Charles Henderson must have had a difficult time weeding through years of information ,stories and documented deeds. The author presented the story in a technical but interesting way. Carlos was always a good man and an exceptional Marine. This book is an excellent biography and just a great story

Awesome book about a legendary sniper. Great insight as to what a sniper went through in Vietnam. Without the high tech equipment of today, Hathcock proves himself to be one of the greatest U.S. military snipers of all time.

Excellent. The voluntary journey of a real life hero into the lions den. Unlike our safe space, perpetually offended snowflakes of today, he epitomizes the American spirit, courage, and ingenuity of a freedom loving American. Poltroons need not apply. SEMPER FI!!!

This is the story of the beginning of the American military sniper program and one of the key players in making it happen. Entirely a good read about a remarkable military career and the personal costs of such a career.

I really enjoyed this book. Sometimes it is nice to read books and not have to figure out the deeper meaning. This book takes you inside the physical and mental regiment of a marine sniper. I had heard a lot about the qualities of this group but till I read this book, I never understood the abilities these soldiers have. I think the only thing that bothers me , is what happens to these men when they come back into everyday society. I will say this, it is good to know that in time of war that there are men who are willing to do this lonely job and who save the lives of fellow soldiers. Read this book if you want a real insight into the job a sniper does.

This book held my interest from beginning to almost the end. I wish the book would have ended when he was discharged from the Marines the first time, returning home from Vietnam. From that point on, it was rather depressing to read how his life deteriorated. However, I recommend the book as it describes the mentality and fortitude of a true sniper.

This book tells the REAL story of Haycock, the marine sniper from Viet Nam. It clearly shows the sacriifices that our service men have made so that we can be safe here at home. It will make you question many of the things being done to degrade the military today and take away their benefits. If you are happy with that scenario, then shame on you. READ THE BOOK!

Wonderful factual account of extraordinary service in the Vietnam War. Well written and apparently well researched. This book demonstrates the hardships endured by our military men over the many years of the Vietnam struggle and demonstrates-without pressing-the whole concept of post traumatic stress. Thank Heavens for men like this. What an extraordinary sacrifice.

Interesting insight into the origins of the modern Marine sniper, especially in the era of Vietnam.
This book is written more like a novel about a sniper than a formal autobiography, and at times I found it a little corny, but the story itself is engaging from a military buff's point of view...
If you've ever wanted to be a sniper, this is a good book to read.

The intensity, skill, ability, and focus of this Marine, Carlos Hathcock, is well written and documented. This book makes for an inspirational and informative read. Respect for the challenges of battle and the decisions required to endure and overcome the nightmare of war. Thankful for troops who dedicate themselves with such courage.

This is an exceptional book about an exceptional US Marine Hero. A true story that surpasses "American Sniper". This WAS the forerunner and Carlos in Vietnam set the standard for today's snipers, today's heros. A Must Read.

Absolutely a well written, fantastic read. It's always nice to read a real hero story but some books don't do the story justice. This book does a fantastic job of telling the story. I now understand why Carlos Hathcock II is still considered the greatest American sniper even now even amongst his modern day peers.

Carlos Hathcock II became a legend in his own time. He was a unique embodiment of all of the psychological and physical skills of the misunderstood and maligned (by the ignorant) science of the military sniper. His dedication to his task and his compassion for his fellow marines made him a hero. Henderson has conveyed the story of an ordinary man who repeatedly performed extraordinary feats of arms in a biography that allows the reader to see Hathcock's life and some of his amazing missions through his eyes. Un-put-down-able.

Carlos Hathcock was a Marine's Marine. Not only did the Marines define Carlos, Carlos defined the Marines. On Carlos' first deployment he initially served as an MP. Carlos then served under Capt Edward Land who was instrumental in starting the Marines Scout Sniper program. Carlos was an early attendee of the program and flourished.
Briefly, here is a guy who has recorded the fifth longest kill in sniper history, one shot from a scoped Browning M2 machine gun. Carlos also has one of the so-called shots. I always thought the scene in the movie Saving Private Ryan (great movie) where their platoon sniper killed a german sniper by shooting him in eye thru the scope was awsome. Carlos MADE that shot in Vietnam. Read the book and you will read this and countless other seemingly impossible scenarios. Author, Charles Henderson does a great job relating the intricacies of Carlos' life. The insertion, stalk and extraction concerning the NVA General is priceless.

Marine Sniper:
It reminds me of my time in Vietnam. Some of the outfits mentioned in
the book I was familiar with. I think each Marine and Hospital Corpsman.
that has served in Vietnam should read the book. It does bring back
some memories, that after all these years have been forgotten.

Well written & exciting account of an incredible soldier. The qualities required to be a successful sniper are many. Marksmanship, patience, perseverance & stamina are necessary just to face the rigours of the job. More important is an absolute belief that God is on your side in your endeavours because the bottom line for the sniper is to become accustomed to life as a cold-blooded killer. Sight an unsuspecting victim, draw down on him & kill him. Few men could face a job like that & fewer could perform it better than Hathcock. It is a page turner! It gives a good insight into the physical & mental challanges he faced & I do recommend the book.

Having served with the United States Marines during this time, I remember hearing the tales about the sniper known as "white feather". This books tells about him, he was and still is the greatest sniper in the military history.....did his shooting in the jungles of Vietnam against well trained north vietnamese troops.

Good book, especially eye-opening for those of us who grew up during Vietnam War. Makes you realize how bad it really was over there for our soldiers and how much the television news did not cover or show us. Well written.

I've been meaning to read Marine Sniper for years, but never got around to it. Then when I finished Chris Kyle's book I looked around for others to read, of the same genre.
Carlos Hathcock's story was one that was engrossing, and yet easy to read. It was hard for me to put the book down, probably because I am from the Vietnam era. Many of the separate stories I could relate to because I heard the names before.

I found this book very exciting and suspensfull when it came to the sniping feats of Carlos Handcock. He immediately becomes your hero and you feel like your there with him. The book also found me very sad and sorry for him because of his accident and the way his body began deteriorating. In the end though your relieved to find him at peace with himself and determined to conquer his newest challenge. A truly great American hero.

Mr. Hathcock was a true American hero and the author does an excellent job of allowing the reader to get to know this national treasure and gain appreciation for all of his sacrifices. Mr. Hathcock faced true evil in the Apache Woman. Her actions were shocking and inhuman and he pursued this evil and eradicated to save his fellow Marines. The chapters where he takes on the Apache Woman, the Frenchman, the Cobra, and the general are straight out of Hollywood and then when you realize he really did these things...WOW. Clint Eastwood needs to make a Carlos Hathcock movie.

Great book. Tells the story of Hathcock as a person and as a sniper. Paired with Silent Warrior a more complete story of Hathcock can be appreciated. Both books are great on their own but each filled in some gaps that the other leaves.

Great book about an individual that was born to be a sniper. Almost like spending the time with the sniper in his hide out waiting for an unsuspecting enemy to pass through his sights. Gives great insight into the feeling of peering through a rifle scope watching an individual unsuspecting that he/she is spending the last moments of their life on earth. Great accounting of the honorable manner in which this soldier conducted himself in a tough situation in the unpopular war in Vietnam.

An excellent read! I met Sergeant Hathcock at a gun show and book signing in Houston Texas. You could tell he was a special person. Just looking in his eyes you could see the strenght and resolve he had. This book goes into detail about what it takes to be a sniper. He went after the enemy in his world and won! Being a Viet Nam vet myself I can relate to a lot of what he says. I would highly recommend this book.

This is a "must read" for anyone interested in military history. Carlos Hathcock--the subject of this book--is a true American hero. It's well-written and transports the reader back in time...you can FEEL what it was like in Vietnam through Carlos' eyes and the words on paper.

Fast read. Amazing story. If you are looking for something fast to read, a real page turner or waiting for one of your library books that you have on hold, like I was, this is a great read. I bought it on Kindle for only a few dollars.

Having heard of Carlos over the years I wanted to read this book to get a better understanding of who he was! I don't recommend this book to the faint at heart cause some parts are pretty graphic but I do recommend it to anyone that's wanting to learn about him or the Vietnam war!

I am an avid long range shooter who has attempted some of the long range shots discussed in the book....but in the comfort of the range, on my own time, not wet and cold and hungry and without having 200 Viet Cong staring me down from the other side of 600 yards. One guy + spotter holding down a large contigent of enemy soldiers to the point they could smell their excrement....unbelievable. If you have ever crawled in mud to take the shot, his description is just like being there. The best sniper book I have read, period. Check out some of the interviews with Hathcock on YouTube and he re-tells some of these stories in his own words. Shame the Corps didn't give him his 30 years. He paid for it by getting 93 kills in an average of 2-3 shots per kill, versus 50,000 rounds per kill average in Vietnam.
