although this is for SCD--which is trademarked and copyrighted so that publications are consistent with the SCD guidelines--I found a lot of recipes in here included ingredients that truly will not work for an individual who has health problems and underlying intestinal issues including dairy and certain sweeteners, even saccharine. If you need to restore intestinal health, then these key items truly are not on your "good foods" list. There are a lot of good recipes in here, but a person with intestinal health problems will need to understand their need for healthy fats, especially, another distinction not really made in this book.

The forward was good. I was looking forward to trying new recipes after reading Elaine Gottschall "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" which was excellent and I felt great. I have not been taking medication for years. I even contacted my Gastro doctor to take a colonoscopy to prove that I no longer had UC.
Wrong! After spending time consuming hours making these recipes and trying them I developed cramping, diarrhea and a flare one week ago. The recipes are too rich, uses a lot of garlic ( last recipe used 10 garlic cloves and onions). On YouTube and the internet it now says that garlic and onions are poisonous.) My recipes didn't come out as the pictures show. Olive oil should be used in salads as a dressing, never heated up because it turns rancid and causes cancer. Also gives advice on browning food which is associated with degenerative diseases as in Bruce Fifes book Stop Alzheimer's Now. Caramelizing food is the worse. What Fife also says "milk should never be cooked at high temperatures because the galactose glaciated with milk proteins, form AGEs.(advanced glycation end products, which age the body affecting other molecules, generating free radicals, oxidizing LDL cholesterol that collects in the arteries and promotes atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes damaging nerve tissue, including the brain...when you almost boil, scald the milk to make home made yougurt ., which is troublesome. Also Bruce Fife says never to use vegetable oils for cooking because they turn rancid and causes cancer. Throw them all out or use it up for furniture polish. Use only coconut, red palm oil and avacado for cooking.
I am very disappointed that I got this flare, I believe because of the recipes in this book. I would like to investigate why making homemade yougurt instructs us to scald the milk, if that causes AGEs according to Bruce Fife.
I am still keeping with the SCD diet and hope that my flare will go away and I'll be back on the mend.

I was really looking for some simple easy to make recipes for everyday eating... I figured with so many recipes it would cover that. I was wrong and most of these are to much prep for the time I have. I don't think i've used one recipe from it yet.

I have two family members who are lactose-intolerant. They cannot have lactose at all. One was disgnose with celiac disease, and is one of the 50% of celiac-suffereers that also cannot have diary. The other is a young boy who simply cannot handle lactose in any amount. Many of the recipes in this book call for their homemade yogurt, which is processed for a long time "to reduce the amount of lactose," not eliminate it. There are ways to make homemade yogurt with no lactose whatsoever, using coconut milk and honey, for instance, but they are not mentioned here. It also calls for "safe" cheeses which contain "very little" lactose, but do still contain lactose. There is almost nothing in here without dairy that an average American kid would not wrinkle his nose at and what was left were no-brainer recipes that most people who can cook would have figured out already. If you are one of those people who cannot have dairy items from the grocery store with fine-print disclaimers that their lactose-free products are only 99% lactose-free, don't buy this book!

I ordered this book based on other's reviews. This book is of no use to me, as my doctor told me I can not eat nuts. Not only do the recipes in this book not work with my colitis, but they all include incredibly expensive products in order to make the food. Almond flour is really expensive. If you suffer from colitis, this is not the book for you unless you are able to eat nuts.

As a food fanatic always looking for new ideas, I very much enjoyed the idea of healthy eating that this book espouses. I do not have any dietary problems, but ran across this book while researching how to eat well for friends with sensitive tummies. This book is perfect, providing an idea of a healthy diet for many types of food sensitivities. The recipes are easy, no-frills and full of great ideas for the kind of balanced, protein and veggie-rich healthy eating prescribed by food enthusiasts such as Michael Pollan. Moreover, with all the research coming out about wheat sensitivities and gluten allergies, this book seems timely, relevant, and accessible to veteran and new cooks of all types. I especially enjoyed the vibrant photos, wonderful anecdotes about Raman's family, and easy-to-deliver recipes. The full range of courses were also helpful. I loved the appetizers and dessert sections in particular. Innovative ideas of uses of almond flour also helped immensely. I made and enjoyed most the recipes in this book, and would definitely subscribe to this diet as a healthy, wheat/gluten-free alternative to traditional carb-rich American fare. I would love to see more books like this on the market!

I acquired a copy of 'Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet' a couple of months ago and had a great time reading through Prasad's intimate and often funny stories about the various dishes. I was intrigued by the instructions for making one's own yogurt (something that I enjoy every morning). I would love to be able to make my own yogurt from ingredients I knew to be natural, local and organic. I do not follow the SCD diet or have any kind of dietary restrictions but my partner avoids gluten and dairy. Many of the recipes in Prasad's SCD cookbook offer interesting gluten-free alternatives to things like bread and desserts - food groups we usually end up missing out on all together. What I really liked about the collection of recipes was the emphasis on natural ingredients, the culturally diverse assortment of dishes, and Prasad's personal anecdotes accompanying various recipes. The photography is beautiful, and the recipes are well laid out and easy to follow!

This cookbook is gorgeous and easy to follow. My wife and I use it to plan meals a few times a month. That neither of us has IBD really doesn't matter, since the specific carbohydrate diet is first and foremost about eating healthy, nutritious meals. I'm a mess in the kitchen'if I can find a way to ruin a recipe, it most assuredly will happen. But everything in the book is so well thought out, and designed so cleanly, that even I manage to prepare something edible. Delicious even. Our toddler happens to be a big fan of the wild salmon over vegetables dish.

I've recommended this book to two friends who have family members with Crohn's disease. Both have called to thank me for putting them onto this fantastic resource.

I would suggest any with any type of digestives issues to try out this cookbook and the many others Specific Carbohydrate Diet cookbooks available such as Every Day Grain Free Gourmet also sold on the store. This diet will make you feel better as well as giving your entire family as a whole a healthier lifestyle. And the best part is the recipes all taste so good that you don't feel like your on a "special diet". You do have to spend a good amount of time in the kitchen preparing meals from scratch but to me the end result is worth it. I personally have not felt this good living with Crohns disease in years! Finding the SCD diet has given my life the positive turn around I needed!

I've had the rare privilege of being tantalized by Raman's cooking for years. Despite the fact that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet limits him from using several ingredients that some would consider staples, he continually satisfies both the stomach and the palette. In short, this recipe book is a gift. Even if you cannot live in proximity to Raman or sample his fare from his own kitchen, you can still savor his recipes. I admit some bias: the author is my brother. However, no food like this existed in my family before Raman and any remaining partiality is easily overwhelmed by my adoration of good food. My nose and taste buds would have led me here regardless.

A new recruit to the delights of cooking, my interest in cookbooks is currently at it's peak. What I've wanted are light, simple meals with fresh, clean tastes and this book certainly delivers. I've found several interesting recipes in this book that satisfy my hunger(and my bias towards aesthetically pleasing, well designed books: after all it's well known that one eats with ones eyes first).
I'm fortunate that I don't need to be on the SCD diet(was recommended this book by a friend, who I invited to dinner and needs to be)but honestly, with food as good as this, the SCD-ers need want for nothing!
Thank you to the authors for giving us this book.

Raman Prasad has done it again! After Colitis & Me: A Story of Recovery and "Recipes from the Family Kitchen", Raman has put together a collection of simple but superb SCD recipes. I really appreciate the thought that has gone into crafting each recipe and love the international flavor of the recipes. Highly recommend the Sage Chicken with Portobellos, Ruma's Layered Pot Roast (divine!) and the Wild Salmon Over Vegetables. I am not on the SCD diet - but use his cookbook as a way of eating delicious, nutritious and healthy food. Thanks Raman - and I look forward to your next book!

I am a foodie with stomach issues, so thank goodness for this cookbook! Mr. Prasad has created a diverse menu, using easy-to-find ingredients and shown-off through great photos. And for the millions of us suffering from certain gastro ailments, we can stop worrying about every meal. Most important, the food tastes great. Thank you, Mr. Prasad!

I have a new favorite cookbook! It's "Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet" by Raman Prasad. Although the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) includes lots of great food choices, it doesn't allow for dining at my favorite Asian and Indian restaurants. Raman's culturally diverse recipes are bursting with the flavors of the ethnic cuisines I've been missing. One of my favorites so far is Kung Pao Chicken, which is wonderfully flavored with Raman's SCD Asian Sauce (hurray for a yummy soy sauce substitute!). And in my opinion the Beef Vindaloo rivals some of the best Indian restaurants in our town. I love, love, love this cookbook's mouthwatering photography; the compelling foreword and introduction to the diet; and the personal touch of Raman's stories about food, family, and friends. I highly recommend this great cookbook for anyone who wants to add some pizzaz to their SCD fare.

This recipe book provides extra recipes to go with the specific carbohydrate diet. I have found this diet has helped me become pain free after several months on it. The extra recipes allow me to vary what I eat so it is easier to stick to the diet. Thank you for sharing what you have learnt, much appreciated.

After being years on the Caveman diet, we were relieved to find out about the science behind the SCD. To find cookbooks already adapted to it was beyond my wildest dreams. I'm loving this book!!! The recipes we have made from it are delicious. It's fun to cook again!
My husband's Shepherd Pie ended up more like a thick stew, but he may have gone overboard in blending the cauliflower. It was still a wonderful thing to eat. Last night we used the Mango Salsa recipe. It had just the right amount of heat for both of us. (I like hot peppers and he cannot tolerate them.) I would give the book 5 Stars for the recipes.
Now, for the bad: When you get the book [and DO get it], wear gloves, cut it apart and slip it into see-through page protectors and snap them into a binder so you can safely use it in your kitchen. It's printed in China using what seems to be lead based ink!!! I've worked in the printing industry. The book smells like the old inks we used to use in the US prior to the switch to soy based inks. Dangerous anywhere ---- but, in the KITCHEN!!??? Really. What were they thinking!? Using a binder makes it not only safer but makes it easier to flip through and clean. I give the book a ZERO in safety as is. Thus, my 2 1/2 Stars, downgraded to a 2 for this serious issue.

Followers of the SCD often get asked the question, "What CAN you eat on the SCD?" Raman Prasad answers with a terrific collection of delectable, culturally diverse recipes that don't seem restrictive at all! The book clearly outlines the types of foods that are included/excluded in the diet and offers interesting, easy to follow recipes. Mouthwatering photos and anecdotes about the origins of the recipes are a great bonus. Get this book if you follow the SCD... Get this book if you just love good food!

I wanted to find a specific carbohydrate cookbook with both satifying home and holiday recipes. Raham Passad and friends and family even more than that including recipes from many countries, and particularly Asia. I even enticed my daughters-in-law to try specific carbohydrate cooking by giving this book to both at Christmas and they really like it! Buon Appetite!

This is my favorite kind of cookbook. The recipes are excellent and easy to follow. In addition, the stories and glimpses into Raman Prasad's family and background made the book so much more interesting.

This book is a great addition to your kitchen cookbook collection. When I am completely bored with the usual 4 dishes for my family, I've consulted Raman Prasad's new cookbook to add spice to the evening meal. My kids love it, and the dishes are easy and fun to prepare. It has even inspired our youngest to put on the apron and join in cooking. Thanks for keeping us all more healthy with delicious new recipes!

This is not only a great cookbook for following the SCD diet, but it has made cooking fun for me and has me trying different foods and spices. I love the cookbook and I have made at least half of the recipes so far. The layout of the book is easy to follow and the pictures that are included are next to the actual recipe. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone whether or not they are following the SCD.

I recently acquired this book and have tried a couple of recipes so far. My pet peeve with other cookbooks is having to buy several obscure ingredients that I'm unlikely to use again so I love the simplicity of the recipes and use of everyday ingredients. My favorite dish is the Lemon chicken which I foresee repeating often in the future! I've also ordered a second copy of the book for a relative with Asperger's syndrome who also follows a restricted diet and would love to try some of the foods in this book.

Fortunately, I do not have medical problems that require the specific carbohydrate diet, but friends and family members do. Instead of struggling over what to serve I feel like I can chose anything from this book and have it be a success. The recipes are simple, elegant, and delicious. I love the ease of this book and recommend it to anyone.

In Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Raman Prasad delivers help, hope, and amazingly delicious food appetizingly illustrated. Enjoyably readable, each section is preceded by vignettes, each recipe with history, reminding those using the SCD who suffer with IBD conditions that they are not alone. I highly applaud this book.

Some people here are critical about this book because it recommends using olive oil for high heat such as frying. I was in Walmart recently and saw that they had olive oil which was for sauteeing and frying. Looks like olive oil is also for high heat too.

I ordered this when my boyfriend was diagnosed with crohns disease. I was hoping to find gluten free baking recipes we would both like to eat. what you get with this book is a bunch of recipies that would obviously be grain free (omelets, meat dishes ans salads). what really killed it for me it that all baking recipes use almond flour only. doesn't sound too healthy to me. I guess this book would be great if you are just starting a fully no grain diet and you aren't used to cooking for yourself. if you want gluten free baking get any of Annalise Roberts books.
