Love these books. I think I'm a little too old to still be reading them, but I started as a teen and can't stop! This one was really cool to read from Ali's point of view. Can't wait for the next ones!

I was obsessed with purchasing this book before finding it on the store. I don't buy many books online so I wasn't sure if the shipping would take a long time or not. I received my package in less than three days! In a book-lover's world, that is fast! Especially when you can't wait to read it. It was also wrapped nicely so that the paper cover over the hardcover book was not dented or folded in an unfavorable way. Glad I bought it!

This book is very interesting. It goes back to 7th grade, right before Ali's death. It looks into the fear she had; Courtney was going to try and switch places with her. However, Ali had a boyfriend named Nick who was never mentioned in any other books, as she never wrote about him in her diary. It also details the manipulative tactics Ali used on her friends. However, you can see why she was sometime cruel and can develop a good idea of the psychopath the real Alison was.
Pretty Little Liars #16: Vicious :: Pretty Little Liars #11: Stunning :: Pretty Little Liars #4: Unbelievable :: Pretty Little Liars #2: Flawless :: Pretty Little Liars #12: Burned

I really enjoyed reading this book from Ali's (Courtney's) perspective. I think it filled a lot of gaps from the other books and gave insight as to why she acted the way she did. It also showed that she was human, not as flawless as the other girls thought she was. Ali and Courtney are definitely the most interesting characters and this was my favorite book of the series. I hope she does another book from real Ali's perspective or just one that gives more info about the DiLaurentis family in general, as they are all interesting and have a lot of secrets.

I was a little disappointed by the storyline. I thought we'd get a glimpse of the Real Ali's life in the Preserve. Instead it was simply Pretty Little Liars, told from Ali's point of view. I probably won't be purchasing a PLL prequel book again.

“Sometimes, a family is like an ear of summer corn: It might look perfect on the outside, but when you peel the husk away. every kernel is rotten.”
I decided to start reading this series (I read the first one, but can't remember anything about it), right with the prequel to see how/why Ali acted the way she did.
"So she shut her eyes and channeled her sister. A beautiful bitch. A manipulative queen bee. The girl who'd ruined her life."
I surprisingly really loved Ali (Courtney) in this book (not a big fan of her on the show). Ali (Courtney) has had to put up with a lot from her twin that needs some help. Yet, the real Ali is the one that got Courtney sent away so that she could be the only girl in the family and get all the attention. That is until Courtney finds a way to become "Ali" and get the real Ali sent away to get the help she really needs.
The whole Ali, Courtney thing is rather confusing. I'll even admit that I had to re-read certain paragraphs again to make sure that I was getting everything right.
One thing that did bother me, was how Jason who apparently was super close to Courtney couldn't ever tell that she was the one pretending to be Ali so she could have a normal live. It just didn't make sense to me. Also, how can two parents really not tell their twins apart? When they obviously have some difference even if they are supposed to be identical.
“She'd make them wish they were never Alison DiLaurentis's friends in the first place. She didn't know how, and she didn't know when, but at least she had one person she could count on to help her carry it out. Together, they were going to make it happen.
Even if it killed her.”
Let's get back to Ali (Courtney) though and her new found friendship with Emily, Spencer, Aria and Hannah. While they are all supposed to be BFF, it felt to me like she was closer to Emily and Hannah from the start and just saw Spencer as competition, and I'm still not really sure what brought her and Aria together (did I miss something?). I really did like learning about the life Ali (Courtney) had made for herself and how she really was just trying to be a 'normal' young girl. I actually felt for her when it seemed like the other girls were keeping secrets from her, but I can also see it from their side about why they didn't tell her things. She can be extremely rude about it, and is extremely controlling of their friendship and will use anything to keep them all in line.
I will full admit that the ending still got me. I knew what was going to happen, but it didn't make it any less shocking, if anything it made it more shocking because of some other details we find out.
Overall now I'm really looking forward to finally starting this series properly!

If you follow my reviews, then you know how much I adore the Pretty Little Liars series. I have only read the first six or so books and still can’t get my hands on the next one. I did find Ali’s Pretty Little Lies when I went to an independent bookstore for my birthday. I just love the lightheartedness and feel of the series. It’s very easy to relate to the plot and characters.. There is a character for everyone! There will be major spoilers below, so go pick up the book (or series) so we can discuss.
The basis of Ali’s Pretty Little Lies is of how the Liars came to be. We start out with the story of the twins: Courtney and Alison, and their constant rivalry. I guess I am not far enough in the series to know about the whole Courtney situation. Did I spoil myself? I mean, I knew that a twin was in the equation because of some people who read the book, but I didn’t know that Courtney was impersonating Ali the whole time. If I ruined the rest of the series for myself by reading this prequel, then dang it.
Regardless of the spoiler, I loved this book. It was the kind of book that made me feel warm inside. Do any of you have those feelings with books? For me, that’s how I feel about the entire Pretty Little Liars series. But this isn’t a review on the series, it’s for the prequel. Basically, it’s a review of Alison and her manipulative views. Oops, I mean Courtney. No wait...Ali.
Courtney and Ali did not have a good relationship. Alison abused and tortured Courtney until she snapped. When Courtney attacked Alison, she was deemed as mentally unstable. No matter how much she tried to convince the Dilaurentis parents that Ali goaded her, they didn’t listen, She was sent to the Radley, a psych ward that treats patients horribly. I actually liked reading about the Radley because Radley Sanitarium and the patients (Mona, Spencer, Mrs. Cavanaugh ,etc) are my favorite story lines in the show. It was cool to read about the inspiration behind the version of Radley in the show.
When Courtney is released for a weekend home, she does something desperate. Courtney doesn’t want to go back to an institution. She know she not crazy, and she will do anything to prove it, including switching places with her twin. Courtney goes outside to talk to the Liars, and Alison is shipped away. It was incredible simple. When “Courtney” freaked out and screamed that she was the real Alison, the doctors thought that she had some major problems. Evem though she was telling the truth.
I felt a little bad for the real Alison because she didn’t deserve to be ripped from her family, but yet again, neither did Courtney, and Ali had been the sole cause of that. With the real Alison out of the picture, Courtney is free to rule Rosewood. And that is exactly what she does.
We all the know the next part. “Ali” creates a group of friends that were only chosen because they make her feel better about her self. She is manipulative and rude to all of them, but they fear her too much to say anything. In the book, Ali tries to control each friend with a different method. Let's go through some of the problems she causes.
Aria:Alison pays a huge part in ruining Aria’s family. One day on the street, Ali see’s Mr. Montgomery kissing one of his grad students that is certainly not his wife. Ali keeps waiting around for Aria to mention something, because “that’s what best friends do”. Honestly, if I was having major family problems, I wouldn't even tell my best friend. That’s just how I function. And it’s probably how Aria does as well. The thing was-Aria didn’t know about the affair. That means there was something really bothering her all the times that she was silent. Ali was so obsessed with getting Aria to admit the affair, that she completely disregarded her friend’s well being. To make it worse, Ali purposely led Aria to her father while he kissed another woman. I think this was a really crappy friend move. Ali should have had a heart to heart with Aria and been supportive. Ali feels that is Aria opens up to her, she will have power over her.
Hanna: Hanna’s main childhood struggle was overeating. She was on the heavier side of the scale and admits she has a problem. Alison holds Hanna’s secret of bulimic behavior over her head like a knife. Alison practically caused led Hanna to that point. She constantly jabbed at her weight and eating problems. Ali controlled Hanna by convincing her that she wouldn't fit in without her. I feel worst for Hanna in this book. She finally makes a friend with a new upperclassman, and Alison plots to change that. She pairs this new girl up with Hanna’s major crush at a party, but pretends she knows nothing about it. Hanna is already so insecure about herself, she doesn’t need any more pain.
Emily: Emily is just the sweetest. She is kind and friendly to everyone. No matter how much Ali puts Emily down, Emily’s feelings don’t change. She is in love with Alison. She is in love with a manipulative monster. When Alison finds this out, she uses it to her power. She slow dances with Emily, and even kisses her, just to make sure she remains devoted to her.
Spencer: now onto my favorite of the group. I love Spencer. I feel like I relate to her the most out of the group. Ali and Spencer have always butted heads over small stuff. Spencer won’t let herself be controlled by Ali. Ali has a plan to get Spencer back under her reign. Spencer’s crush is Ian Thomas, an upperclassman who happens to like Ali a bit. Whether this is a real crush or just a joke, it’s pretty weird. Ali and Spencer are both too young to go around kissing a guy like Ian. Ali’s plan involved a deal with Ian himself. She persuades him to kiss Spencer like he meant it, and he will get a kiss from Ali in return. Ian shows no problem with this, even though his girlfriend is Spencer’s older sister. Ali is planning to tell Spencer that she planned the kiss, so that Spencer would be eternally grateful to Ali. After the kiss, Spencer thinks that she stands a chance with Ian, and Ali doesn’t say anything. Later on, Ali threatens to tell Spencer’s sister about the kiss with Ian. With this threat, Ali regains control over the most rebellious of the group.
Now we see what a horrible friend Ali really is. She does different things to each friend depending on what hurts them most. She is a control freak. Her main task is controlling her best friends. Alison is just not a good person. The problem is that there are a lot of people that act like this in the real world. I know an Ali. I’m sure you know an Ali.
The only problem I really had with this book is the characters not acting their age-like I said with the Ian situation. When Courtney is released from the Hospital and comes to take her life back, she gets into a huge brawl with Ali. Courtney chokes her close to the point of death and drags her by her feet across the yard. I thought that this was a little unrealistic. These girls are in 7th grade! I guess it just proves the psychological problems of both the girls.
Besides that point, I loved the ending. It was so suspenseful. I was so scared that Courtney was going to pop out. And who was her accomplice in dumping her sister in the gazebo hole? Maybe it was Jenna? If you know-please don't tell me.
I actually thought is was a bit humorous that Ali’s plan didn’t work. She went through so much to get home from the Preserve, and plot, and ultimately kill her sister. And her parents sill don’t believe her. With Ali going back to the Preserve, what will happen next? I am so eager to continue the Pretty Little Liars series. I just got to the point when Ali came back to the Liars. She must have had some help from some people. On her way to the Preserve, she swears to get revenge on the four friends. This is basically saying that she becomes A. Makes sense, right?
Overall, this book was a great read and highly recommended for fans of the Pretty Little Liars series. I loved learning about how the friendship came together and the wretchedness of Ali. Check out my other Pretty Little Liars reviews to know more about the series!

I read Twisted and Ruthless without realizing I should read this book first. Since I finally had the urge to finish the series I checked this book out from the library. It has made me really excited for the series again. I never really understood the whole Ali/Courtney switch. It was hard to differentiate what as real and what was not. This book cleared that up for me and I am grateful.
The one disturbing takeaway I had from this book is that these girls are only 13\14 in the seventh grade. The relationships these characters have are very malicious for such an age. Also Ian's character is SUPER shady. Why would a sophomore in high school ever be interested in a seventh grader? Also the girls ogle college boys from the car,an even more scary age difference.
My one other negative is that I noticed the characters storming out of a conversation in order to tie up a chapter. The amount of times one of the girls stormed out/made an excuse to leave is abnormally high and ridiculous.
Being a PLL book, though, it was not fantastic necessarily, but super interesting in regards to the new perspective and information.

The "Pretty Little Liars" series is my guilty pleasure and I admit that I was delighted when this book became available at the library. It didn't take me long to finish it! However, I recommend you read all the books in the series.
This is the prequel to the series. Alison and Courtney DiLaurentis are identical twins. Each is an evil twin. The twins were initially close, as is common with twins. Over time, their twinship soured. They began by shoving each other; snitching on each other and having fights that escalated into violence. Courtney would insist that she was Alison and would sit in for Alison in her classes; when caught, she would keep insisting she was Alison. The twins' fights became so severe that at one point Courtney got into strangling Alison. That was the straw that broke the DiLaurentis' backs and cost Courtney her life at home. Courtney, then 9 was shipped off to an institution called the Radley where she served 3 years before coming home for a visit.
I admit that I really didn't like the DiLaurentises and thought they were indifferent to their son and the twins. I also thought they were complete dodos.
Courtney was left to languish at the Radley; she became, in her words forgotten. She was seldom visited and the DiLaurentises pulled up stakes by moving out of state in the hopes that Courtney's institutionalization will never become known to their new neighbors. Alison enjoyed a life of freedom and friends and family, including the twins' older brother. After 3 years of serving time, Courtney was finally taken home for a visit.
In a cataclysmic series of events, Courtney somehow manages to get Alison shipped off to the new institution, a place with the idiotic name the Preserve. You have to wonder about the senior DiLaurentises - parents of identical twins can tell them apart and one would think Alison might have told them something about their time together that only Alison could have known and not Courtney. Courtney even said that Alison was a tiny bit thinner and had bluer eyes. You come away with the impression that the DiLaurentises are dodos.
As Alison, Courtney basks in life outside of an institution. She has to watch her step very carefully. Her first step is to read and study Alison's diary. Once she read and memorized that diary, she drops Alison's clique like hot rocks. She plucks Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin and Emily Fields from social obsurity and makes them her satellites. The future Liars have no idea Courtney is masquerading as Alison. All seems to be going well for Courtney, but she had no idea that somebody else is onto her scheme and won't let her off the hook.
I couldn't help but feel bad for Courtney, institutionalized and being forgotten, left behind in such a place. It was hard not to be in her corner for a large part of the story. Like Real Ali, Courtney rules this new group of girls ruthlessly and is, yet at other times acting as a real friend. She is very secretive and understandably so, but yet feels she has the right to know every last detail about the Liars' lives.
Readers get to view the cast of characters from a different angle. Aria's father first becomes involved with a graduate student and this is the prelude to his accepting a teaching post in Iceland, where as we know Aria and her brother thrived. We also see Hanna's parents' marriage come to an end and her father, an unlikable and boorish man treat her like dirt when he meets a woman named Isabel with a rude and dislikable daughter named Kate who is Hanna's age. Spencer and her sister Melissa fight over boyfriends and Spencer shows her bird dogging skills in wooing and pursuing her older sister's dates. Emily reveals her crush on Courtney, whom she thinks is Alison. (The Liars don't know about Courtney). Courtney leads her on, but perhaps SHE is interested in Emily as well? Courtney is like a little buzzard, feeding on the carrion scraps of dead relationships that were initiated by her sister. She is a social scavenger. This is the book where we first see the Liars evolve into the characters they have since become.
Be sure to read the books in the series for this to tie together the series of events that led to the Pretty Little Liars and their pursuer, A. Perhaps Courtney might have known something about A. Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps Real Ali has some insights. You'll just have to read the series. You'll be glad you did.

I finally got my hands on this book and from the beginning I loved it. We get a glimpse of Ali and Courtney when they were young and were friends. Courtney eventually gets sent off to a mental institute for impersonating Ali countless times, though she claims it was because Ali threatened her to make her do it. At first, I was like good riddance, the girl is crazy but then I realize that Ali is pretty evil. I really felt for Courtney and I just wanted her to be believed by her family. Anyways, a couple years later, she manages to switch places with Ali, sending Ali to the new mental institute she was supposed to go to. This is when she befriends Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer. As the story progresses, I really come to like "Ali". She has her moments where she feels she needs to be really mean to feel powerful, but I guess that stems from the relationship she had with her sister. At times I loved her, but at times I hated her. When "Courtney" came home, I was so nervous for "Ali" and just wanted her to come out and tell her friends so they could help protect her. Overall, I really liked the book, it was a nice backstory on "Ali". The only thing that I did not like was that it was a bit unrealistic. If you have ever met twins, you would realize that they do not look exactly the same, you can always tell them apart if you know them well enough. It mad me angry that their own parents could not tell them apart, or even the brother, who was close to Courtney! In real life, they would never have been able to switch places without anyone noticing.

It's not very often that you find a particular series that you enjoy especially when there are like 15 books in the series if you count the new one to be released in July 2013. Normally like most they reach a point where they are kind of blah and repeating themselves etc. However, for me not the Pretty Little Liars series. I am head over heels in love with them and find it so amazing, that each book Sara Shepard will bring out a twist and turn that you least expected. In Ali's Pretty Lies, we read the tale of how it all began with two twin sisters Ali and Courtney. How one of them was viewed as crazy and the other normal and how Courtney was shipped off to the mental hospital , only to later switch during 6th Grade with Ali - leaving Ali in the MH. Then just before 7th Grade, there were two again and only one was left to survive - was it Ali or Courtney ? Which twin died that fateful night and which one lived?
Ali's Pretty Little Liars is like a prequel to the whole series and just a hint - pay careful attention to some of the names of the patients in the mental hospital as one will surprise you :)
Another great tale in the Pretty Little Liars series and I look forward to reading more in this series .

Let me just start of by saying, this is a fantastic read! If you've read all the Pretty Little Liar's books to date, then there aren't any spoilers But, you need to have read them all.
This is the back story of Allison and Courtney, twins. Both girls were best of friends when they were younger. Something happened to drive them apart. One of the twins overtakes the others identity, and becomes them and live their life as them. However, as life proves, nothing really goes according to plan. Courtney lives Alison's life as Alison. To make sure things go off without a hitch, Courtney dumps all of Ali's friends, and strike up friendships with Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily. All of the girls think that this is the real Ali, and will do anything for her. Courtney has it all figured out, well, most of it. She didn't plan on one thing happening. Someone knows what Courtney did, and won't let her get away with it.
What I really liked about this is that at times Courtney was a sympathetic character, and at times we root against her. We get to see Courtney having doubts at what she is doing, and how she is treating Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily. Then at other times, she rules her friends with an iron first. She knows all of their secrets, and uses them as weapons against the Pretty Little Liars and controls them. She actually gets offend whey they don't tell her things. She feels she entitled to know everything about them. It really was interesting.
We also see the same scenes in the past books, but from a different point of view. There are also somethings in this book that clears up some of the factors in previous books. I don't' want to go into detail, because I don't want to spoil anything. Let's just say that it was an interesting read. Some events are explained and some new events are introduced.
If you have read all of the PLL books, then this is must read for you. It adds such an interesting element to the series. If you start this, I can promise you won't be sorry. I know I wasn't.
The next book in the PLL series comes out June 4, 2013, and I so can't wait.

I am so addicted to Pretty Little Liars, although they have gone off the boil of late. The storylines are dragging on a bit too long but I am still hooked, hence the 5 stars given.
This book and "Burned" were probably the least interesting of the series in my opinion, but you must read this book to gain an insight into Ali/Courtney's behaviour. Told from Ali's(the fake Ali, really Courtney posing as Ali) point of view, we cover old ground, scenes from previous books are retold but from a different perspective. We learn that Courtney wasn't really that terrible a person, she was unloved and vulnerable from spending most of her life in an institution and needed constant validation which explains why she was always trying to manipulate her friends into doing what she wanted. At times, I felt genuinely sorry for her because she has had a terrible life but then when she was being mean to the other girls, i wanted to give her a slap. Both twins clearly have mental issues and as for the real Ali, I would really like to read her story next, please take note Ms Shepard!
Spoiler Alert
At the end of the book it's revealed that Ali had an accomplice when she murdered Courtney, somebody who's voice Courtney recognised before she died. It wasn't revealed who but we learned in "Crushed" that 'A' also has an accomplice. I believe the voice Courtney heard was Her boyfriend Nick who doesn't actually exist but is really 'Tripp', a boyfriend of Ali's from The Preserve who we have never met but has been mentioned several times. If this is correct, Could Tripp and Real Ali also be 'A'? I think Real Ali is definitely 'A' but i keep changing my mind on who could be her accomplice. I thought perhaps Kate, because she seems a bit shifty but now I think that's just a red herring, I think it's Tripp and he pretended to be Nick to lure Courtney into Ali's trap. Did anybody else think it was weird that nobody had ever heard of him and Ali hadn't written about him in her diary? The only other person who met him besides Courtney was Ian Thomas and we all know what happened to him, he was murdered by 'A's accomplice!
Can't wait for the next book 'Deadly' to come out!

I really enjoyed reading this book; however saying that, this book did not make me like Ali's character any better than I did before. At least, I finally understood why she was so mean to her best friends and everyone else, but honestly, there really wasn't any excuses for her actions. This was a nice quick book to read that delved deeper into the series and I do see it as a significant book to be read. I wish I would have read it later though, because now I know Ali's true killer.

In this installment of Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series, the story is told not from the point of view of the four girls (Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer) but from the point of view of the prettiest little liar of all, Alison (or rater, Courtney) DiLaurentis.
Courtney's full story of how she became the infamous Alison DiLaurentis was really interesting and caught my attention more than the story did in "Wanted." The book caught my attention from the get-go. Sara Shepard really knows when to turn on the heat and she keeps the heat on until the very last page. Now, the question that has been on everyone's mind since January 2nd: who is this mysterious accomplice of Ali's? Well as far as that goes, if Sara Shepard takes this shocking twist and makes it someone like Mona, I will be far more than disappointed. But this opens up questions. Could this person be Third A? The mysterious stalker that killed Tabitha and Gayle? Or is it someone who we don't even know yet, or someone we know well?
Sara Shepard raised the bar with this novel and I hope that Crushed (book 13) will touch more on this.

I absolutely loved this book. It really pulled you in and once you picked up the book you can't put it down. After watching the tv series multiple times I decided to give the book series a try. This was the first book I purchased out of the series and it made me want to read the other books right away. This book gave an inside look to the DiLaurentis family and made you feel a part of it. It shows what happened in "Ali's" perspective. I completely recommend this book to everyone who likes Pretty Little liars. But if you haven't read any of the other books or seen the series this may not be the place to start.

*SPOILERS* This book is my favorite novel of the pretty little liars series. Ali is my favorite character, so reading a novel all about her was interesting. I was a little confused about what really happened and when events took place, but this novel cleared things up. I can't believe Ali had someone with her that night!! I wonder who it is. I feel bad for Courtney:( Anyways, if u like PLL READ THIS NOVEL! if you haven't read PLL #8 Wanted DO NOT READ THIS BOOK! otherwise enjoy!

{my thoughts} - This book is helpful in only one way. It helps to clearly point out mildly what had happened the night that Alison/Courtney had died. This is basically an account of what had happened leading up to that night, the next day and so on. It helps as a means of giving closure to some of the readers who have been wanting to know what exactly happened that night. However, it also opens up more questions. I do have to hand it to the author. She certainly knows how to grip the audience and keep the mystery alive by only revealing minimal clues in each of the books.
{reason for reading} - I have been reading the series for so long, I was curious to find out Ali's point of view.

I'm very surprised. I really don't know how to describe this book. I really like it. It was very interesting and i was thrilled to follow the main events that lead to the death of Alison (or the real Courtney). The ending of the book is very tensely. If you haven't read it already, i highly suggest to do it.

This is a really well-written, interesting book. Once you start reading it, you can't stop, it's addicting, and you will always want to find out what happens next. It is very descriptive, and at the end you will want to start reading the rest of the series! Although, the storyline is different from the storyline of the TV show, if you like mysteries and drama then this book is perfect and I would highly recommend reading it!

This book is by far the most interesting book in the series! Before I read the book I didn't fully understand what had happened between Ali and Courtney. This book explains everything from the Queen Bee's point of view and that is awesome. Sara Shepard has done it again!!

This book was great! But....... I didn't like how it never said who helped Ali kill Courtney. It kinda sucked. Other than that, it was great! Don't listen to all of those stupid comments about not reading it until you read book 13. (Eye roll) I say you should read it first because it is stupid to read it after book eight and you would understand the original pretty little liars books more. Also, wouldn't you want to know how it all began? Wait!! It is nick because in book thirteen it says Tripp Maxwell and in this book it is nick Maxwell and "Courtney" says her and nick have been emailing a lot, and then she stares into space. Plus you can't email at the preserve. Oooooo! I bet you didn't take that srsly!!! :P

This is a very entertaining book, but if you have read the other books, it is a little redundant. And, if you have seen the TV series, it fills in some of the gaps.
HOWEVER--- Parents should note that this is a book about the inner dialog of a sociopath, and an ego-centric sadist. How this characters mind works is disturbing, and I would NOT recommend this book for a teenager. Teens do not have the mental maturity to evaluate that this is wrong, and could be influenced toward poor thinking, and poor choices. At least read the book before letting your teenager read it, so you can be aware of attitude and behavioral changes.
