Be warned: there are spoilers ahead! First of all, I would like to say that I adore the Song of the Lioness and the Immortals quartets. They are original and just...wonderful! Unfortunately, I discovered them in 1998, around the time when Realms of the Gods came into paperback. I have been waiting ever since then for more Tortall books to come out (and was VERY disappointed when I read Sandry's Book, only to discover it had nothing to do with Tortall). So when I saw First Test in a store one day, opened it to the first page, and saw the name "Alanna," I was overjoyed and bought it when it came out in paperback. I felt that there was something off about the story, though, and now that I've read Page, I know what it is.
I have always valued Ms. Pierce's books for their originality. This book is far from original. Cross Alanna with Daine and you get Kel. She's a girl training to be a knight, just like Alanna, only rather than trying to hide her feminity, she values it. She is determined to become a knight, no matter what anyone else tries to say or do to her. She also has wild magic, though nowhere near as much as Daine does. She is absolutely nothing new. Also, she's rather sterotypical, in the sense that she won't back down from anything and she sticks up for everyone, and takes the time to be nice to every living creature. I wish that Ms. Pierce had thought up something new for Tortall, such as seeing a character training to be a sorcerer in the place where Alanna's brother Thom went.
I liked to see more of the page life (though some of it is a little unprecedented, such as the constant and horrific bullying and hazing). I liked to see people like Tkaa and Numair in teaching positions (although we never get to actually *see* Numair teach). I also like Neal; he's cool. But I think it's clear that Kel is going to end up with him in the end, and what they're going through now is just the standard angst and not really fun to read. I had thought that I liked First Test; later I realized that I liked the parts with Numair, Daine, and Alanna the best. With these characters scarcely showing up at all in Page, I thought very little of the book. And her situation at the end was unrealistic. I kept thinking, "why doesn't she get the birds to go get Daine for help?" That would have been the logical thing to do.
However, I will continue to read this series, if only because I love Tortall, and I'm hoping that it will pick up a little. And I'm also waiting to see the reaction of Kel when she meets Alanna and realizes that she has been sending Kel presents all of these years. Though I'm afraid that Kel's reaction is either going to be stunned/gushy or indifferent ("Hey, it's Alanna, I thought I'd meet you someday"), I'm still looking forward to reading it.
All in all, as I have said, I found this book to be stereotypical, boring, and disappointing. I hope that in the future, Ms. Pierce chooses new topics for her new books.

After surviving her first year, Kel still has a long way to go to reach her dreams of being a knight. But she is not one to give up, despite all the obstacles a prejudiced teacher and fellow pages put in the way. Some of the descriptions are not as smooth and connected with the rest of the writing, but it's still enjoyable. I also appreciate very much the development of the main character and the very realistic challenges she faces. It's nice to have a strong heroine who feels 'real' (ie doesn't have super powers or isn't a vampire etc). I'd recommend it especially for girls, as an antidote against some of the spineless heroines in other books.

Those who have read Tamora Pierce's FIRST TEST will find that PAGE, the second book in the PROTECTOR OF THE SMALL quartet, is even more entertaining than the first. There are simply no dull pages in this book, as it will leave readers excited to begin the next book. However, this book suffers some minor flaws: Pierce is still scant on description (as compared to the first) of scenery and characters' physical traits and Kel's four-year epic adventure is somewhat crammed into a 253 page book. Time is often elapsed for a great while--or at least until action is again brought about. This makes the book even more of a page-turner, yet seems to have been written in too much of a rush. Although prepared for a general and young audience, this book is best recommended for girls 12 and over. Although Kel's strength and feats are nothing short of amazing, boys will not have the same appreciation for it, as girls most definitely will. As in Pierce's other books, PAGE shows the courage and triumph of the human spirit as well as the unbelievable qualities and capabilities women posses. She distinctively shows Kel's intimate thoughts and feelings through the use of limited omniscient, and allows the reader to therefore intimately know Kel as any friend or sister. PAGE will undoubtedly leave the reader spellbound and hungry for more; it is a must read.
Book 4 of the Protector of the Small Quartet - Lady Knight :: Wild Magic (The Immortals) :: Trickster's Choice (Trickster's Duet) :: Courtlight Series Boxed Set (Books 1, 2, 3) :: Alanna; In the Hand of the Goddess; The Woman Who Rides Like a Man; Lioness Rampant

This is a kinda good book, there really isn't as facinating a plot as in The Immortals and Song of the Lioness. It is better that Circle of Magic, which I found extremly boring (I only read the next ones because I hoped they would be better, Do NOT get those, Tortall fans.)
Training to become the second female knight in Tortall, Kelardry of Mindelean has a tough time. Instead of sticking to the trouble she gets dished out to her, she decides to go back for seconds and stick up for everyone else. In this book she rescues a dog, a maid twice, and all the pages in her year. But if you are reading this to find out more about Alanna (the FIRST woman Knight from Song of the Lioness Quartet) and Daine form the Immortals, keep browsing the store. Alanna is actually forbidden to talk to Page Kelardry, and Daine appears only once to take the stray Kel rescues. Kel has a few adventures, but they cant compare to Alanna and Daine's struggles.
I want to know who Kel's knight master will be. Maybe Alanna, if she's allowed, or Sir Raoul of Goldenlake or Gareth the Younger, or maybe she'll be King Johnathan's squire. I think Kel is silly not to have realized who her "Gift Giver" is. For all you slow people, I'm like, positive it's Alanna, but maybe it's Johnathan, or if Mrs. Pierce is nuts, Lord Whats His Face the Training Master.
You would probably be better off waiting for this to come out in paperback or get it from a friend or a library.
Enjoy (when you read it.)

I accidentally read this book before the First Test but it was ok to read this first. It was kind of complicated but really good. If you like to read books about girls that can take charge or fantasy and nights, then you will love this book. I love this book because of all of the adventures that this girl has and her trouble with fitting in with the boys. It tells of her troubles, accomplishment and a bully which she hates and has to help her friends in protecting the first year pages not get beat up by this bully. Over all you should read this book and out of my point of view you should read First Test first or else well as I said it is kind of confusing.

If you love female butt-kicking action, then this book is for you. This book had me reading about 15 pages a day, but after I got to page45, I read the whole thing in 2 hours! Don't get me wrong, the book captivates your mind throughout the whole book. Although it saddens me to think that her romance won't be with the handsome green-eyed Neal, but with someone else. I wanted Alanna to end up with Jonathan too.I love Jump, and this book neer wanders. When something is not right you'll know before they say so.This book was not as good as Alanna or Daine's books, but it is definitely one of the best I have ever read.

The second installment of the POTS series subtley delves into Keladry's character, causing the audience to relate with her problems and understand what motivates her. Kel has more on her hands in her later years as a page, including a timid, man-fearing maid called Lalasa, a dog named Jump who is determined to follow her wherever she goes and of course, her hormones.
Even after surviving probation, Kel isn't accepted by Joren and his gang, but is now armed with several good friends (a new first-year named Owen is introduced) to back her up. Wyldon (known as the Stump by Kel's friend Neal) doesn't go easy on Kel either. He is determined to fix her fear of heights, but so is Kel.
In this book we find how deep Kel's strength and courage can go. Pierce does a wonderful job of fleshing out Kel's character. As I read this book and the other books of this series, I could really see myself in Kel, despite the fact that we have different personalities entirely. Kel is a remarkable heroine who is neither too perfect or too flawed. Her mix of determination, strength, caring and calmness are just right. She is entirely different from both Alanna and Daine, but you cheer for her just as strongly.
The book overall is exciting, with a wonderfully thought out battle, and will keep you coming back for more. I've lost track of how many times I've read it. The cast of characters in this book, I think are more interesting than in the other two Tortall series, though some of the more interesting characters from them appear in this book and later in the series, Squire especially. This is a good buy and is written by one of the best authors in the fantasy genre.

Tamora Pierce gets us to care deeply about the characters she introduces us to, including the animals. In a series of 4 books we get to watch as a great heroine grows into who she will become while demonstrating the core values of who she is in every book.--Read this time as a library book.

Ok so I am only on page 86, but man it's really good so far. I am not such a big fan of the dog Jump right now, but things are definitley getting good. Ever since the first book I was hoping that Kel would like Neal, as more than just a friend, I am a sucker for the whole romance thing, because Neal is my favorite character in the book :). But I am disappointed to say he's not in Squire, because I have read a few reviews, and they said he was hardly in those books. I am really looking forward to the rest of the book.

I love this book. This is the second book of the Protector of the Small Series. In this book, Kel hires a shy maid Lalasa, who becomes a very good friend. She trains her to defend herself against attackers. Her also meets a new animal friend, her dog Jump, who is useful in combat. She goes through severel 'firsts'like having her first period and her first crush. Lalasa helps her to deal with it all. She still has to deal with the bully Joren and his cronies being as difficult as ever. At the end of the book, the day of the test to become a squire, Lalasa is kidnapped, and it is up to Kel to rescue her before it is too late.

I think that this book is well-written, with some very good new characters i.e Lalasa and Owen. Some of the situations are great esp. the Balor's Needle scene at the end. However I think that Kel is in a way too mature for eleven and the story, although enjoyable, is never as gripping as Alanna's. I think there should be more life-threatening situations - even when Kel fights the bandits you know she's going to win. But Ms Pierce handles the Lord Wyldon situation very well and there's nothing seriously wrong with the book...

Tamora Pierce really hits the reader hard with another bang of her excellent writing. The story of Page never becomes in the least bit slow--adventure awaits the reader with ever word! The only thing that may be bothersome is that the relationship between Keladry and Neal. Tamora Pierce hints at romance in the futur books, but it was a little frustrating to read all of the paragraphs about those hints and have nothing that related to it in the actual book. Otherwise anyone will love this great story!

This is the second book in a series following the adventures of Keladry, a young girl who wants to be a knight. She overcomes all the obstacles put in her path by the conservatives in power who think women shouldn't be knights. There are wonderful relationships with the other pages, fully subplots with her coterie of animal companions, and a real understanding by the author of what it's like to be a square peg in a round hole. Good gift for any young woman struggling with identity issues.

You've meet Keladry (Kel), the protector of the small in First Test, but have you met Page Kel?
This book is about Kel, now a page, and her adventures. She is smart, funny, and you can't put Page down!
Kel fights bandits, she makes more friends, and someone keeps sending her mysterious expensive presents. And where is "Sir" Lady Allana of Trebond, Olau, Pirates Swoop, and the Bloody Hawk? (read The Song of the Lioness) Maybe she's the mysterious well-wisher?
For fun and adventure, pick up Page!

Well! Keladry is back for her next three years of being a page and up to no good. She is actually up to good, of course...but gets in plenty of trouble for it. She proves herself of being as good a page as any boy at the palace, and even SORT of impresses the Stump - KIND of. The mysterious benefactor (that remains SO OBVIOUS to the reader) continues to give her unbelievably expensive and useful gifts. Also, I am not sure if this is a disappointment or a relief: Kel has finally seen the light in Neal and fallen in love. What I like most is how REALISTIC it is; Neal does NOT like her back. At her age that is most common, I find. The book leaves me waiting impatiently for the next, in which, I'm almost certain, Kel will begin squiring. I sure hope the Lioness picks her!

Tamora Pierce has written many wonderful books, this one meets the same standard. The main protagonist is a wonderful mix of personality traits. She (Kel) doesn't fool around when it comes to becoming a knight, and she fixes her problems. Pierce also provides interesting new adventures and characters. overall making this a wonderful book~!

Tamora Pierce is one of my all time favorite authors who could only improve upon her writing skills by turning out her books a bit faster. This book like most of her books has wonderful characterization and story line. The world she creates is intriguing and everyone in it seems real and fascinating.

Like all of th eother books by Tamora Pierce this one well and truly lived up to expectations, and I had high expectations. Meant as a book for young adults, I a mid 30 year old can still become lost in a vivid world were the problems, though simpler than the ones I have to deal with, are complicated enough for the characters.
My husband on watching me read this proceeded to badger me until I went and collected the first of this series from home (at that point 400+ km round trip).
The characters are delightful, it is a joy to see Keladry grow. One of the background plots (I wont mention which one) keeps a lively discussin at home as we try to solve the puzzle.
I look forward to my own daughter getting a little older so I can read these books with her.

This is a great novel that is a GREAT READ. I just finished reading it and I jumped online to help others choose it. I love the plot. I always thought that Kel should get together with either Neal or Cleon but i'll have to wait untill the next book to find out which. I hope Lalasa gets rich with her sewing shop. Personally, I think that Joren even with his bitersweet friendship is responsible for the near disaster at the end.( i won't tell you what it is I want you to read the book.) I hope that sometime soon Kel will figure out that Alanna the Lioness is her 'mysterious benefactor'!. I hope you read one of the best books of my fave author. If you don't you'll be missing something.

In the book Page Keladry of Mindelan finishes her last three years as a page. Even thow many very big obsticles blocked her path to being a squire , she defeated them all and showed lord Wyldon who knows best. In this book she is just as couragious and strong as she was in First Test. I hope you will read this book for the sake of yourself. And all the people who said First Test wasn't as good as The Alanna and Daine series .Hello, Kel is not Daine or Alanna and if you don't like First Test then your really not a therough Tamora Peirce fan. And if you can't handle GOOD LITERATURE. Go read some immature series!!! See Ya!!

I love this book. It's is just as good as the first book. It is kind of sad that the next book won't be coming out in a long time. Once you start reading this book you can't put it down. Of course to read this book you have to like the Alanna series and the Wild Magic series. Which I high recommand that you read. Any of the stories that Tamora Pierce writes I have to have. She is truly an inspiring writer. I envy her everyway. The way she writes with such skill makes me so jealous. Well, I hope you read this book and all the other books that Tamora Pierce reads because they are all truly awesome.

i've been reading the reviews and i agree with alot of it. there's just one thing. the secret gift giver... i'm gonna laugh really hard if it isn't alanna. everyone is saying 'oh, you have to be so retarded to not realize that it's alanna'. i kind of hope it isn't just for the opportunity to make you all realize that tamora pierce isn't quite as predictable as that. of course on the other hand if isn't alanna, oh well i guess i'll just deal. anyway, this book was REALLY good, although not as good as the immortals series. i bought first test a couple of days ago and as soon as i could i ran out to get page. i just couldn't wait. GO READ THIS BOOK!

This book is fantastic! This book has new friends, Kel's flock of sparrows, Lalasa Kels maid, and of course Jump her loyal dog. In this book Keladry has to face her fear of heights... in the Balors needle! She has to face big changes. Great read. This was the first Protector of the Small book I read.

Ms. Pierce has managed to write yet another absolutly fantastic book. I have read all of the Alanna books; the Immortals quartet; and the circle of magic quartet. I am falling in love with this series, I bought The first test yesterday afternoon and begged my mother to go buy the sequel that night. Today I have read THE PAGE twice and THE FIRST TEST once more. I have fallen for both Neal and Cleon and am looking forward to hopefully something more between one of them and Kel in the next novel. Joren continues to puzzle me and I am dying to see who picks Kel for a squire in the next book. Owen is such a sweet heart, u cant help likeing him! Kel possess's the charm of all Ms. Pirce's other characters plus an sweet personality that makes me want her as my best friend. The only slight complaint I have is that Kel has not yet discovered who her sedret gift giver is...its SO obvious! Anyway it was a wonderful book and I cant wait for the next one!

WOW! I am a REALLY big Tamora Pierce fan! I read First Test and I couldn't wait until I had enough time to start Page. I read it in bed, and I couldn't stop reading it! I kept thinking, "oh, I'll finish this chapter, and finish the book tomorrow. I did end up finishing it the next day... at 2:00 AM. I couldn't stop reading it! I loved to see old characters from Tortall, and I wondered again how on EARTH Tamora Pierce can characterize the characters of her book so well. I am scared of heights, not as much as Kel, and I was terified when she climbed... well, I won't ruin it for people who haven't read it yet. I cannot believe that Neal managed to love three people in three years! That must be some sort of record. Cleon and, (I think) Joren like Kel. Anyway... I write books for fun, and even though I am NOT a very good writer, it's taken me a half of a year to finish a less than half of a book, (only 56 pg. on my comp in size 18) and I know that it'll take a long time for the next book in the Protecter of the Small Quartet is finished... sigh. I guess I'll just have to wait, and wait, and anxiously wait.

I've been reading TP's books for 10 years now, and I've been really disappointed by the latest series.
Tortall has changed dramatically since the days of Alanna and Daine, and I don't think there's enough explanation. For instance, how come we've never heard of Balfour's Needle before? Why has the attitude of the pages changed so dramatically in ten years (eg, the hazing and bullying)? Why isn't Keladry a page, when she talked about it in "Wild magic"? (I know Tamora has an explanation on her website, but I don't think that adequately explains it).
I feel like Tamora has changed the rules of social interaction. Characters no longer feel like Tortallans, but instead act and speak like 20th century Americans. Owen reminds me of a character from a Harry Potter book, and the scene where Kel and Lalasa discuss food cravings and female hormones is completely out of sync with the attitude taken by Alanna and Eleni Cooper in Alanna: The First Adventure.
Sorry, but this series is disappointing me...

This book was the second in the protecter of the small quartet. I think the best part of the series is how Alanna (I think) keeps sending Kel anonymaous pacages that have really expencive things in them. Also the ending and the battle scene with the raiders were great, but not at all that graphic. Kel is very spunky and I like that she has a close cirlce of friends. The only thing that I thought was just a little weird was the fact that in the beginning jonen( I think that is his name)kept on picking on the 1st years and then in the end he is just all friendly, even to Kel! This book really disevers 6 stars but that was not an option

The book Page is much better than the last. Keladry's charcter has developed and her new and old friends are still on her side against "The Stump" as Neal fondly refers to him. We see what may be the beginning of a romance between Keladry and two potential suitors as well. Kel has a maid taken into her care who is an interesting character, and Joren may have had a change of heart. Page deals with a little bit more adult issues such as sexual harrasment and rape, but is still enjoyable for most ages. If that isn't enough to get you to interested into buying the book, here's something: The Stump has a new way of looking at Kel (not romantic, don't worry)

This book follows First Test seamlessly. Tamora Pierce has amazing skill at creating real life characters, and has a great eye for detail. Her characters are vibrant and full of life, and the reader laughs and cries along with the characters, as if they too were a part of the story. Page tells of Keladry remaining years as a Page. Faced with growing up, new responsibilities and strange, new emotions, Page Keladry shows the world that girls can fight - and sometimes better than the boys. This is a must read book for anyone out there who wants to see a girl as the hero of the novel.

This was a whirlwind of a book - in many cases, I thought that it just rushed too fast. Fitting three years of a page's training in one book must have been difficult, but I wish some parts had been given more time to develop. Even so, it's still a very enjoyable book.

i totally LOVED Pierce's Song of the Lioness, circle of magic, Immortals, and circle opens quartets, but I have to say that this one left me sorely disappointed. Though the style of writing remained the same, the plot and the characters were lacking. The brilliance of the plots of the first couple quartets seem to be wearing off. I dont like the character of Kel at all. It really bothers me that shes just soo lovesick all the time. Shes supposed to be a strong female character, yet all she does is throw herself at different male characters. She is only 12 years old for heaven's sake. After reading this book, ive stopped reading any more of Ms. Pierce's books, yet mayb ill start the next quartet in hopes that Ms. Pierce's writing has improved.

Tamora Pierce has been my favorite author since I picked up Wild Magic a few years back and went back to read every other book she has written. Every book I've read by her (with the exception of the cicle of magic books- not quite my taste) have been outsanding and these books are no different. Kel, though not Gifted, is equally intruiging as any other character and has an interesting personality. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

I totally love this book! Although nothing really big happened I know that she had to climb baron neddle to save her maid and when the raiders atacked the other pages, but Alanna had the tusine war and Daine had to deal with Dulthal's problem.I wonder why Joren is all of the sudden all to nice to her?You just know Cleon likes Kel.I think that if the maids weren't there he might of kissed her.Thats only my opinon. All an all, this was a very good book well thought out and everything. You should read it.

This is a fabulous book that is an excellent sequal to First Test! The characters are vivid and exciting, growing and changing just enough as the book continues. The plot, as always, is a perfect mixture of excitement and less exciting events, which make this book a real page turner! As with her other books, it has just enough forshadowing to make to long to read the following book in the series. This is book is wonderful and is a must read for all Tamora Pierce and fantasy fans!

Tamora Pierce has once again captivated and enthralled young readers everywhere with her new series Protector of the small. Her strong female characters are loveable and most of all believable. I thought the first book in the series was interesting, but I kept myself up all night trying to finish the second book in this amazing series. Never have I been so engrossed in a story that is supposedly for young adults. There is so much deep meaning in the book that you won't feel empty when you finish reading it. The characters are lovable and enchanting. Kel is a girl that anyone can admire. I just hope that the third book is even better than the second.

This whole series is a worthy follow up to the Immortals Quartet and the Song of the Lioness Quartet. Kel is a sarcastic yet quiet heroine we can all relate to. She has the annoying older brother, the sisters obbesesded with boys, and of course the sheer determination for beating boys. Sir Alanna, Duke Gareth, Sir Raoul, Daine, Numiar, and of course the handsome King Jon are back, and ready for more action! It's a great read and I would be very suprised you were able to put it down. I cant wait till Squire comes out!!!!!

This is the coolest book in the world. Kel persues her goal of becoming a knight. She also proves her skill as a leader in this book during a fight against bandits with some other pages. This is a great book because it teaches us to persue are goals and not to give up. Kel is the perfect character because she is, well, not perfect. Her fear of heights makes her seem human. This is a great book to read if you have ever wished you could do something but gender restrictions put you off.

"Page" was one of those books that you couldn't put down and would want to finish in one day! What drew me to this book, was knowing that, like "The First Test", this book would be filled with ways in which Kel proved that she could be as good or even better in some cases then the boy pages. Also, knowing that Kel would never give up her journey made me want to know how her journey to knighthood progressed and how her journey ended when she finally gets there.

If you are the type of reader who reads only excellently written well thought out and truly great books, turn away. This was great for what it was. An incipid plot heavy and etertaining bit of fluff. If you're looking for a bit highly enjoyable light reading I strongly suggest this. It is probally best for young girls, since it is heavy on equality, and strength for women in a medieval-esc setting.

I've been a loyal Tamora Pierce for many years now and was dissapointed by what I thought was a major decline in her writing abilities in the Circle of Magic series. This new series, however, is quite good. This book was even better than the first, and while it doesn't have quite the same amazing descriptive language and phenominal character develpment that charactarized the Song of the Lioness quartet, it is a very enjoyable read!

This is the first book in a set of four that is the third set of four in a series. The series starts with Alanna the First Adventure. In each set of four we meet a strong young girl fighting to discover how to be a woman on her own terms. In this set we meet Kel. With the support of her family and friends she works to balance her wish to be a knight (1 of only 2 girls ever) and her desire to still be a girl who wears dresses and enjoys being a girl.

I LOVED this book. I have enjoyed all of Tamora Pierce's books, and I am pleased to say that this one really lives up to her standards. If I could, I'd give it 6 stars.
Kel is a terrific heroine. She earns her way through hard work, makes true friends, and the reader can't help but cheer for her. I can't wait to go pick up the third book.

Page is an enchanting story of a young girl desperate to
become a knight and be treated as everyone else.
Tamora Pierce's masterpiece will be enjoyed by 10-14 year
olds, and they will love the excitement put into it
throughout the whole book. A touch of fantasy has been
added with expertise, and makes this story even better! I
truly loved this book.

The book was exciting but the character wasn't as pronounced as Alanna was,(Lady Knight). My teen like the fact that she made friends with animals but wanted her to have more humans as friends. Because she likes the series so much she wants to read all of the books in it. Good book for any age, she says.

My understanding of ebooks was that they would cost less because they saved paper and ink and such. I believe this ebook is at least a dollar more expensive than a paper copy. Otherwise, great book, wonderful story.

I love this book. One part I don't like is linked to the Immortals series. It said that Daine and Numair don't get married. Me and my friend changed it so that they get married. If you say that they get married you can believe it. good Hunting.

Page was better than the first book in the series! The plot was a lot faster, and all you have to do to make me like a book is throw in some romance. I read this in an afternoon; I couldn't put it down! If you liked all the other Tortall books, you will LOVE Page!
