I have been searching for years and after paying about $20,000 for tests and treatments by 2 gastroenterologists and a Dr of Neuropathy, I have finally found Dr Campbell-McBride to be a credible source. I went on the stage 1 diet and immediately my insomnia went away. I have had debilitating auto immune symptoms for about 5 years and this treatment is showing encouraging results.

Bought this along with that one: GAPS Guide 2nd Edition: Simple Steps to Heal Bowels, Body, and Brain

This book is the start to the GAPS diet. Fascinating read for anyone with chronic health issue. Some sections are harder to read (more medical) but overall it is a comprehensive read and great start to a better health.

I have implemented part of the diet for gluten intolerance and can already feel the benefits.

If you have one of the health problems like Autism or Fibromyalgia and are very very serious about getting rid of it then this book is for you. I don't so I found all the in depth doctor stuff the first several chapters to be difficult to get through. I think if you have yeast over growth or other gut/intestinal problems and you need to start your gut over this is a great idea.

Absolutely a must if you have a family member with autism, ADHD, ADD or bipolar disorder. So few people understand how allergies and a leaky gut can result in devastating depression and negative behaviors. The author is extremely knowledgeable about how the 'gut' affects the brain and how the type of food we eat affects us.

Being well versed in nutrition and health I wasn't expecting to learn much from this book. However, the 10 or so things that I learnt were so important that I was able to improve my digestive system and overall health so much that it was as if I de-aged 10 years in 2 months! I also lost 15 pounds and 2 1/2 inches off my waist during a period of great stress in my life and without having any exercise program. I can't stress how useful this book can be for anyone suffering from digestive issues.

After reading this book I had a greater understanding of my body's reactions to foods, but this is a book which I believe Dr.s and nurses would understand more easily. As I continue to study it I expect to come into a greater understanding of the way my body reacts to foods. BUT==It requires work on my part to understand.

The gut and food issues are explained so well that I now use it as a Gut Bible. :) While the diet recommended is not something I’ve done, I’ve made other changes that have made a huge difference. The best part is that now I feel comfortable talking about food choices and explaining why someone should eat fermented food or cut on carbs. Great book for sure!

This book presents trans-disciplinary medical research, by a formally trained physician, that represents an alternative approach to many modern health phenomena experienced in the West. In addition to providing the reader with new data regarding both mental and general health conditions, Dr. Campbell-McBride at length explains why comorbidity exist between numerous conditions viewed as separate maladies. This book is a potent tool for anyone who has come to understand the limits of modern medicine operating in our advanced capitalist system, where shareholders and market growth have had perverse effects on many areas including how a Doctor functions day to day with patients.

Bone broth, micro biome health and confronting the reality of our nutrient difficient western diet and how it shapes are internal micro flora is key to becoming a healthy creature that can reconnect with our natural surroundings. Dr. McBride has so many solutions for issues that are modern "phenomena" (autism, IBS, Celiac, Crones) when the present rate of diagnosis is considered.

The book is well worth the time invesment to read. Tired of being a passive repeat customer of the modern medical market? This book represents a new path using current medical data and nutrition research. McBride is ahead of her time and one can only imagine how dangerous the Pharmacological industry and modern medical academy, who train Doctors w/o teaching nutrition, must feel about her data?

The Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS)conversation, which this book has begun, has profoundly changed the lives of children and adults who are suffering from gut flora problems. I got this book because I'm seeing in my practice more and more children and parents affected by autism. In reading this it's become clear that people with autism are only a small portion of the population suffering with GAPS.
When I see people with overlapping issues including two or more of: mental health, asthma, eczema, allergies, adhd, add, dyspraxia, dyslexia, and/or autism spectrum,I am now referring to this book and to either a nutritionist or a naturopath.
This book is a gem. It's very well researched, written by a heart specialist (MD) whose son has autism and she refused to believe that there was no help for him. In fact she says that autistic children when appropriately treated and educated become "almost indistinguishable from their typically developing peers." Wow.
At the same time the book is very readable and helpful for both lay people and professionals. She covers the reasons for the big jump in autism (and other disorders) and how to get a very resistant child to participate in a significant change in life style.
If you know someone who has autism (especially) order this book. I have clients who after getting this book have ordered copies for everyone they know who's affected by autism (or a mix of the other issues). There is hope and this book is really really changing people's lives.

Very informative. More doctors treating digestive issues should read this book. After many, many invasive tests it simply was a matter of improving my gut flora. Dr. Campbell
McBride's advice is very easy to follow

There are several aspects to comment about when it comes to this book, the scientific content which I found to be well presented but the language itself could have used a bit of work from time to time. And then lastly the actual topic, excellent. This is information that should be well spread all over the (at least western) world. I recommend everyone to read more about what foods are good for us and why, even though we might not be sick yet.

After several months of sickness in my family, a friend told us we should go on a diet to restore our immune systems. I was extremely skeptical, and resistant to the initial thought of the GAPS diet. I have many friends who are into natural healing, and some of it is outright quackery, in my opinion. Nevertheless I finally read the book, and even though I read critically, in the end I was thoroughly convinced. In a nutshell, the thesis is that many mental and behavioral problems are directly related to problems in our digestive system. The reasons are varied, but basically an overload of toxins in our environment and food have wreaked havoc on our digestive system, which enters a vicious cycle. Bad bacteria proliferate, foods aren't digested, nutrients aren't absorbed, and toxins are created in our own digestive system. Ever smelled some bad gas before? This book details the diet meant to restore the digestive system, and thus alleviate one of the big sources of health problems.

I highly recommend this book if you or your children have food allergies, attention problems, behavioral issues, autism, or depression. I will offer one big caveat. This diet will not cure everything, and it can be taken to extremes that aren't good. Some view it as a "low carb" diet. It's not, it's actually a "specific carbohydrate" diet (SCD) the name given to it by Elaine Gottschall in Food and the Gut Reaction. Eliminating carbs will cause problems. You just need simple carbs, not complex starches and sugars. It fits into the general philosophy of Paleo, Weston Price, etc. but is a temporary restorative diet.

It's hard to stick to, I will admit. But I found that when I do stick to the diet, my digestion improves dramatically, my energy levels go up, my mind is clear, and I am much more productive. My goal is to be able to drink milk in two years. We'll see!

I also would highly recommend another book - Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies: The Groundbreaking Program for the 4-A Disorders. While GAPS is mainly a diet book, Bock's book gives a big picture that includes the SCD (GAPS) diet among other options, supplements and medicines. Having perspective is so helpful so you don't get tunnel vision and put all your eggs in one single basket.

Been suffering from chronic vertigo and brain fog among other things for the past year....since starting GAPS 2 months ago, the fog has gone and I'm down to 3-4 bad days/month from 20-30. It is a very labor intensive diet, but once you kind of get going it just becomes your new normal, and as you start feeling better that helps, too. I feel like I am giving myself and my family the very very best of nutrition and have loved seeing my kids really thrive. I would recommend working w a GAPS practitioner...at least to figure out what supplements you should/should not be taking. I would have had no clue where to begin. It is expensive, but even if you can get a consultation then you can kind of go on from there. If you're eating a "healthy American diet" like we were (no fast food, few processed foods, not much meat), your grocery bill WILL go up. But weighing the cost with the benefit, we wouldn't have it any other way.

This book is a well-researched if slightly scientific guide on the impact of our gut on our health. This book explains the important role our gut plays in every aspect of health, from brain function to skin health to psychological function. The focus in this book is often on children, but the advice and information is equally applicable to adults. This book is a dense read, but solid information for people who are looking to understand how the gut works, and how taking care of the gut can lead to overall health. This is a useful guide for people who want natural solutions for chronic health problems such as allergies, skin conditions, ADD, immune issues, and so forth.

Next to Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon this is now my next most used book for nutrition. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride guides you back to living healthful. I was amazed at all the research that went into this book. Whether you are a beginner or thought you were educated in nutrition, this book will open your mind. This book should be required study for any doctor or health care professional.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride makes the science of the function of our bodies, so incredibly easy to understand! She gives you the why of foods, why you should or shouldn't eat them or when best to eat them or reintroduce them to your diet. Not just do this don't do that. It's a fantastic book, quick and easy to read. She equips you for success if you decide to make the changes to your diet. Highly recommend this book!

I'm in my early 30s, in the last couple of years I've developed food allergies to food groups I've always eaten. I've had bowel and gas issues for as long as I can remember. In the last few years, I've developed a severe debilitating complete body rash that has been unexplained by various doctors in various fields, until my functional doctor started talking gut health I really felt like it was going to be something I would have to deal with the rest of my life. He is the one who started working with me on healing my gut through diet and supplements, right in line with Dr. Campbell-McBride's research. Working with him in addition to reading her book and changing over to the GAPS diet has done wonders for my health and healing of my body!

This book helped me to self-diagnose some chronic problems. It also provided a whole healing protocol.
This book isn't only for people dealing with Autism, its for everyone who has undiagnosed or weird health issues and could use some support. It convinced me that many health issues start in the gut and can be healed the same way. I'm seeing results!

I found this book when I attended a Weston A. Price Foundation conference and heard a speaker who talked about healing children with significant behavioral issues via this GAPS diet and if it doesn't work the SCD diet. Google this if you need more information.

But, buy this book!

I have been studying nutrition and health for many years now. I've been gluten free for a long time. I did the candida diet years ago, which helped a lot. I have never really conquered all of the symptoms that slow me down, though. I learned a lot by reading this book, and I love the clear explanations behind the diet. I understand the diet and the why's behind it. Campbell-McBride has done a great job of communicating her work to those of us who need help. I read this about a month ago and have since eliminated all grains from my diet. I am starting to see progress. It took a while, but my joint pain is going away. I understand clearly now why eliminating all grains is important and why healing the gut is the key to getting well. I especially love that this is a temporary, healing diet, not a permanent way of life. Thank you Natasha Campbell-McBride for sharing your expertise.

How can gluten causes so many different diseases, like Autism, ADD, Schizophrenia, depression, and more? Literary hundreds of health problems! It is a global epidemic!!! How come most of the world doesn't know? How come not ALL doctors know? How come not all patients get helped? How come kids get pharmaceutical drugs to keep them quiet instead of simply changing their diet to get well??? It is soooo upsetting!!!! Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride is one of the pioneers in this field. One of the f-e-w pioneers, I should add. Suffering b/c of gluten is so un-necessary. Pls spread the word! We all need to help each other!

this book is extremely well researched, from a scientific point of view.
It is unfortunately very hard too follow the diet initially as the book is badly layed out and needs restructuring.
The diet does deliver and helps controll symptoms of dislexia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

This book is great for anyone who is truly seeking answers and healing. It has been a God send for my family and the info has helped others I know as well. After a year and a half my daughter was healed of all food sensitivities and a host of neurological symptoms, as well as learning difficulties. She is also able to tolerate chlorine in her daily life again. It was exactly what she needed.

However, it is not a one-size-fits-all program and is much more intense than what some people require. I recommend anyone considering it pray for guidance. We were able to adapt several aspects of the plan to our provided resources and it did not slow down the healing. I pray anyone venturing to make this lifestyle change will be as blessed as we have been.

The author of this book is a brilliant Neurologist and the mother of an autistic child. It is a great blessing that she has provided us with the benefit of her meticulous research and her incisive expertise. She also posts updates and supplementary information on her website [...]

Time will undoubtedly prove her right about the crucial importance of healthy gut flora. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to learn how to apply the wisdom she shares so generously.
