Very different from her other books, and not in a good way. All of the characters were hard to like, or to relate to. Ms Slaughter has written plenty of really good reads, I recommend reading one of those and skipping this one entirely.

Really enjoyed this book, took a while to start actually liking the main character with her seemingly lack of purpose ,but it did all come together quite well and glad I persevered as it ended up as a pretty good read.

I honestly do not know how to describe this book. I love Ms. Slaughter's writing style, and the plot in the book kept me interested. The problem is this: The characters in the book are just absolutely NOT likable. Andrea's stepdad might be a good guy, but we don't see a lot of him. Other than that, I don't like any of these messed up, misguided, manipulative, strange people! It's difficult to actually enjoy a book when every newly-introduced character just makes the reader want to slap them. When I finally finished this book I was, I think, relieved that it was over. That's a bad thing, right?

Giving 2 Stars stretches to the max. The story may contain an idea worth exploring but I'm just not sure. The book doesn't come together. The story jumps around in a manner hard to follow, and perhaps more seriously prevents the development of characters into meaningful personalities. I've read most of Karen S!aughter's books and found them enjoyable and well written. This one was a complete disappointment.

I am such a chicken! To me, a 'thriller' becomes a 'horror.' But, in a good way. And I read very slowly looking up terms it mentioned in Wikipedia, just to make it last longer. Wuss, but in a good way, me thinks.

This intensely suspenseful novel delivered exactly what I’ve come to love from Slaughter. When Andy and her mother come under fire in a mass shooting in a local mall, Laura demonstrates either a skill for self-preservation or a talent for violence. Laura then warns Andy to get as far away from her as possible, leaving Andy to question how Laura could turn from suburban, stalwart mom into a character from a Kill Bill movie. The more she investigates, the more disturbed Andy becomes by what she learns about Laura’s past.
The story alternates between Andy’s present inquiries and the past narration of a group of 1980’s idealist radicals. Are they really righteous activists seeking to better the world or just entranced by their Jim Jonse-ian, Manson-esque leader? I appreciated the complexities of the characters: Jane’s vulnerability, Andrew’s addictive personality, Nick’s manipulativeness, or Andy’s reticence. They all make choices that have dramatic and devastating consequences. This novel was a blood-soaked thrill-ride from start to finish and I savored every page of it.
