My son enjoyed reading this book. Even got it signed by the author at a reading at our local library. She was really nice and seemed to enjoy her time with the kids. My son wants all the "I Survived" books.

Great realistic stories that are educational and entertaining. My kids have really enjoyed the entire series and finish the book with a better understanding of the events and actions involved, without feeling like they are sitting in a classroom listening to lecture.

Book Report by Jacob

Title: I Survived
The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941
Author: Lauren Tarshis

This is my first book report so forgive me if it goes a little off track. I usually find it hard to choose to read over other activities such as watching TV or playing outside, so finding a book was more of a stab in the dark. The cover illustration seemed exciting enough with battleships on fire and a boy running from fighter planes. Sold! This book was exciting from the very beginning. In the first chapter the main character, Danny who is 11, finds himself out in the open running from Japanese bomber planes.

The story takes place more than 70 years ago on Hawaii near a military air base next to Pearl Harbor. It is sunny there with both yellow flowers and palm trees and from Danny's house you can clearly see a view of Pearl Harbor with nearly 100 warships. Around the world at the same time, there were two major wars with both Japan and Germany invading surrounding countries. The United States was not at war, yet. This story begins 2 days before the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan.

Danny is originally from New York City. There he had learned to live in a tough city environment but he had friends and none closer than his best friend Finn. They could get themselves into trouble but always had each others back. That changed one day when they both were playing on a fire escape and Finn fell 15 feet to the ground below. Danny's mom was worried that Danny needed to be in a safer place and so she got a nursing job at Hickam air base on Hawaii. Moving away from his friend was very hard on Danny. He felt like he abandoned his hurt friend when Finn needed him the most. This creates the main conflict in the story as Danny plans how to sneak back to his old city and more importantly his best friend.

On the very morning that Danny wanted to sneak on a ship back to the mainland, Aki, a young neighborhood boy, points to the sky and tells Danny, "Planes." Within moments the sounds of war are everywhere. Now instead of plotting an escape to New York he finds himself fighting to survive the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Right away Danny's concerns change from his friend in New York to finding his Mom who is already at work on the air base. Running from airplane gun fire and ducking bombs being dropped all around, Danny, with the help of soldiers he finds on his way, races to get to his Mom at the hospital. At the hospital Danny finds his Mom and while she was not hurt, he sees that she is franticly trying to save many injured soldiers from the attack.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Danny realizes that what he wanted most was no longer going back to New York but instead to stay in Hawaii with his Mom. To Danny, losing a friend was hard but his Mom was worth crossing a war zone.

I liked the book and would recommend it to other kids who like action to keep them interested.

There are 17 books in the I Survived series. Each book tells a fictional account of a historical event through the eyes of a child eyewitness. The series is well researched and age appropriate for middle grade students. From modern events like 9/11 and the Joplin, MO tornado to more ancient disasters like the destruction of Pompeii, the series gives historical facts and tells great fictional accounts for kids.

I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor is the 4th book in the series. Danny Crane and his mother just moved from New York to Hawaii. His mother works as a nurse at the military base hospital. Danny misses his best friend Finn, who was severely injured in an accident just before they moved from NYC. He's feeling a bit lonely when he meets a young Japanese boy, Aki. Aki introduces Danny to his mother. The next day Aki comes to Danny's house early, saying he hears airplanes. The Japanese are bombing the Harbor. Can Danny survive and find his mother at the hospital?

I like this series. The books would definitely be useful in a classroom situation for reluctant readers or to teach/supplement history lessons. The stories are action-packed and interesting. The cover art is definitely eye-catching.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story. Narrated by Michael Goldstrom, the audio is just over an hour long. Goldstrom reads at a nice pace with good inflection. I have hearing loss but was easily able to hear and understand the audio.

I will definitely be reading more of this series. I like to read children's books as a break from adult literature. Sometimes I just like to read for enjoyment and want a short book for a relaxing reading break. This series fit that need perfectly. The books are well-written and interesting but short enough to be a quick, easy read.

For adults reading this series, always keep in mind that this series is written for children. The length is shorter, details softened a bit, and the main characters are children. Don't expect in-depth more adult coverage of these historical events as adults are not the target audience for this series.

Review by ERB....The pearl harbor book is about a boy named Danny who was a city kid but sooner or later his mother suggest going to pearl harbor. Later on something actually makes Danny scared. Begin: Danny's mom suggest going to pearl harbor. Danny wants to go back to new York. Danny's mom goes to work and Danny is at his house but he is outside. Danny sees a kid with a baby boar. Danny has to save the little kid by giving the boar back to his mom. Then Danny returns the kid back to his mom but gets dragged to stay.
Middle: Danny plays with the little kid for a while and starts kind of wishing he could draw he can! But barely. The Japanese and Germany start planning their attack! Danny sees a picture of the little kid's dad's drawing. It had a bunch of planes the little kid's favorite one was B-17! Christmas Day: Japan starts their attack! Danny is shocked 100%! Danny is now truly afraid. Danny runs as fast as he could away. But something in his gut makes him go back! Danny runs back as fast as he can but as soon as he starts meets his mom's friend Mack. Danny and Mack drive as fast a possible to get to his mom. Mack ends up getting hurt... BAD he was in great pain Danny picks up Mack and a few other hurt people to the hospital Danny finds his mom and they both hug. End: Everybody starts healing up Danny and his mom go back home and relax Danny gets a few words to slip out of his mouth "I would like to stay" Danny's mom makes a small really happy smile and they both relax until next time. That was my second book report about pearl harbor. :D

Hi I have a book recommendation for you, I SURVIVIVED the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. I like this book because it tells you about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and it really makes me want to read more and more. One reason is because I like the pictures, another reason is because it really brings you in the book, another reason is because it tells a really good story. Also I like it because it tells you a lot about The Bombing of Pearl Harbor. The author of The Bombing of Pearl Harbor is Lauren Tarshis, I really like it because it has a lot of action. One of my favorite characters is Danny. I like Danny because he thinks about other people more than himself, he is brave but he says you have to be crazy not to be scared, and I agree, because he is risking his life! He is nice too. Aki is a character I like too, he really likes the battle ships and war-planes. To me it is a very interesting book. Danny’s teacher is Mrs. Mills. Danny’s best friend is Finn. They live in Pearl Harbor. This is non-fiction and these characters are made up, but it tells a lot about the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. I like the all the characters. The main character is Danny. Did you know that there is a whole series of I SURVIVED books? I hope if you get one you read it and enjoy it.

By:Lauren Tarnish

The main character is Danny. Danny is a good friend . It seems like Danny has lots of friends. The thing i liked about this book is that it has good information about what happened in Pearl Harbor and has good interesting facts. When i read this book i thought it was going to be boring but it turned out to be a really interesting book. Now i really enjoy reading the i survived books.I think that kids from the grades of 5-7 should read these book. I also think that they should read these books because it is really useful if they do a project on the Holocaust it has good information on the Holocaust. This is why i think that the kids from the grades of 5-7 should read this book.

It was 1941 December 7th the bombing of Pearl Harbor. An 11 year old boy named Danny is right in the middle of it. Danny was a strong and smart kid. This book is one of my favorite books. In this book there are 86 pages and 14 chapters. In this book there are 6 characters Danny, Danny’s mom, Aki, Aki’s mom, Aki's dad and Mack. This book is great and awesome. I recommend this to kids that like history and action.

i used some portions for my class room instruction. I was disappointed that the plot revolved around a family breakup, thus not promoting the family values I believe children's litterature should be fostering.

My son brought home this book home from his public school library. He is in 3rd grade. I found the writing to be perfectly fine in technique, but the content was historically misleading and I must say I am disappointed in the book. While there is nothing in it that is historically inaccurate, it is woefully incomplete. The only negative moral judgements that I found in the text were the arrest of a casual artist by U.S. personnel and the notorious internment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry by the U.S. Government.

There was no mention of the attack being perpetrated without a declaration of war. This was a hugely important component of the conflict, and rightly enraged the U.S. citizenry of the day. Although the internment was elaborated upon, which lasted for the war's duration, there was no counterbalancing mention of improper actions undertaken by the Japanese Empire of that time, some of which can only be described as abhorrent. I do not mean to suggest that graphic details of these events should be presented to a very young reader, but a more complete historical penumbra (at the very least) is called for here, and it is absent.

War is hell, and this book does a good job describing it in terms the young reader will understand. Nevertheless, this is an incomplete look at "A date which will live in infamy". And that is a grievous error.

Revision: The fact of the attack being launched without a declaration of war is covered, however, this factor is not explored even though it set the tenor of the war.
