand Alone Book. I really like Monica McCarty writing/books and when I see her name I know I will be getting a really good read. This book was just as good as the others~ Our hero Thomas MacGowan, met our heroine, Elizabeth Douglas when they were both young. They became fast friends even though they were from different environment. Elizabeth parents were well off and Thom father was a blacksmith. They stayed friends until the became older and Thom realized he was in love with Elizabeth. Elizabeth at the time only really thought of him as a friend and had no real thoughts of love. Elizabeth was raised to believe that her marriage would be for to better the family. Also at this tom Thom has a fallen out with Elizabeth brother over the way he hurt a friend of his (another female friend from the town that hung out with all of them) so with that and with the knowledge that her brother nor Elizabeth were accepting of his feelings he left to join the Edward Bruce’s army. But fate had different things in mind and they meet up again. This is were we find how they were able to overcome so much and to work things out to be together. A really great read that I hope you too will enjoy~~

Having grown up together, Thomas MacGowen is heartbroken when he learns that Lady Elizabeth Douglas doesn't share his feelings. His father, the blacksmith, warned him but you can't help you you fall for. Knowing that he wanted more for his life than to follow in his father's footsteps, he joins the Bruce's army to change his lot in life.

Several years later, Elizabeth is in need to Thomas's help. He wants to turn her down just to spite her, but knowing that an innocent child is at risk he does his duty. As Elizabeth is soon to marry a proper man, she is shocked to find herself so attracted to Thomas. She knows that the son of a blacksmith is not good enough for her, but her heart is telling her otherwise.

Can this unlikely duo find the happiness that both of their hearts are longing for?

I absolutely loved Thomas!! Elizabeth on the other hand...not so much. She did grow on me as we got to the second half of the book, but it was a little too late for me. I kinda wish that Thomas had found someone else...

I did enjoy the storyline and of course I enjoyed seeing the other members of the Highland Guard again. McCarty's next and last book in the series, the Ghost, comes out in May/June 2016. I think we have all been waiting to see what happened to Alex Seton when he left the Guards. I can't wait to read it!!

Thanks go out to Pocket Books via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

The Highland Guard series written by Monica McCarty is superbly amazing! The Rock is the 11th book in the set and was released December 29th 2015 by Gallery Books. You guys have got to get on bored with these books!

Out of all the books, I would have to say that while this one seemed to frustrate me the most it was the most realistic of them all in regards to how feelings affect people. Both the hero, Thom, and the heroine, Elizabeth, are hardheaded and stubborn when it came to their feelings for each other. But isn't that how we all are when it comes to love?

He has been in love with her since they were little and when he finally tells her and she doesn't react the way that he wants her to, he gets hurt and angry, then disappears for 3 years to become something more worthy than he believes he currently is. She on the other hand is completely naive to her feelings for him because she never looked at him as more than just a friend and her fear from being poor when she was a young girl has her not looking past their stations to a possible future together.

While it was frustrating to see them go back and forth with their feelings for each other, it was nice to catch a glimpse of what real love looks like. People get hurt, lash out at the one that they truly love, and make mistakes. This book is filled with a bunch of that which is what makes it wonderful!!

ARC graciously provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is by far my favorite book in this series.

Thomas has been in love with Elizabeth since he was a kid. He always knew that she was the one and knew that if he wanted to win her he needed to become a king's soldier. So in order to win her heart and love he left to become what she needed even though it was a long shot. Soon the Highland Guard takes note of him and he must decide what is more important being a part of the guard or winning over Lady Elizabeth.

What I loved most about this book was that Thomas refused to give up on Elizabeth. His love endured more than most can take and yet he still persisted. There were so many times in this book where I almost just wanted him to give up. But that persistance and determination is what made Thomas my favorite story so far.

This book was amazing and it goes to show that a truly talented author can make each and every book more different and entertaining as the last. I can't wait to see what Monica has in store for these crazy group of highlanders next.

This latest edition to the Highland Guard had me going between 4-5 stars. As with all the others in the series, I did thoroughly enjoy it. I loved seeing how Thom and Elizabeth met when they were children and then got older and what caused the riff between them.

What had me so annoyed (I'm quite strong-willed and stubborn), was Ella's naivety where Thom was concerned. She'd unintentionally lead him on and then she would be "confused" when he professed his love to her, but when the time came to return his love, she denied him. This is what bothered me. I'm not a fan of cowardice and she sure was full of it in spades. Granted, at that time, I understand you couldn't always follow your heart and thank goodness for the 21st century! Luckily Thom was strong and fought for what he wanted! Ella ended up redeeming herself, so the book warranted 5 stars since the book did its job: made me feel!

I was cheering Thom on in all his endeavors and was so proud of him for accomplishing what he set out to do!

The Rock (Highland Guard, #11)
by Monica McCarty
The son of a blacksmith does not have very high reach. Thommy has loved her since childhood, when he saved her from her from her own folly. When on her toes she had sworn that she would marry him for saving her. The only problem is that she is the daughter of his lord. His reach can not grasp the lofty heights of her illustrious world.
She was tempered by difficult childhood, marked by the early death of her father. Leaving her and her family destitute until someone finally helped. She was afraid of going back to the hand to mouth living that haunted her nights. Thommy was her best friend her rock in a world that is untrustworthy and with many pot holes.
Their love was against social ideals, their passion un-quenched and volatile. Yet, if they could reign in their ideals and find the path by determination, and trust they could find all that they hoped for and more.
This book is a great look into the high politics of Scotland at the tumultuous time of the rebellion and siege.

This Highlander series from Monica is one of my favorites to read! She travels to Scotland to search the history of her books. She does a good job. I read these stories and always learn something new. It is really graphic when the scene calls for it. I would say this is a mature read story. Her lead characters drove me crazy in this book. Lots of Spoilers. Childhood friends are going back and forth on their love. Thomas is a smithy' s son and Elizabeth is the Black Douglas's sister. They can't get close. Thomas has the ability to climb, trees and rock walls. The Bruce adds him to his Special Guard to climb into castles to take them over. Elizabeth has been terrified to become a beggar again. Spoiler. She will wed a rich man and destroy Thom. Big Spoilers. If you like Scotland this will give you a new outlook. I hope you choose to pick this book. You will find some more history. Enjoy your reading! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

The story is about a poor boy and a noble girl. He has loved her all his life but she doesn't want poverty in her future so she refuses to admit that she loves him, too.
At first, she is even oblivious of her own feelings. That's the power of ambition, I guess.
The male character, Thom, is great. He's strong, handsome and willing to do everything to get the girl of his dreams.
But Ella...she is sometimes a little annoying. She is more interested in being important and rich than true love. I would have shaked her in some moments.
I really liked this book. The historical background is very interesting. And the differences between both social clases are well explained. It is not necessary to read the previous books from this series; Although a lot of characters are mentioned, they are not essential to the plot of this book.

Monica McCarty has written another amazing book weaving true historical events into The Rock. Thom is strong, caring and a true hero who gives his all for the woman he loves. Elizabeth was conflicted. She was trying to live within the strictures of the time period. Yet, when she needs help, she turns to Thom. Finally, Elizabeth sees Thom for who he is and what he means to her. Yes, the back and forth is kind of confusing at times, but you still get the HEA.
I am all about true "historical" romances. This is Ms. McCarty's gift -- recognizing and writing a true picture of that day and time.
This is only the 3rd book in this series that I have read. Obviously, I need to go back and start at the beginning. You can read this as a stand-alone and still enjoy it as I have. Thank you Net Galley for sharing this free copy with me.

Elizabeth and Thom had met when he was almost nine and she was six. They had forged a bond and became friends . As time went on Thom grew to love Elizabeth and he believed she loved him. When Thom goes to Elizabeth and asks her about them getting married as she had said they would when they were younger and she just said she had been joking that they were friends and Thom knew that. So finally Thom tries to move on and finds a woman who wants to marry him for him himself. But Elizabeth gets upset and says nooooo….
I just just didn’t like Elizabeth at all . She was spoiled and selfish. Not wanting Thom to find happiness with someone else. I just didn’t enjoy this story.

Thomas MacGowan (Thommy) later to become "The Rock" and his childhood friend Elizabeth (Ella) grow up and come to realize that lower born and high born do not mix. Ella pronounced at the age of 6 that she would be marrying her Thommy, but childhood dreams are not always realities with the coming of age for a high born such as Ella. The characters are always well developed, and consistency in the details of the times are so much a part of the story with each Highland Guard book. There are many friends from previous books, but in no way will you be lost if you have not read any of them. I highly recommend The Rock! It is a stand alone, but why would you want to? Audio: Another job well done, Antony Ferguson. I don't think I could listen to his narration of another (non Highlander) book without imagining Bruce's Phantoms.
Story: I really enjoyed this! Elizabeth and Thom first made an appearance in James and Joanna's novella, The Knight (my favorite in this series), and it was fun to see all of them together again, even if the threat of James killing Thom hung over every page.

As with the other books in this series, this can be read as a stand alone, but it makes for a more consistent story if you read the whole series. There are also mild spoilers from previous books.

Great addition to the series! I'm looking forward to the final book.

Monica McCarty sure knows to weave and spun words beautifully into a well written and meaningful story.

Thom is s blacksmith’s son who fell in love with his laird daughter. A match between them has zero chance of ever coming into fruition because of their rank. This is the story of how they defy all odds to be together.

Rich history, war torn battles, poverty, rank, wealth, and most importantly love, all come together in this wonderful masterpiece.

Having already caught the attention and accolades of both USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists, it is no wonder that Monica McCarty continues to capture the hearts of her readers. Her inexhaustible research into the medieval feudal system and Scottish clan history has paid off as she has once again woven a delightful tale of love that knows no bounds. Her ability to weave accurate historical facts into a story that encapsulates both the difficulties inherent to the stratified society of feudal Scotland and the much begrudged “friend zone” dilemma of today is nothing short of magical! Feel free to read this book as a stand-alone novel or as part of the much beloved Highland Guard series. Either way, Monica McCarty will keep you coming back for more!

I enjoyed the 11th book in Monica McCarty’s Highland Guard series. I really appreciated the history that she deeply interweaves into her stories, and I love the emotional depth that she creates in her characters. I have a few quotes that I would like to add, but this was an advance reader copy containing a disclaimer telling us not to quote without verification, so I will refrain until I get confirmation. Set in and around Douglas, Roxburgh, and Edinburgh areas of Scotland, the characters spend a bit of time along the borderland as the men are actively working against the English for independence.

Elizabeth Douglas and Thomas MacGowan were unlikely childhood friends – the daughter of the laird and the son of the village blacksmith. As they grew older, their relationship strengthens, and Thom puts his heart on the line…only to have Elizabeth dismiss his feelings. When he hardens his heart and moves on, he closes Elizabeth out. Once she tracks him down, her insistence on connecting with him as a friend only aggravates the feelings he has suppressed over the years. Thom finally decides to fight for Elizabeth, but can he trust Elizabeth to fight for them?

I was aggravated with Elizabeth as a character. I was not a huge fan of her oblivious outlook and unreasonable expectations. I think because I liked and connected with Thom so much she kind of seemed more trouble than she was worth. Honestly, though, we see similar situations today and they tug on the emotions just as much as this one did. I think fans of the series enjoy this book, and fans of history will love the in-depth author’s note at the end.

The Rock was waaayyy better than the previous book in the series, The Striker, yet I gave The Striker 5 stars. So it should tell you something on how good The Rock was.
Monica McCarty sure knows how to weave words together so that you find yourself smack in early 14th century wishing you could have lived then (conveniently forgetting modern medicines, inventions and comforts).
I was relieved to find all the Guard members back on the pages (they were disappointingly mostly absent in The Striker). But even better was that we had not just all the Phantoms present but a full cast including Edward Bruce, James Douglas, Thomas Randolph and of course The Bruce himself. It made my day! I think what makes this series so successful is that we love the Highland Guard. And we can't live without reading bits and pieces of their lives in between the unfolding romance of the two main characters. Monica does a splendid job in this book keeping us hooked.
I can't wait for The Ghost. I really do hope the whole story doesn't play off in England only as I would love to see all the Guard members preparing for the Bannockburn battle. And I really do hope we see a lot of Robert Bruce coming forward in that book as he was after all immortalized with that battle.
I also hope Monica finishes Thomas Randolph's story before The Ghost comes out. Can't wait to read that!

The Rock, book 11 in the highland guard series, was another fabulous novel from Monica McCarty. I absolutely loved it. It only took me two days to read this book because I was so entranced by the characters and their personalities that I couldn't put the book down. I love the repartee between the characters in the book. Reading this book was like watching a full length film--- I laughed, then I cried, then I laughed again, then I cried just a little bit more at the struggles I could see the characters going through in my minds eye. She has such an eye for describing situations that you can't help but be instantly pulled into in the book with your mind and your heart.

Another great addition to Monica McCarty's Highland Guard series. I've been a huge fan ever since the release of The Arrow and have since gone back and read earlier books in the series and I have loved them all. McCarty has a way of weaving her stories with such believability and such great character depth that you can't help falling in love with the series. My one piff with the book is that Elizabeth was a bit dense at times and stalkerish which didn't endear her to me as much but all in all, a great read. 4Stars

I was a little disappointed with this book in the series, since Striker's book was so good and fast paced! Although this book was slow and had a rushed ending, Monica McCarty writes really well and I loved Thomas character, he was good, knew what he wanted and fought for it,even with all hardship he went trough, he didn't give up, but Elizabeth got on my nerves so many times, she was too selfish! It was always what she wanted and had little consideration for his feeling for her.
