Lots of great information for our trip up the AlCan and move to Alaska. However, the pages are super thin. I was flipping through it before wrapping it up for my husband’s birthday and one of the pages ripped about 2 inches. It definitely needs very gentle handling, which is difficult for referencing in the car or letting my elementary aged kiddos read.

I took a round trip from my house in Homer, Alaska to Seattle (where I'm originally from) last summer and the 2017 Milepost was a gem of a guide. I bought one for this year for a friend taking a similar trip from Seattle to Denali this summer. This book tell you mile by mile what to expect in terms of food, attractions, lodging and camping. Make sure you take the Top of the World Highway!

The only thing I found useful was the tear out map. The book is confusing and some things were out of date. We actually found the Free Bell's Guides you can get at information centers/hotels/RV parks to be much better sources of information. My copy of the milepost is heading to the recycling center and will hopefully get remade into something useful.

Our second copy. We used one for ten days driving around Alaska in 2015. Now we are going back to spend the summer in our travel trailer, so we have the 2018 edition. We are already using it to plan, and Milepost will live in the front seat for hourly consultation on the summer trip. It includes the Canadian routes into Alaska.

If you live in Alaska or traveling there this is a wonderful resource. Alaska doesn't have a lot of paved roads compared to o6ther states, but the Milepost helps travelers traverse the state well informed and with absolutely essential information on the road system, the communities, their unique qualities to explore and enjoy and everything practical one might need as a traveler. For all the years my husband and I lived in Alaska we kept the current year's Milepost sitting in the car, and now we buy it for vacation trips there...and because we get homesick for the state that we love. Any friend who is going to Alaska for fun or work or both gets a copy of the current Milepost from us. Don't be deterred by the price. Its worth every penny. While its updated every year even an older copy is useful in a pinch.
