"Don't get too comfortable. It's not over until I say it is"

The events of "Flawless" occur immediately after "Pretty Little Liars". The four girls meet after the funeral of their deceased friend and share some of what the mysterious "A" has threatened. They separate, swearing to keep each other posted...but when "A" returns to taunt them, they find themselves unwilling to reveal their deepest secrets. Aria has her eyes on a boy who used to be Hanna's boyfriend. Hanna's actions in the last book come back to haunt her, and she is forced to work in a burn clinic. Her relationships are all over the place--Mona is feeling left out, her dad reappears, her boyfriend dumps her. Spencer's relationship with Wren is proving to be more difficult than she thought...how can she balance all her AP classes AND Wren? And what about how her parents have been ignoring her? And Emily is more confused than ever about who she is when she meets a really hot guy...Toby, the stepbrother of Jenna.

After the intriguing and deliciously juicy "Pretty Little Liars" (and knowing I would need a light read for flying), I had to pick up Book 2. And I was impressed at how it balanced giving the audience more, answering questions while raising the stakes and giving us more to ponder.

The characters are really beginning to stand out. Last book, I mentioned how the four girls felt interchangeable at times. Not so here. Each girl has her own struggles, her own style, her own likes and dislikes. I love how each one makes excuses for hiding her secrets; I love how each one has a different take on who "A" is; I just love the diversity that is brought to the table.

This time around, I felt the secondary got even more time to make an impact. Melissa, Spencer's sister, really was a backstabbing bi-otch, while I saw a glimmer of compassion from her father. Sean got more interesting through his conversations with Aria, and I really admire Shepard for making Meredith a character and not just "the bad guy". Toby was fascinating; Mona was great.

The thing I find most impressive is how Shepard is able to push the story forward while still keeping it interesting. This is a mystery at heart; to keep the mystery of "A" shrouded for even this long is impressive. And not once does it feel forced. We get to learn more about "The Jenna Thing"--and there is a revelation about "The Jenna Thing" that I expected, but was still shocked to see. And yet, while we learn more about this mysterious event in the girls' past, not once was I bored or no longer interesting in reading more. Instead, I am more curious...I want to know who "A" is!

One complaint I do have is with consistency/continuity. The primary example was this one: Aria and Sean are out in his car making out. She gets a text from "A". Then we switch to Hanna's POV, and Hanna confronts Aria and Sean making out inside where the party is. How did Aria and Sean get inside and go back to making out so quickly after the text? I don't need a play-by-play report of what everyone is doing, but it just didn't seem to make sense that Aria would run back inside and suddenly start making out with Sean. However, this is small, and I only caught the one instance of it.

As with "Pretty Little Liars", I want to make a few caveats for parents and teenagers. There are a lot of mature situations in these books. Sex, violence, alcohol, drugs, etc. This isn't for a young teenager. Mature teens and adults will love the situations (and who knows, maybe parents can use these books to talk with teens about these serious topics?); they are intricate, well-done real-life situations. Younger teens probably won't understand it, and it might be confusing.

"Flawless" is a great Book 2. It somehow manages that balance of asking and answering questions and also isn't boring or redundant. I'm already starting on Book 3.

Also reviewed on my blog, the Vintage Bookworm. [...]

Oh. My. God! I can't believe I went through this book so fast! I mean, back in the old days when I really had nothing better to do (Ah, sometimes I miss those days where I could sit around and read all day and night! *sigh*) I would of finished this in about 2 hours or less, but now I can't do that. I have to split up times. But this went by surprisingly fast!

I love the TV show, and you know, the TV show does go by the books surprisingly well. I love reading through the book and reading the details of it--even though I saw it on TV--and going "Omg, I remember that!". But you know, like all book to movie/show adaptions there are some parts that are majorly different. Like something that happened in this book that certainly has not happened in the show and I really hope it doesn't or I'm going to cry! I'm not going to tell what, though!

The details are awesome and so is the writing. Sara Shepard is awesome. End of story! The book is in different points-of-view, if you've watched the TV show, you know which four girls it is. =P If not, then Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily. Most of the time I absolutely hate switching points-of-view, but in Pretty Little Liars I don't. I LOVE it!

I'll finish a chapter super fast and then can't wait to get back to a certain someone's chapter, depending on what happened in her chapter. If that makes sense at all!

It's hard to describe this series, I mean, it's light and fluffy but at the same time it's sooo mysterious! I'm always trying to figure out who A is. It drives me nuts! But I know once I do figure it out, I'm going to hate it and be really sad. Do any of y'all think that we know who A is, and maybe have it in the back of your brain somewhere, but just really can't spit it out? That's how I am. Especially with the last message A left for the next novel. Ahh!!

Overall, I'm really loving this series. Book AND TV show. If you are a huge fan of the TV show, fill in the times between episodes by reading the books! Holds back your lust a little bit. Just a little bit, ha-ha.

I admit that I love chick lit and I also love a wickedly riveting series, such as the Pretty Little Liars Series.

Dramatis Personae

Alison "Ali" DeLaurentis: a bright, popular girl who led a clique of other rich, indulged girls. The others are more like satellites than actual friends as they know Ali is a powerful ally to have. They drop designer names every chance they get. They live in Rosewood, a suburb of Philadelphia on the Main Line. Ali, known for insidious cruelty has plenty of secrets. So do the other girls, all of whom have good reason to want Ali to do a permanent disappearing act.

Aria, an attractive, athletic brunette who was glad to escape Rosewood for Iceland. She has a yak-fur bag to which she is inordinately attached. Her father accepts a teaching position there and for 3 years, Aria and her younger brother by 2 years Mike, learn Icelandic and absorb Icelandic culture. Unlike Mike, Aria wants to remain in Iceland. She has a painful non-Ali related secret - she caught her father cheating with another woman. Once back in town, she picks up an older man in a bar and once school starts, discovers that her Ezra is her English teacher! She knows how to play to get an A! She also stalks her father's new yoga teaching girlfriend and let's just say that she is not interested in taking a yoga class.

Spencer, the grind who sputters at the drop of a designer hat. She earns As and other academic plaudits for real. She has long been eclipsed by her favored older sister, Melissa and when she steals Melissa's boyfriend for the second time, her cold-hearted family ostracizes her. To make a bad thing even worse, they even cancel her credit cards without telling her and stop inviting her to meals. Melissa, a pompous Drama Queen has long reveled in her Favored Daughter status and you just want to kick her in the shins.

Hanna, the former fat girl now turned femme fatale is the weakest link in the chain. Bulimic and insecure, she has now linked forces with another social outcast. Together, they drop designer names and flaunt fashion like it's going out of style. Hanna's relationship with her divorced mother is more like business associates than family. (Hanna's mother works for a company called McManus & Tate, which sounds like a spoof of the advertising firm of McMann & Tate in "Bewitched" [1964-72]). Her father's fiancee Isabel has a daughter Kate who is Hanna's age and Hanna feels that Kate has replaced her. She does not have a good relationship with her father either and engages in illegal activities. In this installment, she gets drunk at some fancy party and steals her former date's father's car and let's just say that car spent a lot of time in the shop after Hanna got through with it. Hanna's mother has a rather unique way of settling the problem that is far more complicated than covering for Hanna when Hanna stole jewelry from high end stores. To make a bad scene even worse, Hanna's mother locks her out of the house one night after she and Hanna acted a fool at a hotel where Hanna's father invited Hanna for a weekend.

Emily discovers that love comes in the most unexpected places. She discovers her family's true colors of bigotry as she also learns some things about herself. She has to be ready to stand by her convictions, even though she places herself in danger.

The girls are ALL in danger and maybe even Jenna as well. Ali has been discovered murdered and the case has been opened once again. The girls are all on high alert as to cover each other and figure out who killed her and if this mysterious stalker called A is the one responsible.

A is a mysterious shadow figure who haunts the girls, sending them anonymous text messages and e-mails. A outlines their daily activities and gives them lists of instructions, which, if not carried out will result in death at worst, danger and exposure at best to the surviving satellites.

The girls band together after Ali sets the wheels in motion for the traumatic incident with devastating repercussions they call "the Jenna Thing." Shortly after the Jenna Thing, Ali disappears and the girls as well as the townspeople are determined to find her. A Rosewood Alum, now a police officer hounds the girls once Ali's case has been reopened. This officer takes a harder look into the case when someone the girls knew well becomes casualty.

Somebody called A knows more about Ali and her satellites than they could ever imagine. A texts and e-mails them, telling them where they've been and what they've done. A also blackmails them. The question is, who is A? One of the girls? Someone close to Jenna? A neighbor? An intrusive officer?

This is a deliciously wicked and riveting read that will keep readers bound to the last page. You really feel their pain when their own families ostracize them, as in Spencer and Hanna's case. Bigotry crops up again in this installment. Melissa and Spencer vie for the affections of one of Melissa's classmates, who is Anglo-Korean. Emily discovers that she, too could find love in an interracial relationship.

The overplayed 1983 song "Every Breath You Take" by the Police could be the soundtrack for this series.

*In the first chapter, Spencer smokes a Parliament. When that smoking scene is introduced in the previous installment, the coffin nail in question is a Marlboro. Readers will catch these things.

make me believe
First off, I have to say, so far this series rocks!! Like the first one, I read this one in pretty much one sitting, and that's very rare for me. I was glued to every page, and that's a sign of a very talented author.

This picks up right where the first one leaves off. A is still sending threatening messages to Hanna, Spencer, Emily and Aria. However, in this book, the messages are a lot more personal and threatening. A is threatening to tell everyone's secrets not only to each other, but to their family and friends. A even tells on "You hurt me, and I'll hurt you back." For me, that's a very interesting sentence. It makes you wonder not only who A is, but what did the girls do to A to get A so mad at them, mad enough to either kill Allison or fake her death, and kill someone else and say it's Allison. That's not a spoiler, that happened in the first book.

In this books, we get some answers, but as in all good books that will keep the reader hooked, there are more questions. Answers that lead to questions, ya gotta love it.

I like how the girls have depth to them. It's not the same old characters that are re-hashed in the books over and over. As we lean about them, we can't help to care what happens to them, and in some cases, feel sorry for them. In a series of flashbacks (more on that later) we're finally getting to know Allison, and know that she's not a very nice person. I was wondering why she'd want to be friends with Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna. She has/had strange control over them, much like a bully has control over those they bully. Allison is mean, rude and Nasty to her friends, and knows all of their secrets. Allison uses those secrets to hurt her friends. She's a very interesting character that I can't help but to wonder about.

I don't really want to go into detail on what happens to the Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hanna, it could lead to to many spoilers. If you've read the first one, then you pretty much know what's happening to them. In this book, we see some consequences of their actions, and see what makes them tick. Speaking of characters, we get to see what the home life is for each of the girls in the book. For me, that's adds a lot of depth to them and makes them seem real and life like. There is also some High School drama thrown in the mix. For me, that both are examples on how much control Allison and A have over their friends. It seems that A had it out for Hanna in this book.

I love how we really don't know who A is. We were given some clues on who it might be, but I don't want to say to much, just so I don't spoil it.

Usually, when an author deals with the past and present, it's set up so one chapter is in the past, and one chapter is in the present. That's a huge pet peeve for me. That being said, Shepard does it exactly right. She flows in the past and the present seemlessly. No breaks, it's a nice flow that goes on at a steady pace.

I can't say enough good things about this series. I've been hooked since the first book, and I can't wait to start the 3rd one in the series. This is a series I'd say go ahead and start. Just plan on getting nothing done for the rest of the day, because you'll be hooked like me. If you start it, I can promise, you won't be sorry. I can' wait to see how this series plays out.

Kuddos to Sara Shepard!!

A great series with some suspense but with a YA twist. To review this series, I am going to group the books in sets of 3. As I think, that reviewing each book may be a little excessive.

Reading a series basically in a row - I have a fear that there will be reptition in the story as the author tries to remind the reader what happened in previous books. My thoughts in regards to this series, yes there is repeating of facts in each book, but not to an extreme. As I read them one after another, I was a little annoyed, but if I had read them with space in between it probably wouldn't have hurt to be reminded of some of the events that occured in previous books.

These characters are funny and endearing - I grew to love them and hate them all at the same time. Each one was unique, but I could really see Ali as the glue that kept all these girls connected. As the books continued I loved trying my hand at figuring out not only who A was, but also who the killer was. At the close of book 3, I had some thoughts, but my guesses were less than educated!

I would recommend this series to young and old alike - a great summer read. I have enjoyed going from one book to the next trying to find out the who dun its and their motives.

I have unofficially decided to read one easy YA series or set of books each summer, so last year was Gossip Girl and this year it was Pretty Little Liars.

Flawless is the second book in the Pretty Little Liars series. It starts out right where Pretty Little Liars left off, except for a preface that includes a couple juicy secrets! Note: Don't read if you have not read Pretty Little Liars, unless of course you don't mind spoiling a little bit of the book!

Rosewood, Pennsylvania is mourning the loss of Ali DiLaurentis after her body was recovered in her old backyard. Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily all meet up at the memorial for Ali and discover that all four of them have been receiving messages from A. No one knows who A is and they are desperate to find out. At the memorial service they are all shocked to see Toby the brother of Jenna, the girl who had the terrible accident. They all wonder what he could be doing back in town, and could he be A? As for the rest of the girls lives they are as scandalous as ever. For Spencer she's starting to slip from the stress of life. Her parents are still unbelievably mad at her for making out with her sister's boyfriend (whom she's still seeing), her grades are starting to slip and the notes from A are threatening to unleash secrets that could ruin her life. Aria is just as bad off. Her steamy affair with her teacher has been called off, but now she's into Hanna's ex-boyfriend Sean. While her relationship is heating up, her parent's relationship cools off and A is anxious to slip the secret. Emily is still questioning her sexuality and her swimming career. Hoping to get her old life back she takes a certain someone to the big Foxy dance, but he could be more danger than good. Last but not least, Hanna is trying to get her ex back, but she has a little competition. Also, her dad comes back into the picture and with him comes his evil soon to be step-daughter. All this drama can't be good for a small town, but these four girls don't care. They'll do whatever it takes to keep their secrets safe.

This book was a thrilling follow-up to Pretty Little Liars. It answers many of the questions that the reader is asking at the end of the first book. We find out about Jenna and more about the lives of Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily before Ali disappeared. This book is the perfect mix of murder, rivalry, romance, and mystery. Perfect for any girl who's ever wondered what those "it" girls have to hide! The series becomes even more enthralling because as soon as one question is answered another appears. Especially the question of who is A! Sara Shepard has definitely got me hooked on the series and eager for more.

(spoiler ahead)

after their best friend Alison disappeared mysteriously, Emily, Aria, Spencer, and Hannah start receiving threatening messages by someone who goes by -A. But it couldn't possibly be Ali herself. She's dead!

The messages keep on coming, bringing the girls together and wondering who they could be from.

After analyzing the Jena Thing one was and another, the girls figure that the most obvious person who would want to blackmail them is Toby, Jenna's stepbrother. So why couldn't Toby be -A? [spoiler #1]

I absolutely love this series! It's a great break from all the paranormal and urban fantasy books I always read. I have always loved a good mystery, and this -A mystery is a good one!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spoiler Alert!
spoiler #1- Well 1st off, because I watch the show (and I feel the need to mention that its nothing like the books) I know that Toby is not -A. why? Well, IDK, he just seems genuinely nice. Plus, he dies at the end of Flawless O.O I did NOT see that coming!! And so, after Toby dies, -A is still texting the girls...so now they know it wasn't him.
And thanks to watching the show, I have a strong suspicion that -A is Jenna...or has something to do with it. But IDK for sure; it's just a hunch.
I honestly didn't think book two would be better than book one. But I proved myself wrong. This is the best YA series I have read in a long time, and can not wait to start book three.
I would have to say Aria is my favorite in this book. She had a fling with her teacher in book one. And in this one there are hints there might be something more about them in book three. She also is dating Hanna's ex-boyfriend, Sean, which Hanna is not happy about.
Hanna in this book struggles to find herself and where she fit's in. She steals, takes pills, smokes, and is friends with a bad girl names Mona. Which their friendship fades after Hanna keeps secrets from her. Hanna is also having a hard time with her dad's new family. Her dad hasn't talked to Hanna in four years, but then comes back into Hanna's life after Hanna is caught stealing. Hanna's step-sister, Kate is out to get and make sure that Hanna isn't part of her new family. And Hanna and her mom aren't close.
Emily has mixed feelings about her girl friend Maya that she kissed in the first book. Emily is attracted to her still, but she is worried about what other's will say about her being gay. So she tries dating guys. She starts a fling with Toby, who in the end they think is "A" who is sending them messages about the secrets they told Alison, but Alison is dead, and Toby's ending is tragic and shocking.
And Spencer, she has the most going on. She has secrets about The Jenna Thing only her and Alison knew, and it weighs on her not telling anyone. She also has a hard time with her family who favors her sister more. Spencer also stole her sister's boyfriend, Wren from her only to have her sister steal him back and dump him to get back at Spencer for stealing him.
These are awesome books, intense drama, and an amazing read!
Not that that's a bad thing. I actually like it when the author makes the "whodunnit" a hard one to solve- it makes me more interested in the book. I picked up the 2nd volume of PLL after devouring the first one literally overnight, and ended up doing the same with this book.
This volume finds the fab four dealing with the aftermath of Ali's funeral and the follow-up with their own personal problems. Emily has found a new suitor to try to take her mind off of Maya, a new suitor who happens to be none other than Toby- the brother of Jenna... as in the person they used as a scapegoat for "The Jenna Thing". Spencer is still trying to regain her family's trust, even as she tries to continue her secret relationship with Wren. But is she really into him for the right reasons or is she merely trying to one-up her sister? Aria is also trying to regain someone's trust as she tries to get back into her forbidden crush's good graces. And then there's Hanna, who tries so hard to stay on the good side of popularity. Poor Hanna, who finds herself falling back into her old habits and insecurities. That's enough to drive any group insane, however the malevolent force known only as "A" won't rest until their twisted revenge is complete!
I still love this series with a passion. The second volume followed much of the same formula as the first book did, but was still entertaining. My only complaint was that the families of each girl seemed a little bit too evil & unforgiving. Hanna still has problems with her dad & evil soon to be step-sister. Spencer's sister & family refuses to give her the time of day unless it is to hurt her. Emily's mom doesn't want her to see Maya or give up on swimming. Aria's family is relatively normal by comparison, and her's is almost just as twisted in their own ways. At some point I kind of got tired of seeing *every* family being so dysfunctional & I really wished for some sort of normalcy to occur in order to balance everything out. The mystery of A does a lot to keep me interested, but I have to admit that if it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't have read the book so quickly. (Only so much mean people I can take at one time!)
4.9/5
This is the second book to the Pretty Little Liars series. This book continues to follow the lives of Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily. They have all been getting threatening notes from ~A. At first they thought A was their friend Allison Dilaurentis until they uncover her body in her old backyard and now the backyard of Emily's "friend" Maya. Aria is still crushing on her new English teacher that she met in Iceland. And Hanna is in the popular crowd obsessing over being flawless.
All best friends have drama. It's nothing you can run away from because; it's always going to be there. The book Flawless by Sara Shepard is all about 4 ex-best friend's stories. Sara Shepard did a very good job of writing this book, it was very interesting and I never wanted to set the book down!
Flawless is the second book in the series. I would advise you to read the first book, Pretty Little Lairs, before reading this one. It takes place in Rosewood, Pennsylvania. Flawless focuses on four different girls named Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily. They were best friends until Ali, the fifth best friend, went missing. Workers found her body buried underground three years after she went missing. The girls have all been receiving messages from "A." At first they all thought that "A" had to be Ali because "A" was saying things that they told Ali and no one else. Throughout this book the girls start to talk again and find out that they were all receiving messages. They told each other to tell one another when they got new messages but, no one did because it was about personal things. Also Hanna's dad came to Rosewood after not speaking to her for more than 2 years. This causes much drama and, the ending was very good! You'll just have to read and find out what happens to the girls.
Flawless is written for teenage girls. This is because it has so much drama and mystery. I know that this is a mystery because the girls are all trying to see who "A" is. This book is a mature version of the Clique series.
As I said before the Clique series is similar to this book. This is because in both stories there are 4 girls. These books have different plots but, are still alike in some ways.
Flawless has much strength and few weaknesses. One strength this book has is usually at the beginning of books it is boring but, this one gets right to the drama and action. Another is the word choice in the book. This is because whenever she was describing something I felt like I was there. A weakness in this book was at times it got a little boring but, if you just keep on going it gets better again. A second weakness in this book is at times it can get a little confusing. This doesn't happen often but, when it does I would advise you to read it again.
In conclusion I really enjoyed this book. It was hard to set down the book once you started reading. You should only read this book if you like girly books that have a lot of drama and action.
This book makes absolutely no sense to me. The girls are terrified over A when A only sent maybe two text messages the whole book. Hanna getting bent out of shape over A telling her dad about "The Jenna Thing". Really? Ali was the one who shot the firework and she was on the house. How was it her fault? You're going to let someone blackmail you over something you didn't even do. In what warped world do they so things like that? I don't get what the hype is about these books. In my opinion they just suck.
In Rosewood, Pennsylvania, live four girls: Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Spencer. Flawless, by Sara Shepard, shows their lifes, and what can happen when life gets going. When their best friend Ali disappears, things change. Their group of friends separates. A few years later, the girls start getting messages from a mysterious person named A. Whoever A is, she/he knows them well, and is forcing them to do certain things, or their secrets will be spilled.
Flawless is not your normal chick-flick about high school girls and their love lives. It's up to date in technology, and stays in touch with normal high school activities and personalities. The plot lines stay juicy, and there is always something happening. The reason for that is each chapter flips back and forth between the girls, showing how each of them is taking in life. That gives you more ways to think about some of the same things.
Not quite everything was great, but close. Because Flawless switches between girls every chapter, you can get confused about you are talking about. Also, some of the characters are very similar in personality, so you can classify them as the sweet one, the aggressive one, the good girl, the rebel, and things like that.
There isn't only Flawless. This is the second book in Sara Shepard's series. The first novel is Pretty Little Liars, the third is Perfect, and there is Unbelievable still to be released. This is a series that you will never get bored with.
This book did not disappoint. It was just as good as the first. Just the right amount of mystery, drama, and suspense. I loved the tv show, but so far I love the books just as much. The characters development is great in this book. We get a little more of a glimpse in the lives of our four main characters. I can't wait to read the next book.
I am addicted. I absolutely love this series so far! In the first book, everyone thought A was Alison and now they think that A is Toby. I've been watching the TV show along with reading these books as well and I've probably come across things in the show that I didn't know happened in the books yet, but I don't think anything has been spoiled for me a single bit. I'm enjoying both mediums so far. I was kind of shocked at how soon the stuff with Toby came about in the books though. Thankfully, no one has found out who A is in the book or TV show. The characters have a lot of depth and I feel like I'm getting to know these girls very personally as if they were my own friends. Also, I kind of use the people in the TV show whenever I read, even though their descriptions in the book are a bit different. It doesn't take away the awesome characters' personalities though. I really love the names of the chapters because they're all sassy as if I'm reading Alison's or A's diary or something. I also love the fact that each chapter is in the perspective of either Spencer, Aria, Emily, or Hanna. That's how you get to know each character so well, I think. This second book really carries on the mystery of what happened to Alison and why a person who calls him/herself A is blackmailing and harassing these girls, but there's many, many more books in this series so of course we've just hit the tip of the iceberg. I'm enjoying chipping away at it though and can't wait to start reading the next book!
Ali, who was the main suspect for A, because I mean how else can anybody know that much about the girls, is DEAD, ok wait, now who else could possibly be A? Introduce new suspect #1: Toby Cavanaugh aka creepy stalker kid who stares at you. The first thing you learn is what The Jenna Thing actually was. If the girls were caught for what happened, they would have been in a lot of trouble, but someone confessed.........Toby! Now why would he do that, was it because Ali had a dirty little secret on him, and if so, is he A?, was he Ali's killer? With Toby back in town, the girls are starting to think that he just might be. Meanwhile, as the girls drift apart again, they have to deal with more notes from A, and crap, A is HORRIBLE. No one, not even a fictional character should have to go through this abuse. The things A (Toby?) does in this book will make you cry and hate A even more than you did before. No, A isn't revealed in this book, but there is another dead body discovered-could it be Maya, Aria, Emily, Spencer, Hanna, Mona, Jenna......?- and you won't know until you read it!
To start off with, this series is much better than what I've read of the Gossip Girl series. It's more indepth, the characters have each a conscience, their actions have direct consequences, and they inspired pathos. Four privileged young women hide a deep secret. They are just fine going about their lives until they started receiving strange text messages from a mysterious person who only refers to themself as "A". "A" seems to know way too much about each girl- private, personal stuff, as it happens.
The last novel was an introduction to each of the characters. Aria continues to shoulders the burden of the secret of the last novel, Spencer continues to carry on a love affair with her sister's ex-boyfriend, Emily meets a boy that she sort of likes despite her sexual identity issues, and Hanna tries to turn over a new leaf, but, as usual, "A" threatens all that.
I'm begining to suspect Spencer. She witnessed Toby's response to The Jenna Thing, and she discussed what happened while all the other girls were asleep at the slumber party with Ali.
In the last book, I hardly sympathized at all with Hanna, but in this book, we're getting deeper into her psyche and relationship with her parents and how it affects all the other relationships in her life. I began to totally identify with her- can't please her parents, they're angry with her, but don't know the whole story and they won't listen to her side of the story, she can't do anything right. The portion of Spencer's story left me shaking my head at the end. A portion of Aria's story arc is done, but the original one, the one with her teacher, is promised to spice up. Emily's problems with her ex-boyfriend are going to explode in the next book, I'm sure.
Each character is very unique and has their own voice and problems. I think Sara Sheperd is doing a great job with the writing on this. It's like Harry Potter suspense- I can't wait to see how it ends!!
May contain some spoilers!!
This was good. I thought we was getting somewhere with this one, in finding out who -A, was!! BUT NO.. I thought it was toby. I was sure it was def toby when him and Emily was in the car... with the things he was saying.. NO it wasn't.. and why? Because Toby died. And left a note. Toby had a secret too. One only Spencer and Ali knew. And then Toby thought everyone knew.. But they didn't until AFTER he was dead. He commited sueacide. wow. Then there is another text.. -A, whoever this is, knows EVERYTHING about these girls. I can't believe about Aria's mom... wow. Her dad totally sucks. And Hanna, poor hanna. Really wow. Then Spencer falls in LOVE with Wren... WHO was her sisters boyfriend. Who is now apparently back with her sister Melissa. That's just weird..
All i want to know is... WHO IS A?
This book picks up right where the first book leaves off. You can understand Aria's relationship wih the men in her life. Hannah's relationship with her father and her absentminded mother are the source of all her problems with food and how she sees herself. Mommy buys her whatever she wants so she doesn't have to bother with her. Spencer's parents are always comparing her to her sister. They think her sister walks on water, even though there really isn't anything special about her. Her parents' reaction to Spencer's incident with Wren was a bit over the top. No wonder she goes after all that's Melissa's. And as for Emily's racist mother, who has every second of the rest of her life planned out for her. She needs to actually sit down and hear what her daughter has to say. The story continues to unfold, and you get more in depth with the secrets (very very disturbing secrets). The story is alot of fun. There are alot of twists and turns, and you really start to wonder who A is. Just when you think you may have figured it out, YOU'RE WRONG. As I said in my review of the first book, I wouldn't recommend this book to the younger crowd, but certainly the older crowds. There is still all of the same age-inapropriate things that were in the first book. This book talks about rape and drug use as well as the sex, smoking and drinking.
Flawless immediately begins where Pretty Little Liars ends: the afternoon of Ali's funeral service. Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hanna are still stunned that their former friend's body was found. The police have reopened the case and now consider it as homicide. Each girl admits to receiving texts and e-mails from "A" and agree to disclose if any more are received. All four have secrets that they have kept from each other and the only other person who knows is Ali. Now Ali is dead and that leaves no explanation for how "A" knows all about these secrets.
Flawless goes more in depth with each character and her back story. Spencer constantly feels inferior to her older sister, Melissa. When Melissa catches Spencer with her boyfriend, her parents shun her and barely speak to her. They are nonchalant about Ali's death and hardly acknowledge Spencer's grief. Feeling ousted by her family, Spencer resumes her relationship with Wren and soon her perfect facade begins to crack. Spencer also feels guilty about what really happened the night the Jenna thing occurred, but remains silent. Her silence may eventually put her friends in harm's way.
Hanna is desperately trying to hold it together. She no longer feels like the "confident, popular" Hanna, but more like the "insecure, overweight " Hanna of years ago. Hanna continues to make poor decisions and tries to live with the consequences. Her dad is back in her life, but he comes with his soon-to-be bride and Hanna's nemesis, step-sister Kate.
Emily is trying to understand her feelings for the new girl, Maya. She begins to avoid Maya and soon finds herself on a date with someone she never considered dating potential. She's also dealing with her ex-boyfriend's hatred after he caught Emily kissing Maya.
Aria is trying to get over her feelings for her teacher. She finds a new love interest, but isn't quite sure what to expect. In the meantime, she's also carrying the burden of the real reason why her dad moved her family to Iceland and realized the problem hasn't gone away at all.
So, you think each girl has enough to deal with, right? Well, apparently "A" doesn't think so. "A" not only continues to send texts and e-mails, no, he/she has upped the ante and begins leaving notes on their car windshields, in their textbooks and at school. "A" is carrying out his/her threats and forces the girls to do the unspeakable to protect their secrets.
Honestly, I can't believe how much I like this series! It's very quick reading and the more I learn about each girl and their secret, the more I want to know "A's" identity. I've narrowed it down to two people, so we'll see if I'm right. "A" definitely turned up the heat at the end of Flawless, so I can't wait to see what happens in book 3, Perfect.
Flawless is a book about four girls(Spencer, Hannah, Emily, Aria) who are trying to figure out who "A" is. "A" has been sending all the girls weird texts that tell secrets only their dead BFF Alison knew. At first, everyone thinks it's Toby. Toby was Jenna's step brother and everyone thinks he killed Alison and that he is "A". Untill Toby dies. The texts keep coming and the girls are scared their secrets will be told. "A." is threatining the girls that they will tell there secretes if they don't do what "A" wants. The girls must figure out who "A" is and who killed Alison. This book is so adicting. You never want to stop reading it. They never say who "A" is. You always think it will say in the next book, but it doesn't. Ypu keep buying her books because you want to know.The only thing wrong is the books get kind of slow in the middle. But other than that, this is a truly amazing book that was done very well.
After reading the series as a whole I can say that Flawless is one of my least favorite in the series, but isn't by any means un-enjoyable. It centers very much on two things, The Jenna Thing which I'm glad we FINALLY get to find out about and Foxy (a ritzy fundraiser event). I guess I was just hoping for more plots. I started to get sick of hearing about these two things.
As with the first book the 4 girls deal with their own personal problems but are still being threatened by A. In this book I found Emily's friendship with Toby (Jenna's brother) pretty interesting. Was he someone she could trust or not? This plot created some great suspense especially towards the end of the book.
While this book wasn't one of my favorites in the series it laid a lot of groundwork for the upcoming books.
Let me just start off by saying that the TV show is WAY better than the books. I am kind of shocked by that, and honestly disappointed. Flawless was so shallow and annoying and overall it just made me angry. Will I read the rest of the series? Yes, because I hate starting things and not finishing them. Also, I am curious about how the book series is going to progress differently than the TV series.
The novel picks up from the very last scene that the first book stopped at. Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily are at their former bestfriend's funeral...Ali DiLaurentis, who was the manipulative queen bee of the group. However, even though Ali's dead, the four girls are consistently getting e-mails, letters, and texts from someone named "A". This anonymous person knows deep dark secrets about each girl, and is now threatening and blackmailing them with this information.
Sara Shepard's novel is very interesting and never left me bored once. With alternating points of view of each of the four girls, each one has a different story and personality, yet they all harmonize each other. I sympathized with some characters, and grew a strong hatred towards certain other minor characters in the book. Each one has secrets the others don't know about, that unlike in the first book which was sketchy, are starting to get finally revealed!
While the story seems realistic with every-day problems that some teens face like cheating parents, bad breakups with boyfriends, eating disorders, etc. there was one thing I kept thinking that felt really wrong. All of the parents in the book! They seem so heartless and uncaring, and I know even when parents are infuriated with their kids for a mistake they did - they still love them! I find it hard to believe that the parents would be this mean and unforgiving for a mistake their daughter made, even after she apologized.
Yet again, the author starts each chapter off with making sure the reader always knows what the character's outfit is, and I surprisingly like it! Her acute eye for detail is a nice touch, and I can always very easily imagine what's going on. Sure, this might be similar to those girly-clique series about a group of girls who are rich and popular; except that all of those are missing one key thing: suspense. But THIS series has it! Especially the last few chapters when the climax and great ending started just bubbling over. I was making fast predictions in my head about who "A" was and what would happen next, I was usually wrong! Not a predictable book, I'll say that.
Sara Shepard's writing is so enjoyable, with a mix of sarcasm from the girls, great details, a suspenseful and addicting plot, and of course juicy gossip and deep secrets! This is a perfect book and series for older girls, but I wouldn't recommend it to young teens because of mature themes in it. I am so excited to read the next in the series, "Perfect"!
It's almost embarrassing how much I love these books! Book 2 picks up right where the first one left off. All 4 girls are still receiveing mysterious text messages from ~A and all 4 girls are still terrified of having their secrets exposed. It's starting to interfere with every day life and it's showing. In some way or another each of the girls is having some part of her life fall apart due to ~A's interference. The dysfunctional families are still a huge problem and so are all of the bad choices. It seems that there's something cringeworthy in each chapter but I still can't get enough! Secrets are revealed in this book and they are biggies. Can't wait to start the next book!
I was very eager for this book to be released, especially since I loved the first one so much. The Pretty Little Liars series has so far been very suspenseful with plenty of bad behavior and uncertainty to keep everyone guessing as to what will happen next. Flawless was not quite as good as the first novel in my opinion, but it still kept me up all night reading.
In order to fully understand both this review and the book itself, you should read the first novel in the series. Flawless starts us off by first taking us into the past where we learn about the "The Jenna Thing". Then it immediately picks up exactly where book #1 dropped us off - at Alison's funeral right after everyone gets a text message from "A" stating that she/he is still here and still knows everything. It's been determined that Alison is dead, so she can't be sending them messages. So who is it, exactly?
In this novel, the four girls get themselves into even more trouble. Aria, who still pines for her teacher, gets mixed up in her father's affair with Meredith. Spencer decides to see her sister's ex-boyfriend again. After all, her family and sister are extremely mad at her, plus she gets cut off from her credit cards, so she figures she has little left to lose. Hanna becomes even more obsessed with her weight and appearance and also gets in trouble for the stunt she pulled in the last novel. Lastly, Emily has a crush on her new best friend, but is too confused and scared to do anything about it. To top it all off, one of the people that the girls all suspect to be "A" dies.
But the "A" person continues to harass, threaten and embarrass them with emails and text-messages, driving all of the girls to the point of near insanity. Instead of confiding in each other about them, they are unfortunately driven apart because they each have a dirty secret that "A" apparently knows, but nobody else does. Will they ever find out who "A" is and be forced to reveal their secrets?
I enjoyed this book immensely, but not as much as the first simply because I started to wonder why the girls didn't try harder to find out who "A" is. I mean, texts and emails are pretty traceable. Also, the books are a little unrealistic. How is it possible that this "A" person be present everywhere all the time without being spotted?
Other than those things, however, this was a great read and I am eagerly awaiting the third book in the series. I recommend this book to fans of the first - just don't start it late before going to bed or you will be up all night!
FLAWLESS is a great guilty-pleasure novel, full of suspense and intrigue hidden behind the perfect masks worn by the inhabitants of the perfect town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania. It is also surprisingly deep.
In this continuation of the story begun in PRETTY LITTLE LIARS (DO read PLL first), Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily are still trying to keep their secrets hidden, even from each other, and discover the identity of "A." The page-turning suspense continues, and the mystery only deepens in this book.
The four girls are realistic enough characters, though they don't exactly jump off the page. The writing itself is not breathtaking, but not bad enough to distract from the heart-pounding suspense. In short, the actual writing of this book is mediocre, but the suspense is enough to keep readers hooked.
Book Two is at least as much fun as Book One.
I don't know why, but I'm loving these books so far. Kinda weird maybe for a 30 year old. But I like the simplicity of the story and that its slightly aimed at older women (mainly because there are drugs and drinking in it so its not the greatest example for teenagers) but it is still a story about teenagers. I'm loving the mystery and I keep wondering who the heck A is. I've gotten a better idea of who it could be from the books then from the show. Or maybe they are going to end up being two different people. I'm not sure.
I can say that I was shocked by the ending. The first two books follow semi-closely with the TV show, so I figured it would continue to do so. But something happens towards the end of this book that I wasn't expecting and its completely different then the show.
Overall I'm enjoying this series and they are fairly quick reads. I'd be reading them faster if I wasn't also reading (and reviewing) other books! ;)
The second book in the Pretty Little Liars series serves up what you would expect if you've read the first book: mystery, red herrings, girls being catty, gratuitous descriptions of clothes and phones, and, of course, lives being ruined by A. I gave it three stars instead of four because, although it's pretty great for what it was, it obviously feels less fresh than the first book, which introduced all the characters and set up the action.
I'm definitely going to continue the series, because there are still mysteries to be solved!
Flawless by Sara Shepard is the second book of the Pretty Little Liars series. It continues Aria's story of her affair with Ezra, Emily's feelings for Maya, Spencer's scandal with Wren, and Hanna's encounters with the law. "A" continues to black-mail the girls trying to get them all to tell their secrets; Aria to tell her mom about her Dad's student-teacher relationship, Emily's new connection with Toby Cavanaugh, Spencer stealing her sister's boyfriends behind her back, and Hanna's little eating disorder. The girls all become excited to go to Foxy, a dance for the highest young socialites of Rosewood, and prepare for a night they won't forget.
I absolutely loved this book. I would approve it to anyone who read the first one or even watches the show. All of the Pretty Little Liar books make you want to keep reading and continue to draw you in throughout the books. Sara Shepard is a genius with these novels. The book just kept me wanting to figure out who "A" is and how I'm going to find it out.
FLAWLESS, the second book in the PRETTY LITTLE LIARS series, creates some serious questions for readers. But like many books in a series, you should only read this second book if you've read the first, to get the full effect! You wouldn't want to ruin a good book!
In FLAWLESS, an unexpected person dies, and the girls continue to get more notes from someone named "A." The identity of "A" is still the big, looming question in this book! Some unanswered questions about Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Spencer are answered. Some of the things that we all wondered from the first Pretty Little Liars book are also answered. But there are definitely still things that I wanted--and needed--to know!
After I read PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, I knew I had to read the sequel! But now, with FLAWLESS, there are still so many unanswered questions at the end that we'll have to read the entire series, including book three (Pretty Little Liars #3: Perfect (Pretty Little Liars)), to find the answers!
lawless started off sort of slow for me, but it quickly picked up speed. I enjoyed each of the girls' point of views. There were definitely many twists and turns that I did not see coming. I really thought I knew who 'A' was, but it became clear in this book that I was completely wrong. I really want to know who 'A' is though! How can this person know so much about these girls? I need to know!
Aria and Spencer are still my favorite characters. I just find their lives more interesting than Hannah and Emily's.
I was really looking forward to this book. I liked the first one. It caught my attention with the mystery and the characters were great. I also really enjoyed the first season of the TV show.
Sadly I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. It seemed like nothing happened for most of the story and then all of a sudden so much was happening at once. But, I was also constantly comparing it to the TV show. Things were the same, but then there was a lot different. I couldn't figure out were the show was compared to what was happening in the book. I know the ending of this one hasn't happened in the show (and it might not).
So it's strange to say, that I think I like the show more. I still think I will read a few more of the series (especially since my library now has them). I probably would have liked it more had I read before the TV show started.
I thought the book was fantastic. Starting where "Pretty Little Liars" left off, it picks up the story of four girls, Emily, Spencer, Aria and Hanna, who share a terrible secret. The fifth girl who knew the secret, Ali, who was missing for years, has been found dead.
The girls are receiving text messages and IMs from "A.", who knows all their secrets, past and present. Does this mean Ali's actually alive? Or does someone else know what happened that fateful night?
You won't find out who A is in this book. What you will find is namebrand after namebrand, describing everything from the girls' cars to their clothes to their cigarettes. I found that to be a bit annoying, but I can get over it for a great story.
So begins the second book in Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series. This one focuses on desperately-seeking-perfection-Hanna, while still intriguing its readers to solve the mystery of 'A': both the the death of and the cryptic messages that Aria, Hanna, Spencer and Emily are still receiving. I have my suspicions, but Shepard shoots down my theories with the turn of every page. If you enjoy the drama of a high school clique mixed with the suspense of a Lifetime Movie, then you will love this series. I can't wait until I can get my hands on #3: Perfect.
I read the book Flawless by Sara Shepard. I thought it was good and I recommend it to girls who like mystery books. This book was about five girls who all had secrets. One of them went missing and the other four girls got text messages from someone named A. A knew all of their secrets and blackmailed them. I liked this book because it was interesting and you always wanted to know more.This book was a mystery as well as a friendship story. The mystery part of the story is when Ali went missing, and the friendship part of the story was when they got the messages and how they had to stay together.My favorite part of the book is how it kept you wanting to read more and it didn't make you board.
So suspenseful. Gosh my heart was racing towards the end of this story. You find out some very valuable secrets such as "The Jenna Thing" and remeber that comprimise Ali made with Toby that led Toby to confess to setting off the fireworks. Well Ali had to keep his secret in order for Toby to keep Ali's, Spencer's, Hanna's, Aria's, and Emily's secret, which is revealed and those secrets are juicy, lets just say chapter 37 is revealing.
Well written, engaging and very different from the series. I'm just as excited to read the next book as I Ann to see the next episode. It has so many subtle and obvious differences that it feels like 2 separate stories so or doesn't spoil the series at all. For those of you that sway you know who A is because you read the books, you have no clue I'm sure, because the story line is so different by book 3 that there's no way the book and the series can possibly end the same, but I guess we'll see! :-)
A sends the four of them text messages and emails telling them to do bad or embarrassing things so one of their secrets won't be told. None of them know who this person is and A knows all of their deepest secrets. They also are trying to find out who murdered their long lost friend, Alison. Who is A, and what secrets will they uncover next?
Flawless is a great read with loads of suspense and it will definitely keep you guessing.
Consider what it's like to live with dirty little secrets inside of you? Well "Flawless" makes it obvious that it's torture, especially when some one knows EVERY SINGLE THING. It's a real page turner and I just couldn't stop reading it. I'm in 6th grade and I'm 11 years old, I REALLY love reading and this is one of the BEST books I have ever read.
this book was amazing. i know i'm on the younger side, and some parts may have been meant for older readers, but you can't deny the perfection of the writing. i'm also noticing a pattern. the first book ended with a text from A after the pretty little liars thought they were safe because Alison was found dead. the second book ended the same, except with a dead Toby. i haven't yet read the next book in the series, but i'm so excited to!
Although this book is full of deliciously crazy mysteries it was just too short and also why kill off the amazing Toby so soon I was really starting to like him...km he was kinda really creepy plus I want to see some more Miley in action
Pretty Little Liars #2: Flawless does NOT disappoint the reader! It is packed with more twists and turns keeping the reader guessing the identity of "A" all along the way. There are surprises that I did not anticipate.
The book is a good sequel to Pretty Little Liars #1! I can't wait for #3! This book is appropriate for high school aged girls. I do NOT recommend it for girls younger than high school due to some language and multiple references to sex.
I really enjoyed reading this book and it picks up exactly where PLL leaves off. Its easy to follow and all of the characters keep the suspence going with each twist and turn. I really enjoy Arias secret romamce with Ezra, and if you watch the show on ABC Family then you know they go together not just in persnality but in looks too.
Sara Shepard knows how to create a good plot twist. Just when you think you have the story figured out, the plot twists completely around to the point where you wonder if there is any point in trying to figure out what will happen next.
