Lots of good characters and some surprises. I. Like the way the author thinks. Straight forward writing. the scene runs through the minds eye easily. I will check for another book by Paul Levine soon.

I want to read more Jake Lassiter courtroom mysteries. He's a little rough around the edges, and he has a good heart along with some integrity. Also, he has a few good people to help him "sleuth around." This plot had twists and turns, and just when I thought the mystery was solved, an even more sinister plot developed.

Loved the twists and turns. Also appreciated the occasional Latin translation as I don't speek or write the stuff. I felt like counselor Lassiter was an old friend. Somewhere I must have read of him in a print edition.

An excellent legal mystery novel, but unlike book 10 in the Lassiter series, "State vs. Lassiter," "to Speak For The Dead," did not measure up in moving the story along at a reasonable pace.
The problem: detail, detail, detail with too many distracting asides. Yes, detail and asides are okay to give the reader - me - a fuller understanding of characters and locale.
While I read to the end, I found myself quickly scanning over many paragraphs in order to move on.
Though I suspected who the culprit might be, the end was surprising.
Quite a few situations within the chapters were predictable to me and yet they also had surprises.
Since this was Paul Levine's 1st book in the Lassiter series, book #10 showed much growth and refining of his writing style.
Levine's descriptions of Metro Miami - geography, people and political atmosphere were accurate and brought back memories of my childhood and college years there.

This is a good murder mystery. I enjoyed the story line, character development and the twists and turns. It held my interest and at times was difficult to put down( except to refresh my drink!). All in all a very likeable book.
