New Species are my all time favorite serial books. I don't ever worry that the stories are boring and this shorter double story was no exception. 927 anD Mourn were different as night and day yet the same. The plot and characters were new and old yet the stories had their own distinct pathways of angst and sexy Alpha male that will keep you sweating. Oh yeah.

I laughed and cried in these two stories. I have been patiently waiting for Laurann's next New Species installment, she didn't disappoint in giving her readers 2 stories in one book. I really loved them both, but Hero and Candi's story was so sad and touching I was wiping tears for quite a few pages. No more spoilers, get this book for yourself.

I am pleased as punch with Numbers !
Both of these stories were brilliantly written, heartwrenchingly emotional, and sinfully sexy. It takes a powerful story to rip my heart out and bring real tears to my eyes. This book did that. I will simply say that Laurann Dohner blew me away with this one. I can't wait for the next New Species book.

Excellent read. 2 books in one & both were very good. Exciting all the way to the end with great look backs at what happened from the beginning of the New Species. Hoping for more from this author. Even though we have a lot of books in this series, they are all new plots & keep the story rolling along. :-)

I love Laurann Dohners books!!!! I couldn't wait to get a hold of Numbers. I loved that it has two books in one. I just wished they where longer and maybe had some more scenes of trouble I guess That's what I am trying to say. But Numbers is great!!!!! Definitely going to re-read the whole series again and again. Can wait for the next book.

She is probably my most favorite author. I always look forward to her newest books. They are incredibly easy to read and very difficult to put down. They are very steamy. I would love to be one of her characters.

Please keep them coming. I hate the thought of this series ending. Loved the steamy hot sex scenes but also the humor was great especially when the females are learning about house hold products and when they were teasing Kat. Highly recommend this series

While I usually really enjoy Laurann Dohner's books this one was a disappointment. I would rather have seen both stories get there own books, or at least be more developed. And bit of a spoiler here ...but I had a real problem with Hero still blaming Candice for the one time she "allowed" was really forced to let another male mate with her to save Hero's life. While I understand him being upset when it happened and feeling betrayed then. I don't want to tell all of the story line... but come on its been years and he thinks she has been dead all this time and his first reaction is not only to run but still blame her when he has been with multiply females. I know he thought her to be dead but its like he still acts as if she was in the wrong. He does say he feels guilty for what happened but it just didn't ring right somehow. And here she just forgives him for everything. It read more than a little sexist to me. I think he was the one that should have been down on his knees begging forgiveness. It did get better as the story progressed but definitely not my favorite of Dohner's stories. Mourns book was better just wish it had been longer and more developed. I felt this story line was more sincere and more inline with the rest of the Species books.

I love Laurann Dohner, but I was irritated with this book for a couple reasons. 1. It was two stories and they were too short, and 2. A lot of information seemed to have been reused from other books. I love the New Species books, but I wasn't a fan of these two short stories.

Laurann Dohner is such a wonderful writer I have all her books. I have read all of her New Species Books and I love them all of the characters are well written . This is a top notch author. This one was well worth the wait and I will be reading it over and over again, just as I do all of her other books.

I've gotten so used to dangerous, evil, crazy people after the New Species and their mates that these stories were a refreshing change. I really enjoyed the continuation of this series with a two for one deal. The progression of these relationships were interesting and hot. Well worth reading.

Despite my best intentions, I began reading Numbers shortly after I discovered it had been delivered to my Kindle. I should have been sleeping. I professed on Facebook that I would not start it until morning. But when I finished the hockey romance I was reading, I could not resist opening Numbers to check out the inside. I still had no intention of reading it as it was already after one in the morning and I had to be up for work in a few hours. Then I made the mistake of flipping to the first novella, Mourn’s story, and was sucked in almost immediately. Eh, who needs sleep anyway? Unlike the full-length New Species novels, these novellas are far more focused on the relationship between each couple. While each relationship encountered its own type of conflict, we are still treated to the alpha male tendencies of the New Species, romance, steamy erotic scenes, and a happy ending as Ms. Dohner always gives her characters a happy ending.
140
Dana is visiting her brother Paul, who works as a nurse at Homeland, when Mourn (140) is brought in to be treated for injuries sustained in a fight. Knowing that she is pro-Species and has similar medical training, Paul drafts her to help out when they’re shorthanded in treating Mourn. When Midnight shares why Mourn instigated the fight, Dana feels a kinship for the man whose mate has died as she lost her husband to cancer two years earlier. When the two are left alone in the exam room, Dana does what no one else has been able to do – she gives Mourn an understanding of his grief that he hadn’t been able (or willing) to face. Her offer for more conversation is not well met by Mourn and she doesn’t expect to hear from him. Needless to say, she’s quite surprised when he jumps her brother’s wall the next evening in order to talk, and the next evening, and the next evening, you get the picture. Dana feels such a connection to Mourn that she extends her visit and they decide to explore what could be.
Kindred spirits. That’s what Dana calls her and Mourn and I have to agree. The emotional connection that forms between them as the surviving partner is profound and felt so real. The way that Dana talks to Mourn about her late husband and the grief, the emptiness, the listlessness, the less than perfect marriage, and the importance of finding something to live for hit so close to home for me. Watching Mourn gradually open up was heartwarming as he looks to Dana for guidance in navigating his grief and moving forward – with her. I loved the advice that Darkness gave him and how determined Mourn was to show Dana the benefits of having a New Species mate. While the bedroom scenes were hot, it’s the trust he gives Dana with his secrets that demonstrates just how serious he is about her. I was shocked and dismayed by Paul and Dana’s mother – the woman was a witch. But I laughed my butt off when Mourn ripped open his shirt to show Mom why Dana liked him better than the doctor – ABS! Want to know what I’m talking about? Just look at the cover. Oh yeah! 140 not only gave me all the things I love about the New Species series, but it also hit me on an emotional level that made this a perfect read for me, especially with that ending!
927
As a fan of the series who has read most of the books multiple times, I was surprised that I had underestimated just how self-serving the doctors of Mercile could be. But within the few pages of the Prologue, Ms. Dohner reminded me of just how reprehensible they were. The Prologue begins 23 years earlier and we see how Candi and 927 first meet when both are children and I soon found myself filled with a level of loathing I had never experienced before. When we jump to the present we learn that Candi might have made it out of Mercile but she never found freedom as her father hid her away in a mental institution where she had been kept drugged for the past several years. Fortunately we join her escape attempt as it’s soon to be enacted as she’s just been informed that her father is dead and because there is no one to pay for her care, the doctor in charge has to get rid of her because the good doctor was in cahoots with her father. As Candi has spent the last seven years believing that 927 was murdered, she has one thing on her mind … vengeance for those involved in his murder. So she sets off to the only people who can help her in her mission, the New Species. But nothing could have prepared her for what she found at Homeland – belief, acceptance, and her Hero (927).
I have to say that in all of the New Species books that I’ve read, I would never have envisioned the storyline that Ms. Dohner has crafted. While the HOW is horrific, the idea of a human child raised alongside the New Species to the point that she is more them than human was fascinating. From the age of five she was treated as a New Species by both the Mercile employees and 927; being moved to the mental institution at age sixteen did nothing to dispel that mindset as she spent much of her time drugged and no attempts were made to “humanize” her. I loved her arrival at Homeland and how she practically refused to speak to the Task Force member once it became clear he was dismissing her as delusional. Candi may have been weak physically, but her inner strength would not allow her to give up and she soon found herself embraced by her people – New Species. Ms. Dohner giveth hope and Ms. Dohner taketh away when Candi and Hero first reunite. Heart shredding scene. Yet Candi refuses to let Hero go without a fight, even if said fight is with him and that makes for some seriously steamy scenes. I loved how welcoming the New Species women were and how she was accepted as one of them as soon as they learned of her history with Mercile and Hero. Even better was when Hero accepted their past was in the past and that their future was together. The author did surprise me with the FBI involvement in this one and just how much Darkness and Kat were included in the story – not a complaint but rather a very pleasant surprise. Yet another great story.
Numbers was a wonderful addition to the New Species series. With my reading schedule what it is, I don’t often have the time to go back and indulge in the past books due to their length, so the next time I’m hankering for some New Species lovin’, I can queue up either of these novellas for a quick fix. Well done Ms. Dohner. I cannot wait to see what you have in store for the New Species next.

Overall Rating: 4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆
Are you ready to enter the world of the New Species? I know I was and my expectations were met with this long awaited book. In this installment of the New Species series, the multi-talented author Laurann Dohner combines two stories into one book, Numbers. We are given more insight into the workings and relationships of daily life at Homeland. These stories are science fiction romance and you will not want to miss reading more about the characters we have grown to know and love so much. This is about how two New Species find their destined mates and eventually their HEA.
140’s story was first introduced to us in book 6 when he and his mate were rescued but she was dying from the drugs being pumped into her body by the vicious scientist of Mercile. When she died he felt part of him had died and accepted the name Mourn. Dana lost her husband to cancer and was also grieving from his loss. She decides to visit her brother, Paul (the human nurse we've known throughout the series) and meets Mourn when he is brought in to Medical. She is drawn to the devastated grief-stricken male. A bond of friendship blossoms between the two wounded souls as they find their way to a new beginning together.
927 saved Valiant's mate, Tammy in book 3. He has taken the name Hero and is well liked among the species. Candi's life was changed forever the night she witnessed her father murder her mother. She has been incarcerated in an asylum since she was sixteen and finally is able to escape and get to Homeland where she demands the New Species help her avenge her male. Malnourished and struggling to survive Candi is a survivor and when she and Hero connect the story unfolds with unexpected twists that will keep you reading until the end.
Both stories explain to readers and fans of the New Species series, the daily life at Homeland and we also get two happily ever after endings. Survivor is the theme of this remarkable book. Both couples survived losing parts of their souls but through their mates those pieces are made whole again and redemption is found. Beautiful love, possessive males, and addictive erotic scenes only enhance this reading experience created by Ms. Dohner. We highly recommend you add this book to your library.

two stories for the price of one. Both stories were compelling and held my interest. They were so totally different. The h/h worked very well. I have already reread this. picked up alot on the second read that I missed on the first. Another one hit out of the park.

I continue to enjoy this series. A four instead of a five because two shorter stories instead of one long novel isn't my preference. The shorter version means some of the complexity in the other tales was missing.

A really good read. Both stories brought tears to my eyes, as well as making me smile. The characters are really well drawn, especially seeing as the books are both novella length. I miss the longer more complex stories though, and hope that the next in series is a full length novel.

After reading all of the books in the series, some of them were getting to be a bit repetitive. What I enjoyed about this book was the fact the heroes were a bit different, even though the issues were the same. The two stories were short enough that these issues....dealing with human hatred, being raised as a lab experiment and lives filled with tragedy...were not drawn out.

I enjoyed Numbers as I enjoyed all the New Species books. I can't get enough of each character. They are the ideal men with so much extra. Just when I think Laurann Dohner can't possibly write much more about New Species... she does and I hope she continues to do so.

As always this series is wonderful! It's great to be thrown into a world you know and love to catch up with "friends". Laurann Dohner does not disappoint....ever! In this book we get to connect with not one, but two that we have connected with briefly before. The twist in this with the human capture was genius! My only complaint is that they don't last forever and eventually you come to the end...cannot wait for more!!

Story 14 about Mourn is one of my absolute favorite New Species books. Its a feel good love story about 2 people who have lost their partners in life and find one another. Story 15 is a continuation from Valiant & Tammy's story. We finally get to find out what happens to 927's mate. 2 great reads.

Dohner is loosing her touch. Boring story lines. The women all have daytime stripper names. The two short stories in one book was pleasant, but hardly made up for the dreadfully blah of the first story. The second story was better. Seems to be the same story over and over, with too many of the exact same sex scene.

Was nice to revisit the two numbered characters and see what happened with them. kept on turning the pages- finishing it same day I got it!!!
