Lilting, lyrical prose? Check!
Fragile, chipped/broken characters? Check!
Shockingly hot intimacy? Check!
C.D. Reiss’ ground breaking new series begins with Rough Edge. In her latest book, Ms. Reiss explores marital relationships and devotion and how they are impacted by trauma, abuse, and mental health. Only a talented storyteller like Ms. Reiss could also add in a bit of suspense and mystery to the mix.
Ms. Reiss’ writing is emotive. Her characters are sympathetic, and their story is compelling. Two doctors who have been through the Hell of active duty are now married and civilian. They are looking forward to meaningful practices and a quiet life together. However, there are dark, disturbed forces tracking them like hungry wolves.
Rough Edge is the spellbinding beginning to the four-part story of Drs. Greyson Frazier and Caden St. John. Every page of this book is intense, and the boundary blurs considerably as Ms. Reiss takes her readers to the edge of all that they believe.

Grayson returns from duty to be reunited with her new husband, Caden. Adjusting to both civilian life and marriage turns out to be more of a challenge than she imagined it would be. Determined to make a go of her life outside of the army, she sets out to do whatever it takes in her personal and professional life.
There’s no denying life doesn’t have the same edge to it as it did in the military. The challenges are still there, though, and together they fight hard to make their marriage work. Outside influences start to throw their balance. Caden’s coping mechanisms begin to create a facet to their marriage taking sheer instinct to navigate through it all.
Exactly what is causing the rift is unknown. Solving the mystery before it’s revealed in the book will be the challenge! My mind is churning over more than a few possibilities. There are times when I think I have it all worked out, then boom – another vital detail comes to light and all bets are off again.
While they met while serving abroad in the military, they were both there as medical staff. Caden is a surgeon and Grayson a psychologist. They are able to continue with their professions as civilians which appealed to me as I am not generally a fan of military based stories. While the setting is influenced by their professions, it is a relationship based mystery.
What is working for me in Caden and Grayson’s relationship is the delicate balance they are trying to hold on to. With them both being established within the medical field, I wondered about their resolve to continue cruising dangerously close to the edge panned out for as long as it did.
This brings me to the rough edge of their relationship. It was hot, consensual at the same time as being dangerous on more than one level. The next book, Cutting Edge is a prequel to this book, telling the story of how Caden and Grayson first met. Each book so far ends at the edge of a revelation, some may call them cliffhangers. What it provides for me though is time to process and ponder the story thus far. Needless to say I am hooked on a new dark series!

This looks, leaves you breathless and uncomfortable, and feels like vintage C.D. Reiss. Back to beginning when I fell in love with this authors uniquely stylized, intricate, thoughtful writing and bold, passionate story telling. The way she interlaces psychology and manipulation with brilliant fervor throughout the pages of her stories. Rough Edge holds all of that within it's pages and so much more. It's deeply nuanced into a streamline of one couple's story of keeping it together despite the enormous challenge set before them. It's brave, complex, intense, and classically laced with Reiss's distinct trickery to leave you reeling without knowing which way is up.
Dr. Caden St. John runs ice cold and his wife Dr. Greyson Frazier perpetuates warmth. The two of them fell for each other under specific circumstances tethering them to the utmost of crucial, importance circumstances surrounding their fall. Navigating a life outside of those circumstances after a whirlwind courtship becomes as emotionless as it does fiery. They're both dangerous in ways we as readers can't even understand yet. Both of them are discovering facets of themselves that have been hidden in the shadows of their lives until the point of recognition in each other. And the threat of that mysteriously dark and menacing allure feels as exciting as it does confusing and reckless. As their impulsive love and deeply connected, twisted journey begins to untangle exposing vulnerabilities, weaknesses and so much more a story like no other will take you for the most consuming of rides.
I'm giddy with excitement over this dangerously remarkable book and the dark promise of what's to come in the rest of this intriguing series. C.D. Reiss packs a powerful punch introducing readers to what's sure to be a thrilling, mindful, impassioned, edgy series of books featuring these two one-of-a-kind characters. Rough Edge skirts the lines of possibility within the gray areas by pushing boundaries, blurring lines, and crossing into the shadows hidden beneath the surface. It's classic C.D. Reiss. The kind of storytelling I fell in love with when first introduced to her. It's beautifully mind bending and tragically healing. And I can't wait for more.

The blurb for this book immediately pulls you in! It’s a very accurate synopsis of what lies between the pages of book 1 in The Edge series, where we truly see CD Reiss “going back to her roots”. She has found a way to blow me away that doesn’t transpire too often anymore. I was captivated from the blurb! Diving into this story of Greyson and Caden, I only found that as their story unfolded, Christine has in a very profound way, pulled a story out of a very broken soul and turned it into a page turner! I devoured this book in under a day. It was one of the first books in a very long time to leave my head spinning and yet leave me yearning for more.
The story itself is of Caden and Greyson. Both recently out of the service, and adjusting to the Civilian life. Their marriage is so fresh they haven’t even lived together before Greyson ends her time in the Army and returns to be with her new husband in NYC.
As their story unfolds, you see a very dark and very fascinating journey these two must go on to overcome the demons that lie beneath the surface. Their chemistry and passion is so ferocious, I truly cannot wait to see what else CD Reiss has for us in this series.
And that is all I can say about this book without jeopardizing plot lines! If you are looking for a read very different from anything you have most likely picked up before, this is where I say you start!

Rough Edge follows a married couple, Caden and Greyson. They met while in active duty. There is a little bit of toggling between past and present but for the most part this book is focused on these two living as a married couple and civilians for the first time.
Caden is a heart surgeon and Greyson is starting her own psychiatric practice. She is focusing on helping vets dealing with PTSD. These two are madly in love and can't keep their hands off each other until suddenly Caden starts becoming cold towards Greyson one minute and obsessed with her another. Greyson starts to worry what Caden's behavior means but what she initially thought, isn't what's going on. In fact, as a reader you really don't know what's going on either.
I really don't think I should say any more, not that I could explain what is going on anyway. One thing I can say is it was a total mind trip. I went into this book blind and I highly recommend doing the same. It's an experience this author is known for giving her readers. It's going to have you scrambling to try to figure out what is going on, how far this author is going to take this and who will these people be when it is all said and done.
The author leaves us hanging on a pretty big moment and I need the second book NOW!!! ARC provided by author.

If you’re lucky, you occasionally pick up a book and it only takes you a few pages to know that the story is going to be something special. Rock your world special. That happened to me today. Rough Edge is weapons grade CD Reiss, and her finest work to date. It’s dark. So, so dark. Brutal and tender. Love and Lust and Longing distilled to its essence in the crucible of war. You’ve never met a couple like Caden and Greyson, and their provocative story of wartime courtship and peacetime marriage is a sexy, scary reflection on devotion, limits and self. If the thought of Jonathan Drazen or Adam Steinbeck made you flushed and anxious and needy, be ready to kneel for the sexiest beast in town, Caden St. John. He IS the siren’s song – tempting you to throw yourself on the brutality of his cool, calculated passion. The Edge is going to take married romance to the abyss and soar over it. I guarantee you haven’t read anything like this before.

The Queen is back and with a vengeance! Christine Reiss brings literally the edgiest, most intense, raw, emotional and erotic story I have ever read. She artfully crafts her characters with such depth, letting us only see a fraction of their true selves.
Caden St. John has so many layers and we have barely scratched the surface. What makes this brilliant surgeon with a huge heart and dark desires tick, remains to be seen. Greyson Frazier, stoic, smart as a whip, psychiatrist has chosen her life with Caden over a life long military career. Meeting during the Iraq War brings a sense of urgency to their experiences together. When the call of civilian life takes heed, Caden and Greyson are faced with creating a new normal. However when an unknown entity begins to lurk in the shadows of Caden's mind, what is conventional takes on a whole new meaning.
Unexpected and twisted , Rough edge is a mind bending beginning to a series that is sure to be top read of the year!!

Intense Edge of you seat book. Your heart will be pounding out your chest with this book and The Cliff Love them or hate them will have you begging for the next book fast.
How far would go into the dark to help the one you love see the light? What if you loved the dark more than the light? Who is the person you married.
Caden & Greyson just return to live what do they call it normal lives after leaving the Army. Dr. Greyson Fraizer (she's a major in the Army) and Captain Caden St. John surgeon.
"We're going to build an entire life out of a war."
"NO matter which perfume she wore, she smelled of the first bite of an apple, breaking taut skin with teeth, juice dripping down my chin. "
" I was her lover and her tormentor. Her husband and attacker. He pain and pleasure spinning in a centrifuge."
"I had to fruck her like a fighter. Mark her like a vandal. Break her like a champion

I have enjoyed books that are dark gritty and raw but this book was too confusing and wacky. I had zero feelings for the characters. One reviewer compared the male character to Christian Grey. I totally disagree. I got how Ana could fall in love with Christian. He had issues but he was a dream. This character was a nightmare.

I’ve learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to CD Reiss' darker reads; I almost always go in blind, dispelling any and all theories right out of the gate, allowing Reiss to take me where she wants me to go, knowing that the journey is not straightforward and that it will push my boundaries when it comes to separating the world and characters she’s created from the conscious world outside.
But, I have to admit, even with a solid game plan like the one I initiated before I read page 1, I was not at all prepared for where Reiss took her characters and consequently took her readers in Rough Edge, and that’s because the dark erotic vibe that I’ve come to love when it comes to Reiss' layered story lines is beyond anything I’ve seen, which means that for a lot of it, I was lost in the complications of the plot and confounded by the actions and reactions of two people who love each other with an emotion that is both obsessive and essential at the same time.
I don’t want to give any of the plot away because to truly appreciate how masterfully Reiss crafts readers’ introduction and initial interaction into this married couple and all that they must endure now that they are both no longer in the Armed Forces, it must be experienced without preconceived notions because once readers have been immersed in all the kinkiness that abounds in the story as well as the healthy doses of dark and twisty encounters, they’ll find they can’t let go of this addictive read even after the last page of the book is read.
Absolutely Mind Messed Up…that’s the only way I can describe how I felt after reading the beginning of Greyson and Caden’s story, and it’s not just from the boundaries that Caden pushes when it comes to his physical relationship with his wife; it’s also
the fact that it was extremely difficult to wrap my brain around the two sides of Caden’s personality that seem to co-exist - one dominating the other, at times, but neither ever fully gain control, which means that the man behind the monster and the monster behind the man are both actively responsible for the crazy ride Greyson and Caden experience.
I also have to say that as much as I attempted to delve further into both Greyson and Caden’s psyches to truly understand their perspectives and the reasons behind their words and actions, I could never quite grasp them, and while that’s frustrating for me as a reader who needs to understand the inner workings of the plot and its characters, the analytical literary nerd in me loves that I’m only getting small fragments of the characters’ reality, which means that as the series continues, those pieces will begin to create the big picture, which scares the hell out of me, but it also leaves me anxiously waiting to see all of their craziness out in the open.

Looking for a story that will consume you? Make you question everything and have you exhilarated and in a constant state of sizzling arousal from cover to cover? The Edge series is definitely for you! This book is sexy, electrifying, suspenseful PERFECTION!
I finished with a gasp. Closed my kindle cover and stared at the wall. REELING. AMAZED. IMPRESSED beyond belief by the power of the written word to evoke so many emotions. Got the side eye from my husband because I was mumbling and wide eyed. Lol.
Christine Reiss is an incredible author. I usually describe her writing as super intelligent. On a level of her own. I think a few fans are referring to this as Reissism. She deserves this branding wholeheartedly. Nothing cocky about it. (See what I did there?) Ok let me focus...
Incredible attention to detail. And I mean ALL the detail. In every aspect of this storyline from the military references, to the medical field and relationships. Covers all the bases with precision. Impeccable wording, descriptions and comparisons. Beautifully articulated. Complex and such well developed characters. Unique storyline. Add the suspense factor - mind blown! Whatever my expectations were when I started reading - were obliterated in spectacular fashion.
Caden & Greyson are fascinating characters. They are from very different backgrounds yet brought together while serving the greater good. Meet while in the army. Caden is a surgeon. Greyson a psychiatrist. They fall in love, marry and eventually get out of the army to settle down as civilians in New York. Fantastic use of time hops kept me transfixed while providing crucial back story. All so beautifully written I could visualize everything like a movie playing out in my head. I am dying to know how this story will unfold.
If you like thrilling, exhilarating, steamy, hot as hell reads - you will devour Rough Edge. This series is going to be mind blowing, I have no doubt. 1st book of 4 and I already know we are in for a powerful, intriguing, electrifying adventure.
Twiddling my thumbs while I impatiently count down to book 2. I'm in that space where after finishing such an off the charts amazing book - it will be hard to pick up another. Every author aspires to this - CD Reiss has achieved this time and time again in my opinion.

If there’s one thing Reiss executes exceedingly well is the research she does for her stories. Rough Edge is no exception. Facts are presented in a gritty and realistic manner that more than skirt around the dark side of eroticism and as the title implies, is rough-edged. And it's beyond brilliant. Okay, so if said facts have been twisted a tad, it’s a means to an end but that's the author's prerogative, right? Even though the subject in question is a hard pill to swallow, some actions are even harder to understand for the players. That being said, the author’s outstanding narrative helped me become totally invested in her protagonists. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said I lost sleep over Captain Caden St. John and his wife, Dr. Greyson Fraizer’s dilemma. At times, I found it difficult to collect coherent thoughts regardless of what these two professionals were up against. So, prepare yourselves for a roller-coaster ride of emotions and an intensity like you've never experienced before from Reiss’ storytelling.
Caden and Greyson’s narrative is an unusual one in the respect that there’s no build up to their love story. Told from a dual point of view in past tense, flashbacks soon put me in the picture. I learnt where they met and how an all-consuming attraction, boundless lust and a professional and personal respect flowers into what appears to be a solid problem-free marriage. By no means was it made in heaven, albeit all the points for being a successful one are there. I wanted them to be invincible, they did, too. Yet Reiss doesn't make it as simple as that. She's gone back to her writing roots and I folks, wasn’t just jumping for joy, I was blinkin’ well happy dancing!
In the beginning, there wasn’t a second where I felt unduly concerned about Caden and Grayson's relationship. Stronger than a team, ‘their togetherness’ seemed to rule so clearly that the author's vivid account of their feelings fooled me into thinking everything was tickety-boo. Reiss does this to the reader very cleverly. Result...it didn’t take long for me to let my frustration be heard in the way of some rather unladylike expressions, because when it came to the crunch, I suffered as much as her characters. Perhaps I’d relaxed a little too much into their story or maybe it’s my blind faith in this lifelong institution called marriage... whatever, while lapping up the author's characters’ anecdotes, I noticed that the very love balance achieved showed signs of cracking. And I, in all my naïvty, believed said cracks could be fixed or brushed under the carpet. This is serious stuff though. Questions arise. Some are answered quickly; others, the ones I wanted to know like yesterday, were left pending. So what caused the last straw to break? How deeply ingrained is the crack and secondly, is there anyone sufficiently trustworthy and prepared to help Caden? The answer is closer to home than you can imagine...ahem, don't think too much...just one-click and find out!
I couldn't have wished to meet a lovelier and more generous person like Greyson. She's out of her comfort zone, making the best of it with style and know-how. All said and done, in her professional capacity, dealing with the most complicated of cases under whatever circumstance is what she does well. And more important are words of encouragement from the man she worships. Little does she know her personal life would be thrown off course, turned inside out and left feeling alone in that very city she'd quickly adapted to.
Caden knows something is very wrong in his marriage when both he and Greyson come back to what is considered civilization. He adores her. His only way of expressing his feelings will make you sit up straight, turn the pages even quicker than you had been and damn well hope for the best. Get ready; something strange is lurking, it won’t go away, it’s growing stronger. Excuse me if I say he's the bee's knees personified. The imperfectly perfect swoon-worthy dirty-talking hero who had me at the drop of a hat made my heart bleed for him. And my heart cried out even louder for his wife.
I wouldn’t be letting on if I told you what Caden does for a living as it’s in the synopsis. Nevertheless, for lovers of CD’s penmanship and newbies included, (the cadence in her words are layered, fluid and stunningly evocative), I’d highly recommend going in blind. It’s all about the element of surprise in this book, all said and done, this is a psychological headbanger of the first degree that oozes angst and passionate eroticism. What more can I say except thank goodness On the Edge, the next book in The Edge series releases soon. Bravo Reiss! Five +++ stars.

Mind. Blown.
I am still reeling over that ending. It doesn’t entirely make sense in my mind, but at the same time it does. I think I’m still in too much of a shock to really grasp what it means, but I know it’ll be answered in the next book, which I need, like, yesterday.
When one of the admins on my blog told me she almost didn’t get approved for the arc of this book because the tour company said it was so dark, they needed to vet all those that applied for it so nobody got offended, I knew I had to have it. And while it was “dark” like I thought it would be (I didn’t even read the synopsis before signing up), it was still really good.
Very strange, but good. You have to come to terms with the fact that Caden is suffering from some extreme PTSD causing him to need to harm his wife to really get into the book. Because once it starts talking about this PTSD and how it’s manifested in his life, you really take a step back and ask yourself what the f*** is happening. Because it didn’t make sense when it was first mentioned. I had so many questions. But I kept on reading and slowly it started making sense and I had to keep on going.
Like I said, it’s very strange and somewhat difficult to get into, but the quicker you come to terms with what I mentioned above, the quicker you’ll be able to settle into this book and enjoy it.
I also feel that this book isn’t one you can take lightly. It’s very heavy. And I say that because it just didn’t seem like any other book I’ve ever read. I really have to think on it. I know that I enjoyed it. I know that it was strange. I also know that it was really good. But now that I’ve put it down and have taken a step back, I’m finding myself questioning things that happened. Especially the ending. I don’t know what it means, but my god I can’t wait to find out.
I feel like I’m doing a horrible job of explaining this book. Reading it was an experience in and of itself. Not that I went through a myriad of emotions, but just that it was very odd but at the same time perfectly normal. Which is exactly how I would describe Greyson and Caden as a couple.
This book isn’t for everyone. Definitely not for those that don’t like romantic suspense or any semblance of the dark in romance novels. But if you love dominant, sadistic masochists and romantic suspense, this is for you.

Holy Crap! I just literally finished reading this book and ran to write my review, but I just don’t know where to start. That is how mind blown I am!!
I’m still trying to get over the way this ended.
CD Reiss just knows how to write a story that keeps you on the edge, keeps your blood pumping so hard, you feel like you are gonna have a heart attack. The twist and turns, the guessing game, the darkness that spills off this pages is so unbelievable and so mind gripping..... I don’t know how else to explain it.
Greyson a psychiatrist, a Major in the US army, has never really picture her self out of the military, is her life. Helping soldiers on the battlefield, assessing PTSD, seeing if they are fit to go back to war is what keeps her happy and motivated. But meeting Caden and having spend time with him thing are staring to look different, feeling are getting involved.
Caden a Captain in the Army, a surgeon that has seen way to much blood, casualties and the pain of war. Helping soldiers live thru it and never once stopping to rest or take care of himself. Great at compartmentalizations and cold when he needs to be.He is now under Greyson’s care, being that he acts like a robot and someone needs to asses him before cutting into someone else. The chemistry between this two is hot, the pull they have between each other is undeniable. Once they let go they understand each other to a T. But what happens when they start the live a life outside the Army, when there is no longer a war between them, or country’s that separate them and Caden starts to act different and everything seems to become dark and the lines become blurry.
Will the Major and the Captain survive the civilian life, will the war that brews inside Caden destroy them both. Will the person between them win?
CD Reiss has written a book with so much twists that it will keep you guessing till the end. A story that takes you thru a marriage that is falling apart but for so many different reasons that you would expect. This series is gonna be one for the books, Rough Edge was exhilarating and I just can’t wait to see what is next. Because that ending was just.... wow! Until it continues again.
I wish I can give this book 10 stars.. it was amazing!

Rough Edge totally BLEW ME AWAY. CD did not disappoint and left me wanting more…. AND I’m not above begging!! Dark Edges is dark and intense, filled with passion and chemistry and is highly erotic. So good you will not want to put it down!!
It is an amazing story of two veterans who met in Fallujah, they fell in love there and got married. Captain Caden St. John, is a world class heart surgeon. Caden is not only devastatingly handsome but he’s a war hero, his talents as a surgeon are well known. Major Greyson Frazier, is a psychiatrist. She works with the soldiers on the battlefields to help them cope with the war and the effect of PTSD.
Returning home to the state’s first, Caden has already established himself in a prestigious hospital. Greyson has followed him from Fallujah a short time later. Now for the first time they will be living together as husband and wife as they are adjusting to life after the military. Greyson, who plans to continue working with veterans, is starting her first private psychiatric practice.
But what happens when Caden becomes possessive of Greyson? So much so that she becomes his total focus, his obsession and he will do anything to make sure everyone knows she’s his? And when he feels threatened there is only one way to show that she is his? Even if what Caden does causes Greyson pain.
When Greyson sees how Caden is coming unraveled there is nothing that she wouldn’t do to help him. No matter WHAT, no matter how much he pushes her. Surprisingly, Greyson realized that she liked the pleasure that came with the pain. Another twist to their life.
Would the intense darkness that’s consumed Caden sound an alarm for Greyson? Would Greyson be able to help Caden with his demons? Can their all-encompassing love and devotion to each other be enough to deal with what’s bubbling just below the surface?
The only other thing I might add about Rough Edge is holy hell a WTF ending!!

After serving fourteen years in the army, Greyson Frazier is a psychiatrist acclimating to private practice and a new marriage. With a competitive streak, Greyson pushes limits within the confines of a structured environment but she slowly realizes the boundaries have changed.
Caden St. John is a heart surgeon who volunteered his time to mend injured soldiers. Having a complicated past, Caden has always been able to separate his emotions but circumstances emerge that cause Caden to fight what he feels.
Together, Greyson and Caden are a complimentary couple with each offering a balance to their dynamic. As Greyson begins to observe changes in Caden, she attempts to help him using scientific methods but she also is willing to try what he believes will chase away his fears. As this pain and pleasure cycle occurs, their relationship escalates leading to self-discovery and to questions about limits.
Told in dual POV, Caden oozes dominance, sex appeal and offers a steady demeanor. With much mystery behind Caden’s conflict, the intensity of his inner struggle is effectively conveyed. In responding to Caden’s demands and needs, Greyson unexpectedly learns more about her own sexuality but her focus during this process is on healing Caden.
In starting this book, I was under the impression this author was returning to her roots, and upon finishing, it definitely seems like that holds true. In this narrative, these two characters are complex, dynamic and willing to sacrifice and fight for each other. Additionally, the pathos present in Caden is constantly at the edge of his behavior driving him to force out his darkest demons. I am hoping it gets even darker as more is revealed and in how Caden and Greyson are able to reconcile what they discover.
Rough Edge is an intensely erotic story about characters making sacrifices and pushing limits. With a pulse on her characters and a plot that breathes on its own, CD Reiss will take you on the edge.

Pay attention to the title. This is the first book in a four-book series, plus a novella prequel. So know, going into this book, that CD Reiss is going to tear you apart and then leave you hanging in a painful, "how can I survive this" kind of way.
Caden and Grayson met during the darkness of war, where he was a surgeon and she was a psychiatrist. When this book opens, they are married and both are back stateside and, for the first time in their relationship, living together.
CD Reiss makes it clear from the start that Caden, particularly, is battling some darkness. As Reiss shows, minimizing Caden's suffering to one wartime incident is a mistake. He is where he is because he has, so far, defeated the demons that prey on him and that predate his enlistment. Reiss also shows that one person can help you--can provide a healing balm, even--but that person cannot fully heal you. Grayson tries, but there are some illnesses that she cannot fix.
I was immediately emotionally involved in this book. From the first pages, I cared deeply about Caden and Grayson, and as CD Reiss drops small clues as to how this book would end, I increasingly felt a trepidation so intense that it was as if I personally know those two characters. That's the sign of an artist, isn't it? Someone who creates a story and characters that feel so real and so tangible that you are shocked that they are fictional.
Honestly, I am terrified as to how the next couple of books are going to go. But it's a good kind of terrified, the type where you dread what an author is going to do to her characters yet, all the while, you relish reading about them because you know that the payoff will be extraordinary.
You will finish this book completely in love with Caden and Grayson. Come back here, hit up the comments, and let me know your thoughts.

5 Stars from Tiffany!
She Always Makes me Think
When it comes to C.D. Reiss, there is no skimming or rushing through her books allowed, otherwise you won't know what in the heck is going on. Rough Edge is no exception. This book has various story lines surrounding our main couple and I'm not even going to try and figure out where it goes from here.
"Our life together will be built into the best from what survived the worst."
Such a menacing statement that tells the truth. Back from the war, both Greyson and Caden are trying to fit into civilian life. On the outside, he's doing a better job than her. Greyson was looking to be a lifer, until her love for Caden finally brought her back home.
As they set up to live happily ever after, realization starts smacking them right in the face. Caden wore his mask well, however when it starts to slip, it's all Greyson can to to help her husband understand himself. She knows what he went through overseas and she can help, but only if he'll let her.
"I didn't want to become a patient in my own marriage."
Wow! Such a powerful and sexy book (of course it is with C.D. Reiss in the wheelhouse). This author seems to be the only one I will read now a days with sex scenes of this nature. I became a fan of hers after the Submission series and Rough Edge has brought me back into her world. It seems the sex with her characters isn't written to be gratuitous, there's a reason or purpose and will take a few books to find out. Of course we are left wondering, but it's a good wonder. Until the next book.

This book was edgy and dark, with a psychological twist that left me yearning for more.
Here we meet army Major Greyson who is home to start her life with husband Caden. Both come from the military and met in a war laden world. Both are doctors, just Greyson is a doctor of the mind while Caden is a doctor of the heart. This story is told in dual POV and set early in their relationship. These events unfold in late 2006 and early 2007, which seems like that might be of significance later.
Caden has always been proud of his ability to disconnect from feelings and bad situations. He almost "checks-out" into this focused, single minded, state of mind. But there is something brewing in his psyche and it wants to come out and play. Greyson who was always meant to be a lifer is trying to adjust to civilian life while coming to terms with all of Caden. He is sometimes the man she married, sometimes he cold and sometimes he is a deviant. Greyson is willing to explore this deviance and finds that she quite enjoys it, but at what cost.
Dark and delicious this book had me from the very beginning. But this is not just about a married couple dabbling in the erotic bedroom play. There is this whole deeper level of the story. Mixed between the past and their present an interesting story unfolds and you are left with one hell of an ending. There are things not yet discovered and secrets that haven't been uncovered and I cannot wait for more from this series. For now I will take a little breather, since I read this one sitting , as I wait for the next part to this complicated story.

Rough Edge roughed me up completely. It took hold of me the only way that a CD Reiss book can do. It held me hostage, it captivated me, it took my breath away and it enamored my love of the dark and messed up recesses of sexuality.
Drs. Greyson Frazier and Caden St. John are doctors who are married and veterans. She is a psychiatrist and he, the heart surgeon. Both are beautiful, handsome, sexy and madly in love. But changes begin to happen and it their effects the dynamics of their marriage. Secrets, mysteries, PTSD, and a darkness envelops their lives. That darkness is powerful and conflicting and ROUGH.....it takes their life to the edge and threatens to push them over.
There’s not much more I want to share with you. The story should be felt organically as it happens. Page by page, my mouth became ajar with the happenings. The darkness and the emergence of erotic play will grab you and at times, it is hard to read. But with the poetic, passionate, emotional and gripping words from the author, the story became addicting. I like to refer to this as Vintage CD Reiss.....love, darkness, kink, twisted intimacy at its finest.
This book is the first in a 4 part series with a just added prequel. This books ends with a cliffy. One that fills the mind with all the scenarios that will be going forward. I loved this story and I can only imagine the depths that these two characters will be exposed too. While I’m a little nervous.......I know this journey will have Me on Edge the entire time.

Erotic.
Unexpected.
Introspective.
This first installment in the Edge series, explored the relationship of a newly married military couple, as they test new boundaries and limitations, with a special twist.
This one of those reviews where there is so little I can say about the story without giving things away. So, I'll try to be as vague as possible while convincing you why this new series is worth your time.
If you fell in love with the author's words in her debut Songs of Submission series, then this is for you. Although this series appears to be different, it carries the hallmark of what I loved about that series . . . the ability to turn me on. LOL! After reading hundreds of books, I've found myself skimming sex scenes. That is not the case with this author or this book. She has the ability in so few words to steam up my kindle. This book has a lot of erotic elements but in a very unexpected way.
Told in alternative POVs from Greyson and Caden, we follow the sexy highs and uncertain lows that this couple faces as they settle into their new lives. With the military backstory, there are a lot of potential directions this story can lead. Which direction that might be, I don't have a clue. As you'd expect from a novella type series, there is a pretty big cliffy that is also a HUGE twist. Reader beware.
I think this will be a great series for a buddy read (I texted my girl, Michelle, with questions, about 2 minutes after finishing). So grab a friend and get ready to dig in!!

HOLY ****, you guys! HOLY ****! Why the hell am I so surprised when CD Reiss knocks it out of the ****ing park?! I mean, she is a ROCK STAR when it comes to this type of mind-****ery, so I’m not sure why I was sitting their slack-jawed once I finished ROUGH EDGE. Reiss is no stranger to the darker side of romance, but Greyson and Caden’s beginning was no ****ing joke!
This is where I tell you that you absolutely need to pick up CUTTING EDGE, the prequel to The Edge Series. I’m pretty sure it’s FREE on all retailers, but it doesn’t matter because I believe it’s an ABSOLUTE MUST to dive into this first and cut your teeth on what CD Reiss is sure to do with your heart, body, and mind.
EXPLOSIVE! MONUMENTAL! INTENSE! RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING! I could go on an on about this phenomenal start to what is sure to be a TOP FAVORITE SERIES this year! There is just so much going on here emotionally, I’m not sure how I got through it without breaking a sweat, but I came close a couple times. Trust me when I say that CD Reiss is an author you NEVER want to pass up. She brings more than a story. She brings a ****ing experience of epic proportions! So read CUTTING EDGE and then sink your teeth into ROUGH EDGE and enjoy the EPIC thrill-ride! You might need a reading buddy to talk with afterwards because you are definitely going to need to decompress once you get through this masterpiece!

Admitting there is a problem. Identify the problem. Find solutions to the problem. This is how most surgeons and psychiatrists go at a problem, an illness, and injury. Caden and Greyson are no different in their respective professions. But in private, in their home, in their marriage things are not so simple. The massiveness of their problem is not easily contained in a textbook or a petri dish. It is huge. It is fierce. And it is out of the realm of normality. That is until it is faced and dealt a violent blow. Then they are normal again...until they aren't.
This story is not sweetness and light. It is not a fantasy romance. What it is is hard, violent, thought-provoking and will make you wonder about the sanity of the author and you as a reader. You will understand more if you read the Prequal; Cutting Edge. There you meet Caden, Greyson, and Ronin for the first time and will understand the dynamics of the relationships. Here you are taken to the after and will see a beautiful relationship that is also fierce, loving and strong. Wills are tested. Courage is tested. And the marriage ties are pulled so tight they could choke. I am so invested in this couple, their turmoil and in finding the answers they seek that I am preordering all of the rest of this series.
I hope my review did not turn you off because it is a fabulous thrilling and intensely great read. :)

I received a VERY early ARC from Ms. Reiss. Thank you Christine!
I am not going to give you much about book #1, yes I said book #1. Before you get your panties in a twist, if you have been living under a rock, this is a 4 book series. Each book will release three weeks apart. I don't want to read or hear any grumblings about cliffhangers. You've been warned and you all should be happy we're not waiting three months per book. Okay I feel so much better getting that out of my system.
Here's what I will say, you will meet Dr. Greyson Fraizer (she's a major in the Army) and Captain Caden St. John. Yes, I'm honestly doing a happy dance that she outranks her man. She's a shrink, he's a heart surgeon. They meet during the war in Iraq. Caden has been been back in NYC starting up his fellowship, after being honorably discharged, and Greyson is finally finishing her final tour and coming home to her man. Now to see if she can deal in being back to the civilian world.
So I am going to stop here. If you are fan of C.D. Reiss, hopefully you have read the Songs of Submission Series or even her Games duet. Hmmm how can I put this mildly ... you are all going to lose your mind with Rough Edge. It's SoS and Games duet on steroids, in the best possible way. It's definitely a lot more edgier and darker than the two series I mention above.
This is CD Reiss at her very best and she will not disappoint!

I. AM. EMOTIONALLY. EXHAUSTED.
Eight hours. Eight straight hours from ten a.m to 6p.m is what it took me to read this first installment in the Rough series.
It was like going back in time and falling in love with CD Reiss' writing all over again. This was classic Reiss. The teasing, the anticipation, the angst. The unconditional love. The inevitable suffering from that very love that holds our favorite characters together. All of it is within these very pages.
Every word and syllable, every vowel that is written in this story, felt like a warm blanket on my enraptured mind. Putting this book down was simply impossible, adulting be damned.
We meet Caden and Greyson. Both strong, successful characters whose only downfall is the depth of their love for each other. And yet, it's also the pillar that holds them strong.
War and tragedy bring them together but their marriage will be tested when the past comes floating into their present.
As usual, I refuse to give anything away concerning the story but I will say this: Rough Edge is, for me, a return to the very reason why I adore CD Reiss' writing.
There are't enough stars to quantify my love for this story.
You don't believe me? Here's proof: Rough Edge is now tied on my Reiss-scale with The Submission Series.
Yeah, it's THAT INCREDIBLY GOOD.

HOLY LORD ALMIGHTY! Christine has gone back to her dark ways, and I'm SO happy about it!
This review is going to be short because I REFUSE to give ANYTHING about this story away. It's THAT damn good!
If you've been a fan of hers for awhile, you know her ability to write sinfully dark and dominant alpha males. Caden may just be her dirtiest leading man yet. And I can't wait to get more of him!
Caden and Greyson. Two perfect, intense, sensually charged characters that will quite quickly become the center of your universe.
Caden and Greysons' story isn't straightforward. No. It's complex. Intense. Multi-faceted. Just when you think you are starting to figure them out, Christine puts her finger up and chuckles "not so fast".
This is book 1 in the Edge Series. If you're looking for a book that will captivate you from word one, start it now. If you like dark, twisted, scorching hot reads, download this book immediately. If you love being taken to the absolute edge, pushed to the very boundaries you never knew you had, tap that one-click button and start a journey that will rock your world.
So pour yourself a tall cold one - make sure you have plenty of ice because you'll need it - and dive in.

MIND. BLOWN.
I'm honestly still reeling from this book in the best possible way, and I really have to commend CD Reiss for writing such a compelling, intense, thought-provoking first book in The Edge series.
Rough Edge is the story of Greyson and Caden, a married couple who met and fell in love while in the military and are now starting to navigate civilian life together. Both are intelligent, successful (he's a surgeon and she's a psychiatrist), and devoted to one another, but there's more going on behind closed doors than meets the eye. I really don't want to spoil anything, but you need to read this. NEED TO. It offers a provocative glimpse into the marriage of two people deeply in love but who have to learn how to cope with the unexpected together. Their journey isn't easy, but it's charged with passion, commitment, and determination. I also appreciated the take on post-military life and how time at war impacts the men and women who serve. On top of all that, this book is so sexy that I found myself swooning and fanning myself multiple times.
Overall, this read was smart, sexy, and incredibly refreshing. I'm already getting antsy for the next in the series because I anticipate the books will only get better as the series progresses. Brava!

Brilliant! OMG!
When I applied to receive an ARC of this book, I imagined it would be my kind of book. Angsty, real, straight to the point.
I never EVER thought CD Reiss would leave me like this: absolutely speechless.
The blurb is fantastic but when I read it I never thought I was going to enter a rollercoaster.
This is a story of one of the most amazing female characters I’ve read about and her husband. I’m not going to say more because if I do you will miss the intensity of the story.
I entered blind folded and I’m happy with that.
CD Reiss has the ability of writing about strong characters. But Greyson & Caden’s story is leaving me breathless.
The sexual tension is disturbing. This is a powerful and heart-wrenching story that I highly recommend. But don’t forget: it ends in a cliff. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Prepare yourselves. Because it is impossible to remain indifferent to the feelings that this book awakens.

Shel: This book immediately grabbed my attention. I was curious about the timeline and the various plotlines with Greyson and Caden and their backgrounds and history, as well as what was going on with them now. I found myself deeper and deeper into the novel wanting answers and knowing I wouldn't get them. Wanting to prolong my reading but eager to see where this installment would end. This is a novel that is too easily spoiled and is best going in blind, in my opinion, because it just enhances the entire experience--as the characters were on edge, so was I. And that ending!!! I have so many questions. SO MANY. And I anticipate that I'll have several more before I get answers--that's the beauty and fun of this series--lots of wondering and wanting only to have the novel end and have to wait until the next one.
Shel: C.D. Reiss fans will recognize the stylistic qualities her novels tend to have--spare prose, brutal sexuality, passion, and lots of breadcrumbs left behind to lead you down the trail. In addition to those things, this novel felt like something different. The flashbacks and timeline and subject matter felt fresh and interesting and of course I'm super eager to get all the books in this series.

WOWZA! That was erotic, hot, and all sorts of mind blowing.
Caden is an enigma. A generous and compassionate husband on one end of the spectrum and a demanding, take charge alpha on the other. I had no idea what to expect since I went in blind, but holy wow did I get more than I bargained for.
Here's what I loved: It's the CD Reiss that I love! Dark and edgy. The book pushes past normal conventions of romance. If you're looking for sweet, this isn't it. I love flirting with the edge. Seeing what lurks underneath and in the shadows. That's exactly what Rough Edge gives the reader. I certainly got what I wanted.
The writing reflects the tone of the book. It's distinctive and feels like part of the experience.
The secondary characters and the conflict were the shining stars for me. Number one because I saw some diversity in the characters and secondly because I've never read anything like this before. It's intriguing and grabbed my attention like nothing else has in a long while. In a word, Amazing! The author didn't shy away from the tough topics in this one. I don't want to give anything away, so just read it and see for yourself. Recommended!

Rough Edge by C.D. Reiss is the first installment in her brand new The Edge Series. Rough Edge is one of the 4 books in this series and told in a dual POV.
Caden Frazier is a successful surgeon, he's ex-military, just like his wife, Greyson. She's just back from her last deployment and happy to start their life together.
Both love each other deeply. It takes them some time to get acquainted again - understandable. Both have issues, but Caden is haunted by demons. He - the surgeon who could emotionless handle every situation is losing his cool. " The Thing " is looming on the side.
Let me tell you, Rough Edge is a very fitting title, the story is raw and gritty and hard to read at times. The storyline jumps between past and present, the whole story is a mindfuge of epic proportions - masterfully crafted, thought out and written at the same time. I started reading and was hooked, thrilled, anticipated the worst and what can I tell, I was not disappointed.
And now I'm sitting here with a major book hangover and can't wait to get my hands on the next installment, On The Edge.
I recommend Rough Edge and give 5 dark stars.

Holy moly this was intense and filled with twists and turns. CD Reiss kept me on the edge of my seat leaving me questioning everything about Caden and Greyson. I enjoyed this couple and their dynamic. She’s a major and he’s a captain which was a cool surprise that she outranked him. Now that Greyson is home from war she’s working as a psychiatrist and Caden a heart surgeon. It takes time for her to get back to the civilian life and slowly things with Caden starts to change. That’s all I want to reveal. Their chemistry is off the charts and as the story unfolds so does their sexual needs. The heat and tension increased as well and I was entertained big time.
Rough Edge is the first book in a four book series and it was a fabulous introduction to this married couple. CD Reiss has laid a great foundation for the remaining books. She’s an expert when it comes to dark and edgy erotica and with Rough Edge she succeeds flawlessly.
I’m ready for more. More twists and delicious sexy scenes between Caden and Greyson. This is just the beginning and I couldn’t be happier.

Wow, this book really took me back to her original roots of the dark and the gritty. Ms. Reiss has such a beautiful way of writing her dark books that leave me at a stand still when reading them.
Caden and Greyson -- oh my god! These two were such a delight to read about. Who in their right mind would stick with someone who has such dark and sinister thoughts and who is rough as all hell! But Greyson loves Caden and will tolerate as much pain as she can. She understands him better than anyone. She's a psychiatrist, therefore she can understand what is happening to him. But she's not the right person to treat him.
I wasn't prepared for this magnificent book, but I was completely and totally invested in it. I am so thrilled to have had the chance to read this book and I can't wait to devour the whole series.
I am super excited to see where this is going and what's going to happen with Caden and Greyson. I love how twisted it is and I know Ms. Reiss will not DISAPPOINT!!
This book deserves and gets all the five stars it possibly can.

Wow! I am so Stunned! Rough Edge was nothing like I was expecting. It was raw and intense, dark and heart pounding. I loved it! Caden and Grey have a strong connection, an all consuming bond. But what happens when that bond is tested, in the most terrifying way? I am so completely speechless. This book was absolutely mind blowing! I read the prequel first so I had some back story on these two characters, I think thats important so you know how they were. These two characters have been through things some people never will go through and they are both driven and passionate. I loved how deeply they love one another. I was so consumed by their story and just completely mindf*cked. I can't stop thinking about them! It's a griping story that will leave you with mixed emotions and need to know more. I am dying to know what happens now, what is next? Ahhh!!! Reiss you have ruined me with this dark and twisted tale full of love and lust! Hands Down the Best book I've read this year! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

CD Reiss delivers a story that feels original. One that will mess with your mind. This isn't the heart and flowers romance. Rough Edge needs to be experience.
Caden is intense, dominant, the definition of an alpha male. There is something stirring within him and we just scratched the surface. I think there's more to him and I can't wait to find out. Grayson's love for her husband has no boundaries. When Caden needs her, she's willing to do anything, even if it means he'll push her far. I loved how understanding and accepting she is.
The intensity of the sex/love scenes was off the charts making them both erotic and beautifully dark. Reiss writes them amazingly good. She know s the right amount of pain and pleasure to give. I love her style and how consent was given. The last ten percent of the book was the most intense. Everything lead to the mind blowing cliffy, which had me saying WHAT THE...AHH! It will have readers eagerly anticipating the next book. I need the next book now!

Caden is intense, dominant, the definition of an alpha male. There is something stirring within him and we just scratched the surface. I think there's more to him and I can't wait to find out. Greyson, a military psychiatrist, is now a civilian, settling into a new life, in a new city with her new husband, Caden, a heart surgeon whom she met while they were both deployed in Iraq. Caden’s love for Greyson is so clear, he may be one of the most romantic characters I’ve read in a long time. But Caden is starting to think there is something wrong with him and we have to wonder if Greyson can help him.
This book blew my mind! It was everything. Not only did it keep me on the edge of my seat, it was passionate, hot as hell, exciting in every way, intriguing, heartbreaking, and a total mind bender. It left me questioning everything and wanting so much more, eagerly anticipating the next installment. Good thing we only have a few weeks to wait because I won’t stop thinking about Caden and Greyson the entire time. This is CD Reiss at her best, as hot as the Submission series with shades of Marriage Games on steroids. One of my top reads of 2018!

This book immediately grabbed my attention.

HOLY HECK!!! This book was AMAZING!!! The writing was atmospheric & HOT!!! It worked so well due to the connection between Greyson & Caden. The story had flashbacks that helped to layer the story. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down!!! It had a mystery element and the ending was....!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT wait for the next book!!!!
“Our life together will be built into the best from what survived the worst.”
“We held each other tight, and I felt safe starting a new life with him.”
“I always put the right feelings in the right boxes and slid the deadbolt closed until I needed them.”
“If I could build a wall around this feeling, hem it in, maybe I could identify it and throw it away.”
“Sister, dear, you are the most competent person I know. That’s the only reason you’re doubting your competence. We doubt what we’re gifted with.”

I’m a little bit gobsmacked. Shell shocked even.
Christine Reiss what have you done? You’ve only gone and left me mind blown again. When I read Marriage Games I didn’t sleep for weeks. I worried about Diana. My lovely Huntress. I already know I won’t sleep tonight. Caden! Captain, my captain.
It is unusual for a book of this genre to begin with a couple already married and a couple who are so utterly, bonkersley in love. Jeez, the love between Grayson and Caden is a living breathing thing. Rough Edge isn’t an easy read, it makes you question right and wrong and what real love is. Then it flips you upside down and spanks your bottom. But my word CD Reiss really can write. And gah I am so hooked. Not since Never Never by Hoover and Fisher have I conjured up so many conspiracy theories. Thank goodness for the spoiler group.
Phenomenal. I can’t wait for more.

I giddily reviewed an ARC.
That giddinesseventuall warped into someone that sent my head into a tailspin.
Once again, CD Reiss has weaved a tale like none other. Sometimes I wonder what goes on in her head. How can she do this to us every. time?
Greyson, our leading lady, is smart and supportive and wonderfully depraved. I love when women are written with this dark, unashamed sexuality that is raw and uncut. Her willingness to "go there" once Caden's beautifully dark side reveals itself is breathtaking.
Caden, whatever is truly going on with him, has shown a side that is filled with a burning need that only his wife can fulfill. The question on their minds: when is a limit just an arbitrary line in the sand?
Being that this is a series, I expected CD to leave us hanging, but oh boy, what was that?????
Mind. Blown.

Disturbing, humane and dark, this is a love story that will keep you thinking.
As the description says these are two lovers who embark on married life full of hope. They are both veterans of the war and all that encompasses. Now that they are civilians, adjustments to life at home is part of their journey.
The confounding part is how these two characters were affected by the war or prior trauma to the point their married life is being controlled by overbearing feelings and responses neither one of them considered part of their normal character. This is the beginning of their journey to find out about themselves, preserve their marriage, and stay alive.
This is a series but I fully recommended. This is a journey to the dark side of your psyche.
I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Thank you to the author for sharing a copy with me.

Holy moses, CD Reiss is back with a vengeance! Rough Edge is book one in the four book series. This is CD Reiss at her best, dark and twisted. If you are fan of the Songs of Submission series, this is one up. One up the intensity, one up the sanity, one up the rough edge. I may have been a little blown away.
Dr. Greyson Frazier, MD has finished her final tour as a Major in the army to return to her husband, Caden St. John, heart surgeon and former Captain. Greyson's world was turned around after leaving the army, not only did she have to get used to civilian life and to her new home in New York but she has to get used to being married. As it turns out there's more to her husband than meets the eye.
The story holds dark secrets. Secrets that have me on edge. I can't wait for the next book. The Queen is back and turning our worlds upside down. 5 Stars.

My gut reaction in composing a review for Rough Edge... "girl, just read this book if you want a spectacular mindf#@k! Also, if you enjoy anxiety attacks. Fair warning...one-handed read so don't read this in public. Or with pants on." However, since I am a lady(LMAO) and a little more articulate than my base instincts, let me elaborate for you. OG (original gangster) CD Reiss is back with a vengeance. This is the CD I fell in love with with The Submission Series. Sprinkled in with some Marriage Games fun. I seriously could not put this book down. When I was finished, it was all I could think about for days. l ended up re-reading it immediately after I took 2 days to let it sink in. I am so overjoyed to have THIS CD back in the wheelhouse. I am dying for more, I will be patient; but it's literally eats away at my soul to have to wait.

My head is still spinning DAYS after reading Rough Edge. C.D. Reiss unfolds Greyson and Caden’s love story in such a brilliant and meticulous manner that I felt hypnotized by her words, and I caught myself white-knuckling my Kindle as their compelling and complex relationship evolved. I could have never predicted the twists and turns of this story, because they are mind-blowing, jaw-dropping and, frankly, outmatch my intelligence. Reiss interweaves provocative romance and psychological thriller producing and unforgettable, words-can’t-describe reading experience, and she proves why her storytelling is in a league of its own.
I cannot imagine what is in store for us in the next three books, and I cannot wait to find out.
ARC provided, but this review was voluntarily and honestly written.

I’m speechless...I need a support group and the next book ASAP. I don’t know what the heck I just read!! I’m confused, and intrigued, and well...confused!! What l happened?? How can CD leave us like this??? I need answers, I need an explanation, I need MORE!!
Caden and Greyson are going through so many things at the same time: getting used to a new life as a civilian, a new marriage, a new job, and the biggest issue of all which I shouldn’t say because..spoilers... and you get a formula for disaster and a failed marriage. But they both are so in love with each other that their sacrifices for making each other happy is very humbling.
I love both characters sooo much!! I seriously cannot wait to see them get their HEA. I hope they have a HEA...right CD Reiss?? RIGHT.????

Aaaahhhh..... A new series from C.D. Reiss, The Edge Series, YES YES YES!!!!
Rough Edge (The Edge #1), Greyson and Caden, their undeniable love and marriage grew out of the ashes of the devastation of a War! But now as they face a civilian life where their love and marriage should blossom and flourish their minds/bodies and love/marriage will instead fight the ultimate WAR, a WAR unlike any they've faced before!!!
This is book 1 and right from the beginning my senses were tingling with anticipation while I was in a constant state of mind-numbing-bending-blowing fascination and it never let up to the very last words.... And those last words have left me dangling from a dark, beautiful, jagged ROUGH EDGE!!!!!
WHEW, insanely-erotic-mind-twisting-masterpiece!!!!!

Please RateRough Edge: (The Edge #1)
Drs. Grayson Frazier and Caden St.John are army doctors. He's a heart surgeon while she's a psychiatrist. They both finish their service and settle in Manhattan. Enviabley sexy, handsome couple, so deeply in love, considerate of each other's feelings, life should be smoothly successful and abundant for them.
“You know what I see when I look at you?”
“Your wife?”
“The worst decisions I’ve ever made, I made for a reason.
You. You rose out of the destruction.
Our life together will be built into the best from what survived the worst.”
Alas, the dark memories of war somehow tentacle their way round their everyday peaceful existence and they start to grow into an entity that settles itself in the midst of their coupling like a third THING. It has it's own hunger, own agenda and own triggers. It grows and howls, remains in the periphery and sometimes jumps in their bodies to create havoc.
Every day, it got a little stronger. Every day I was a little more tense, a little more afraid , a little more uncomfortable. The Thing got harder to box away and cart off. Harder to hide behind a wall. Impossible to ignore . I was pressed in on all sides by a Thing I couldn’t even define.
I don't wanna give anything away, since the essence of psychological thriller is in the mystery.
Christine is exploring very unpropitious territory. There are no set rules and limits, symptoms and cures(if there are any) are on case to case basis. The dark presence in this book, is very edgy, violent and though not malefic yet, is inauspicious for their marriage.
Every thought walked a razor’s edge between sanity and insanity, and the edge kept moving until I didn’t know which side was which.
How will it pan out and how will the "exorcism", for want of better word, take place, will keep me on tenterhooks. Cannot wait for book 2.
Just my own experience, maybe it's the first of 4 books, or the topic is very new and unrelatable to me, I felt a disconnect.
A remarkable start to a undoubtedly very tense story. Dealing with veritable disorder, very significant and very current, sometimes object of prejudice or ridicule, in some inappropriate hands, but I'm sure I'll emerge as a better informed reader and more knowledgeable about the dangerous traumas that are byproducts of uneccessary wars.
