This book is so good for someone who is facing a big change or needing direction in life. It really encouraged me to go for my "big dream" and it helped me know how to handle those forces that come against me as I do so.

I totally loved this book. It had such a good message about how your dreams can come true. The challenges that you may face along the way and how your faith in God will help you overcome any obstacles that are blocking the path to your dreams.

This is a great read, especially if you are feeling discouraged. Wilkinson's use of the parable allows one to see life circumstances that stop us from following one's dreams in a whole different light.

Bruce again simplifies too much and makes this seem like the miracle answer to every Christians life - like the Prayer of Jabez. He never addresses the question for those who have big dreams, but are dealt horrible blows by life that leave those dreams unattainable. This happens much in the body of believers, or anybody for that matter.....

This book made me look at the dreams I have forgotten in my life. I need to look at them and start dreaming again at the age of 59. I know God has a plan for my life and my desire is to follow that plan.

I found the Dream Giver (the book) trite and bad fiction that obscures Wilkinson's simple message. However, this audio CD, drawn from a series of speeches, is powerful. Rather than conveying his message thru trite fiction, he tells real stories about his own life and others in a way that is powerful and convincing.

Thought Provoking

This well thought out book helps anyone to understand that we are special and as unique as our own fingerprints. It's a blessing to be reminded that God does in fact have a gift, purpose and destiny in all of us and if we add faith to our knowledge, we can find that dream and obtain it.

My main issue with this book is the bullying part. Some people need to be told what they are doing is stupid. Sorry! I worry that if they read this book they will look at someone really trying to give them some good advice as a bully. It is a free license to run nilly willy after every dream you can concoct up and anyone who is trying to help you is doing it because they are a bully. I would have been more impressed with "Get off your tail and do some work", "Stop talking about it and start working on your dream", or better yet "Make your dream something that glorifies God"

I bought THE DREAM GIVER many years ago as a hard cover book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It resonates deeply within me, so much so that once I had a KINDLE FIRE HDX I bought THE DREAM GIVER as an ebook. As a truck driver, I plug my KINDLE FIRE HDX into the truck's radio and employ the text-to-speech feature to listen to ebooks while I drive. I would give five stars if it had text-to-speech. I don't have time to read it outright. I wish I had noticed that nothing was mentioned in the book's details about text-to-speech.

My Bishop had us read this book for Bible Study. It is an easy read for all ages and gives you something to think about. This book has revived my dreams. The author does an excellent job tying in biblical principles. It was a page turner for me.

Great book! One of my college administrators told me to read this book. This book explains that the vision God gives you may not be for the place in which you are currently living. Shortly after reading this book and graduating from college, I moved to Houston TX. It was the best thing I could've ever done for myself. God has begin to manifest all of my dreams! Something that would never have happened if I would've stayed in my small hometown.

This book is one large oversimplification of "how to live life." The author assumes everyone is like him and treats everyone who isn't like him as mundane, do-nothing people. He creates a narrative that says nothing more than "This way of relating to God is the only way". It has about the depth, and literary competence, of a fiction made for primary school children.

Don't waste your time and money on this.

Although someone I know recommended this book, I had no idea it was so God/Jesus centric until after I had purchased it. Been there done that... and am done with that. I only read about a third of it before abandoning the effort, but if you believe in the fairy tale of God and his boy, Jesus, then maybe you'll appreciate this book more than I did... but if you don't, you most likely won't.

I'm really loving this book. A group of women from my church are working through it as our current Book Club selection. I find that it is helping me to clarify where God wants me.

---I find that I need to revise my previous comment (above). I have recently discovered that Mr. Wilkinson, although he is likely a Christian, also espouses New Age teachings, so reader beware. If you choose to read this book, please pray for great discernment.---

The Dream Giver was published in 2003, but only made it into my hands on Christmas morning 2009. There must be something in the air, so to speak, with the simultaneous Christmas release of the movie Up in the Air. I saw the movie first, before reading this short book. Together they have reminded me to make sure I am following my own Big Dream.

The movie is about people losing their jobs, and being encouraged to use job loss as momentum and opportunity to pursue long forgotten dreams. The book's character, "Ordinary", starts from a place of discomfort, with the "small nagging feeling that something big was missing". The movie and the book each show the sacrifices involved in following a dream, and the persistence required.

The movie is supposed to be funny, but turns out to be rather sad. The main character follows his own dream, but when he gets there, he finds there is nothing to say. The book, though, is hopeful, despite the challenge of facing Giants and Bullies, as the Dream Giver is always present.

I have difficulty separating the movie and the book in my mind. Together the message is clear. Big Dreams are worth following, and it is never too late to begin.

The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson is a book that challenges one to chase after their dreams. I purchased this book over eight years ago while I was in college, and I remember thinking how can someone ever stop chasing their dream. Now eight years later in my 30's doing the same thing day after day in corporate america, I can easily see how easy it is to lose sight of the dreams we have and settle into what we think is reality.

The author starts off telling a fictional tale to get his point across and to explain the challenges we are faced with when chasing after our dreams. The second part of the book is really what makes the book great. The author gives his own guidance and biblically shows us how to act on our dreams. He uses many personal examples of his own fears towards achieving his goals. He explains how his fear of public speaking almost kept him from becoming a pastor, but overcoming those fears allows him to speak to thousands at one time.

I also love how he puts dreams into perspective. He emphasizes that dreams are not there to provide us comfort and security once achieved. God can easily give us another dream, and take away the old dream to continue our need of placing complete faith in him.

One last quote I loved comes from an unknown friend. The author asks his friend who has PHd in leadership development (who knew there was such a degree), what is the most important secret to developing world-class leaders? His friend responds, "Well it's not in a course, a lecture, or a book." His friend goes onto explain what does create great leaders. Pickup the book and start forming a Dream.

The first 1/2 of "The Dream Giver" starts out as a parable much like in the form of the Christian class "Pilgram's Progress". The second 1/2 closes with encouragements and practical applications to live out the dream that God has for you.

Some of the points covered in the book include:

1. Giants of opposition you will face in wanting pursue your dream.
2. How to deal with those giants of opposition.
3. How times of opposition can strengthen and encourage you to live out your dream.
4. The importance of being around people who can help you pursue your dream.
5. Encouragement to obey and trust God instead of yourself and others and do not let fear keep you from pursuing your dream.

The next to last chapter lists questions from acual people who want to pursue their dream but are unsure as to how to best pursue it. Wilkinson addresses the quesions in a practical and easy-to-understand manner.

I highly recommend the Dream Giver to anyone who is tired of living the status quo and is wanting to step out and try something new in God's power and strength.

Read and enjoy!

The Dream Giver proves to be a book that it is as equally inspiring and thought-provoking as it is short and compact. Told in the form of an allegory of an individual named Ordinary, The Dream Giver takes him on a journey from his land of Familiar and away from his Comfort Zone into the land of the unknown as he pursues his Dream. As Ordinary disembarks on his journey in pursuit of his Dream, he is confronted by Border Bullies (people you know who try to, in one way or another, deter you from your dream, and Giants, or obstacles that one must confront on one's way to fulfillment of one's Big Dream.
While everyone has a Dream, Wilkinson points out, not everyone follows through with it due to all of the foreboding obstacles, perseverance, and imminent confrontation that it will entail in achieving it. Leaving one's Comfort Zone, and the stability and peace of mind that accompanies it, seems to be the most difficult course of all. Once abandoned, Wilkinson says, one will doubtless encounter alarmists, defeatists, and antagonists who will try with reckless abandon to halt your progress for one reason or the other including being motivated by fear of your failure -- as well as fear of your success. Giants, such as lack of resources, an immovable bureaucracy, & physical burdens must be conquered on the way as well. While all of this may seem perhaps idealistic and simplistic to some(and it is at times), The Dream Giver is nonetheless a great read that will, if nothing else, surely open your eyes and make you take a second look at everything around you in your current milieu - and, at best, could possibly change your life. Have faith in God and abandon fear all ye who enter here.

This book is three masterpieces wrapped into one. Part one is the Parable of the Dream Giver, the story of a Nobody named Ordinary who leaves the Land of Familiar to pursue his Big Dream. We all have been born with a Big Dream, a gift from the Dream Giver. Often we lose sight of that Big Dream, or crumble under obstacles that seem insurmountable.
Through this parable, Wilkinson walks us through the stages of living that Big Dream: embracing the Dream, leaving our Comfort Zone to pursue it, meeting discouraging Bullies along the way, entering a Wasteland of delays and disappointment that test our faith, finding Sanctuary where we solidify the purpose of our Big Dream, warring with Giants for the Dream Giver's honor, and finally thriving in the Land of Promise.
Part two is the Journey to Your Big Dream, and is much more than an explanation of part one. Wilkinson acts as our "Dream Coach", supplying a solid foundation for applying the lessons learned through the parable. He relates personal experiences and answers questions from real readers. With the turn of every page I was able to identify and address my own personal obstacles that have held me back from my Big Dream.
The Dream Giver will help you identify where you have been, where you are today, and where you are headed. It will equip you for part three, which is beyond the covers of this book. Part three is where your personal adventure begins, as you take up your quill and pursue your own Big Dream for God's glory. If you are ready to begin your quest, then you are ready for the Dream Giver.

Biblically based, with an emphasis on the lives of Moses, Joshua, and David, this slender volume is extremely helpful to those of us either pursuing the Big Dream, or those who have it in their hearts, but have not taken any action to fulfill their Destiny. It will be of particular value to those who might feel that they have lost their way in the WasteLand.
The first part of this book is in the form of a parable; it is as wise as it is charming, and is an almost Tolkienesque tale of Ordinary, who lived in the Land of Familiar, and who one day leaves his Usual Job, and his Comfort Zone, to persue his Dream. There are many trials and tribulations in his path, and Giants to slay (Giants like Moneyless), but his faith gets stronger, as he learns his lessons.
In Chapter Nine, "Living Past the Edge", Mr. Wikinson describes his fear of public speaking, and the steps he took to overcome it. I recently had the good fortune to be at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, where Mr. Wilkinson spoke not only to the vast crowd in attendance, but to millions on televison, and he is a truly gifted speaker; it is hard to envision that at one time he had felt inadequate in front of an audience. With this book he will help you conquer your own fears, and get past the feeling of being Unworthy and Unable.
In Chapter Twelve, he talks about the Dream that has not been surrendered to God, and the pitfalls that can bring; how "Your Dream will become your idol", and how that can "make people 'successful' but not fulfilled" (pg. 133) and further, to face the areas in our lives that need cleansing, where we may be making compromises and have "unfinished business".
In the final chapter, Mr. Wilkinson describes how his Dream has led him to South Africa, to help the millions of children who have lost their parents to AIDS, and it is an example of how once you have reached one Dream, it can lead to another, with God continually working through you. "You are meant to be a river of blessing, not a puddle drying in the sun".
The layout is lovely, with small but beautiful images by Steve Gardiner, good quality paper, and a readable font size. I found a lot in this book to inspire me and give me the tools and armor to slay another Giant, and perhaps you will too.

I am a dreamer... and I have been on the road to my dream... but as I read this book, I have also come to realize where I am stuck right now. Wilkinson brings these profound truths with simplicity (but definately not simple as we apply it to our life's situation), and the first section tells of a person by the name of Ordinary going after the Big Dream is a parable that we can relate to. Depending on where you are in your life, some part of that parable will speak to you, and further explanation would be given at the later sections. By this, I have come to realize that this book (which is very easy reading) should be read every once in a while as a guide and check on where we are in our dream and where we are stuck in (which we often do every once in a while) so that we can move further and into the next step.

Wilkinson writes this as a Dream Coach, and in coaching, he is helping us discover our dreams and to also realize that the answer to moving forward is very often within us. He uses questions that others have asked him, quotes it, and then talks about it. To write a book in a coaching manner is not easy as we have a myriad of different situations, but we have one Dream Giver. This is also another reason why we should read it every once in a while because as coaching does, it is dynamic and in constant flow and progress. Seek to please the Dream Giver and you will soon find that every situation in life can be overcome so that we might fulfill the Big Dream that the Dream Given gave us when we were created!

Like many people, I became familiar with Bruce Wilkinson after the publication of his "The Prayer of Jabez." Quite frankly, I was very unimpressed and unaffected by that little book and rather annoyed with the Jabez hysteria that ensued. Since that time, I've read some other stuff from Wilkinson, particularly related to holiness and found it to be more helpful. So, I purchased this unabridged, audiocassette version of "The Dream Giver" with hesitant optimism.

As is becoming increasingly popular (Andy Stanley, Patrick Lencioni, etc.), Wilkinson begins the book with a lengthy parable about a man named Ordinary from the land of Familiar who is given a Big Dream from the Dream Giver. He goes into great detail to describe how Ordinary has to leave Familiar, overcome his Giants, pursue his Big Dream, and so on. Quite honestly, the parable was quite engaging, and I really enjoyed that first half of the book.

For the second half, Wilkinson then takes his parable and fleshes out the principles in direct fashion. This is where the book began to drag for me. In fact, the problem with the second half is connected with the quality of the first half. I felt like I already understood the principles after hearing the parable, so the second half seemed redundant.

One surprise bonus was the great job that Wilkinson did in reading the book for the audiocassette. He was absolutely fantastic, especially during the parable when he was providing voices for characters. If his ministry completely disintegrates, Wilkinson could have a second career reading audiobooks.

Overall, I thought that the book was fine but unremarkable. It was definitely a notch or two beyond the standard "pursue your dreams, you can do anything that you put your mind to" psychobabble so prevalent in today's culture and church. There was some depth to this book. But I was left with the impression that the book wasn't nearly so significant as Wilkinson thought that it was. I can't say that I heard anything new, just some old ideas freshly reformatted. I was also wondering if Wilkinson would write this same book in 2007, now that his dream for Africa has largely deteriorated.

In any case, I think that this book is worth something and would be happy to recommend it to folks who want a jolt of energy and passion to pursue big dreams that God has laid on their hearts.

Stuck? Confused? Lost your purpose or never found it to begin with? This book is alive with counsel, flashing lights, red flags, warm hugs, piercing truth and excellent advice to get you Unstuck, Clear and Purpose Driven! This book sorta haunted me around the bookstore, library and then house after I finally both checked it out AND bought it, gave it to an associate on a whim and re-checked it out (after re-locating) and bought it for the 2nd time. Get ready to rediscover yourself and re-realize how much God the Father loves you p e r s o n a l l y and has a purpose, plan and plot for your life, your world and the world you inhabit in your day to day living. I was reminded of books like The Little Prince and The Giving Tree that get inside of you and W O R K you through them. You come out enlightened, inspired, motivated and above all T R A N S F O R M E D. If you stay stagnant, unchanged or depressed after reading this book, I'm praying for people like you: you really just might BE hopeless. But that couldn't be the case, because the Dream Giver is real and if you have the nerve to meet Him and learn about Him, then you have been infused with power to succeed in the pursuit and realization of your dreams and purpose. Superb!

This parable is about a person, 'Ordinary' who decides to leave his hometown of 'Familiar' to follow his dream. He is presented with many obstacles, which anybody pursuing their dream will encounter, and the book is written in an easy-to-follow and quick-to-read style.

Though the author writes from a Christian perspective, the only time this is apparent is for a little while mid-way through the book. Generally speaking, you can replace 'God' with any other universal energy that resonates with you and the words will still feel right... because having dreams is universal to all people.

A friend recommended this book to me at a pivotal time in my life... a time when I am pursuing my dream to help people grow spiritually. I am grateful to have found it when I did, and I am sure that one of you reading this right now will also find it to be the right book at the right time in your life.

DO NOT pick up this book if you don't want to follow your dreams! After you read The Dream Giver, by Bruce Wilkinson, you'll find yourself struggling to sit still, and will more than likely find a strength you never knew you had for pursuing the God-sized dreams in your heart.

Written in 2 parts, this book will grab you and keep your attention until the last page. In Part 1, you'll find Ordinary, a person living in the Land of Familiar, and you'll follow his journey in pursuit of his Big Dream. Written in the style of other allegorical books like Pilgrim's Progress, you'll find yourself cheering for ordinary, and before you know it, Wilkinson turns the tables in Part 2 and shows you that what you've been reading is actually the journey God wants you to take in pursuit of your Big Dream.

Full of great practical advice ranging from how to break the tug of your comfort zone all the way to how to fight the negative forces that try and stop your pursuit, you'll want to keep this book in the luggage you take with you on your journey. You'll find yourself reading it over and over again, and being inspired every time.

Wilkinson believes each one of us has a dream that is as unique to our identity as our fingerprints or personality. Furthermore, he believes God planted that dream inside us and if we don't fulfill our mission, something significantly consequential will not happen in the lives of people who need to be touched by our God-given dream. The logical is sound if you read this book grounded in principles from the Bible.
Like other dreamers, Wilkinson says the process never ends. As soon as one major dream is accomplished, it serves as the launching pad for a bigger dream. Vitally important though is the relationship between the dreamer and the Dream Giver. There are some eternally significant issues addressed in that area, but in order not to spoil the plot, I'll just advise you to read this book. You'll thank me for recommending you do so. Your life IS meant for eternally positive consequences. Trials are part of the process.

I have been working HARD for my dream for the last 10 months and it has been quite a journey. I happened to see this book, buy it, read it, and was ASTOUNDED to hear my journey decribed PERFECTLY - each step I have taken was outlined, in exactly the same order. WOW. It was truly a blessing to know that the same steps were taken by some great men and women of God and they made it! It encouraged me and has given me strength to press forward. I am now ready to "battle the Giants" and I'm ready because I know what's in front of me. For those that don't understand this book, they can't be on the same path - they aren't going for THE DREAM. So, dear reader, if you have something precious tucked away in your heart that you want more than anything, read this book and GO FOR IT! God Bless you.

This book changed my life, and helped me leave a miserable job and abusive boss.. and a miserable life in general.. and helped me move dramatically forward into a new life of self discovery and self actualization. Although it is written by a well known Christian author and speaker, you don't have to be Christian or even religious to get the full benefit. It leads the reader step by step from a mundane life of following the rules prescribed by others.. one's family, community, culture.. to an authentic life of self actualization and personal fulfillment. Easy to follow and read, this book is like a personal adventure..and each chapter drives home a vital lesson which leads to the next. I will be forever grateful to Bruce Wilkinson for the enormously positive effect he's had on my life and well being. A true classic !!!

We're often doing what we can do and it isn't difficult to do what we have to do but there's something inside that calls us to do what we were made to do. The easy to read text is also easy to apply. I found myself identifying with Ordinary as he represents all of us with a fire pent up inside and held deep within our fears.

Simply put, The Dream Giver is easily applied to one's life and useful for determining direction in the pursuit of "what you should do". The answer isn't here alone but this is definitely a useful tool for those wanting to fulfill their God breathed design.

I was recently given this book as a gift by a friend. I have now read the book and been greatly blessed. The critics of this book seem to be making issues where there are none. I felt as if this book were written for me and found new focus in remembering that God was and is my Dream Giver - as for the critics view of the border bullies, well I honor my parents but when I started out on this path to a Big Dream guess who was there to tell me it could never work, I should keep doing what I was doing and to discourage me from the Dream God had given me? You are right my parents. Now after the sucess is beginning to be seen they are there encouraging and cheering us on but.. I had to overcome them to suceed. I encourage anyone who is trying to go forward either with a new dream or an old one to read this book and be blessed.

The critical reviews for this book express that simplicity is a bad thing. The truth is that anyone can take a complex issue and make it sound complex. In The Dream Giver, the authors have taken a very complex, yet motivating aspect of life and they have made it very simple.
The story of Ordinary leaving Familiar is very simple. And it is true that you can see many of the illustrations before they are fully developed, but that is not a bad thing. I have been going through the process of reevaluating my dreams, goals, etc. and I had begun to think that the emotions I was experiencing were unique to me. However, this presentation reveals to me that the experience of spiritually chasing your dream is universal.
Specifically, I have been dealing with God's asking me to give Him my dreams and then receiving them back after He becomes more important to me than they are. Having read Ordinary's tale, I now understand so much more about the process of developing a Big Dream, inspired by the Dream Giver.
I recommend this book for mature Christians, new Christians, and even the discouraged unchurched. I think this book could be a great tool for evangelizing the unchurched because the descriptions of Ordinary's experiences will speak to them and confirm the reality of God's hand upon their lives.

Most of the other reviews perfectly describe this book, so I won't go into too many details.
This book has made me reevaluate my own Dreams and to see how it would end up serving God. It doesn't paint a rosy picture of how you will go about acquiring your Dream. There will be Bullies and Giants but with God's help we will overcome them.
This is such a wonderful book that will help any Dreamer on their journey, even those who have yet to realize their Dreams.
I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

From the time I was in Junior High I have wondered what God has wanted me to do with my life. If only I had this book during those years. Maybe then I wouldn't have sought the answer in high-sounding Theology but by looking deep into my own dreams and desires.

Starting with a strong metaphorical narrative, this book brings the reader face-to-face with their deepest dreams and allows them to know that is where God has given them their direction for their lives. How many times have we heard that God directs us where we want to go the least? With this book Bruce Wilkinson gives us permission to do what we always knew was right; to follow our dreams because that is where God is leading us.

One warning thought. Do not mistake your dream as something that will only serve your own ends for as Bruce Wilkinson points out all too clearly, the dream that God gives us is one that serves God and others above ourselves. As the children's song so wisely teaches:

Jesus and others and you

What a wonder way

To spell JOY

Dream on!

The Dream Giver

By

Bruce Wilkinson

"It's time to begin the journey of your life. May your heart sing as you embrace everything God has lovingly planted there." Wilkinson's book, The Dream Giver, is deserving of a 5 star rating, because he reaches in and identifies the fears of people who are in their "comfort zone". Everyone in search of a dream will find comfort and guidance in this book, which holds the key to discovering all that reader is meant to do and be, with their God given dreams and talents. The reader is being challenged to search out his dream and to soul search some of life's difficult questions. In reacting with such enthusiasm and thirst with the book, I soon became confused as to Wilkinson's parables. I also became angry at the end of the book when he shared his personal story. Although his strengths did emerge, as well as his insights in achieving one's dream. I soon realized that the journey itself is what prepares one to succeed not to be afraid but embrace it!

The Dream Giver seems to be a perfect fit for anyone searching for their dream; having unanswered questions or wondering about life itself. It is inspirational, uplifting and helpful, he gives the reader common misconceptions in what keeps people from not pursuing their God-given dreams. "It's so easy to get caught up in the demands of life. And we all take refuge at times in routines and recliners and usual anything!" The purpose of reading The Dream Giver would be to help the reader obtain direction in finding his dream and recognizing his God given talents, then applying them.

The Dream Giver brought me to tears at the end with Wilkinson's own personal story. Not liking his ploy to pull me in emotionally I begun to get angry. My hope was to learn techniques from the book and move on. Instead my feelings were awakened and I became personally involved. In the end my interest was alive and well, yearning for more.

The Dream Giver denotes some very powerful insights in tackling tough obstacles, for example, the five common but deadly misconceptions that keep people from embracing and pursuing their God - given dreams. Another example, stories about Border Bullies and how they are trying to block the way of ones dream, then Wilkinson replies, "when Bullies try to block your way, what matters most is who you choose to please." The book talks about Ordinary reaching the Valley of Giants and many other stories that will peak ones interest.

A huge part of his tool that he refers to in reaching the dream is through God. Wilkinson asks tough questions such as; "Who must you break free from in order to move forward with your Dream? Therefore, once you choose to please God more than others...you can move on to the next stage."

The reader will sit up and take notice to many of the personal stories, the scriptures and goals to overcome conflict. It is a book that one will carry with them for a lifetime. The Dream Giver has many applicable lessons for all ages, the younger one starts the better, giving a sense of direction isn't such a bad thing. In reading The Dream Giver my hope was restored as well as my faith in God. Wilkinson is a man of great faith and it was a pleasure reading this book. I encourage anyone to not be afraid, to begin this unforgettable journey, to follow their dream and go for it!

Though at times formulaic, this little book does a good job of encouraging everyone to go for their dreams. Wilkinson honestly faces questions about apparent failures while chasing our dreams, even when we feel God has led us to these dreams. There is also an interesting, passing reference to the idea that "life isn't meant to be impossible to understand." Overall a very uplifting book that I would recommend to anyone that wants to see God's plan fulfilled in their life.

The Dream Giver came into my life at exactly the right time. This is true in any case, if you believe that everything happens in God's time. Every encounter is divinely inspired. Bruce Wilkinson's divinely inspired parable about an Ordinary person who mustered up the courage (faith) to leave his comfort zone to pursue his Big Dream is extremely powerful. The lessons learned in this parable can help anyone in any situation. Ordinary discovers his Big Dream through the discovery of Faith, his ability to overcome the negativity of Border Bullies, and his ability to conquer Fear, Greed, and others in the Valley of Giants.

The book is incredibly inspirataional for anyone lacking purpose in life. I found my purpose through this parable and my life has been fulfilled since then. It's not easy to pursue one's dreams, but with Faith and God...anything is possible.

Gratefully,

As I read the account of Ordinary I was amazed to see my life unfolding before me. Bruce Wilkinson really hit home on so many points. I can look back on my life and see the "border bullies" who stopped me from persuing my dream.

This was a wonderfully motivating work that has inspired me to reach out for new and bigger dreams, and to help others to achieve theirs.

This is probably one of the most motivating books I have read to date, and I read ALOT of books. This book will really make you think, and then move into action.

I first read this book in Jan 2004 and from that day on I have always rated it as the one book I would recommend for anyone to read - because it will change their life. Last year -Dec 2006 I walked into a bookshop and bought all the copies they had and gave them away to my friends as a Christmas gift. I also told them that this is the best gift I could ever give them and I know that as soon as they begin reading this book they will start listing down the names of all their friends and relatives who they will want to recommend this book too. And sure enough this is exactly what happened. I retained an extra copy for myself which I proceeded to share with people and the same thing happened. As a Toastmaster I was required to do a persuasive speech, and I chose to persuade people to read "The Dream Giver", at the end of the speech people were curiouis as to whether I was getting paid royalties for recommending it, and I told them no - this book so impacted my life that I would wish anyone I know to read this book so that they too can rekindle their dream and pursue it! Again several of those listening to me purchased the book and they agreed entirely with what I had said. I recommend this book to people of all ages - it is never too late to realize & pursue your dream! If I had the means to do it I would ensure that every family in the world had a copy of this book - it's truly an inspirational book to read!

Many of us have a library of books on the pursuit of identity, design, and purpose, but I would not ask this beautiful little book to take on those more weighty and sometimes clinical tasks (even if it would add "balance"). To ask that is to miss the point. I think we should see this gift to us for what it is, a door into your own heart or someone you would like to give permission to dream. For the very few reviews which did raise minor issues, I found most to fall in this category--asking it to do more than it was intended. If it took on those tasks, then it would cease to be the wonderful, concise parable it is, a open door to our hearts, and the great emerging movement toward simply becoming the people we were created to be.

But better than most books on the subject is it's uncanny way shedding light on the most common obstacles. The clarity and simplicity in which the author illuminates this make the life principles resonate deep and effectively memorable.

The Dream Giver offers unending gifts, and this book that introduces us to Him, should become a classic.

Within the first couple of pages, Wilkinson captures my heart with the Nobody called Ordinary from the Land of Familiar. Ordinary has only wanted one thing in his life... a dream. With determination and a huge heart, you can journey along with Ordinary as he finds his place in life.

If you are a person who has ever doubted your dreams and would like to have any sense of motivation towards your goals, then the Dream Giver is right for you. When I read this book I started to look at my goals, dreams, thoughts, etc. more clearly than I used to. As a believer in God, I found this book helping in a spiritual way. Throughout the book, Ordinary asks for signs of help and even asks for someone to reveal his dream. I've always counted on God to provide a dream for me and bless me with it when the time comes. After reading this book I started to deal with dreams and thoughts in a more... productive way. For me, all big plans, big dreams, big thoughts, etc. come from the Dream Giver, my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.

I absolutely recommend this book to Christians, "non" believers, and anyone else. This book is great book is great for hungry believers and those who want help in their lives. It gave so much motivation for me as a 16 year old teenager. It made me realize that dreams are important and should not be ignored. Dreams are important; don't let them go to waste.

Well, I have to start off by telling you that I was really waiting in anticipation for the release of this book. I was not a huge fan of The Prayer of Jabez, but I had heard Bruce Wilkinson speak on the subject contained in this book a year or so ago. His message was truly helpful to me. He talked about the "border bullies" and all of the other characters you'll meet in this book. When I read the book I did not sense the same passion that I felt from him in the live setting. It also seemed like he was trying to fill up some space and combine odd things. There are parts of the book that should be required reading for any leader, but much of it isn't really breaking any new ground. I won't judge his motivations, but I will say that I was somewhat let down by the book. It was not what I was expecting. However, most people will find it highly encouraging and will benefit from a careful reading of it.

I consider this short parable a masterpiece. The parable is a story about an ordinary person that wakes up one day with a big dream. Throughout the book, Wilkinson portrays the challenges, setbacks, and rewards of stepping out of our own way to pursue our big dream. If you are looking to step out of your comfort zone, then this is the book for you! A must read!

If you're at a place in your life where you're questioning whether you're on the right path..or if you should be further than you are..or if you suspect you aren't all that you should be - this is a great book for you! This little charmer fell into my life when I was at a crossroads (well, ok, a mid-life crisis). I was desperately seeking God's direction, and was listening so hard I missed all the signs. It's not about achieving the dream(s) you've been after, it's about achieving the dreams God has planned for you - which of course, are far greater than we can ever imagine for ourselves. Don't waste another day...get it!

Although this work seemed to have a great idea going for it, I was a bit disappointed in the finished result. Dreams and goals are important to all of us, but life does not allow us to reach all our goals, nor would all our goals necessarily bring us success ( e.g., winning the lottery) if we achieved them.
While I enjoyed the authors' use of characterization by way of description (can you say: Pilgrim's Progress'?), I would have enjoyed the lessons a bit more had they used actual Biblical characters, and their lives.
If you enjoy such prompts which teach goal-setting, achieving success, dealing with hardships and other 'need to know' (and nice to know) principles for life--or want to give such to a graduate just starting out--this book pales in comparison to works such as "With Joseph in the University of Adversity" (if you can find it!), or "The Purpose Driven Life".

I am always crushed to hear people talk about the dreams they USED to have. Today they just plod along living day by day doing whatever they've fallen into. Is that the existance God created any of us for? Living without a passion and/or a dream is equal to not living at all. This book will respark that dream and respark your life.
All the unique struggles we all face are addressed in this incredibly compact, easy reading book. I've even had to fight with my 11 year old daughter for time in it's pages. She wants her own copy so she can bring it to school. Now, that's a powerful thing to have your daughter ask. That's how incredibly inspiring this book is.
I can't wait for the study guides to come out. (...).com
(...) Before you're half way through it, you'll have at least one other person come to mind who just MUST read it.

This is a great book from Bruce Wilkinson. It's a fairly quick read that I find myself compelled to picking back up and reading it again on occasion.

I frequently give gift copies to those that we do mentoring for because it certainly has the potential to impact those who are ready for the questions and thoughts it will bring up in the reader.

For anyone who is considering stepping out of their "familiar zone", making postitive change and pursuing a dream, this simple book is a good investment. There are predictable patterns to the process of stepping out and achieving an objective that makes us stretch. Wilkinson addresses this masterfully, pulling the reader along in a symbolic journey that is highly relatable. Ultimately, by the end of the book, the reader is left to some well guided thinking about priorities and the source of those dreams we hold so close.

I don't believe God gives us a dream that He doesn't also provide the means to achieve it. This book affirms that in an entertaining parable.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It opened my eyes to the realness of things and people around me holding me back from moving forward. I've shared thoughts from this book with friends, and bought several to give as gifts.
The author has a wonderful talent of making a story feel so real as you are reading. I've read one other book from this author and I expected nothing but realness as did before. I would recommend this book to everyone searching for answers to life's questions.
I would really like to be able to put it on my iPad thru kindle. Please make this book available in kindle format. Thank you.

This is not a review of the book, The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson. There are many good reviews of the book here already. This is a review of the Kindle edition of this book. the store continues to add ebooks for the Kindle at an amazing rate. However, in the rush to do so, standards are dismissed to the point that people are going to be driven away from digital media. This book appears to be a conversion from scanning then an OCR with absolutely no follow up editing. Almost every page has typographical errors. The publishing industry has long established standards for trying to eliminate errors in printed books. Yes, we sometimes find one here or there, but mostly when we buy a book we can comfortably assume that it will be produced to a high standard. That same standard does not seem to apply when purchasing ebooks for the Kindle. I have also read a similar review of the Kindle versions of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I enjoy my Kindle and really like digital books, but not this shoddily produced type.

I have mixed feelings about this work (as I did with the Jabez book). First off, I don't question Wilkinsons motives at all, it's apparent he's working to make the world a better place by following the Spirit and second I do question the motives of his detractors, it's easy to go on the radio or publish a book or write a review and bad mouth someone, it's not so easy to go and actually do something positive to change the world.

And it's world changing that Wilkinson address here in this book. If we, as people created by a loving Father, follow the dreams and visions and paths that He as created for us, then we will, but virtue of His nature and His motives, make the world a better place. If we don't follow our dreams, or ?the Dream? if you will, then we don't make the changes to the world that God intended for us to accomplish. I believe the most important and poignant point that Wilkinson made in the entire book was near the end, when we was describing a horrible scene in Africa, where a young boy was found on a street corner dead: that scene was a graphic word picture of someone's failed dream.

That's a hard pill to swallow, and he makes no bones about pointing out the fact that it is indeed a bitter pill. But, unfortunately, a true one, if you subscribe to the logic he presents here (and I for one, think he's on a better solid biblical footing).

So why the three star rating, instead of a five? Well, unfortunately, while I find the ideas and ideals and enthusiasm all five stars and great, I'm not going to compare the writing here to C.S. Lewis or Yancey and I also have some problems with the general lack of overall ?balance? (hoping I'm not overusing that word here).

For those that happen to like simple allegorical stories, like Hindsfeet on High Places, well, maybe maybe the first part of this book will be enjoyable to you. I was going nuts and about to scream. It was short, so I waded through it. I simply can't stand this kind of reading, I feel like I'm being talked to like I'm a six year old. Perhaps that's the reading level we Americans have averaged out at, I don't know, but I find it incredibly annoying.

The second part of the book, were Wilkinson simply explains what he means, and gives examples from his life, I enjoyed and found helpful. I think the man has incredible insight and has done much to advance the kingdom. I also think, perhaps incorrectly, that many people won't wrap all of scripture and logic around the teachings in this book and thus will produce the kinds of abuses that the detractors of this work are prone to point out. Maybe. People can be sort of ?dumb? and there's the rub. How do you write a simple teaching, one that people will read and understand, without going into a lengthy doctrinal dissertation of all the ?ifs ands and buts??

Maybe you can't, and that's a shame.

More people in the Christian community need to read Bonhoeffer I'd wager, but lets face it, it's hard work.

I do recommend this book, it's got inspirational teaching which I believe, balanced correctly, is Biblically based and sound. I also recommend reading works like The Divine Conspiracy, which compared to this short book looks like the Bible itself and perhaps as complicated. Maybe there's a bit of insight into why some people seem bitter and jealous with the success of Wilkinson's work, it doesn't really seem like it took years of toil and hard labor to write them. They are relatively short and quick reads and not very complicated. (While I don't necessarily agree that that fact should lessen the value, I do take it into consideration in my rating of the book.)

All in all there two ways to look at this work: one is to simply call it a materialistic capitistic ploy of dubious value to rib off unsuspecting and uncritical Christians and the second is to consider it a catalyst towards joining the Holy Spirit in working out your salvation in the areas of this world that have a special draw or attraction on you. A place you've dreamt about.

I wonder what train of thought is most productive?

Part One is called 'The Parable of the Dream Giver' about Ordinary, a Nobody. Part Two is 'The Journey to Your Big Dreams,' using C. S. Lewis' THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA and John Bunyan's PILGRIM'S PROGRESS.

There was a Nobody from Albania named Agnes whose dream was to care for the dying and the poorest of the poor. "Most of us us know Agnes as Mother Teresa, Nobel Prize winner and one of the most admired people of our time. She died in Calcutta...But through her Sisters of Charity, her Dream is still touching millions of people around the world."

This author also wrote SECRETS OF THE VINE and EXPERIENCING SPIRITUAL BREAKTHROUGHS. In this paragel, he is the 'Dream Coach' to show the reader how to achieve his highest dreams.

Imagine if we had a time-machine and we traveled back to talk to the Apostle Paul, and we asked him, 'Are you living your dream'?

I can hear him saying, 'Boy, I've been in prison recently, I was ship wrecked, left for dead, stoned, beaten, thrown out of a few cities, naked, hungry.... I'm not living my dream. However, I'm living God's dream for me and it's been so rewarding and fulfilling'

Or, consider Mother Teressa. Was her dream to be surrounded by filth, death, and disease? I'd say that wasn't her dream, it was God's dream for her.

My point is this, my dream is often the thing God has to take away in order to replace it with something my natural person would never want.

The thing I wish Wilkinson had spent time on is knowing and discerning our dreams. Do they come from....

1. My own desires that are at war within me and entice me and drag me away? (see James 1:14)

2. Worldy passions and ambitions that are imposed on us from tv, advertising, movies, etc? (see Titus 2:11-13)

3. The real enemy who seeks to distract us and divert us from a real passion for God (see I Peter 5:8)

Wouldn't it be essential to know the source of my dream prior to pouring everything into it. What if a person spends their whole life climbing a ladder only to find that it was leaning against the wrong wall?

This is not a small issue. If Wilkinson had at least attempted to address this I'd give the book 4 stars. Apart from addressing a real time of soul-searching and discernment I'd suggest dreams can be dangerous to follow indiscriminately.

This is an awesome book to read for yourself and to share with others. It is so realistic, even though it is portrade as fictional. There were to many times in my own life that I experienced what the main character did in this book. There have been many times when I wanted to give up on my dreams and goals in life, because of someone or something discouraged me. I have been enlightened since reading this book and it has given me hope to go after what I truly desire in life. A friend shared this book with me in 2003, when I decided to read it while on a 5 hour flight to Arizona and I wasn't able to put it down. This book has changed everything for me. I saw some mixed reviews here and I think you truly need to understand what the author is saying to have a real opinion about it. I have the CD version and I have listened to it, wheeping, over and over in my car 15 times! I am not saying you should read it 15 times but definately more than once. I have been pursuing my big dream for over 3 years and the Dream Giver really put it in perspective. I cried like a baby hearing how Ordinary suffers in the Wasteland because it was just like it was written about me.

It's very educational to learn about the stages dreamers go through written by a very experienced dreamer. We start with a dream that's inspiring but still small and selfish compared to what it's intended to be, and it's meant to grow into a real dream fulfilling a big need for the whole world.

If you have a dream, you will fall in love with The Dream Giver.

This is a great motivational book that helps the reader believe in his goals and life purpose again. Putting myself in Ordinary's shoes, leaving his town of Familiar and starting his journey, his struggles and faith, related to my life so closely that I simply felt gratitude that I am on the right path. I loved how the author detailed the nerves and frustrations of the character in the book in addition to the blessings he received from the Dream Giver. I highly recommend it to someone who is struggling or doubting in his or her life purpose because this book can help put those thoughts at ease.

You get the meaning of the book as soon as you finish it but it isn't until about an hour later that the dawning really happens. You start asking yourself why the heck you're wasting time instead of pursuing your calling.

Fantastik book! Whether you are fulfilling a dream or desire, thinking about it, or unsure of what exactly life is "supposed" to be about for you, the story told in this book instantly pulls you in. It's a lot like Hinds Feet on High Places. The Dream Giver is a reminder that all of us are created to be someone unique, but we have to be willing to take the step into sometimes uncomfortable situations in order to find out who we were created to be.

As I read the account of Ordinary I was amazed to see my life unfolding before me. Bruce Wilkinson really hit home on so many points. I can look back on my life and see the "border bullies" who stopped me from persuing my dream. However I can also see the Dream Giver giving me others to push me along and to get my dream back on track.

This was a wonderfully motivating work that has inspired me to reach out for new and bigger dreams, and to help others to achieve theirs.

Easy read. Inspiring, encouraging, and story reminds us that QUITTING is never the answer. When things are the hardest and our confidence is shaken, that is the time to keep pushing. These are thingsI know, but forget to use sometimes.

I have bought 30 copies of this book to give to people God tell me to bless. This book has changed my life. Next to the bible, this book needs to be taught in churches especially to the young people. Our future needs the benefit of knowing the obstacles they will face but they will overcome if they faint not. Thank you Mr. Wilkinson for this great piece of work!

This book was given to me to read at a time in my life when I was struggling with making a huge decision. As I read and journaling my thoughts - God gave me the insight I needed to make the correct decision. I have since given this book to many people I know. It is an easy read - with a POWERFUL message! Would recommend for people of ALL ages!

This is an inspiring, brillant tale. For all of us stuck in mediocrity, this book is an absolute must!
It is well thought out, (Moneyless, the giant) too funny. A very enjoyable read, I couldn't recommend any higher. I am buying a copy for a friend of mine today, I won't be giving my copy away!

This will challenge each of us who dare to dream of doing something great with our lives. The author reveals the many challenges that want us to stop trying to shake up the ordinary. The greatest challenge is uncovering what is the most important part of your dream, which I will leave for you to uncover.

The Dream Giver is a great modern day parable of a man named 'ordinary' who is called to go after his dream. The book has deffinently opened my eyes more to God's calling in my life and I have grown closer to God in the process.

Deffinently a must have!!

This is an INCREDABLE book that will inspire you to think of life differently. It will encourage you to trade in mundane for purposeful, and despair for joy. Its a short one, but worth its weight in gold.

This book was recommended to me...3 times before I ordered it. Once I got it, I couldnt put it down. As I read it, I felt like it was about me, and realized why people were recommending it to me. This book is a real eye opener to those who are "stuck" in their ordinary life.

Part one of this book, a parable, is cute and would make a decent bedtime story for my elementary-aged kids -- so long as they could interpret it their own way. Part two (the designated application part) is hokum-riddled mush. Aside from its obvious lack of Biblical foundation (addressed elsewhere in these reviews), "Dream Giver" is replete with Robert Schuller-ish, trite, and incomplete answers for large, complex problems.

For example, Wilkinson's trumpeting (pp. 73-75) of how he needed just five minutes to turn his lunchtime waitress into a dreamer -- all in front of his Hollywood producer friend, no less -- so utterly fails to address all the woman's issues that, on first read, I thought perhaps the publisher had dropped some text. But, no. Later, Wilkinson urges caution when one spouse's dream conflicts with the other's ideas -- but he offers no solution, and no approach for handling that serious problem. Wilkinson also flashes an arrogance that is both unseemly and unsettling, claiming variously that EVERY person has a "big dream" that God wants fulfilled (p. 73), and that he (Wilkinson) can tell just by looking in a person's eyes whether that person is in the "Wasteland" (p. 123). Wow, Bruce, you are the MAN.

If what you want is a banal sugar rush, buy this book, and tingle all the way through. If you want meaningful, well-thought, and intelligent help in identifying or pursuing your "big dream," go look in the the store business section.

this is a book defineatly worth sharing...whether buying it for a loved one or merely sharing the thoughts within it's pages. I skimmed Part 1--the story of Ordinary--but found myself rereading Part 2. The thoughts are profound, and at times, gave me goosebumps.

Reads like a parable, an excellent book for those seeking or understanding their purpose in life. How obstacles appear and how they
can be overcome. This book has an appeal to those of all ages and stages
in life.

Everyone has a dream. God=Dreamgiver, provides us with everything we need to fulfill HIS purpose for our lives. Wilkinson is an excellent DREAM COACH. You will truly enjoy this very fasinating and quick read!

I enjoyed this book much more than I had originally expected when I bought it. I 'had' to read it as an assignment, but I have to say that it was very encouraging! Everyone has a dream to do or be something other than what they currently are/doing. This book rekindles the flame of the dream within us to actually stop making excuses and to 'go for it!'

Bruce Wilkinson, the best-selling author of The Prayer of Jabez, has managed to enlarge his territory yet again with this inspirational work. A short book, 157 pages, it consists of two parts. The first is an extended allegory about a young man named Ordinary, who pursues his Big Dream through many obstacles and struggles, at the behest of the Dream Giver (God). In doing so he must leave his home in the land of Familiar, leave his Comfort Zone and deal with the Border Bullies, who include his family and closest friends. Author Wilkinson uses a lot of capital letters to make sure we don't miss his points.
In the second half he talks to the reader, explaining his concepts in more detail, for any who might not have "gotten it" the first time round. He gives examples from his own life and ministry, exhorting, cheerleading and cajoling us onward to the fulfillment of our Big Dreams.
The book is easy to read, uplifting and entertaining. I managed to finish it in little more than one afternoon. Author Wilkinson has a gift for communication and his writing conveys the sense of personal contact. Unfortunately, he has left out some important elements that would have given the book more balance. Not all Big Dreams are to be followed relentlessly. Some dreams are misguided or even delusional. The author meant to say, I think, that certain dreams--dreams from God, dreams of service and ministry--are to be pursued. Dreams of winning the sweepstakes or becoming a world dictator--maybe not. But, he didn't say it. I think he also meant to say that one should exercise discernment in following a Big Dream. Pray about it, get advice from others, ask questions. Is it really a Big Dream or is it just restlessness, a hankering for change. Maybe your purpose in life is right where you find yourself. But author Wilkinson doesn't say that either.
The Dream Giver is an entertaining, uplifting book--but lacking in balance. Take it with a grain of salt. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

The author's approach is simple: Reduce the biblical Exodus story to the intellectual equivalent of a "Spot" cartoon; then apply the barebones of Strategic Planning at the individual level; throughout the process, repeat as many times as possible that all this comes from the God of the Bible, and that the author knows what God wants for us. The result is a recipe for completely egocentric living with a supernatural stamp of approval. The proof in the pudding, however, is how the author put all this into practice for himself: By going to Africa, with his self-assigned divine mandate, to save millions of orphans. The story is well-documented in a Wall Street Journal article: The outcome was a complete failure for the author, who left Africa in a huff; an embarrassment to the government of Swaziland; and a huge disappointment to many well-intentioned local social workers and millions of orphans. Nevertheless, I wouldn't call the author a complete charlatan, nor the book itself a waste of time. His book and experience provide important lessons. Being from the management field myself, I think that the author's fundamental mistake is not to question his underlying assumptions: That faith and his God will guide him in all he does, that failures are tests from his God etc. Once he drops these assumptions, openly and credibly, he'll find out whether they were well founded or not. That's the kind of lesson that we can all benefit from, and the main conclusion I draw from reading this book. see The Dream Giver
