This book is beautifully illustrated, and so sweet--it's the story of the toys on a child's shelf, with each of the toys waiting for something. For one it's the moon, for another it's the rain. It reinforces vocabulary without being over the top. It keeps my toddler's interest. Best of all: there is no subtle (or not so subtle) pressure for bedtime. I think it's the only book we own where the main character isn't going to sleep at the end of the book! How refreshing. I will be buying this book as gifts for other parents--that's how much I like it.

The illustrations are cute and the soft edges to the characters are wonderful. However, the story is somewhat lacking and predictable. It's more likely to be a read-once and finished rather than a favorite.

As a former preK and kindergarten teacher, and now grandmother, I would have to say that Kevin Henkes and Mo Willems are my favorite authors. This is a story that is sure tol be a winner to young children. Waiting will be a story that will be on their read again request list. It's a story about some sweet little animals who are waiting for a variety of things. Children understand the concept of waiting, and will clearly relate to the characters in this story. Other Henkes books I would recommend are: A Very Good Day and Kitten's First Full Moon. Kevin Henkes books are illustrated by the author and many have won awards for their illustrations. They would be wonderful books to keep at your home when you're expecting those special little visitors. Also, don't pass on books by Mo Willems like Knuffle Bunny and Pigeon Needs a Bath.
Enemy Pie (Reading Rainbow book) :: The Three Questions [Based on a story by Leo Tolstoy] :: Each Kindness (Jane Addams Award Book (Awards)) :: Those Shoes :: The Invisible Boy

I love Kevin Henkes books. This one did not disappoint. The illustrations are peaceful and beautiful. I gave this as a gift for a baby shower. It was perfect. I will be buying numerous copies to have on hand for future gifts!

This book truly appeals to children who understand what waiting for something is all about. My granddaughter was fascinated as the story took her through the tale of each animal and what they were "waiting" for. She especially loved the addition of the cats at the end of the story.

Beautiful book! Love the illustrations and my 4 year old really responses well to this story. I ALWAYS SKIP the page where the toy breaks. Personal choice. But it adds an element of sadness with no real resolution or reason. I don't mind a sad part in a story, as long as they explain it well. Otherwise, LOVE this story.

I purchased this book for my daughter and read it on the Kindle app -- reading books on the Kindle is the toddler's new 'thing' - I have to say I'm wholly to blame for starting this habit and I've spent quite a bit of money on books for the Kindle in recent weeks -- since starting this trend I've found that many books aren't suited for the Kindle, in my opinion this is one of those books -- Now one can argue that no books are suited for the Kindle, maybe you just like the aesthetic of the printed page? -- and maybe that's me -- but I don't think this book can be done justice on a Kindle -- and with that said, it's not worth the current price to purchase it for that medium.

Summary: Several small toys/knick knacks if you will, sit on a windowsill waiting for something or nothing at all --

I do think the book is worthwhile, it's not a classic by any means -- but it has a thoughtful voice, one in which a lesser writer could not have achieved in so few pages --I found the book engaging, wondering what will happen with each toy as their waiting ends - well I have to say I was a bit disappointed on most fronts, I guess I was expecting something more clever... but possibly I just got a face full of reality, the book is sort of melancholy so I guess it works-- now that's my opinion -- the toddler was a little less impressed, this so far has been a one read book(that very well may change) and with that I circle around to the cost of the Kindle version -- she was engaged throughout the reading, no flying off my lap or engaging in other activities, but she didn't shout Again!! as she usually does when really excited about a story -- So in the end, if I'm going to have a one read book, I probably would have preferred something more tangible -- I would give this book 3 and a half stars, but for the strength of the writing, I think I can round up -- plus, I truly did like it...

The characters waiting in this story delight my granddaughters ages 4 and 6. Whether waiting for something or for nothing in particular, they do so with a great deal of charm and patience.
The illustrations are beautiful and enhance this lovely story!
