The characters were interesting and the discriptions of Victorian London were wonderfully atmospheric. But....the forward momentum of the plot was terribly slow, and that made it hard to sustain interest.

This yarn about the Yard before it became what we know it, is a look into the past with all of the attitudes and ideas as well as a good, well-spun yarn with the sub-plots all converging into one neatly, if somewhat bloodied, storyline.

Very good read. I look forward to reading more of this series. Mr. Grecian develops an excellent story with interesting characters. The story has good closure while staging the scene for additional books. Well done!

This an engrossing historical fiction about the early years of Scotland Yard, starting just after the Jack the Ripper murders.
Inspector Day is new to the Yard when some new serial killer starts murdering policemen. Another starts killing men with beards, but shaving them first.
What makes this work so unique is that it takes place in the infancy of forensic science and proper police procedure. You can read along as the men of the Yard get their first Medical Examiner and start incorporating new techniques and tools of the trade.
The murders and the events leading up to their solution will such you in and lead you through a series of bizarre twists and turns. I enjoyed this immensely - it was recommended by a friend in law enforcement. I am going to get the next in the series next thing I do.

I have been looking for books similar to The Alienist for years and The Yard is the closest that I have come. The characters have depth, the history appears to be accurate (I'm not an expert) and the story kept me engaged and excited to get back to the book.

The Yard was very atmospheric of London in the 1890's. I felt as if I were there. The story was dark and exciting.......I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I would definitely recommend it for lovers of PBS Masterpiece Mystery series.

It was a great book. It balanced both the criminal and the lead investigators as the crime is unveiled. There was balance between both angles and I would highly recommend reading this book for the historical authenticity it has in the novel.

I picked this book not knowing anything about the author. In my opinion he is brilliant. This is one of those books that has a some what fast pace but it is so well written that the reader doesn't get lost. The author uses a lot of period language because the story takes place in 1800's London. But that just makes the story more believe able. I liked this story so much that I am tying to find mor like it. MUST READ!

Very well written. Great imagination and creativity by the author. I was very impressed by the attention to detail without going so deep as to distract from the story. Easy to get lost reading this book.

. I enjoyed the vintage back drop of the book, historical events, and the characters. It was fun to read. I really think it is a 3+, There were parts that were very exciting and I could not put the book down.

Halfway through it. The idea itself has been very broadly explored in the past 20 years or so. This book is nowhere near Caleb's Carr duo (even though it happens in New York, not London). The historical background is very soft and the plot seems to carry on without any sense of direction, crescendo or any wink to the reader.

The Yard was just what I wanted, something that was so good I couldn't wait to get my chores done so I could sit down and enjoy it. The characters are endearing and well developed. It made me want to read the next book in the series right away.

A wonderful adventure with interesting characters and thematic descriptions. Reminded me of the BBC series Ripper Street - though quite a bit less "rough". I like this period, so I enjoyed the novel and plan to read the next one.

I love historical fiction. Author did a great job of describing characters and getting into their head. The yard also touches on the beginnings of forensics. I like the fact that they think Jack the Ripper is one of a kind and how they approach their latest investigation.
